The Best Pizza Places In New Jersey

"If the upside down square pie at this Jackson pizza spot sent a slice of itself to 23andMe, we imagine it’d learn that it’s a very close relative of the Sicilian pie at L&B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn. As anyone who’s been to that Gravesend institution can tell you, that’s good company to be in. Order it by the slice at the counter up front, or sit in the large dining room, and wait for the truck tire-sized sheet of thick crust, fresh mozzarella, and tomato sauce to arrive at your table. Like at L&B, the crust isn’t as crunchy as you might expect, but it’s not at all soggy thanks to the layering, with cheese protecting the crust like an elastic poncho from the acidic tomato sauce on top." - matt tervooren

Welcome to pizza royalty — we’re talking about the legendary Brooklyn Square Pizza in Jackson, NJ, where the crust is crispy, the sauce is bold, and the toppings are piled with pride! Owner Peter Grippo has built a pizza empire with a crust so crisp, sauce so sweet, and cheese so perfectly layered that even Dave Portnoy himself had to take notice — giving Brooklyn Square an impressive 8.9 rating on Barstool’s One Bite! And if that wasn’t enough? Brooklyn Square won the title of Best Pizzeria in the USA on Good Morning America — a nationwide showdown judged by food critics and fanatics alike. This spot isn’t just a local gem — it’s a national treasure. From the caramelized crust to the reverse-layered cheese and signature red sauce — every bite is bold, balanced, and baked to perfection. This is not your average slice — it’s a full-blown flavor experience. But it’s more than just a slice — this Jackson location boasts a full menu and a cozy dining room that puts you right in the heart of the Borough itself. From the classic red-and-white Italian tablecloths to the framed photos of legends and local icons, every inch of this place oozes old-school charm and passion for Italian-American food culture. Whether you’re there for the famous Upside Down Pie, a hearty pasta dish, or just soaking in the ambiance — this place delivers every single time.

In the area for a dance competition and this was a must stop. We were here a year ago and had to return! This upside down square pie is delicious! The sauce is something really special!! It’s a good thing, for my purse, that we live two plus hours away!

Some of the best pizza we’ve had, we came in with high expectations and were not disappointed! Square pizza was light, amazing sauce and cheese, full of flavor and was true to its roots with Brooklyn in its name. Pasta and Panini were equally great and look forward to trying everything at some point. We sat in the dining room and service was wonderful. Owner was there and very welcoming and friendly, had a great talk and nice to hear his story and about his family. Wish him the best with his battle with cancer. Amazing to see so much positivity and it came through in the wonderful food! Highly recommend a visit.

Idk what happened. We used to order from here 5-6 times a month. Over the past year it’s gone completely downhill. It’s so bad. We asked for it well done because it’s been undercooked lately, and it came extra raw with the cheese melted into the box. So nasty 🤢 the owner thinks he does no wrong and has a nasty attitude. I’m confused because who likes underdone pizza? I gotta find a new place now because never again.

So- loooong before Dave Portnoy laid an 8.3 on this pizza joint, I was already screaming it from the rooftops. In fact, for ELEVEN years now, I have traveled an hour each way for the Madone Pie and that sesame seed crust…. 🤗 And I don’t regret it at all. BEST pizza in South Jersey, period! Perioddddd.

Stopped in on the way to six flags. The upside down square was fluffy and doughy with crunchy crust. Perfect mix of everything to make a great pizza. I had the vodka square slice and that was great too. Owner and staff were great and we decided to order a pie to go!!!

