The Best Bagels in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Since 1953, Angelenos have lined up at Brooklyn Bagel Bakery for bagels by the dozen, hot and cold sandwiches, and fresh-squeezed orange juice. There’s a bagel for nearly everyone here, including a mozzarella-topped pizza bagel, a classic egg bagel, a chocolate chip bagel, and a rye bagel. While the bagels can stand on their own, make sure to try them in a sandwich with egg and cheese, lox, or topped with cheese and pepperoni." - Mona Holmes

The 14 Best Bagels In Los Angeles

"Brooklyn Bagel Bakery first opened in West Adams in 1953, and moved to Historic Filipinotown in 1965—making it the oldest spot on this guide by several decades. They operated as a wholesale operation for most of that time, but, after some, uh, structural issues and a subsequent rebuild, this bakery reopened in 2018 with a retail shop to sell their beautiful, blistery bagels. We like them best with a heavy-handed spread of garlic cream cheese, and a few capers sprinkled on top, so that the focus is on these dense, doughy, thin-skinned beauties." - sylvio martins, arden shore, garrett snyder, cathy park

I came a few hours before they close shop. I visited their old location long ago and the bagels are still good. At the time I arrived bagels are half off. I really want to arrive when they’re recently made. I ordered two plain bagels, a jalapeño bagel and one plain bagel with cream cheese. I was not disappointed. They really give you a lot of cream cheese! All of this cost me less than $7! They are one of few places that actually prepare your cream cheese bagel. You can tell this place has a lot of tradition and they’re Doyers fans. They don’t have a place to sit and eat as far as I can tell. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Parking is an issue around here but it’s free if you get it.

Google
Delicious, Fresh Bagels! I've ordered plenty for staff breakfast and folks are always happy. I recommend you try all their bagels at least once so you can find your favorite. I definitely like their onion and cheese, they're jalapeno, and they're Pizza bagel. Their breakfast potatoes are amazing and their drip coffee is on point.

Google
I loved the style of this place when you walk in, it feels like an old school bagel shop, and the space creates the atmosphere that you’re only there to get your food and get out, which I like. The bread was a little stale, maybe I should have asked for it toasted, and the cucumber slices were a little thicc, but overall not a bad bagel. I got the lox, and the salmon and smear were fresh and tasty, only mild complaints are about the bread.

Google
I’ve come to really like these bagels. Lots of flavors to choose from. The issue for me is the inconsistent sizing. Some are 1/2 the size of others. But all the same price lol. Oh well.

Google
Absolutely delicious very satisfied. Got the breakfast bagel sandwich on everything bagel. Highly recommend but it is a small place to go is best.

Google
Amazing, freshly baked bagels! I ordered the pastrami with swiss cheese, slaw an "over easy egg" on top of a warm, toasted rye bagel that was incredible!! The type of place you want to return to & try one of everything on the menu!

We were doing our laundry next door when we decided to try this place for the first time since we had seen so many people go in and out; it seemed really popular. My order came out to $9.80. Well after I ordered I pulled out a few 20 dollar bills when they immediately said "we don't have any change for 20's" and I swear she rolled her eyes. I'm assuming they said this because they kept eyeing the EMPTY cart we had with us; the cart we were using for our laundry because we live right around the corner. And by the way we were dressed completely normal, so if anyone is assuming it was the way we looked, that wasn't it. I say this because there is a large homeless population nearby and I'm sure this place has dealt with some not-so-friendly people, it is close to MacArthur park after all. Just that morning we watched dozens of people come in and pay, we highly doubt not a single person used cash. Let alone how unprofessional it is to have a till with no change in it at a BUSINESS. I happen to have enough quarters but because of their snooty attitude I decided not to give these people any of my business.

Google
I was looking forward to trying these bagels. I ordered 2 the pizza and crab apple bagels. They were actually delicious however the lack of cream cheese they put on the bagels was disappointing. I ate the pizza first thinking it was an error then my second one was better than the first which isn’t a good thing(pictured). Hopefully next time they will spread the goodness and me experience will be better!

