Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day all Month Long at These NYC Bars | Eater

"Decked out with a pool table and dart boards, Bull McCabe’s is easy to make into an all-day affair. The bar celebrates St. Patrick’s Day right — after all, it’s had 20 years of practice. While the menu boasts a cold brew martini, Irish coffee, hot apple cider, and hot toddy all made with smooth Jameson Irish whiskey, keep in mind that this is the NYC home of the Jameson pickleback shot." - Lee Musho

Vibe was low key. Not overly crowded which is nice. Pool tables in back. Yummy pickle back shots!

I found this place to be very fun, lively, and the robust Schoff cider lifted away centuries of stress from my bones. Everybody seems to be having a good time and I got the chance to be myself in the good old midnight. My friends think I look like Alucard, and it is fitting for the Fall. In this bar, I finally got the chance to rewind. The best looking lads and ladies presented themselves in this fine late evening. The drinks themselves are of top notch quality. I recommend the Schoff. It is good once in a while to unwind. But responsibility must return for most of our days. Once in a while is great for a while. Thank you McCabes, for a wonderful night. In addition, I received a complementary drink for the wonderful moment. Cheers!

Google
Nice low key bar with decent priced drinks. Staffs are friendly and nice, and if you catch them have a good day they might give free shots. Atmosphere feels like a dive bar but comfortable for casual drinking. Overall great bar.

OMG!The laughter drew me to enter this bar, although I don't drink. They were celebrating a birthday girl, and it was my birthday too!08/27!!!They shared the cake and wished me a happy birthday 🎂 🥳 🎉 🎈. Then spent hours playing pool.Just a wonderful bunch of guys and girls! Thanks, from the bottom of my heart ❤️!

Google
This is my favorite East Village bar (since Grassroots Tavern across the street closed) However, I really wish you guys would go back to opening at 12:00pm like you used to! I would be there everyday if only you opened earlier.

Google
This is the best bar ever. It has the most beautiful bartenders and great attention! Great prices, I love it.

Google
Great little watering hole. They have a great selection of both alcohol and beers to choose from. My husband only like IPAs and craft beers and they some he liked. The prices are good, reasonable, and service has been great both times we were here. I absolutely loved my Jameson's Hot Toddy! I'm sure we will visit again as this is now my go too place while in this area of East Village.

Google
My friend and I came in and while we were deciding what to order for a drink we’re going to use the bathroom. The bartender pulled my friend aside and said we had to order first. While I was actively looking at the menu to figure out what to order for a drink. It just felt a bit pointed as we were the only two black women at the bar and we had witnessed other people use the bathroom prior to ordering a drink as well. If you are a black woman/care about the comfort of other black women I would spend you money elsewhere and skip over this place.

Yelp
Stopped in on our way to another venue and decided to get pickleback shots! Not sure how my mind has convinced me whiskey and pickle juice is healthier than a green tea shot, but this has been my go to for a quick shot. We were served quick and the bartender was friendly. The bar was pretty busy but seemed like a good vibe inside.

Yelp
This spot crafts dishes that make your taste buds dance. Every person working there delivers excellent guidance with kindness. The flavors impressed completely! You receive plentiful portions at fair rates. This restaurant has too many strengths to name.

Yelp
i was assaulted by the bouncer for not ordering a drink fast enough, my head was banged in to a metal wall and I was choked out o the floor because I chose to advocate for my self verbally on how this was unfair and discriminatory . there are human rights and laws public business have to follow. I was attacked with my back to the security and severely injured. I filed a police report but cancelled it because I didn't want to get another black man arrested. but as I wake up this morning and see multiple people complaining about this bouncer and me waking up in pain with a sore throat, elbow and hip. soemthing needs to be done about this. I spoke to many other bars and no one agrees with how you treat customers befor they are ready to order.

Yelp
This is a standard, casual pub. We were able to snag a table on a Saturday night. It was crowded and loud, but you could still have a conversation. They had a good playlist that leaned toward alternative rock. I only had a well drink, but I did see that they have a large cocktail list including a full selection of hot cocktails that looked fun to try.

Yelp
We stopped in here for a quick drink and the bartenders were super friendly. That's have pool for anyone interested in playing and TV's to watch the game. It's a great bar for pregame drinks!