Me and my 10 year old son stopped in to grab a slice and some fries. I never been to Brooklyn Square but heard they had good pizza, so I take my son there for an after school snack-Whoa..! Apparently no one had ever done this at this pizzeria before because they staff had no idea how to accommodate us. Most pizzerias have a booth or two upfront by the counter to sit and have a slice this place didn’t so we kind of walked into the dining room and had a seat, an older fellow was sitting, and one of the tables I asked him is it OK if we sit here he didn’t answer me. I asked him again. Is it OK if we sit here he said oh yeah but you gotta order up front, yea no kidding. So I ordered my fries. The fries came out. They were hot crispy. A good size portion kid leaves them on the table no plates, no ketchup no napkins no silverware. There’s a big plate of french fries in the middle of the table so I asked for all that stuff apparently they had never been requested those items before. It was a big deal they had to go look for the utensils and napkins. Then they obviously forgot to put in my slices. I went to go check on them 10 minutes later and they still weren’t done. Kid brings them out a minute later the slices were good better than average. Anyway, me and my son finish up. I need to go box for the fries because it was a large portion. Apparently no one ever asked for it to go box before they had to go look for it. They came back with a container and lid that was the wrong size. I paid for it two slices order of fries one bottle of water $18 and change. Meanwhile, the old guy is ringing me up with like a Desk calculator. I don’t know how we got 18 bucks. I didn’t argue. Couldn’t wait to get out of there and never come back. Anyway, food was OK. Service was horrible and they honestly seemed annoyed that we were there. I guess they only really want to do takeout for their regulars. I’ve never heard of a pizzeria that didn’t have at least one table. .

I stopped by after attending an event at the local high school. My mom and I needed a quick bite before we drove back to NY and Brooklyn Square Pizza was recommended to us. It surely did not disappoint. Not only was the pizza delicious but the service was stellar. The waitress went above and beyond and even helped my mom walk out to the car. I made a request for a different pizza pie not on their menu and they were able to accommodate me immediately with no hesitation, attitude or questions. This pizza was for my brother who is a pizza snob and he ate pretty much half of it when I brought it home. I can’t even put in words how special we felt being there. Whenever I am back in town this is where I will be stopping by whether it’s for a slice or just say hi to my new friends!

Yelp
Best pizza I ever had. It completely changed my life. I had the upside down vodka square pie and it was out of this world. I would eat this pizza off the floor.

Yelp
Won't put the video together for a few days still probably, but finally had the opportunity to check out Brooklyn Square today in Jackson. We got a half upside down square and a half "Gravesend" which was fresh mozz, peeled tomato sauce, grana padano, and fresh basil. Both were incredible, and this is coming from someone who spent his youth eating square slices IN Brooklyn. The crust was light and airy with a unique taste, great fresh tasting sauce on both, and high quality cheese. The owner was a super friendly guy and this is priced around what I'd expect. Portnoy gave them an 8.9 and he's not even into this style of pizza (not that I always agree with him anyway haha). Brooklyn Square absolutely - Didn't Suck! If you'd like to see this video and hundreds more please check out my social media pages here - https://linktr.ee/Didnt_Suck

Yelp
We were in freehold for an event so we had to make the drive over to Brooklyn Square to checkout the hype. Food: the Cesar salad was good and the portion size was perfect for the 4 of us to share. The pizza itself (we got the thick crust) was good, but it didnt live up to all of the raving 5/5 reviews that encouraged us to come here. The pepperoni side was more favored over the chicken and vodka sauce. The pepperoni was perfectly charred and crispy. The vodka sauce didn't have enough flavor. Overall, the entire pie was a bit dense and doughy. I would come back and try the thinner square pie instead. Service: our waitress was the only one serving on a busy Sunday night. She was clearly extremely busy but she was attentive and checked on us several times. We appreciated her being so helpful! Atmosphere: we were pleasantly surprised by how spacious and. Nicely decorated this restaurant was. When you walk in, it's your typical pizza place with slices displayed in the case. Off to the right, they have a big dining room perfect for Sunday dinner. Overall, I'd be open to coming back and trying some of the additional types of pies that they have available. The dinners that others around us were ordering looked great too!

Yelp
Well. I don't know what else to add that's already been said for the quality and care that goes into their food. Brooklyn square provides the best pizza experience. Since they moved to Slice to order online, it's really made it easier to order from them. They are overwhelmed with orders, Slice makes it easier. The upside down is amazing. The Vodka pie might just beat it. Just a gooey mess of goodness. I never ate inside, but was recently renovated. The sesame seed crust is the best crust. Just owe it to yourself to try it. The pizza def is up in price, but you pay for quality.

