The Best Burritos in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"At its two locations, Azteca boasts one of the largest selections of burritos in town, including multiple vegetarian options. While the namesake burrito here is a familiar chile relleno burrito with protein, the real gem is the Surfin’ California, stuffed with shrimp, asada, fries, and guacamole." - Janey Wong

Very fun space, delicious food, a spicy margarita I will be back for! Food was quick and well made, salsa selection was just right. We'll be back.

Google
Great food quick service. Highly recommend we used to come here 23 years ago when we lived in their neighborhood and it’s still a great spot. Cool bar next-door. The fish burrito and the shrimp and Carne Asada burrito were both amazing.

Google
I Ordered an Amazing Potato Burrito and It was Delicious!!!! The Service is Soectacular, the People here are Very Welcoming Clean Atmosphere Fresh Food Loved It!!! I wish I coulda posted a picture of the Burrito but I ate it before giving this review. So next time I’ll post😁

Google
Easily one of the best Mexican food spots in the area. If you have time to dine in, try one of the bar specials they have: usually a burrito+drink+chips. The business hours also run from morning to relatively late so a good place to grab any meal of the day. It's also a good place to stop at if you bike to or from St John's on Rosa Parks, but the large bike corral isn't there anymore.

Google
This place is a wonderful local restaurant with extremely friendly staff! They have apartments on the second level and my father-in-law lives in one and they’re always great people. I tried the shrimp burrito last time I went and you get a GIANT sized burrito for less than 8 bucks, with all quality ingredients. This is worth the stop and when I have friends or family in town, I take them here!! Great sauces, friendly service, food is delicious, they never disappoint.

Google
They serve the food on paper plates was Luke warn at best, was not impressed 😒! Most of us spent the rest of the day on the shitter, food poisoning! Unacceptable do not go here 😒

Google
I always come to this little spot because they have the sweetest people and the best tasting Mexican food in the block. They have a clean space to eat inside and also a few spots on the outside to enjoy the breeze in the evening. The roasted salsa always hits the spot and the green for those who can't handle a little spice 😜. Thank you everyone for making food with love. I can't wait to see you all again 🙏 P.s. did I forget about their bumping traditional music? Be eclectic. Learn culture. Listen to poetry. Fernanda you're awesome 🙏.

Upon arriving the young gal at the register seemed to not have a ton of knowledge on the menu… while looking to see what myself and a friend wanted to order she made it very clear she was “ready” for us to order. We were handed a buzzer for when our Togo order would be ready, when our order was ready she kindly brought to our table. My hands were full and she demanded the buzzer as though we weren’t going to return, all while I was just trying to free up my hands. The bag was stapled close and I asked if we could have some salsa.. she claimed she put it in the bag. I got home to the tiniest two containers of RED salsa. She was extremely rude and after spending $30 dollars I didn’t think asking for salsa would be a big deal. Personally wanted to ask for green salsa but she made it very apparent she could not be bothered.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite place to get burritos. The service is great and their lengua burrito is THE BEST!!!

Yelp
Ordered a late dinner after a day of travel, love that this place is open late! One of the chicken best burritos I've had in years, extremely flavorful and satisfying. Horchata was good, not too sweet and plenty of cinnamon. Tacos, chips and guacamole were also very good.

Jan W.

Yelp
Wow this was surprising! I had the special. Didn't take a pic I was too hungry but will next time. And there will be many more next times. It was massive and full of meat and toppings. It also comes with chips and salsa plus two beers. I had just driven in from Denver and was shaking from not eating. Give it a try. It has parking too!Fast service too! Jan

Yelp
The taco here was yummy and different flavors to choose from the menu. The store was busy so we got to order some food for takeout. They gave us a beeper for waiting to get our food ready. The staffs were talking in their language so the food should be authentic and they were really good to enjoy different foods here.