Yelp
Absolute terrible service. We went to this bar and we were trying to figure out what to drink, but within 10 minutes we were told we needed to leave because we weren't drinking. It was incredibly rude and terrible customer service. I informed the bounce kicking us out that we were still deciding but he still proceeded to tell us we needed to leave. I have never been treated like this before at a bar in NYC or anywhere. We were simply planning what to order and were immediately kicked out. DO NOT GO HERE. The staff is rude and that ruins the entire ambiance.

Yelp
Bull McCabe's has always been good to me. Whenever I find myself stuck in the rain and on St. Marks Place I end up at Bull McCabe's. They always have some kind of happy hour special going no matter the time of day. A true dive bar with fantastic indoor and outdoor spring, summer, and fall seating. Although I've never tired the food the drinks are always perfectly made and I'll keep returning as long as Bull McCabe's doors are open!

Yelp
I was here to celebrate my irish friends birthday. I walked in sober, carrying my friends open container. the bouncer asked for my id and let me inside before telling me i couldn't have outside drinks. he never asked me to leave. I told him i was sorry, forgot i had it, and started waving to my girlfriend to let her know i was going outside to toss her drink. the bouncer caught my hand and started crushing it with his grip and started shoving me. I raised the bev to defend myself, he took it and poured it in my face/ eyes as he held me. After, the female bar staff came to basically smirk as i started to cry and accuse me of provoking what happened. It was a pretty scary night, not a happy birthday for my friend. i'm a 21 year old girl.

Alisha C.

Yelp
We were bar hopping and came across Bull McCabe's and it seemed super cozy and a good vibe. We went inside and sat at the bar where there were seats. Within 5 minutes the bartender asked us if we wanted drinks. We had been drinking and wanted a break, so we said not yet. She told us we can't sit at the bar so we obliged and sat at a table away from the bar. A few minutes later the bouncer told us we had to leave. There is no other establishment in NYC that would kick us out for not ordering a drink in under 15 minutes. This is outrageous customer service. I was even texting my friends about how cute this place was and how we should go again. But I will never go here again and am happy I did not spend a dime on a place that treats customers this way.

Chelsea A.

Yelp
I usually love coming here, but I was here on August, 22nd, around 7 o'clock and the little bartender with the blonde streak In her hair was cold as hell. She didn't even greet us, first thing she said was "IDs!" While holding out her hand. Next... Plenty of other cool nyc bars around that don't charge 10 bux for a shot of vodka.

Yelp
Love. It here (yes i'm drunk ) fuck it. Great bar tender. Fun time. Cool crowd. Go here. Great music. One pool table. One darts game Fun.

Jon C.

Yelp
4 guys in kilts descended upon this place and loved it so much we didn't want to leave. It was a very welcoming crowd and lots of great people from all over socializing. Drinks were great, and bar staff were fast and friendly.

Yelp
Good low key bar. Reasonable drink prices and not too crowded on weeknights. Surrounded by tons of restaurants.

Yelp
Wack. Pulled up and said my ID was fake. Bartender power tripping wack job. Showed him 10 forms of ID but still was denied. Poor bar lost out on a rack maybe two.

Katherine C.

Yelp
my friend and i went here on st. patrick's day and we ordered a water to start. the bartender looked at us and said " this is a bar, you're not ordering just that" and refused to serve us until we order. we ordered moment's later but never had i ever had a bar refused to serve me because i asked for water. you can't tell me that this bartender didn't want the fucking tip. i'll never go back

Aleah J.

Yelp
Bartenders would not give me a water despite the fact that I was dehydrated and needed one. I was with a group who was buying drinks and they still denied me of water. Service were all assholes would love to give 0 stars

Edilberto G.