Yelp
Doesn't get much better than Brooklyn Square Pizza in Jackson, NJ. 1st Timers tonight, we ordered an Upside Down Square pie, a chicken parm dinner, and a stuffed shells dinner. HUGE portions. The pizza was one of the Best I've had anywhere, it was that awesome. Crisp undercarriage, but light & airy on the inside. And the sauce...that sauce was phenomenal. Had an ever so slight kick to it also. Nice tang. My wife's chicken parm dinner was outstanding, she loved it. Service was stellar, Donna was very attentive & personable. Don't think I can't heap any more praise on Brooklyn Square, but they certainly deserve it. Can't wait for a return visit !

Yelp
Good pizza in a warm family environment. The ownership was very present in the dining room, checking with with guests and helping out (love to see this!) I went on a Friday night with my husband, and it was very lively. The restaurant is in an unassuming strip mall with easy parking. I am a not a huge fan of thick-crust pizza, but the ingredient quality seemed good. Definitely worth a visit if in the area.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the upside down pie. While it looks like a thick Sicilian, it was light similar to Detroit style. Excellent light dough with a crispy crust, tasty sauce and it was an amazing slice. The pepperoni was more of a traditional grandma style and was also very good but I preferred the upside down pie. Excited to grab a whole pie next time and try the vodka sauce.

Yelp
A coworker alerted me to this place, so I met a friend here recently to see if his claims were true. My friend was watching her carbs so it was up to me to figure out what pie to order, I knew that the upside down was the signature here, so I asked for that with garlic and shrooms on half......but was coerced by the owner to skip the garlic. Heresy! But I went along with it, he was very passionate about the product and wanted me to try it as he intended. We noshed on very good fried calamari while waiting for the massive pie to bake. We'd get that again. Her chicken panini arrived first and it looked and tasted great, no photo. The pie took several minutes to cool down, this specimen starts with fresh mozzarella on the crust, copious sauce is added and a layer of pecorino Romano tops it off. The sauce is a touch sweet but not too sweet, just enough to reduce acidity. The crust while being as thick as a Sicilian is a little bit airier, but perfectly crispy on bottom and sides. The pecorino adds a sharp contrast to sauce and creamy mozzarella. Very well done. This pie fed me for the next few days and I even had to freeze the last slice! I enjoyed it reheated just as much as the first serving. When I return I'll try the thinner square pie and hopefully I'll be allowed the garlic. The owner and entire staff are very friendly. If I lived nearby I'd be getting slices here a few times a week. We plan on returning.

Yelp
Seeing this place on the One Bite app and Dave's review of the upside down Sicilian(8.9), had my interest. We were at the Jackson outlet mall and took the ride over to Brooklyn Square to get lunch. We each got 2 slices and that was plenty as these are seriously topped pizzas. I had two different square slices and my wife had a round and square slice. All very good. Place was packed as they had a party going on in the main dining room so we ate at a picnic bench out front. Nice day so this worked. I'll go back when in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Sorry to disappoint everyone, but my recent experience at Brooklyn Square was a let down. We ordered two pizzas - Round Cheese Pizza and a Honeymoon Square Pizza. The Cheese pizza was very good - no complaints at all. The Honeymoon Square, while tasty, came with a totally soggy crust. Not appetizing at all. Based upon other positive reviews, I will try them again in the future.

Yelp
stopped here on way back from work, been trying to for a few months. it's been on one bite and got a pretty solid score and i have heard good things from other visitors. also i am a big square fan. it's a nice shop sedating inside and out in a little strip mall in rural nj. Staff was really nice and helped explain some of the slices i couldn't figure out what they were. Most of the slices at least today were square but there were a number of circles also. both meat and veggie choices. i think i ordered a plain square and a plain circle but the sauce on the circle was sort of chunky so not completely sure it was just plain. anyway both were really good they were light but thick and both saucy and cheesy. so they had good consistency and were well cooked and crunchy but these aren't like super thin light slices. they def carry some weight to them. Sort of surprised they got such a high one bite score not because they aren't really good just cause he usually likes a thinner lighter slice. but def worth the visit if you in the area. watch out some of the drivers in the parking lot are crazy so maybe not take a spot where your car is very exposed cause u may get clipped i was just waiting to get hit while i sat and ate and didn't but just saying be careful.

