The Best Restaurants and Food Carts Near Portland’s Laurelhurst Park | Eater Portland

"An eye-catching coat of turquoise blue paint distinguishes Bull Run Pizza from the rest of its neighbors on Northeast 28th’s buzzy restaurant row. This casual pizza joint originally started as a food cart favorite before converting into its current brick-and-mortar location in 2021. With more space to work with, Bull Run Pizza now slings 12-inch and 16-inch hand-tossed, thin-crust pies dressed up with a variety of topping options, from hot honey and Italian sausage to shishito peppers. Its off-the-menu grandma-style pizzas, available only by the slice, have become quite the hot commodity — pop in earlier to avoid the depressing sight of empty sheet pans."

The Best Restaurants on East 28th Avenue in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"The former Barley Pod food cart now operates as a full pizzeria on Northeast 28th, serving grandma-style slices and hand-tossed thin crust pies using a long, cold-fermented dough. Toppings include shaved Brussels sprouts, crimini mushrooms, and chèvre crumbles with roasted onion ranch dip. The Caesar salad breaks free of standard romaine vibes with radish, cotija, and toasted pepitas. Pro tip: Get your orders in early — this hotspot can see some long waits." - Thom Hilton

A Customer Left a $2,000 Tip for a Bargarten Server on Wednesday - Eater Portland

"Bull Run Pizza, the Barley Pod food cart topping sturdy-but-thin pies with things like ham, pineapple, and shishito peppers, will open a full-blown pizzeria by the end of the month. Bull Run, which had been using Hogan’s Goat as a commissary, started serving pies in 2019, using a long, cold-fermented dough; the pies range from pretty traditional marinara and pepperoni to elaborate creations with peppadew or shaved Brussels sprouts. The cart has temporarily closed, but will reopen in March; the restaurant will open at 108 NE 28th Avenue." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
they have a nice space with some inside seating and a great little patio out front for additional seating. They also are super friendly with fantastic service. I wish the applause didn’t stop there, but sadly it does…or did for me. The doing is lacking flavor, and for a thick square slice you need tasty dough. In a town that has more than a couple great Detroit style pizzerias, this one doesn’t hold its own to the competition.

Google
I have been all over the country and lived in Boston for years, and this is some of the best pizza I have encountered! The thick pan pizza was off the charts and reminded me of the pizza my 90 year old great Nana from Sicily made from scratch since I was a child…. AMAZING! Just the right dough, not too much sauce or cheese, and all the flavor. I can’t wait to come back for it!!!!

Google
The BEST pizza in Portland. I’m from Boston so it took me quite a few misses to find this dream of a place 😍 Bull run is fantastic every single time. I’ve never liked those square slices before (always been a classic girl🍕) but their square slices are TO DIE FOR. 11/10. Must try. Ranch is also SO GOOD

Google
One of my favorite pizza places ever, honestly. Thin crust, nice crispy edges, slightly blacken bottom, quality cheese (they sprinkle parmesan on top right before boxing up), and the small crispy pepperoni make it the best. Definitely recommend trying and the single slice thick crust is NOT a deep fry deep dish, they just proved it longer so it's air-y. Worth trying, but both are great! Inside the restaurant could be a bit more enticing to sit in, but outside has a few picnic benches! And plus, the staff are really nice and chill. They seem to be having a good time. Sorry my photos aren't great, I finish the pizza before I realize I should take photos lol Keep up the stellar work Bull Run! You deserve the 5-stars.

Google
We got lucky and noticed as we walked by that they are open for lunch on weekends during the summer! Get a yummy detroit style OR new york style slice (or both! or 3, like i did!) no need to wait til dinner. Good beer too (Ruse. Little beast, etc)

Google
My favorite neighborhood pizza spot, and def my top three pizza spots in Portland. I love the the crust/pizza styles of both the individual slices and the whole pies. This place is a must if you haven’t tried their za.

Google
Great little neighborhood pizza joint offering slices and craft beer. There is a bar and some seating inside, several tables outside. I got a couple of slices of pepperoni, which reminded me of a Detroit style pizza. The slices came out quick, I had to order my beer twice as the bartender forgot about it. Silverware, water and busing your dishes is self service.

