The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: December 8 | Eater LA

"Ray Garcia’s return to the Los Angeles dining scene with his landmark modern Mexican restaurant Broken Spanish felt like the ideal kind of revival at a time when the dining scene has dealt with one of its most difficult years in recent memory. Yes, the iconic chicharron is back but the casual menu has plenty of other stars, like a dreamy plate of chicken enchiladas dressed with pale green tomatillo salsa, homemade crema, and salty crumbled feta. This is an extremely well-balanced preparation: nothing too heavy or cheesy, with the aromatics of soften leeks and gentle chicken adding to the levity of the tomatillo salsa. Inspired by Garcia’s mom’s preparation, it lands on the table like a warm hug. Other dishes at Broken Spanish, such as the roasted mushroom tamal and incredible Caesar salad, also warrant return visits. Culver City is truly blessed to have this newest installment of Garcia’s beloved restaurant." - Eater Staff

The Biggest Los Angeles Restaurant Openings in October 2025 | Eater LA

"Chef Ray Garcia revives his acclaimed Alta California restaurant as a perma-residency in the former Culver City Best Bet space, bringing back favorites like refried lentils and chicharrón. The menu ranges from a smoky Caesar and a tostada with julienned heart of palm and carrots, fennel, and salmon roe to albondigas, chilpachole de camaron in a spiced tomato sauce, and enchiladas verdes tucked into tomatillo salsa, with Margaritas, Palomas, wine, and beer to pair." - Rebecca Roland

Broken Spanish Comes Back to Life as a Colorful Comedor in Culver City | Eater LA

"Back as a colorful, intimate comedor in Culver City, chef Ray Garcia’s modern Mexican-American restaurant resurrects the spirit of Broken Spanish (which closed in 2020) with menu allusions to B.S. Taqueria and a warm, plant-filled room. Inside the sharply angled A-frame, the iconic serape American flag, macrame, and hanging ferns meet warm neutral interiors by Candace Shure and lush greenery from Plantitas Verdes; polished chestnut tables, textured ochre walls, and hazy pendant lights evoke convivial, home-style comedors of Mexico. Hospitality starts with botanas: pea guacamole on a low-profile tostada topped with julienned heart of palm and carrots, fennel, and salmon roe; spicy duck meatballs in salsa chipotle that beg for extra tortillas de nixtamal and pair best with refried lentils from the original Broken Spanish. Entradas include a smoky Caesar in umami-rich black garlic dressing and fideos verdes, a dry, green pasta layered with anise, tarragon, hoja santa, and fennel. The cooking leans into complex salsas and Indigenous Mexican ingredients, from pollo rostizado over an almond salsa reminiscent of mole almendrado with hazelnut salsa seca, to chilpachole de camarón inspired by Veracruz’s huatape, to enchiladas verdes balanced between tomatillo salsa and homemade crema; the beloved chicharrón in garlic mojo returns, and a tres leches bundt cake dotted with candied marigold closes the meal. The bar shakes a classic margarita lifted with salt foam and a Paloma made with house grapefruit soda, pours local beers from El Segundo Brewing and Skyduster, and features gems like Casa de Piedra’s Blanc de Blancs and Aborigen’s Clandestino chenin blanc. For Garcia, Broken Spanish Comedor marks a statement-making return to the Alta California movement he helped launch: “I feel like it will resonate… We’re just getting started, but I’m proud of the work we’re doing.”" - Bill Esparza

Chef Ray Garcia to Revive His Landmark Mexican Restaurant Broken Spanish in Culver City | Eater LA

"A residency inside the A-frame space that housed Best Bet Pizzeria in Culver City, this neighborhood offshoot of Broken Spanish brings approachable modern Mexican American fare with the same quality and passion but a community-centric approach to food and drinks. Beginning in October and slated through year’s end with hopes to continue, the menu revives signatures like the porchetta-like, horseshoe-shaped chicharrón torn off morsel by morsel with cónico azul corn tortillas and refried lentils seasoned with epazote and enriched with quesillo. An in-house nixtamal program uses landrace corn from Masienda, specifically cónico azul, and new plates such as carrot habanero aguachile, guisado de lengua, and fideos verdes join a full bar, aiming to be the kind of place people return to on a weeknight as readily as for special occasions." - Bill Esparza