Yelp
Brooklyn Square has a great reputation. They make the best thick crust pizza this side of the Verrazano Bridge. Wonderful, fresh tomato sauce, gooey creamy mozzarella and a fluffy crunchy crust. Get her and get a pie and see what I mean. The people are friendly fast and attentive. You can see the hustle in every staff member. There's a big dining area and it's very homey. It may not be a fine dining experience but you will get delicious generous portions at fair prices and you'll go home with leftovers. Don't miss an opportunity to try this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Ok, ok, ok, where to begin. First off, I usually like thin and crispy so when my sister said I would need to eat this with a fork and knife... I was worried. But, I LOVED IT. The pizza was cooked to perfection. The sauce had chunks of tomatoes in it, the pepperonis were crispy and they also drizzled honey on it which somehow made it even better! The area to place your order was extremely packed so we decided to sit and order online. One it settled down j walked over and explain I placed it online and they were happy to switch it to an in house order. They also ensured everyone had what they needed throughout the course of the meal. Last, the pricing of it was well worth it due to its sheer size. It was $29 and it fed 6 people! Can't beat that. :)

Yelp
This place is always consistently good! We get it every year we come for our family Christmas party. We love the pepperoni and the original Brooklyn square pizza. It's literally amazing. The crust is crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. The sauce is my favorite, it's not too acidic and not too sweet! We can't wait to have it again next year
google avatar

Rob C.

Yelp
Awesome place and great staff. Fried Calamari and the square is a must. Usually go with the L&B style upside down but this time we did the Peters special and was not disappointed. Thinner, crispy and extremely fresh tasting. Plus it doesn't fill you up as fast.
google avatar

Yelp
Must have been an off night cause this pie was sloppy and too much cheese. Otherwise it had nice flavor. I've have had better from them. This was jackson location 12/21/23
google avatar

Renee H.

Yelp
I was a little hesitant coming here with a name like Brooklyn Square (had visions of Dominos) and well, shame on me!! We got "Peter's Special" thin crust square pie with the addition of sausage and it was delicious. Recommended by our lovely young server, Kayla, (who made sure we were well attended to). The tomato sauce is just a little chunky and super fresh. Most definitely will come back for one of the many steaming plates of pasta, veal, chicken, etc. that walked by
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
This joint never lets you down. Stopped in right after they opened up for a few Sicilian slices, and definitely 10/10!

L L.

Yelp
pizza was pretty good, but someone needs to check their ego. The guy behind the counter, who I guess was the owner? ( I heard him scold a staff member "don't try to make decisions for MY business." ) anyway, he told my boyfriend and I we wouldn't be able to sit to eat our slices because the dining room was full. Not an issue, I would've been happy to eat outside. When our slices came out he said we could sit in the dining room but we had to hurry because he had more people coming in. There were 8 empty tables in the dining room... only one of which was filled by the time we finished eating. Felt like we were a burden for patronizing this establishment... I'd recommend delivery or take out if you want to enjoy your food from here.

Yelp
Brooklyn Square Pizza has been on my hit list of pizza places to try for quite a while ever since seeing a glowing pizza review. We went with their signature go-to upside down square pie, and also tried a slice of their round pie (about $29-30 total after credit card fee & tax). The standard round pie slice (4/5) was decent, with just the right flavor accents in sauce and cheese for your typical NJ slice. I wasn't a huge fan of the sesame seeds on the crust, but I knew that's how they cook their traditional pie and was open to trying something a little different with the recipe. The upside down square pizza (4.5/5) was delicious, with a unique fluffy interior and somewhat crunchy base. To be honest, I've had better square pies with fresher and more robust tasting sauce and cheese, but still a solid experience such that I'd return and try some of their other menu items. Peter (the owner) was there and he was the kindest soul, taking the time out to chat with us and other customers. I always appreciate a genuinely nice owner, as people like him are what drives repeat business. I wish Yelp allowed half stars, as the experience overall was a solid 4.5 stars. I look forward to trying the Peter special (a thinner version of their upside down pie), as that might just push me to rounding up to a 5 rating, but I believe my rating is fair based on my first experience with Brooklyn Square Pizza.