Google
This is THE spot y'all 🍕🤠 There sure are a ton of amazing pizza options in this rad neighborhood! With that being said, I find myself walking right past them all to get this pizza! I'm always beyond impressed with everything I've ordered. I especially loved their whole grandmother style pizza, sooo tasty! Thanks for sharing your amazing food 😋 Everyone is super friendly and helpful as well, I highly recommend!

Yelp
Not sure how you can be out of a smaller size pizza, but still offer your large? ‍ That happened.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick slice of pepperoni. Was a real solid slice and had this nostalgic feeling of pizza I ate at the roller rink growing up in the best way possible. Def a tastier slice but did stir up these warm memories of being a kid again. Will return to try other pizzas.

Yelp
Update: still delicious! Even to go! I love their pizza. It's seasoned really well. The crust is one of the best around. I feel like they don't skimp on toppings either. The salad is always a nice addition. Thanks!

Yelp
Hipster all the way. Tattoo's and piercing hardwear are very welcomed , here. And they are open till 10:00 pm !! My large pepperoni was a 16" New York style. I swear, those were the most perfectly placed pepperoni's I have ever seen on a pizza. Some inspiring toppers to add (brussel sprouts) Super cool inside. Nice hang out for N.E. 28th area.

Yelp
Out of all the Pizza places... my husband wanted to go here! Glad we did!! Ranch is homemade so good. Pizza was cooked perfectly and we got this red sauce which was REALLLY GOOD! The restaurant itself is quaint inside it has a bar we ordered a beer and a cider. We'd order pizza from here!

Andy M.

Yelp
Pizza was good. It's always hard to tell with delivery, pizza boxes don't do good things to pizza. If I wasn't so hungry, I would do what I normally do and put it in a cast iron pan and heated it to bring back the texture. My one quibble would be with the mushrooms. I knew they were crimini because it said so on the menu. I questioned it before I ordered and I was right. File it under "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." The flavor and texture are too strong, use white mushrooms. I ordered the Caesar salad too. By definition, a Caesar salad is made with romaine lettuce. Period. If it's not made with romaine and romaine only, it's not a Caesar. Call it something else.

Yelp
Bull Run serves up a square slice that's truly a bull's-eye! The dough is a masterpiece, achieving the perfect balance of chewiness and crispiness. With each bite, I felt like I hit the jackpot. It's a slice that's as impressive as a bull charging full tilt. If you're seeking a pizza experience that's both daring and delicious, look no further than Bull Run. It's a stampede of flavor that'll have you coming back for more. This place has definitely run away with my heart--and my taste buds!! :)

Yelp
Great pizza was suppose to meet my family visiting form California at Kevin's Artesian Pizza but their was a 2hour wait. I'm glad we went here instead they were we a little busy took like 30 minutes to get our pizza . And it was worth the wait . We had A simple.pizza just pepperoni. But the pizza itself was very good. We will definitely be going back thier

Larry R.

Yelp
Great Margaritha Pizza. Lots of Basil. Hours Parking are not so good, though I found a spot just a few blocks away. Traffic was bad too, unless you want to wait until after rush hour or live close by. Will be going here when the timing is right.

Yelp
I just moved to the west coast and have been missing my beloved new york pizza and holy shit this place blew me away. Everything about our experience was amazing. The pizza was so delicious and we tried some of their unique pies and they were all delicious as well! The interior was quite nice and the staff were all super helpful as well. Wouldn't be surprised if i made a trip down to Portland just for this pizza !

Yelp
Wife picked this spot a couple of weeks ago for her birthday, and it was a good one! Homemade ranch was addictive, and the pizza was FIRE - plus, that red sauce was so good. The place is cozy with a cool bar; we even grabbed a beer and cider. Service was good to us. Definitely coming back soon!

Yelp
I'd been meaning to check this spot out ever since I walked by it. The perfect pizza parlor atmosphere, my friend and I stopped by to split a pizza. We ordered the Benji (and added Italian sausage) at the recommendation of our server. They were right, the hot honey drizzled on top is phenomenal. Personally my favorite part of the pizza were the sweet peppadew, so flavorful. As soon as the pizza arrived to the table, I could already tell how good it was going to be. I honestly haven't stopped thinking about that pizza since I had it, and have raved about it to anyone that will listen. I'll 100% be going back & trying more menu items. I loved the laidback but tasteful vibe of the place and its location of 28th ave makes it all the more perfect. Can't recommend ordering the Benji enough--so good.