Broken Spanish Comedor is everything you want in a restaurant. From start to finish, you can feel the passion behind it. Chef Ray has created a modern Mexican spot that absolutely delivers on every level. Even though it was only their second night open, the service was excellent. Everyone was kind, knowledgeable, and excited to share recommendations. Chef Ray personally brought several dishes to our table -- such a cool touch. ------- Drinks Spicy Margarita - The salt foam on top is unreal and perfectly balanced. Destilando Amor - Smooth and flavorful with just the right amount of mezcal. And for LA, the prices are really reasonable -- a delicious margarita for $13! ------- Food Highlights Guacamole & Chips - Thick, crisp chips that taste double-fried, with a bright, citrusy guac. Ceviche - So fresh and clean with the perfect hint of heat. Albondigas (Duck & Bacon Meatballs) - Incredible flavor and a sauce you'll wish you could take home. Gluten-free, too. Ensalada César - Black garlic dressing, shaved parmesan, and amazing house-made croutons -- the star of the meal. Chamorro (Beef Shank) - Deep, rich, melt-in-your-mouth flavor. ------- Five dishes for two was the perfect amount, though dessert would've been an easy "yes." Tip: Ask for the extra salsas -- they're delicious and spicy. If you're heat-sensitive, let your server know. Valet is $15, or try for a meter on Washington. Broken Spanish Comedor is a true gem for the Mar Vista / Culver City area. Great food, great service, and a chef who clearly loves what he's doing. Can't wait to go back.

Broken Spanish is another great experience from Chef Ray Garcia. I never had the opportunity to visit the original but did have the opportunity to try one of the pop ups a couple years ago so I was excited to see a new permanent location. Everything was excellent from atmosphere, to service to food and drinks. There are a lot of upscale Mexican inspired restaurants all over the region but Broken Spanish definitely stands out. The tostada, tamal and ceviche were definite favorites, traditional choices prepared with creative ingredients. Prices were very reasonable and portions were just right Definitely worth a visit and I know I'll be back!

Google
Amazing experience at Broken Spanish Comedor. Option for both indoor and outdoor patio seating. There is valet for the parking lot or street parking. Food was amazing. Highlights were the ceviche and chicharron. And the Caesar was also delish! The albondigas and ceviche both had a kick to them (but I’m the type that can’t handle super spicy well). The homemade tostadas that came with the ceviche were great but some were not as crispy as I usually like. Overall, excellent experience! Service was on top of it!

Chef Garcia has hit it on the head with this menu. Almost everything was stellar and the few misses were easily overshadowed by the hits. Extremely friendly wait staff from the FOH, to table and everyone in the kitchen looked happy as well. Morgan was out server age had a great sense of humor. Would have liked a more regular check in as we waited a bit when we wanted something, having to go find someone for requests is a tad annoying, which we had to do twice, but it was a busy evening. Not her fault for sure! The misses. Start with the tres leches dessert. Then order it again. Then make sure they have a few on standby for after the meal. Thank me later. Put better yet, leave one for me for a future pickup date. The albondigas was the sleeper hit at the table. Subtle flavors and really well done. The seafood soup and the barbacoa were the tied winners and they were both absolutely on point. The enchiladas were interesting as well with a very nice medley of flavors. The Cesar salad was nice but it was overly dressed. It's like they coated each leaf separately with the dressing, which was tasty! But a bit much. 😂 The refried beans were very ordinary as we're the tortillas so you can afford to pass on those. There were 5 of us and we were all very full by the end of this, more so as I had 3 of the tres leches. By my self. Whatever, judge me, I don't care! 🥰 All in all a very fun night, definitely recommend. 5 people, we spent about $125 pp with a drink and tip. I'll be back. For tres leches. If you liked my review please give me a thumbs up 👍🏾 to let me know! Follow me for more fun reviews. 🙏🏾

Just what the neighborhood needed! This place is both charming and delicious — perfect for a casual dinner or a birthday celebration. The food is comforting, beautiful, and bursting with flavor, a reflection of Chef Ray Garcia’s culinary prowess and authenticity. Can’t wait to go back!