Yelp
This is an awesome bar. Long bar area for ordering or sitting down good layout that can accommodate large parties they don't serve food which is a plus because you can bring in your own or have it delivered to the bar outdoor area right in the thick of it in St Marks point off for the men's bathroom. Why are the urinals so weirdly high up, I swear you gotta be at least 6'1 to properly use (unless you don't mind trying your luck and peeing up)

Yelp
It is what it is. And it's a dive bar. So I guess that's A-OK. I haven't been here at night, but a group of us were in search of some Easter Sunday post-brunch digestive relaxing in the sun with a beer in hand. We walked from Union Square before we came across Bull McCabe's. The slightly sub-terrainian, below street level outdoor seating is perfect for sitting in the Spring afternoon sun. It's also great for viewing the funky Saint Mark's Square crowd strolling by. And it IS funky, even in the daytime. If you rather be in the dark watching a game or shooting pool, you have that option. The rest room is small, the urinals spaced about 2 inches apart with no dividers, and behind the door. You could get smashed into the urinal if someone opens the door too fast. Everything is covered in graffiti and stickers, or slaps if you will. Very divey and goes with the place. But, $5 for a bigger-than-a-pint of Hoegaarden draft, and I was happy on a slow Easter afternoon.

Andrew G.

Yelp
Amazing bartender Jenna! She makes great drinks and is simply awesome. If you're a tourist, grab a local draft. If you're a local, grab your usual stool. Great atmosphere.

Gregory A.

Yelp
Jenna is amazing and provides amazing service. This place rules! 10/10. Love this place!

Yelp
Great place bartenders are very respectful. Whatever issues that may occur there it's handled professionally and fair .

Jacob M.

Yelp
Within 2 seconds of looking at my friends legal ID from Illinois, the bouncer immediately rejected him. I guess when you're not from NY you can't get in here - my NY ID was fine. Very unprofessional. They act like they need a snickers. You're not you when you're hungry.

Yelp
In all fairness I did come here during one of the craziest partying days in the city....SANTACON!!! My friends picked this bar since the others in the area were packed. When they arrived they were able to walk right in but once I arrived there was a line that I had to wait on for about twenty minutes. This place was packed with customers dressed in Santa outfits and Christmas suits. Being as packed as it was my friends wanted to hang around the outside area for a bit which is basically a smoking section for most. Inside was packed but I was still able to mingle and grab a seat with my friends. The bartenders/staff were friendly and attentive even though they had to endure a bunch of drunken Santa's. No complaint with my drinks nor beers but I did get mostly basic drinks. I wouldn't go out of my way to hang here but if needed to grab a drink and in the area then I'd possibly consider coming back to see how the atmosphere really is here.

Yelp
IRISH DIVE BAR on St. Mark's .. the place to be!! my fault for coming on a weekday, when it was empty, so i don't know how packed this place gets on the weekend! so obviously IRISH BAR=IRISH CAR BOMBS (if you didn't know, take 'em right away before they curdle).. yum!! bar tenders were friendly & that's all she wrote!
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Sometimes you find yourself on St. Mark's Place, and yet you are not a teenager. This is one place to go. Bull McCabe's is surprisingly spacious. It doesn't aspire to be more than a dive bar, and it isn't. But they've got good drafts, a friendly staff, and outdoor seating on nice days. Stop in!
google avatar

Sherry W.

Yelp
great vibes! great place to hang out with friends with good drinks. It can get pretty loud/rowdy but always a fun night in the St. Mark area.
google avatar

Sherry L.

Yelp
Started off my Halloween night here with some friends. With both the World Series and Halloween going on, the place was at capacity when I arrived. I was actually told to wait outside because they couldn't let anyone in until someone else left...The bouncer was pretty adamant about this rule, but he was polite about it. Thankfully the movement in and out of the bar was relatively fluid, because I was able to meet up with my friends after just a few minutes. McCabe's is a typical sports bar. Its location on St. Marks Place makes it convenient for barhopping, but I wouldn't consider it in my repertoire of frequent stomping grounds. Although, I would love to be back on a non-holiday to experience the true vibe!

Yelp
I saw a pool table through the window so I decided to pop in to this "Irish pub" for an after work drink and a few games of pool. Oddly, everyone inside seemed to be Russian with thick accents, dark leather jackets, shaved heads, etc. No problem, I began to play them in pool and found, to my secret delight, the table rules were call everything, every rail, everything. Plus, it you get snookered on the 8, you just have to hit three rails to avoid loss of game. Now we're talking! If you don't play correctly, the Russian mafia is watching, with unblinking eyes. The dark stares in this dark establishment didn't warm up too much as I began to win every game, without really showing my full speed. I did get some polite respect as I banked a few balls even though the rails were either dead or rock hard. My martinis were only 7 bucks and they gave me the stainless container, so in effect, it was two for one. Za vashe zdorovie!