Yelp
This food is amazing and it's in a really cute area. We shared the Caesar Salad (very, very delicious), and had some slices of cheese and pepperoni pizza which were perfect. The pies also look really good, next time we'll get those as well. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty great take out pizza! Crust is light, toppings were of good quality. Staff was super friendly. This may fast become a new go-to for Sunday night pizza nights!

Yelp
Was looking for a new pizza spot over the weekend when I came across Bull Run Pizza. I have to admit, I hadn't even heard of this spot before... but once I looked at the menu, I knew I had to go try it. My boyfriend and I went around 1pm on a Saturday. We ordered a couple drinks, then got a pepperoni pizza with jalapenos, hot honey, and extra cheese. We also got an order of their cheezy bread with all four dipping sauces (they all sounded so good, I couldn't just pick one!) Everything was AMAZING! By far the best cheezy bread I have ever had and the pizza was out of this world. They add white sauce to their cheezy bread and garlic two ways... confit and fresh! Everything about it was just perfect. It easily became one of my top favorite pizza places in Portland. Pro tip: don't sleep on their fancy sauce. It was a flavor explosion and SO good!

Yelp
Delicious square pizza with thick yet light crust. Really good topping options. Nice atmosphere at the restaurant. All-around awesome.

Yelp
Bull Run Pizza is easy to miss, tucked away on a corner without any flashy signs or notifications about its name. They simply have two benches out front with a paper sign attached to their front doors with the menu- a crime really because this place is AMAZING. The pizza was one of the best I've had, and for the size to price ratio, it made it even that much more enjoyable to know I wasn't going broke while eating it (hint hint to all the other pizza places I'm fond of but my wallet isn't). They were able to accommodate us by doing half/half and the food was ready promptly. I wouldn't say it's the most lovely spot to take a date or sit to enjoy a weekend night out. It's a bit run down and lacks ambience. Sad because their food lacks nothing.

Yelp
In my opinion this is the best pizza in the Laurelhurst area. Yes even better then Kens Artisan Pizza. I've had many others in the area and this is the best pizza by far. My family and I order this pizza for pick up every other week because of how amazing it is. Also the Caesar salad is amazing too. Bull Run Pizza is new to the area and absolutely a must try

Yelp
I ordered takeout from Bull Run Pizza. I got the Caesar salad and 12 inch margarita. They were both delicious, ready on time and served by very kind people. Highly recommend.!

Annabelle M.

Yelp
Great pizza with a perfected crust! Always love the option to buy just a slice. Had a nice time sitting at a table reading a book between bites and enjoying a coke from an old fashioned bottle.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
We were visiting our son in Portland and we wanted THE BEST PIZZA in the city. We googled just that and then tried to go to Ken's Artisan Pizza. WELL. I am not the kind of person who will wait for 2 hours to get a table, so we tried google again. Bull Run Pizza was within walking distance AND had an even higher rating than Ken's! We walked a few blocks and then proceeded to enjoy the most delicious pizza we have ever eaten! And the Caesar Salad was outstanding. (Pepitas!! Who knew?) We commandeered our table for HOURS while playing the game "If you could only listen to 50 songs for the rest of your life, which would you choose?" Nobody rushed us out, even after they had closed the doors for the night. We will definitely be back to visit our son and we won't even bother stopping at Ken's Artisan Pizza first. Bull Run Pizza is the real frickin deal!!! (And I am a pizza snob, so I know.)
google avatar

Issy D.

Yelp
SO SO SOOOO GOOD. Every time. The staff is always so friendly and appreciative of business. It's our first choice for pizza in the area. Our common customized order: sausage OR pepperoni; garlic confit, hot honey, ricotta. PLEASE give this place your business! I will be devastated if they ever

Angela C.