Google
Loved the food and experience last night. The space is a nice change from the concepts that were there prior. Food and service was amazing--super family oriented place but elevated enough to be a great date night place too. We had a group of 6 including a toddler and a newborn and a puppy and they were so accommodating --it was really surprising to be honest as a lot of elevated restaurants are not like that in LA. Must haves are the duck Albondigas, camote-- a super tasty take preparation for a Japanese sweet potatoes. The chicharron is unlike any prep of pork belly I have ever had--perfectly crispy on the outside and super tender inside. A sleeper hit btw is the refried lentils. For cocktails super fun mix of tequila/mezcal options. Our group really enjoyed their tequila old fashioned riff. If you are into mezcals and tequilas don't forget to ask to see the full menu--there is easily over 100+ bottles. The only other places I've seen such a large list is Old Lightening at Scopa Italian Roots or Madre Oxacan. Looking forward to coming back again as a family or for a mezcal tasting flight soon!

Broken Spanish is back - and even better than we remembered. We came to celebrate our 20th dating anniversary after five years away, and everything was flawless. Mike’s cocktails were phenomenal (we basically tried them all), and every dish hit the mark. The refried lentils are exactly as we remembered - maybe even better. The tamal feels like Thanksgiving in a bite, and my wife’s chicken enchiladas were beautifully nostalgic and homemade. Service and hospitality were top-notch, and Chef Ray greeting us on the way out made the night. An unforgettable return to one of our all-time favorite restaurants. Can't wait to celebrate every milestone here.

I’m so happy this opened on our side of town! Great local spot for friends and family. I’m a big fan since way back and remember when the original Broken Spanish burst onto the scene and began reimagining the value in Mexican food. Chef Ray has given Angelenos delicious and worthy food that is on par with French and Japanese fine cuisine. He grew up in Los Angeles with Mexican heritage. He thinks in an elevated yet grounded manner that blends the roots of where he came from and where he wants to take his food to. I tasted the shrimp (A beautiful presentation and remember to order tortillas with it,) lentils, Chamorro, tamal, tostada, guacamole, flauta (excellent, order 2,) trout (delicious!) I recommend the patio if you crave more intimacy. I will try the seating at the bar and report back!

Yelp
So happy that the flavors and dishes from Broken Spanish are back at this wonderful little restaurant. It really is an exceptional experience with truly delicious dishes and service. Mia provided outstanding service and made it feel like a special evening. She had recommendations for appetizers, entrees, wine, and cocktails. She checked in just enough to make sure we had everting we needed. Ask for her tables for an exceptional experience. Food: refried lentils and heirloom corn tortillas = delicious; that's why we came! And not a fan of lentils. I took an order to go!!) albondigas = hubby loved them, they were made of duck, bacon, and nopales and had a smoky flavor Chicken enchiladas = yum, made of rotisserie chicken and tomatillo sauce Chicharron = where has this been all my life! Cooked to perfection with a mojo sauce and pickled cabbage. This is definitely shareable because it's so rich and decadent Margaritas: tasted like a key lime pie with a salted foam, paired well with the food Wine: blanc de blancs (sparkling wine) from Valle de Guadalupe, also paired well with enchiladas Desserts: being a chocolate fan, I preferred the tarta de chocolate over the tres leches Bundt cake. Parking: valet parking for $15 in the small lot. We found metered parking right in front! Ambiance: we sat outside with the warm heaters, comfortable high top tables with pillows. It was a chilly night and we were offered blankets but the heat lamps were sufficient. We plan to go back soon I spite of the long drive. It's wo

