"Temporary pop-up Buffy’s Mexi-Casian Grill is departing this week in expectation of the spring food truck season." - Brenna Houck

Peruvian Restaurant to Join Atomic Chicken’s Ranks in New Center - Eater Detroit

"Atomic Chicken is preparing to open its doors again next week with a new restaurant joining its ranks. Co-owner Scott Moloney tells Eater that partner Buffy Campeau will setting up shop inside the New Center restaurant with dishes from her food truck Buffy’s Mexi-Casian Grill. The new “dual concept” format will allow Atomic Chicken to offer customers some alternatives to its fried chicken and chicken sandwiches, says Moloney, while giving Buffy’s a place to showcase its American and Mexican-influenced food during the mobile restaurant’s winter off-season. During the brief closure, the restaurant team has been busy removing its chalkboard menus in favor of three video screens that will be updated regularly to feature both Buffy’s and Atomic’s dishes. Both restaurants will share the kitchen space and POS system meaning customers will be able to mix and match their fried chicken with items like tacos and sliders. Atomic will also be updating its menu with a few new items and adjusting prices to make the food “a little bit more affordable,” Moloney says. Buffy’s is expected to run out of Atomic until food truck season starts again and — depending on how the addition is received — possibly longer. Moloney says the partners have also toyed with turning a portion of Atomic’s space into a casual restaurant incubator. That format give local entrepreneurs opportunities to test their food business startups out of the existing restaurant. Despite increased development activity in the area, New Center is still an evolving market for restaurant businesses, Moloney admits. “Atomic got off to a great start in the first two or three months,” he says, “and then summer came and we had some air conditioning issues and we lost all of our momentum.” By freshening up the menu, bringing in Buffy’s, and possibly inviting more pop-up restaurant residencies, Moloney hopes to keep customers excited about dining out in the neighborhood. As for Atomic’s temporarily shuttered location in Clawson, Moloney says he still owns the building and is slowly working to address some issues with the property including resurfacing the parking lot. Whether the restaurant will still trade in chicken though remains to be seen. “I can’t promise it’s going to be an Atomic Chicken,” he says." - Brenna Houck

I was extremely disappointed when eating from this food truck at Eastern market yesterday. My friend and I ordered three chicken tacos that came with tortilla chips and salsa each. When I say these were the driest tacos I’ve ever had in my life… Spending $30 on dry tacos was crazy… You’re better off going to southwest for tacos. REAL SPILL

If I could leave zero stars, I WOULD. The food is overpriced for what you get and its not even authentic. The service is nasty and they need a new cashier because the one old raggedy lady is rude and slow. Never again. They don’t accommodate or cater to their customers.

I went there on Taco Tuesday expecting to be wowed since their physical location is in the former diggs of Tijuana Express. Honestly I was not wowed. Their $1 taco specials were on flour tortillas and for a extra $.25 could get them on a corn tortilla. That didn't please me and the taste was just ground beef with cilantro and onions. Bland. Tacos that come with lettuce, cheese, diced tomatoes.. everything that you normally get on a taco was a quarter additional charge... Not going to make too many friends in the neighborhood with that!!! On this trip didn't make a friend out of me either. I always have to give new establishments two tries, so I'll be going one more time, keep your eyes peeled for the next update 😳

Went to the food truck when it was in cadillac Square, super great food! I definitely need to try the restaurant next time I'm that way! The ground beef chimichanga was great.

Google
Service (5/5) - For being a food truck they offer very quick orders. The food is never poorly made /put together or cold. The people working are easy to talk too and are open to questions about the menu Food (6/5) - This is the most addicting Mexican food I have had. The grande burrito is insanely good. The carne asada fries are also a go-to.

The pulled pork tasted weird like shredded iron also the chicken and beef was very bland. I ate one taco and my stomach instantly started to hurt and cramp up. Terrible.