Yelp
Went on a Sunday at 6:30am. It's all street parking, so good luck. But the time I went it wasn't a problem :). When I went it was busy with locals and pickups! The atmosphere was quite friendly and although it was busy, people there were all nice. There is not inside or outside seating so everything is to go. I got the LOX bagel with 6 assorted bagels and a pumpkin latte with almond milk. The lox bagel was good and thick. It all tastes pretty fresh. The assortment of bagels all feels nice and soft and I equate that to fresh... (I'm not a bagel expert :p) The latte was good. I only wish that there was a larger option :), but all good! If I am in the area again and the parking is easy, I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
First time trying here :) it's a cute little bagel store with coffee options. We got the lox sandwich on jalapeño cheese bagel. The sandwich is $14.50 and I realized I should've just made this at home. I love small bagel shops and this one has a rich background in LA, but the sandwich is definitely not worth that much. I compare the price bc I'm from the Bay Area where everything is pricier and my local bagel shops over there wouldn't charge over $12 for a quality bagel sandwich.. For me, there's way too much capers and it was hard to eat without sipping my coffee each time The bagel itself was pretty good, should've just gotten that itself. Also ordered a cold brew- Service was fast despite their busy morning.

Yelp
Ordered via DoorDash @ 6:30am. Feels like I got day old cinnamon raisin bagels; they were flat and rock hard. The scrambled eggs in my breakfast bagel was grey.

Yelp
I love coming here and ordering the jalapeño with cheese bagel with cream cheese and a berry lemonade. The service is always great and they are very attentive. It is pretty small inside when you are ordering but they have two benches outside where you can enjoy your bagel and drink.
google avatar

Yelp
As a guy who grew up in Brooklyn, NY, I was really excited to try a good bagel in LA. My go-to order is always an everything bagel, but they were out, so I opted for the cheddar jalapeño bagel, which was absolutely amazing and delicious. Perfectly crispy cheese atop a soft interior. Really enjoyable bagel and not expensive at all. Quick experience and took about 5 minutes from ordering my bagel to receiving it--p.s., parking may be hard to find. 100% be back. I'll be looking to try the everything bagel next!
google avatar

Salvador D.

Yelp
Their bagels are freshly baked, delicious and worth getting up really early. Even their cream cheese tubs are great.
google avatar

Carlo G.

Yelp
Great bagels! Definitely a good competitor against other bagel chains in LA. I tried many different bagels from the everything bagel to the sesame bagel. All the bagels I've had are very flavorful and had a generous amount of toppings which stands out from other bagel chains. They're so flavorful that you can just eat them on their own. They are also nice and dense, satisfying for carb lovers. I didn't get a cream cheese, but I would love to come back and try the bagels with cream cheese from Brooklyn Bagel Bakery. The only thing I'm concerned about is the packaging since I received them in an open bag. Maybe it would be best to keep them fresh and away from harmful things like bugs by putting something on the bag to easily open and close it.
google avatar

Dana T.

Yelp
I came here on Friday around 11 AM and there was no line. I got the garlic bagel, and since my boyfriend can't have dairy, we got the vegan cream cheese. Solid bagel and the vegan cream cheese was pretty similar to regular cream cheese.
google avatar

Martha E.

Yelp
Honestly, it's always disappointing when the cashier is friendlier with the person in front of you and then less so when it's your turn. It's happened before but I understood Covid had particular short staffing challenges and with that came many other issues. But I'm not sure excuses It's not the first time either. Regardless of the situation, talking down to someone *especially if they're paying you?!* is generally frowned upon. I will say that the gentleman who handed me my bagel was quite kind and genuine. I'll come back for a bagel bc there aren't any other alternatives nearby but, believe me, I'm looking for other options and I hope others do as well.

Yelp
I stopped to purchase a bagel and coffee and walked out without buying anything due to the horrible service. The young man behind the counter has no customer service training and treats customers like he is doing you a favor. Sadly, I do not plan to return.
google avatar

Dennis I.