Yelp
Hmm I had really high expectations knowing this place to be the reincarnation of the 2020 broken Spanish, but I gotta say I find myself having to turn to hatchet hall next door for food satisfaction. Definitely loved the lively ambiance and everyone seems to be having a good time. So for this I really appreciated! Only show stopper is the Japanese sweet potato. The purple sweet potato drenched in spice sauce with crunchy tiny pork rind. That is a 9/10 without doubt. Everything else is just okay. Paid for an enchilada we never even ordered in the first place , but an open mind like us figured we might as well just try them. Bad idea! very forgetful. Lamb neck does smell really good, but the flavor is too simplistic to justify its $55 pre tax/tips price tag. Scallop tostada, honestly, fishy and mediocre flavor. Tresleches only looked good. But it does taste better than Costco value pack. We had 3 drinks in total. The bill came out to be $90 per person. people always say oh how time flies. But before you know it, money flies nowadays too

Yelp
Big fan of Chef Ray and I was excited to see this restaurant coming back from the ashes, I love the new and rejuvenated concept of BS as BSC We got almost all the menu, that says how excited we were to dine at this beautiful place, I remember this place used to be an IHOP and it's amazing see how great it turned out Food was just outstanding and definitely driving 1hr again to have another epic dinner Thank you to all the team Everything was amazing, from service to the food

Yelp
A MUST-GO! I really didn't know what to expect, pleasantly surprised. Our waitress Mia was so attentive and we loved every recommendation she made. Some of our favorite dishes included the lentils, Caesar salad and the enchiladas. And make sure to order the margarita...the salt foam is delicious!

Excellent food and great service. The waiter suggested wonderful dishes. Will definitely return

Yelp
We really enjoyed our meal at the new Broken Spanish in the old A Frame building. Some hits: Refried lentils Duck meatballs Tostada Barbacoa Some misses: Flauta Ensalada Cesar Somewhere in between: Guacamole I thought the price was quite reasonable for the food and the service was really nice. There were two things we didn't love. First, there were four of us. The duck meatballs come with three. We asked if there was any way to make it four. Had the waiter said the chef prepares a certain number each night and it's divisible by three, that would have totally made sense. Had he said the chef won't adjust the way he plates it because he focuses on presentation, we may have rolled our eyes, but we'd have been okay with it. He said they hadn't figured out how to charge for that. I told him to divide the price by three and that's what to charge. They still said no. Then soon before the barbacoa was served, the waitress stopped by our table to confirm that was all we had left. When we said yes, she asked if we wanted to order some tortillas. The barbacoa doesn't come with tortillas. We added them and, of course, the order is a weird number not divisible by any party size. Either include tortillas or tell tables when they order. Don't make it a hidden up charge to complete the dish. I imagine I'll be back and I imagine much of that is new restaurant wrinkles they're iron out.

Yelp
Chef Ray is nothing short of a culinary genius. We've been devoted fans since the original Broken Spanish days in DTLA, and this new location is a reminder of why we'll follow Chef Ray wherever he goes. We ordered the tamal, tostada, flauta, chicharrón, and chilpachole, and every single dish was outstanding. The chicharrón was perfectly crisp on the outside yet melt-in-your-mouth tender within, and the tamal was pure comfort and deeply filling. I could eat either one every day of my life. The atmosphere was ideal for a cozy date night yet welcoming enough to bring the kids. The service was warm, attentive, and knowledgeable, adding to an already stellar experience. We left full, happy, and already planning our next visit. Chef Ray continues to prove why he's the best in the game.

Yelp
Dinner Took my wife for her birthday and they sat us in the parking lot under a tarp while it monsooned rain with a heat lamp pointed at my face. Food was fine, I guess?