Yelp
Great place to go. It has a homey neighborhood vibe to it. The bartenders always remember you if you come more than once. They have a pool table in the back of the bar which is fun. Also darts as well. :::::BATHROOM ALERT:::: The woman's bathroom is somewhat clean. It is not bad considering it is on St.Marks place. The toilet paper is always well stocked which is a good thing. The soap is always there. It is a very roomey place to have a lot of your friends come with you and the music is random which is always a treat.

Yelp
I've been rocking out at this bar before the big Y2K bug. I returned last night for a little reunion. MJ the bartender is friendly and good with buy backs. There are two other dudes serving drinks, but I pay no attention to them. There are open areas with seating in the front and back, for smokers and those who like to sit outdoors on nice weather days. Bar has a good electronic dart board, bar pool table and those Megatouch coin-op games that have word games, trivia and assorted photo hunt. Management removed the driving game from the back. Playing pool can be challenging, with patrons going to the men's restroom or folks overcrowding at the bar. Playing darts can be challenging as patrons go to the women's restroom or pass to go to the outside area. Several TV's are setup for watching college and professional games. The restrooms are crummy. The men's restroom is cramped with 2 urinals, a sink and a toilet. If you have to drop a deuce I suggest you go somewhere else. The women's restroom is a single room with a toilet and sink. I've seen multiple chicks going in together and wonder what happens inside besides crossing the streams. I've also seen a dude in a wheelchair use the women's restroom. Then again, I've seen stranger things happen before. Keep in mind, no matter how long the line is, if MJ has to go, she can cut the line. It's good to be the queen. Crowds can vary; it can be a sausage party or a mix of village weirdos and sometimes women. IFHTP 3+

Yelp
I've been coming here for a few years now and had an incredulous experience with one of the bartenders working on Thursday, October 12 at 8:45. My friend wanted to play pool after dinner so I suggested Bull McCabes since we were in the area and I'm a regular. There was a good 35 people in there when we arrived around 7 and the pool table was unoccupied so we played two games. The quarter slot on the table was jammed so my friend asked the bartender for change, exchanged 4 quarters for a dollar bill for our third and last game. That's when things got really weird. We were near the end of our game when one of the bartenders (scruffy guy with an accent and a man bun) asks my friend if he would like a drink, to which my friend replied that we were heading out in a few minutes because our other friend had a stomach ache from dinner. The bartender then aggressively tells my friend that we can't play pool unless we get get a round of drinks. Again, my friend politely refused...then the bartender yelled at him "you don't understand English?" He walks around the bar to the pool table and grabs all the balls. Our other friend tells the bartender that we paid for the pool game but all he says is "sorry ladies" and sinks the rest of the balls, so we can't play anymore. I've never had any issues with the bartenders here and I'm pretty sure there's no rule that you can only shoot pool if you're drinking. It sounds like the bartender was having a slow day and just wasn't making much in tips so he bullied us into getting drinks. It's really not my problem hes not making enough, he should apply to Bar 13, PHD, Public...To be clear I have no issues with Bull McCabes itself, but they really need to screen these prick bartenders before hire. I had to apologize to my friends and explain that this has never happened before and definitely not the Bull McCabes I've been going to for years.

Yelp
Beer was priced on the regs and there was pacman in the back. Chomp on that.

Yelp
Perfect place to chill, hang out with friends, and simply have a damn good time. Out door seating, pool table, not to mention, a dart board! There's a plane in the back yard. Nuts! Booze and more booze. Erica the bartender has an awesome playlist. Andrew, a quick, and a super cool bartender, makes the experience even better. Cheers! NYC

Yelp
Hands down my favorite bar on saint marks. It's always a good time. Never overly crowded. Personally I enjoy a bar that you can choose to hangout with just your friends or try to meet new people and this bar lets you do both. They always have good music playing, and the bartenders are always super nice.
google avatar

Alan G.