Yelp
I picked up a few bagels and cream cheese to go from one of my long time favorite bagel shops on Sunday. However, take a look at the Mold on the cream cheese on Tuesday. I get that a food business will generally push out the oldest products first, but this is ridiculous. I didn't notice the date on the cream cheese until today, but it shouldn't have never been sold to a customer. Never again.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place for sometime now. I ordered egg bacon avocado garlic cream cheese on an onion and cheese bagel. It was delicious, I just forgot to tell them not to have it super toasted because I prefer softer bread. Bagels were smaller in size than I expected. They ran out of the jalapeño bagel which was expected since we got there around 12:40ish and they close at 2pm. Cool thing was that they sell the left over bagels for 50% off after 1pm. It's a small bakery and I don't think there is a public restroom. Street parking available. Staff was friendly. Took a while to order since staff multitasks with packing the food and working the register. Decor was pretty cool, posters were from the past when they opened. Limited seating area outside and I see alot of Togo being made. Will definitely come back to try just a bagel with cream cheese only.
google avatar

Yelp
Home of the hearth baked water bagel in LA. One of the classic Americana establishments in the heart of Beverly Blvd. The vibe is rustic, industrial, no-frills corner cafe that simply delivers your morning cup of joe that goes well with either bagels or muffins. Done!
google avatar

Dale U.

Yelp
I love this spot. Came in around 8 on a Saturday morning and no line! I ordered the custom bagel with a bunch of stuff and it was delicious. All the ingredients were fresh no microwave. The egg was perfectly runny, bacon crispy and the herb spread was tasty the poppy seed bagel itself was really good too. Iced americano was good They also have packets of Tapatio hot sauce. I definitely will come back. Pro tip: I ate the bagel at echo park lake and it was PERFECT start to my morning. Note: street parking and no tables to eat at inside
google avatar

Tiffany A.

Yelp
Side street parking available. Only benches up front otherwise you take to go. The scallion bagel was good, I got it with a type of veggie/herb cream cheese which alright. I was looking for scallion cream cheese which is a NY staple
google avatar

Mabel C.

Yelp
Omg sooo many different bagel options. My husband and I were absolutely mind blown by how good the bacon egg and cheese bagel was with avocado! It had pickled onions (yum!) and the bacon was crispy! We split half and it left me very satisfied! We also ordered 2 Vanilla lattes with oat milk and it was delicious as well! The servers were very friendly and everything came out so fast!! Will definitely recommend and be back!
google avatar

Alisa M.

Yelp
Tasty, love the variety, I see reviews mentioning poor service but the guy who helped me before closing was really nice! Maybe because it was slower haha. No place for dining here so just grab your bagel and get out!! I like it.

Juan G.

Yelp
Great selection of bagels. Lots of options with cream cheese. Solid bagel spot and friendly staff.
google avatar

Salvatore S.

Yelp
Had the breakfast bagel on an Everything. One of the best breakfasts in town. Piled high and filling. Deliciousness is 100%. Supe clean atmosphere and the people who work there are awesome. Forgetaboutit, a must.
google avatar

Ted H.

Yelp
not the same. agitated and unfriendly staff. you're bothering them if you go there. Basically felt unwelcome and received the GTFO vibe. A dozen bagels are now $18. Not worth it. We sampled our faves: plain, cheese, cinn/raisin, jalapeño, and blueberry. Cheese was yummy, cinn raisin had no raisins but great cinn taste and texture. All the rest were dry and tossed. Goodbye, old friend.
google avatar

K F.

Yelp
Bagels are mid. Their toaster isnt great --normal toast the bagels are still soft, double toasted they become harder than my head. It's also kind of pricey. they charge you for the small cream cheeses with each bagel and its a dollar a lil container. Noahs and einsteins is complimentary so thats really off putting they charge you. My order has been messed up multiple times too, kind of frustrating. They're inconsistent as well. They will sometimes individually wrap and other times not, even when requested. Sadly its the only bagel spot near by but it's not all that. just hipster marketing.
google avatar

Carla M.

Yelp
The best sesame bagel, ever! Among other great bagels. Staff was the best. Didn't even know this place was down the street. Glad I found it! Thank you!
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
I got the bacon, egg, and avocado delivered via Uber eats and it's pretty good. My only complaint is that it is messy. My first bite into this sandwich everything started to fall apart. I had to eat it in sections. I had to eat the top part first and eat it like an open faced sandwich. I wouldn't mind the messiness but I was at work in an office job and the cream cheese spilled all over me . It's funny but I hate walking around with food stains on my clothes. Anyways I recommend this place it's pretty good. I will order again and just have more napkins handy
google avatar

Andee T.