Yelp
My boyfriend and I are big fans of Chef Ray and absolutely loved Broken Spanish in DTLA! Years later we are still talking about how good the food was there so we were super excited to try Broken Spanish Comedor last night for dinner. I hate to say this but unfortunately the meal itself was a disappointment. We ordered the ceviche, camote, and chamorro. All of the dishes were so spicy with so much heat that we weren't able to enjoy the flavors of the dishes themselves. The heat from the dishes overpowered our palates and lingered. Sadly there wasn't a balance of heat with flavor. I was able to try a couple of pieces of the kanpachi ceviche that weren't in the carrot-habanero clamato sauce and the ceviche was fresh and flavorful. Perhaps ask for the carrot-habanero clamato sauce on the side. The tostada chips that came with the ceviche were also fresh and crispy. The camote and chamorro seem to have promise if not for the heat factor. Also, according to our server, we weren't the only ones who mentioned the dishes last night were too spicy. The gentleman at the table next to us was commenting on the heat level of the food as well. On the bright side, I did have a nice glass of chenin blanc from the Valle de Guadalupe with my meal. Our server even poured a small taste of it for me to sample before he poured the glass which was much appreciated. We also had the tres leches bundt cake for dessert which was artfully plated. The decor of the interior of the restaurant is cute and welcoming with a nod to Chef Ray's hispanic heritage. There is also an outdoor patio area with heaters where you can dine. The service was very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. There is definitely a great front-of-house team here. They were nice enough to take care of our meal last night which we really appreciated. I am hoping that last night was just an off night for them as they just opened. We are looking forward to our next meal here being a better experience.

Dan T.

Yelp
Really liked the meal here, everything kinda over-delivered. The guac and chips were strong, the Flauta and Albondigas were killer, and the Camote surprised me in the best way plus the Chicharron was insane. Vibes were good - staff was super friendly and the Paloma was an easy 5 stars. Overall just a really solid, enjoyable meal and worth the price.

Matthew W.

Yelp
Wow wow wow great date nite. We had ceviche, abondegas, Caesar, and the beef shank with tortillas. As amazing as everything was the Caesar stole the show. Best we've ever had without question. Still talking about it the next day. We will be back again soon. We won't share it next time, we'll need 2! Oh and the Amour cocktail, sweet, Smokey, and spicy. I missed Broken Spanish in DTLA, going before laker games was a tradition. I will find a new excuse to make Comedor a regular in the date nite rotation.

Cheryl C.

Yelp
Went in this past week for a celebration. Chef Ray Garcia is clearly an artist- every single dish shows care and attention to plating, with colorful finishes that get your mouth watering before you even take a bite. I was bummed from the minute I saw the menu though, as the chamorro I'd pre-chosen from the online menu was no where to be found on the in-person version. It had been replaced with a lamb dish, and I dislike lamb. There wasn't even a close second, so I chose the enchiladas. They were beautiful, but nothing special in terms of flavor. The camote (roasted Japanese sweet potato) was great- crispy and spicy- just wow! However, it looked nothing like the photo on the restaurant website- several slices instead of the whole potato pictured. Made me wonder if it was even the same dish. Food was wonderful overall- I was able to taste the trucha and pollo rostizado, and both were delicious. The abondingas (duck meatballs) were fall-apart tender and quite spicy. Downside: everything is served a-la-cart. Would have appreciated some small side dishes with complimentary flavors served with the entrees, or at least a heads up from the waiter that we might want to order something. Which brings us to service. Friendly and attentive, but for this caliber of restaurant we missed some key service points: there was no explanation of or suggestion for any menu items, no coffee or other after-dinner drinks suggested or asked about to go with dessert, no candle in the dessert even though I know my son told the waiter it was my birthday. I will say the tres leches bundt cake is gorgeous and full of outstanding flavors. Service needs to be stepped up a notch to bring it to 4-5 stars. I'm sure they will get there! I hope the ugly tenting on the outside was only due to the torrential rain we are having. From the outside it looked as if the restaurant was closed and under construction- kind of took away from the experience. We'll give it a few months and try again.