Yelp
10/10 recommend! There's not a set schedule, sometimes she's not out due to weather or other events, but she will post on the FB page in the afternoon if she'll be out that day and it's usually 5-8ish, sometimes earlier. Some days they have tacos which I also, sadly, havent had yet... and it's not easy to find a menu if you're planning ahead but I just message and ask what the menu for the day is, they'repretty quick to respond. I've included a photo of the slider menu they usually serve. The fries are crazy good. They're not average French fries... they're like twisty, but not curly fry twisty and everyone knows fries in a carry out box aren't top notch, but these stay crispy and fresh on the drive home somehow. The OG slider is GREAT. Like, a basic slider (but better). Ketchup, mustard, cheese, grilled onion, pickle. You can't go wrong. My husband gets his pLaIn but I get the grilled onion and pickles and it's perfect. The ketchup & mustard is like White Castle, mixed together, and the pickles are extra tart, but they're perfect for these sliders. They're hand pattied, fresh, sometimes messy in the best way, and I can't say enough good things. We're addicted to this spot! My favorite is the jalapeño popper slider. I almost skipped ordering it our first time, but it is the best slider I've ever had. The Facebook page doesn't show all their different varieties, so it was hard to picture. Patty, cheddar cheese, BACON JAM, which is amazing, fried jalapeños and jalapeño cream cheese. The spice level is PERFECT, I promise that even though there's 2 different jalapeno items, it's not too hot! Also recommend getting a side of the jalapeño cream cheese to dip your fries. It's not like Philadelphia cream cheese... Trust me. My kids love the OG sliders and the Lil Mac (yes, like a Big Mac but a slider). I love the OG and popper so much that I haven't brought myself to try any of the other sliders yet, but I know they've all got to be top-notch! I'll definitely update when I get around to trying them.

Yelp
Great chicken taco's at company event! Service was great! Only downfall not enough food for everyone.

Yelp
My husband got to check out this place a while back when they were at the Detroit Fleat in Ferndale. Ordered at the truck and there are seats on site to eat the items. It's a very casual dining. We ordered the elote, 3 chicken tacos and Mexican cheese fries with added beans. The chicken tacos weren't too bad. The cheese fries were okay, rather flavorless, the fries were super soft and soggy and over fried for me. The elote was smothered with butter, cheese and seasoning, too much butter for me. I prefer a bit of cotija cheese and some seasoning only. Corn if it's sweet and good, doesn't need a lot of stuff on it. At least we tried it out.

Yelp
The carne asada fries are WHERE IT'S AT. Really delicious - perfectly cooked and seasoned. Yum! Service was pretty fast and they were very busy. My friend had the burrito, which he said was good but not great. Get the fries!

Stephanie P.

Yelp
Had the jalepeno sliders and taco fries, delicious! Jelly on the sliders provided a nice sweet with the spicy. Taco fries had a hint or taste of coney in them, although different, I'm not complaining. Excited to see the food they have available when they open a brick and mortar spot at Southfield/Allen Rd.

Tara K.

Yelp
I visited the food trucks in Cadillac Square in Downtown Detroit on a Monday afternoon. I try carne asada fries wherever I go, these were less than average. The fries looked like they were fresh cut and they were the best part (they would have been better just plain, honestly). I found the steak gray in color, dry and lacking flavor. The queso was too thin, which made the fries soggy. They cost $10.

Yelp
Visited the food truck today. I got a chicken taco and chips & queso. Both were absolutely delicious!

Yelp
Went to the taco tequila festival had there super taco it was huge tasted amazing and got ny food fast definitely recommend eating from there

Yelp
Went here last Taco Tuesday for the first time ever. I have to say these were the best tacos I have had in the area, they were delicious. I got 2 of the steak, chicken and chorizo tacos, and I absolutely loved them all. They even made it the 30 minute drive home and were still great. I will absolutely be back and have to try more of the menu.

Yelp
I got to join Allison for lunch yesterday. The occasion? Buffy's! She had talked them up, and so I figured I had to make the drive out. They've got a handful of options on the menu, all of which sounded great. Allison swore by the chimi, though, so I had to order one. It comes with beef or chicken, sour cream, cheese, pico, lettuce, and two drizzled sauces: creamy guac and a mexi/chipotle type. I added hot sauce (they had about six to choose from!) for an extra kick. The shell was crispy and just bready enough create some texture for the meal. The chimi was excellent! Very very flavorful, and not just from the sauces. The portion was generous too. I was completely stuffed afterward. We also shared a side of rice, which was far from your typical restaurant fare. The seasoning was great, and it wasn't dry at all. Well worth the extra $2.

Yelp
Chimichanga is the best I've ever had in Detroit sorry Mexican village but Buffy's is the bomb check her out. And never a long wait. Love her

Yelp
My husband and I decided to try Buffy's because we were craving Mexican and Buffy's is in the location that used to have my favorite Mexican food Downriver. I was sorely disappointed. I ordered the enchilada dinner with an a la carte street taco (both with beef). My husband ordered the taco dinner with beef. We ordered a side of chips, guacamole, and hot salsa. We asked for medium salsa with each of our dinners. The salsas were the worst part of the meal. Neither had any flavor. They were both heat and salt and not much else. The beef tasted burnt. The rice was undercooked and had the bad burnt beef flavor to it, too. The restaurant was out of guacamole, so I can't comment on that. The enchiladas (3) were very tiny, about 3" long and maybe an inch around. The sauce on top was burned. The beans and the chips were good, but we will not be ordering from Buffy's again. Especially at a cost of over $50 for this meal.