Yelp
I can't eat wheat gluten but my kryptonite are bagels (and croissants) great bagels of perfection. I felt silly thinking the prices were what's listed on the vintage menu board on the left as you walk in.The cashier was kind snd told me I'm not the only one. Their cream cheese was pretty good and they have fresh squeezed oj too. Feel lucky to have this nearby.
google avatar

Arlene M.

Yelp
I ordered on Uber eats Jalapeño bagels. They're moist and have the kick in the end. I ate mine with nothing added with coffee. These jalapenos are in the dough unlike other places who lay a few jalapenos on top of the bagel. I also ordered whole wheat, cinnamon, and rye. I received my order warm and fresh. Yummy
google avatar

Andrea Y.

Yelp
Really disappointed in the last order I made here. I've gone a few times before and had decent bagels, but the most recent time I went, my egg bagel was hard, stale, and dry. Idk if they gave me old bagels from yesterday's batch because I have a hard time believing a bagel made fresh that morning could taste like that. Some of the other bagels I got like the pizza or jalapeño cheese were a bit better aka not as stale/dry, but not great. Unfortunately, I don't think I would return given this experience.
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
The bagels here are gas, I don't think I took a very great picture of my bagel sandwich but I promise anyone and everyone that it was so good. Service here is pretty good as well, never disappointed by this place. Thank you guys.

Sadie A.

Yelp
very yummy bagels, but their GF bagels were very sad. service is quick and kind. the decor is awesome.

Jea S.

Yelp
The service is ridiculous, who mistakes orders that are on the men TWICE. Don't come!
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
Bomb breakfast bagel sandwiches. The veggie breakfast sandwich is one of my favorites. It's a pickup / order window; no dine in. Their freshly squeezed OJ and breakfast potatoes are also tasty . Highly recommend.
google avatar

Neana H.

Yelp
I ordered through Grubhub and my order was all wrong and I couldn't get a full refund through the app . I called the store directly and the manager wasn't available and they said they couldn't do anything about it because it's Grubhub. I was so frustrated and thought it would just be a total loss. HOWEVER, the next morning, the manager Lionell called me back and offered me a whole new order on the house. I reordered the items I didn't get from Grubhub PLUS added a sandwich and breakfast potatoes and Lionell made sure I got them with ease and completely free of charge. Furthermore, the food was delicious! The cheese onion bagel with garlic cream cheese and the breakfast potatoes were to die for! Awesome customer service and delicious food. Will be back soon!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Loved how cool this place looked. The bagel and vegan cream cheese were good. I recommend getting the jalapeño bagel. I do wish the bagels were a tad bigger because I was still hungry after eating, but it's understandable. Will come back again! The employees were really nice and fast.
google avatar

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
I only got a half dozen...shoulda gotten a dozen. Love these bagels, great variety. Great service, quick efficient...highly recommend. Happy there was parking out front and the line was short at 1130am on a Sunday.
google avatar

Naomi S.

Yelp
this is my new fav bagel spot in LA. wow this dough is out of this world. i loved this so much i literally ate 3 bagels. the onion bagels are insane. i've never had 3 bagels in one sitting lol

Dani B.

Yelp
This place just became my fav breakfast spot. I just discovered this place about two weeks ago and have already ordered about 5 times lol. Fresh baked bagels, the best cream cheeses, the best ingredients, and the coffee is legit too! Take my money!

Willa S.

Yelp
I used to come to this place when it was under previous management. Now places looks more modern from outside. They did a good job! Today I ordered my usual bagel! And a macchiato! They handed me half empty cup of coffee for $3.50?? Really? When I ask they said it's like that ‍ Hahah starbucks and dunkin offers macchiatos that are full cup
google avatar

Trung N.

Yelp
Well, twas not the best bagel sandwich I've ever had. Brooklyn Bagel Bakery is conveniently located down the street from me. I recently felt a hankering for a bagel sandwich and I tried my luck at Brooklyn Bagel Bakery. I ordered a breakfast bagel sandwich - bacon, egg, avocado and cheese ($11.50). it comes with garlic cream cheese, scrambled eggs, bacon, avocado, cheddar, and pickled onions. I didn't follow the recommendation and just ordered it on an everything bagel. It's almost indescribable what the texture of the sandwich felt like except to say that it was slimy tasting. Perhaps it was the sponge like egg that resembled Japanese tamago except in a bagel. Or perhaps the slather of cream cheese wasn't necessary a good addition because everything kept sliding out with each bite. Whatever the case, this was not it. Due the proximity of the bakery to my house, I'd give it another go but maybe just a regular ole bagel and cream cheese next time.
google avatar

Hector S.