Yelp
Nothing wrong with some good tacos & burritos! My daughter just moved a couple blocks away and we've eaten here a few times. Always good. I'm not a fan of the green salsa, but that's me. Red salsa is delish! My last visit I just grabbed a couple tacos - carnitas & chili relleno for $7, thank you very much!

Yelp
I ordered online. I ordered a quesabirria and I don't even know how to explain what I got but here's the pictures. I asked for no onions and got onions. And there's no cheese. Forgot the consume too. I don't have a picture of the beans and cheese but you'd be better off making your own sides.

Yelp
Sad to say this place has gone very downhill, we ordered to go, California burrito was missing guacamole, we had 3 different types of tacos, all were far too greasy but the Al pastor tacos were oily and greasy to an unacceptable level to the point that my boyfriend was sick overnight with a stomach ache from them. Not cool and especially not for the price.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food . I was here visiting from L.A . We found Azteca after a long day and was pleasantly surprised to find it open. Enjoyed the carne asada burro and chicken quesadilla . There's a small patio and dinning area inside . Give it a try if you love good south of the border cooking .

Mike M.

Yelp
Everything I've had from el burrito Azteca has been great, service is quick, food is hot, and deliveries speedy, the salsa and chips are the best

Yelp
Best burrito in north Portland- reminds me of my favorite SoCal stands. Super clean inside; maybe the music is a little loud, but... I'm old.

Yelp
I visited El Burrito Azteca a few weeks ago for the first time. I'm enjoying trying Mexican restaurants in Portland and I'm happy to note that I enjoyed my visit and burrito at this restaurant. This restaurant is in the Portland Eater Article which features 14 big burritos in Portland. The burrito that is highlighted is the Surfin California which includes guacamole, shrimp, asada, and fries. It's not my usual order but I enjoyed the burrito and the two salsas available to put on it. The horchata was good. The service was good as well. Overall, it's a great taqueria to visit if you are close by.

Yelp
Super solid choice for local Mexican flavors my only complaint was they forgot our chips and salsa with our to-go order so alas we did without. We ordered some ground beef tacos, chimichanga plate, and a bean and rice burrito. They gave us ample amount of sauces just missing that order of chips and salsa. Everything tastes fresh and the portions are pretty big. I really enjoyed my bean and rice burrito. By the time we arrived, ordered, and left with our food there ended up being a pretty large crowd dining in, so it looks like this place gets packed, which is great! The ordering process is really straightforward, you walk-in, order at the counter, your receipt has a number, they call your number and voila.

Yelp
I was thrown off by how small the burritos looked at first but didn't realize how Thick they really are. Added some Shrimp and sweet mercy that was good. Tastes like some good SOCAL burrito you'd get by the ocean. Keep it up

Yelp
Just the most nasty, inept and gross employees in the area. Every question answered with arrogance and indifference, if they even acknowledge you at all. Food is mediocre and takes forever to get. But, whatever, I'd still eat here again if it wasn't for the terrible service. No stars.

Yelp
I love this burrito place!!! Not only is the food fantastic but the service has always been top notch. Today I came in for the first time in four years because I moved across town and am no longer close by and the bartender still remembered my partner and I. Come for the rellenos, stay for the service and tequila.

Louie D.

Yelp
Not amazing....I ordered a California burrito and they forgot the guacamole. Asada fries tasted frozen and meat was rubber. Would not recommend.

Yelp
We found this spot through a friend. An easy go to delivery meal for us! So far in Portland, 1st place I'd order Mexican from. We've tried a lot since moving here a few months ago. Burritos are very big, chips and salsa are delicious! Horchata is good but a little on the chalky side, still yummy. We've ordered 3 times. Oh and the green salsa for the burritos! Yummy!!

Brianna M.

Yelp
great burritos. reallly tasty. super yum. would eat again. thanks for the burrito I appreciate it.

Yelp
Great food! DO NOT ORDER TAKEOUT ONLINE!! Online super burrito = $16.04 In person/phone call = $11.75 I cannot believe the markup without direct communication Will return, reminder food is Great here!