Yelp
Amazing pizza it's a must ! Upside down square pizza and Johnny Pepe pizzas are family favorites . Fast friendly staff . Very clean .
google avatar

Scott T.

Yelp
The pizza here remains some of the best around- when we want good pizza this is the only place for us. After a decent number of more visits I've realized my initial judgement of the staff was off base. The owner and all the staff have been really friendly even on the busiest of nights we order. Despite this place being an extremely popular spot it has such an awesome home town vibe. The rapport between the staff and regulars makes it fun just to wait for your order to be ready.
google avatar

Kimberly G.

Yelp
Every time I try a pizza here, it's always fresh and fantastic! I love how the pizza is made to order and is piping hot! Everything I've had has been good: 1/2 upside down vodka with upside down square and Peter's special square pizza is also really good. When I went over the weekend, our server suggested that we try the upside down vodka and Gravesend, which was a delicious combination. I love getting my square pizza fix every time I'm in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
Very delicious food! Servers were energetic and nice to customers. I got the baked gnocchi; it was one of the most pillowy gnocchi I've ever eaten! I really enjoyed it!

Yelp
Finally made the trip to this place and we should have made it sooner. The upside down square is amazing. The dining room was recently refurnished and the owner and employees treat you like you are family. Great experience and better people.

Yelp
I come down from Manhattan to Visit my Dad, Best Pizza in Jackson, NJ hands down! The staff is fantastic! 3 meals so far and many more to Come! THANK YOU for awesome food at a great price! Bravo! Grazie'
google avatar

Jairo T.

Yelp
Lives up to the hype. We ordered the classic upside down square pizza and a side of meatballs. The pizza was fantastic! The middle dough is fluffy, sauce is sweet, salty cheese is present in adequate quantities. Crust was my favorite. Best mix of crunch on the outside and soft dough on the inside. Only thing I would've liked is a bit more crunch on the pizza undercarriage, not sure if possible with this style. Meatballs are large sized, well flavored but nothing out of this world. Pizza was warm and ready for pickup at estimated time, staff was friendly. There is a side room inside the shop where you can eat with friends/family. They also sell pizza by the slice if interested. Looking forward to returning to try other pies, have also heard good things about the paninis so ill have to try those too!
google avatar

Heather W.

Yelp
Amazing! The upside down square was my favorite, but the vodka sauce and pepperoni square were hits as well. Perfect doughiness with a crispy edge, delicious sauce. A must try!

Pamela M.

Yelp
Huge portions. Loved the dipping oil and Chicken Franceses. Will enjoy again. Great social following.

Yelp
Awesie pizza, quick delivery and great customer service. Highly recommend!! The crust is perfect and the seseme seeds are an added touch that just makes the crust tastier.

Stephen C.

Yelp
Pretty good. Sesame crust is different and good when I want something different. My family loves it.

Sandra M.

Yelp
Superb! We had lunch delivered to celebrate my parents 70th wedding anniversary and the food did not disappoint. The lasagna was packed with meat, the meatballs were tremendous, the sausage and peppers were another hit and the signature upside down pizza was unlike any other pizza I've had before.easy to order, delivered on time, cannot recommend this place enough.

Laura N.

Yelp
Cheese Pizza, Square Pie, Upside Down Pie, Chicken Ava, Mussels Marinara... these are some of the items weve enjoyed over the years

Michael D.

Yelp
Best I've ever had. And I'm from NY. It's #3 in the state as per NJ.com. And it always seems to be empty. Please support this Jackson NJ treasure.

Yelp
Always spot on. If you grew up on spumoni Gardens, you won't be disappointed Pete the owner is great. The staff is great. Highly recommended.

David M.

Yelp
Pete is the man! Get the upside down grandma pie! Lots of parking and pizza you can't beat!

James K.

Yelp
Peter and his staff knocked it out of the park! Best pizza I ever ate in my 66 years on this earth. Peter recommended half upside down and half gravesend. Go for it!

Amy S.