Yelp
My friends and I are visiting from Seattle, were craving pizza, and stopped by after seeing that they had minimal waiting. The pizza was delicious!! We had the Benji and Emma. Both were very good but the Benji was the group's favorite...the ricotta, pickled pepper, kale, and hot honey was such a great combination. I also had the Little Beast hazy IPA and it was a good beer, not too hoppy! I will be thinking about this place after we leave Portland!..
google avatar

Andy B.

Yelp
Superb in every way. Nice quite venue and excellent pizza on a fermented crust. Lots of topping and great selection. Fabulous Caesar Salad. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Ronald A.

Yelp
This is a first, a five star rating for pizza. However, our experience was wonderful. Crust: excellent flavor, not too thin or thick, brown on the bottom, no char. What else can you ask for? The red sauce added body. Just enough cheese. Small sliced pieces of pepperoni., not too spicy and not bland. Just enough on the pie. Cooked just enough and given to me out of the oven. Warm. Not sure how this pizza could have been better, Excellent salad. Loved the dressing. So much better than the tired Caesar salad we too often get with take out. Our experience. One of the best pepperoni pizza's ever. Triple yum. Give it a try.
google avatar

Cindy I.

Yelp
It was a solid pizza. I liked that the crust wasn't tough but also not soggy, just right. Not much flavor to it but that is okay. I do wish the sauce had a bit more interest. I don't mean heat just a little more spicing for flavor. The toppings seemed good quality. Overall a good pizza and nice staff when I picked it up.

Joe K.

Yelp
Came here for the first time and loved the pizza! We had called another local spot (Ken's) a few times and they decided not to pick up so we broadened our horizons and tried this new spot and were very happy we did! Great pizza. Crisp crust, amazing sauce, excellent cheese, and all fresh ingredients. At one point, one of the employees came out and offered to buy a round of drinks for a couple customers who they had forgotten to take mushrooms off of their pizza (or some little mistake like that). Clearly this place has good food, but the customer service is also clearly outstanding. 100% would recommend. *Margarita pizza below*

Fairy S.

Yelp
AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS! I know Portland is a pizza town but this New Yorker hasn't been impressed with most spots here. I finally got around to trying this place, and it was amazing! This pizza is SO TASTY. When my husband and I took our first bite we both said, "WOW!" The crust was somehow but crispy and chewy at the same time. The sauce was super flavorful and the fresh basil was perfect. They have a cold fermented crust which is easier for people who are gluten free. Also, the staff was super friendly. I finally found my favorite pizza spot in Portland!

Daniel M.

Yelp
The picture speaks for itself, but I'll elaborate. This is a New York-ish pie spot. Not too thick, not too thin. The pies are curiously perfect looking looking, charred just right, and almost zero sag even without folding. The sausage needs some love; more salt and some fennel would really send this pie into the yes yes yes zone. Overall, best NY-ish pie in Portland hands down. If they offered an 18-20" pie and did slices, this would be a spot-on NY vibe through and through. I'm gonna go straight pepperoni next time before delving into their weirdo pies and I'll be here weekly until I've tried every combination. So damn good. Don't sleep on this one, get it asap.
google avatar

Andrew J.

Yelp
They got homemade ranch who the fuck does that five stars Everything else was good too
google avatar

Cookie C.

Yelp
This is great pizza! Crispy, crunchy, chewy crust, inventive flavors. The combination of shaved Brussels sprouts, bacon, and mushrooms was irresistible. The margherita pizza was yummy. Give this place a try -- you won't be sorry!
google avatar

Maro S.

Yelp
Another really good pizza place to add to the arsenal! We got the Caesar salad, a Pepperoni, and a Bruscular -- all very tasty! Good crust, quality sauce and toppings. I'd like to see more pre-created pizza options, but they have loads of interesting toppings. Can't wait to try more!

Lynn L.

Yelp
The dough is so special here. Extra yeasty, and texturally incredible. Also, the topping distribution is so balanced. If pizza could be a bonsai tree, this is it. It's our favorite pizza place in Portland - it doesn't get enough flowers! Support them and their blessed dough! You won't regret it.
google avatar

Niki I.