Johnaishia L.

Yelp
I love this place it never miss. One of the best Mexican food spots in NE/N. But one thing about them they gone mess yo order up, so check before leaving.

Stefanee C.

Yelp
Don't come here I live close by so I stop every few months. Each time I receive bad attitude from staff. I shrug it off, but this time I order a burrito and it's sitting getting cold. So I politely ask if there's something to be done. They say it's my fault for ordering it to go. Then I ask if maybe I can get a Jamaica for my troubles and I get told in even more detail of how it's not their problem. So rude. The girl at the front was kind at delivering the words but the manager just hid in the back. Also I was charged and ordered shredded beef on my quesadilla and there was no meat in question. So anywho if you wanna go somewhere where you are not cared for and get ripped up off then come here. You've found your place. If not there are dozens of delicious Mexican restaurants with kind staff within the area.

Yelp
It was Good Friday for a lot of Catholics so we decided to go here for fish tacos! The ambiance and food was great! Never went to a place like this in a while.

Jasmine P.

Yelp
This place is the best. Great prices, good portions, and the best service ever. The #3 special hits the spot. After not coming in for a few years because we moved, we popped in and were immediately remembered. so glad to see our friends again!

Ea G.

Yelp
The atmosphere makes you feel at ease and the people are justnthe same. Definitely a good place to try

J R.

Yelp
Good tasty food and quick service. Prices have dramatically increased, but that's everywhere these days. No frills, casual atmosphere here. Order at the counter and pick-up from the counter. Take your dog and sit outside, or sit inside. You can also sit in the bar section if you don't have any minors in your group. I did not see the three "bar specials" written on the plastic sneeze guard until I was sitting down and eating. Option #1 was $14.50 for 1 beer, 1 burrito and chips & salsa. That's a good deal considering the burrito alone is $10.50-12.00.

Jesse M.

Yelp
Unfortunately the food quality has gone down the past few years. Ive been going here for over 8 years and always had amazing food and very good service. It used to be quite well prepared with great service. There is a new young guy working the bar area now who is very poorly trained or just isn't a good fit for him. Every time I have ordered with him he has yet to get my order correct. That goes for the people around me aswell. Ive watched customers walk out for his lack of acknowledgment to them and having to ask the customers multiple times what they ordered and once there order comes having to make multiple changes for things he failed to do initially causing a back up and people waiting. If you happen to go on the right day with one of the long time servers and one of the still good cooks you'll still enjoy it hopefully. Other than that it's pretty hit or miss especially if you get this new young guy for service.

Emma B.

Yelp
I love this place!!! A staple in the north Portland/university park community!! Amazing deals and even more amazing food and people. I love the bar specials they offer and have never been disappointed by the quality of the food. Genuinely one of the few authentic Mexican places I have liked in Portland.

Devry S.

Yelp
I love this place I come here often, unfortunately, every time I come here I don't get guacamole on my California burrito and I'm starting to get a little bit sad about it. I ordered extra guacamole this time so that I would definitely get it and I didn't. :( really love this place I want to keep coming back, but I'm sad for paying for something I'm not getting
google avatar

Kimberly D.

Yelp
Perfect little place to stop on your way to Seattle for a California burrito . I tried a taco salad there, but underwhelming. I think not exactly authentic Mexican dish, so I will go back to ordering the California burrito as they have so many choices of styles and I like vegetarian style.

Jimmy T.

Yelp
Great food. Online it's more expensive. I've added the prices as of 2/10/2023. Great bar to wait in if you walk in but if you've called it in they're fast. If the say 15 minutes not a bad idea to be there in 10. Enjoy!!

Vivian V.

Yelp
the food was exceptional. Greta service, friendly prices and super affordable. would highly recommend coming back!