Yelp
Has to be by far one of the worst bagels I've had in my life. To use the name Brooklyn bagel in your name is a crime to all the good bagel stores in Brooklyn. I had ordered a bacon egg and cheese with a poached egg and the egg that was used was a COLD HARD BOILED EGG.... On top of that the bagels are stale small and disgusting. I have tried giving this place chances time and time again and the bar gets lower each time and somehow they manage to disappoint.
google avatar

Luke R.

Yelp
Best bagels in LA. My daughter and I go there every Friday morning. Friendly staff who remember our usual orders is such a nice touch!

Maxine C.

Yelp
Pretty mid bagel I got everything with herb cream cheese would have been nice if they put more than a quarter size amount of cream cheese on it so I could actually taste it. Only ordered from them bc Maury's is closed.
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Being it was my first time wasn't sure what to expect. But the double espresso with the egg, avocado and bacon on everything bagel was a must. lol forward to going back.
google avatar

Patrick P.

Yelp
Never had a place forget to send half my order and tell me that if I wanted it that I needed to come pick it up. Wow.

Halie A.

Yelp
TWICE they haven't given me cream cheese, just a dry bagel thrown loose on top of the rest of our order. If I'm paying extra for cream cheese, it better be provided. This place has let me down too many times, and the bagels were mid to begin with. Also, the lox is watery and low quality.
google avatar

Eric K.

Yelp
Order your cream cheese in separate containers... this is what they give you for adding it onto the Bagel
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
Sorry, the quality of the bagel has gone down. I bought 3 plain bagels this morning for $5.25 (oy!) They were not the freshest and they did not have the shiny glaze that a bagel ought to have. The crust had a matte finish. I have a feeling that these were not boiled before they were baked. Normally I eat a 'fresh from the bakery' bagel with just butter - not toasted. I had to toast these just to overcome the somewhat staleness. So, I doubt if I'll return here.
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
Had to go twice to make sure Everything with jalepeno cream cheese. Small bagel, came out coldish. Cream cheese has the jalepenos blended in vs in chunks. Honestly it's too spicy that way and not as enjoyable. Also not enough cream cheese. Onion jalapeño with regular cream cheese. Bagel was a little warm, good amount of cream cheese. Tasted good. Not a huge bagel. Drip coffee is good, just regular sugar no raw or anything else. This place seems like it could fit the bill for basic yummy bagel shop but it falls short. However, I still enjoy it and the easy location !
google avatar

Chastidy S.

Yelp
The customer service was excellent! But when we asked for certain things for our sandwiches , we DID NOT get anything we requested for. The bagels were not toasted ( I expected to be at least) I asked for pickled onions to be removed from two sandwiches since I am allergic and they put it all in there. It's like she repeated what we wanted but nobody actually did it. My aunts sandwich had a raw egg in it. It was not cooked all the way. The sandwich description says "scrambled egg" not over easy. Very disappointed... everyone was nice but they really need to work on their sandwich making and hearing ! Lol
google avatar

Ozzy R.

Yelp
I was in the area. I was craving a bagel. I pull out my yelp app and search. Found this spot really close and went for it. What I like is that it's a bagel shop. Pretty simple. They have a great variety. Prices are fair too. Cheap! As they should be. I mean, it's a bagel. Why over charge? I got two! Blueberry and rye. Sliced and toasted with cream cheese. Delicious! Thanks guys.
google avatar

Nathalie D.

Yelp
First time coming to this location for bagels, and it will not be my last. The bagels and service were so great, I'll be coming back. My sister and I ordered bagels to-go (sesame seed, plain, cheese and cinnamon raisin) and some bagel sandwiches (can't remember which ones) to eat on our way home. The bagel sandwiches were fresh and to die for! To our surprise, bagels were still soft after a week of being in the refrigerator!