Yelp
We just tried this tonight! Bull Run Pizza was so yummy. The crust was perfect and flavor was on point. The place is so cute inside. My hubby and I are going to sneak away to have a beer next time!

Aaron S.

Yelp
Holy hell. Favorite new pizza (full pies) in Portland. Keep crushing it over there!!
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
Very good pizzz! Been here 3 times this month? Caesar salad is great too!
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
We got the kale, pepper and ricotta pizza and the Brussel sprout pizza, both with white sauce. They were both solid and good. The staff was very friendly as well! I would recommend this spot if you are craving pizza.
google avatar

Noah T.

Yelp
Well shoot, I live nearby and have been putting off trying this place but now that I have gotten a few slices tonight I will be a regular. Arguably the best slice I have ever gotten in portland, so I'm stoked to get a pie next time. Good vibes, good people, good location, worth your bucks.
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
Just a fantastic pizza joint, I live in NE and it is by far the best pizza around. Would recommend to anybody to check it out
google avatar

Izzie M.

Yelp
This pizza place was bomb! Decided last minute to grab some pizza and this place hit the spot. They're vegan pizza was so delicious and the price was just right! They had cute seating outside and it made the atmosphere very nice!
google avatar

Jason U.

Yelp
I was curious about who was moving in when I saw the building being painted bright blue... happy to see it was pizza (seems to be an Italian theme on that stretch of 28th these days). We tried the Benji and the cheezy garlic bread. They were both thinner crust, which I prefer and thought was cooked well, not burnt or crunchy. The Benji had honey on it which is a first for me, and I was amazed at how well the flavors blended. Tip: if you're a heavy dipper get 2 dipping sauces for the cheezy bread, only tried the fancy sauce and ran out. Best new pizza place we've found in the last year. We will be going back!

Raul C.

Yelp
My fiancé and I saw this on yelp and decided to make the 30 minute drive to try out their pizzas. I tell that they did not disappoint! I personally love Hawaiian pizza but their "Locals Only" pizza was out of this world! So was the "Margarita Pizza"! The staff was great, very friendly, and just tied the ambience together very nicely! I hope to be back soon!
google avatar

Colman C.

Yelp
Pizza was really good and priced very reasonably. Got a small Caesar and small "Bruscular" pizza for around $22 pre tip. Caesar was a notch above our other favorite pizza places caesars. Definitely enough to feed 2, maybe 3 if you're appetite isn't as large as ours. Had a order/pickup window with a couple picnic tables on the sidewalk. Will definitely return soon and recommend to others!
google avatar

B C.

Yelp
Best pizza in town! Bull Run is my new place. It taste great and isn't greasy. We ordered three pizzas and picked them up at the window. ( not a drive thru). Good service and very reasonable prices.
google avatar

Erik G.

Yelp
Stopped in tonight for the first time. Tried the Margherite Pizza and it was delicious! A classic you can judge a pizza joint on and they hit it out of the park. Excited to try more from Bull Run Pizza. Paired it with a nice lager and could not have been happier.

Jayden K.

Yelp
The pizza was okay, we got the pepperoni and local's only. But, the staff was really weird and rude to us right from the get go. We ordered a salad as well but they forgot that and when we went to ask for it they gaslit us into thinking we didn't mention it. I usually aid on the side of kindness with people in the food industry because people can be really mean, but this made our dining experience very awkward and bitter. I also asked for a ranch but then they neglected to tell me I had to pay for it until after they brought it out. They were nice to everyone else but me and my boyfriend, so we will be looking elsewhere for a good pizza spot in our neighborhood.

Angie M.

Yelp
It's not easy to replicate NYC pizza but Bulll Run is as close as I've had since leaving NY 30 years ago. This place gets an A+. I'll definitely be back.

Ron E.

Yelp
This crust is one of the best around. Puffy, light and crusty. Thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it.

Catherine M.

Yelp
Delicious pizza and quick turn around. Their creative take on the Caesar salad is delicious and we always get the dessert pizza. Highly recommend this hidden treasure!

Lorrie S.

Yelp
Best pizza! We were there for dinner on Friday evening. The pizzas (we had 2 different ones) and the garlic cheese bread were all fantastic! Great service, very friendly! I'd say forget any other pizza place in town.