Yelp
I've ate from this food truck 3 times and I was hoping the third time would be a charm with the quesadilla...cause you can't mess up a quesadilla, right? Wrong. It was so runny that the tortilla was soggy and there was gristle in the chicken. Fries were so overcooked, someone thought I was eating sweet potato fries. I couldn't finish them. The tacos are equally bad. Stick with the chimichanga but you may go hungry after.

Hank's Dad R.

Yelp
This was my second food truck experience and it was much better than my first. I had a chimichanga and fries. The chimichanga was kind of small, but quite good. It was different than I am used to in that some of the ingredients weren't inside the shell, instead piled in the basket it was served in. It was cooked very well and the ingredients were quite good. i would go back for this again certainly. The fries were simply great. Hand cut and cooked very well without being overly greasy.

Kristina A.

Yelp
I normally never eat off of a food truck, but thought I'd give it a shot. I figured a $6 chimichanga was worth a try. First, the prices that are on-line, don't apply when it comes to the truck, it was $2 more. It was tasty, but for $8.00 one fairly small chimichanga with nothing else was not a good value. At the least it should have come with rice, or beans or something. There was hardly any guacamole. I will say they moved the pace along pretty good though. Not quite what I expected - maybe I've been watching too many food truck shows.

Joe M.

Yelp
Got 3 tacos with 3 different meats. The corn shells were right out of the package with no toasting on flattop or anything. All meats were fairly bland. Sauces were out and the one that was unmarked was ridiculously hot. I can handle hot, but this was just heat without flavor. This sauce or the tacos themselves messed up my stomach bad. Tossed all 3 tacos in the trash. Thanks for the messed up stomach! Not again.

Brittany R.

Yelp
so glad i tried this place again! this time i got the chicken chimichanga with a side of rice and salsa, amazeballs! every topping was fresh and the salsa was great. the chimichanga is stuffed with your choice of chicken or beef, sour cream, pico, and cheese. it's all topped with guacamole and their special sauce. i got mine without any sauce/guac on top, and it was still great. perfectly fried in a crisp flour tortilla, and it wasn't too heavy and didn't make me feel stuffed after eating it. can't wait to try the taco salad next time!

N Aziza D.

Yelp
Came across this tasteful delight in the Detroit Eastern Market. My family enjoyed the chimichanga, fries sliders and beef burrito. The sliders and Chimichanga is our favorite! The food is delicious and flavorful. Looking forward to filling my belly with Buffy's since her food is made with love!

Gregory K.

Yelp
New truck for our building today. Thought I'd start out by trying the Hand-Cut french fries. Good thing, that way I only wasted $3.00. Besides most of the fries being ends and less than inch long, they were way over cooked almost burnt.

Jeff S.

Yelp
Tried the food truck for the first time today and would not go back. I had the chicken quesadilla and it was very small, dripping with an oily liquid, and had hardly any meat on it, especially for $8. Will not be going back. I guess that's what you get for eating food from downriver.

Daniel M.

Yelp
They are fast and delicious. Most trucks can't handle a lunch rush, but they do it very well and serve quality food. I get the burrito w/o beans. Love re-fried beans, but I am dieting. The food doesn't pack the spice most Mexican food trucks have, but that is ok with me. They have hot sauce at their condiment table. If you are in Campus Martius and see them, go pay em a visit.

Peggy B.

Yelp
Had the Chicken Quesadillas and the Loaded Nacho Fries! Both were so amazing! Can't wait for this food truck to visit our work site again!

Mark S.

Yelp
Had the Chicken Grande Burrito. Very good, but a little on the mild side. I need to remember the hot sauce next time.

P T.

Yelp
Buffy's provided their fare-from-truck services at Maker Faire 2013. The food tasted fine, but they are not at all equipped to service an on-going line. Waited 25-30 minutes just to place an order (with only 5 people ahead of me in line); waited ANOTHER 30 minutes to actually receive the food. The two people manning the truck have ZERO people-service skills, acting very put-off for even having to deal with their customers. If they can't even flash a smile or act the least bit cordial, then they need to get out of - of all things - the food service business.

Shannon J.

Yelp
I visited Buffy's Mexi-Casian Grill in Detroit yesterday as they were all set up at the spot where the new Red Wings arena is going to be built. Good food, friendly workers. I ordered the fresh cut fries nachos and a pop. It was very fresh and delicious. The reason I am not giving a 5/5 star is because 1, the portion was quite small for $6, and 2, my total bill was $8 for both the nachos and pop, and my online banking states $8.48. While I am not crying over the 48 cents, the person at the counter should have informed it was going to be $8.48 WITH TAX, not just $8 as he stated when taking my debit card. I am keen on customer service, and obviously, ACCURATE pricing.