Yelp
The bartender wouldn't serve me a glass of water. At 2:30AM. There were 2 other people at the bar. I understand that it's a bar and you're trying to make money off drinks, but denying me water and then interrogating me on whether or not I came from a bar and telling me I can't use the bar as a "pit stop" isn't gonna make me wanna buy drinks at all! And then telling me to "call 311 pal?" Never EVER stepping foot in here again. The bartender had no right to assume that I won't buy drinks, and it is ultimately up to ME if I want to buy a drink, it isn't mandated. To be so rude and loud and to embarrass me like that when there isn't even more than 2 people the place is ridiculous - would my glass of water inconvenience the bartender? No. He just wanted to be a prick.

Yelp
Bull McCabe's is a great dive bar choice in the midst of the madness on St. Mark's street in the East Village. While I normally do not spend much time that area (due mostly to the madness), it was fun to try something new. They have great happy hour specials that last til 7:00pm...$3 rolling rock, natty lights, and cans of BOMB beer, $4 bottles of bud/bud light and wells, and $5 drafts. The owner was also awesome and gave our happy hour group the specials ALL NIGHT long...maybe the best deal I've been able to work out so far! Plus, the BOMB beer was a fun experiment...apparently a new addition to their menu, and the can looks like a crazy soda can (can anyone say mountain dew) you probably could walk around in public drinkin' beer and no one be the wiser. The bar itself offers a lot of fun and games, with a pool table, an electronic dart board, and video games in the back. There IS an outside patio in the back, complete with an airplane, however as of 5/19/2011 it is currently CLOSED. The bartender told me they don't have a fire escape, and so had to close it. Not sure if it will re-open any time soon. They do have a patio in the front though, even if it is pretty small. It's great for people-watching on St. Marks! Overall, Bull McCabe's is a great dive for a beer with a group of friends. It never got too crowded, but it was a Thursday, and kind of a rainy crappy weather day. Good things to know....no food is served, but there's $1 pizza and cheap delicious falafel just across the street. They DO take credit cards, a nice bonus for a dive bar. The bathroom is not the best, but then again, it is a dive bar!!!

Trina S.

Yelp
Amazing service, fun drink specials. A lot of outdoor seating. Exactly what was needed.

Yelp
Fun place for a get together. Really Enjoyed the cider and the picklebacks. And whoever was in charge of the tunes, A+

Yelp
I give you two stars primarily because you have Galaga. It would have been one star for these reasons. -7 dollars for a beer? (please, don't kid yourself) -The lovely lady serving me at the bar threw a coaster at me. (seemingly because I ordered a beer from her when she wasn't ready) -You have photohunt (but the non-nude one, whats the fun in that) I wish I could justify going back ever for the Galaga but im sure I can find that somewhere else with beers that won't sacrifice my rent money.

Yelp
$3 Jager shot! Great dive bar! Friendly bartenders! This place is crowded but not as crowded as Continental. $3 Jager shot is so sweeeeet!

Yelp
Barnight on St. Marks? I'll have to pretend that I'm in college again. Fortunately, the crowd at Bull McCabe's happened to be older. It was also a low key kind of crowd. I walked in expecting to find my friends and found no one. Actually, the bar was pretty dead. Then I realized there was an outdoor seating area and there they all were. Presto! The cold Fall night was immediately turned into a cool Spring evening. The outdoor seating area was like a fabulous backyard with trees and a full on airplane crashed on the wall. We drank under the stars and pretty soon all that was missing was a campfire and smores. Bull McCabe's is great for large groups. There's tons of tables outside and even more chairs to steal for your ever growing posse. If darts and pool are what you fancy, then head back into the warm indoors. My only caveat about Bull McCabe's are the huge rats outside. Be careful. I doubt they'll drop on you but I do recommend watching them crawl on the walls and wires just to make sure you know where they are going. It's not the college kids you have to worry about here at Bull McCabe's.
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
Like everyone else, I don't really see the point to this place. It's this completely average, inoccuous little hole-in-the-wall Irish pub with beer and baseball. I came here because my gay best friend and his boyfriend broke up, and another friend of his was out with some guys, so we all met to get drunk and piss upon love. It was pretty empty for a Saturday night, so the service was fast. I didn't pay for anything, so I don't know how the prices fare. It was dark. There was a TV. The only remarkable aspect of the place was the utter lack of atmosphere. This is a bar that serves its purpose with absolutely no frills. It got the job done by a) existing and b) having alcohol. So there it is.
google avatar