Yelp
Found this place after seeing the One Bite review and stopped in to try the pizza for lunch. Loved it so much we came back for dinner. For lunch, we tried the upside down square and the Peter square. Both were excellent. Super light crunchy crust, might be one of the best we ever tried. For dinner, we had the calamari (amazing), zuppa di mussels, chicken franchaise, linguine with clams, pasta with meatballs and sausage. Everything was excellent and HUGE. Big flavorful portions at really good prices. We'll definitely be back.

Paul B.

Yelp
Great food and great people. The pizza is unreal and the other foods have been equally as terrific as well. You're really missing out if you haven't tried this place.

Mathew F.

Yelp
Pizza is a subjective thing: but the upside down grandma was absolutely delicious. The sauce and cheese were excellent: but the dough was the show stopper. The owner was a gracious individual who greeted and spoke to every customer. Thoroughly enjoyed jt.

Tom C.

Yelp
Awesome upside down Sicilian! Pete is the best in New Jersey. Their food is worth the trip!!
google avatar

Yelp
Everything is excellent at Brooklyn Square Pizza from the food to the service

Christopher G.

Yelp
the staff was horrible at the front counter. For my first time visiting and looking forward to trying their pizza it was a total disappointment. Terrible customer service.
google avatar

Hunter B.

Yelp
I heard about this pizza place and had to try it out. In a somewhat empty plaza I parked and was able to get slices. I got the upsdie down slice and the probably the best square pizza I have had. Its fliffy and yet crust is crunchy. A great pizza that people should stop by if you are near by.
google avatar

Ava D.

Yelp
I love this place. The penne vodka was amazing and the meatball sub was just okay... The pizza here is always amazing.
google avatar

Luigi L.

Yelp
I was told that you come here for the food ... not the ambiance, and they were right. This is far from a fine dining experience, but the food is pretty good. Our server was very nice. We were 8 people, so there was enough variety at the table to get a good mix of dishes. Although many people just come for the delicious pizzas, we had full dinners, including veal, chicken, shrimp, and pasta dishes. Everything came out hot and tasted good. Portions were large and priced fairly. I'd give it 5 stars, but I wish you didn't have to walk through a crowd of people picking up pizzas to get to the dining room.
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
Really enjoyed everything we got. The dinning room is a little small, but the staff was great!

Charlie R.

Yelp
Here and there I'd been hearing good things about Brooklyn Square Pizza. When they opened one up in Jackson in a shabby little strip mall, I drove by it many times but saying to myself: "Gee, I've got to try that sometime." So, today I had some other errands to do in the area and I planned to go there . . . and I did. WOW . . . was I disappointed. I looked in the case . . . the guy behind it was daydreaming (or something) and I had to wave at him to explain to a couple of different things I pointed at. He had an odd foreign accent (definitely not Italian) and I finally settled on something with sausage on it. I grabbed a Pepsi from the cooler . . . he heated up the "slice" and put it on a very cheap and flimsy paper plate . . . and I went in to the completely empty dining room (this was mid afternoon around 3) and sat down at a table. Once in a while I'll run across exceptionally good pie . . . this wasn't it . . . not even close. Here at the Jersey Shore one of our specialties is "thin crust" pizza . . . this was the complete opposite . . . and the topping (i.e. sauce) had an odd taste. I'm at a loss for words to even describe it but it left an aftertaste in my mouth all the way home. I ate about half of the slice (chunk) . . . and had to ask for salt as there were no condiments or spices on any of the tables . . . but that didn't help. I emphatically DO NOT RECOMMEND Brooklyn Square Pizza.

Christie D.

Yelp
What's all the hype about? Pizza was nothing to rave appoint. Owner is so rude, I wouldn't give him my business.
google avatar

Vinnie R.

Yelp
I know the place is popular, and I know them (and L&B) from Brooklyn. But none of that matters. Just not happy with staff who made a mistake being barked at publicly by the boss in a waiting area full of customers while I stand there waiting to be acknowledged. Humiliating for the employee and unpleasant for the customer. Other friends and family, the same experience, and they won't go back because of that. And again, they got my order wrong: 'B'square, not burned'. It was burned, over cooked, dry. And then getting nickeled and dimed using a charge card. When they want to get it right, they get it right. Maybe they're so busy they don't even care? There are other options, sorry.