Devon W.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place more than 3 stars, but there were a few bumps along the way. Pros: -Reasonably priced drinks ($5 Fireball shots!). -No minimum for credit cards. -Personable bartenders. -A lot of space for seating. Cons: -REALLY strong mixed drinks. Guess you get your money's worth, but I couldn't taste anything but the rum in my rum and coke. -Very college-age crowd. Personally, I was hoping more for a dive bar where I could catch up with a friend, but as the group of college-age girls at the bar kept screaming every five minutes, "c'est la vie!" -My friend and I dealt with some aggressive male customers. We ultimately left because one person kept trying to grab her, leaving us feeling uncomfortable. I'd think I would enjoy it more if I came midweek. Overall, I just wasn't feeling the vibe that night. The friendly bartenders at Bull McCabe's make me want to try this place again.
google avatar

Evelyn W.

Yelp
Typical college town dive bar. Prices are fairly reasonable. Great dark dank dive bar atmosphere. They have some games to play but the bartenders were always really busy and it can take a while to get your drink and/or check. I usually stop in here for a beer and to use the bathroom when I go to St. Mark's Place. It's a nice place to decompress after a day of shopping/eating when it isn't crowded.
google avatar

Liz C.

Yelp
The St. Marks place circus, currently boasting a couple of Japanese ramen bars, a couple of Japanese fro-yo bars, a Japanese cotton candy machine, an automat, a Mamoun's, and a few dozen places to buy furry hats, wouldn't be complete without its very own Irish pub. Enter Bull McCabe's, a hellish hole of a dive, serving up dingy, boring bee-yah to a faceless faction of lackluster stumble-ins. Two stars for the rent costs of an outdoor deck.
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
One of the best day drinking spots I have ever encountered. The price is right. The barkeep is on top of his game. They have all the right sports on the TVs, a pool table and great clientele. I will be back, Bull. Oh yes... I will be back.
google avatar

Maria M.

Yelp
It's a bar. They have drinks. It serves a purpose. However, I ordered a beer from the lady bartender with a newly empty glass in my hand, and still she carded me. Even though it was ridiculous, I smiled, because I like being carded. I wanted to slap down my ID and cry "Booo-Yaaaaaa!" The bathroom was not so bad, but then again, we were there on an early weeknight. The people working there don't look to be too into the cleanliness thing. I wanted a jukebox, and since there was a dartboard, a pool table, and various video games, I fully expected one. I was sorely disappointed. The beers offered were NOT GOOD. If I want to use the "drink something bad and you won't want another" strategy, Bull's will be my first stop.

Jamie R.

Yelp
I've been coming here for 3-4 years with various different friend groups. I just adore this place, and the staff has been very cool and chill. After this one incident, I told everyone not to come here along and had my friends who were with me that day to also let others know. Tried calling a manager after the incident but I guess the same dickhead answered and refused to put them on? Btw Mike, a co worker of yours gave us your name. Anyways, we came here one day to drink and first we went straight to the games on the far right corner. I put my dollar in and the skinny white employee, late 30s/ early 40's with shaggy hair starts telling my friends to leave. Told him we were ordering drinks but we're playing and he says "play your fucking game and then leave." We're not yuppies. We didn't play that game and fuck no we weren't leaving without the dollar that we put in. You lost like 20+ customers. In a lighter tone. I really did love this place. If the manager can reach out to me so we can discuss this experience, that would be cool. It's just that one really shitty bartender. The rest are dope chill ass people.

I'm gonna give this place the credit it deserves. Perhaps It holds a special place in my heart for giving me and my friend some love after we got turned away from Continental (I'm not sure I can work up enough unsolicited hatred to bring myself to properly write about that place) or maybe it was the drinks. We drank enough in 2 hours to get 86'ed from anywhere. Really. Anywhere. What do the bartenders here do? They give us complementary shots. Then more complementary shots. And then they do another round with us! I love you guys!