Yelp
Two times in a row extremely disappointed with my experience with this place. First time was a delivery in which they forgot an item and I had to drive and get it. They refused to make it right and send me the burrito they had forgotten. The second time I ordered on their website for a delivery. I called them to see when it would arrive and they said they don't deliver. Again I had to drive there because of their mistake. When I arrived they had charged me $10 for a delivery that they didn't do. They blamed the app(on their website) and offered no refund. The burritos are not worth the trouble.

Cupcake M.

Yelp
I have enjoyed El Burrito Azteca for years, going back wo when it was El Burrito Loco. But my most recent visit was visit was awful. I was double charged and when I went to the restaurant to as for a refund, I was told that it was impossible to for this to happen. I presented the bank statement with the double charge. The woman told me she would talk to the manager and get back to me. 24 hours later I called back and was told again that it's impossible for me to be double charged. I started to argue with the woman on the phone and she told me she would send me proof but then hung up on me and blocked my call. The manager never called me back and there was no apology for the mistake. I have the receipt and the back statement to prove the double charge, but they refused to believe it happened. It was not a lot of money and being gracious would have gone a long way. But their refusal to even call me back makes me think they really do not care about customer service. I used to love this place, but the food has gone downhill and with this most recent lack of customer service I feel the need to never return to this place.

Carl A.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in town for sure! The services was fast and friendly the also have a nice bar the ambience is really cool!

Carl M.

Yelp
They double charged my debit card for my order, then argued with me about it, and did not give me a refund. They claimed the charge was pending and it would drop off. It didn't. Dont go here, unless you support sleazy crooks.

Yelp
As far as delivery tacos go, this is one of the best places I've found in NE Portland. I can highly recommend the carnitas, chicken, vegetarian, and fish tacos. On top of this, their salsas are incredible and never forget the side of fried chilies they offer for 95 cents if you like spice. Total game changer.
google avatar

Jerald S.

Yelp
The worst tacos ever. Dry, flavorless, lackef any seasoning, overcoooked. The Chile Rellono were excellent, and the Potter taqciuotos were amazing.
google avatar

Corinne R.

Yelp
Josie brought me here after a sauna/soak in Vancouver. I was v hungry so I devoured it, but the Al pastor was salty and not as sweet as I'd hoped. Pretty decent, and juicy, not my fav burrito though
google avatar

Damaris M.

Yelp
Consistently delicious and open late because it has a bar!!!!! they were open on Christmas Eve during the ice storm too which was insanely clutch My go to is an Al pastor burrito and a margarita :) but really you cannot go wrong with anything Really good guacamole (even tho it's $7 which makes me sad but it's worth it tbh)
google avatar

Yelp
I've been craving burritos lately. Breakfast burritos and shrimp burritos. My favorite burrito joint Los Gorditos doesn't have an option to customize your order on Grubhub so I cheated on them with El Burrito Azteca. Their shrimp burrito is probably better than Los Gorditos. They put more shrimp in the burrito and it's just as huge. Plus ordering it to my specifications was way easy. The price is only slightly higher but well worth it. Delivery was super fast too. If you haven't tried them yet, I totally recommend El Burrito Azteca. 2021 - Review #2

Mario H.

Yelp
Delicious desebrada/shredded beef Azteca plate - well seasoned and good price point. Fantastic salsas.

Griffin M.

Yelp
Great place for lunch! Never too long of a wait, and the music pairs nicely with the food. I usually get the California asada burrito.

Max M.

Yelp
This place is decent. I dig the bar and combo deals. Decent prices. But someone needs to explain to these dudes that carne asada is not stewed. It's literally in the name.
google avatar

Nini S.

Yelp
It's alright, it's open late. But it's not very authentic or high quality. I live in Texas and I'm Used to good Mexican food. They didn't even have chips and queso either. No queso anywhere.
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
Best Burritos in Portland. My son found this restaurant shortly after getting to school in N Portland. We make it a point to eat here with him every visit now or send him meals from here ( covid times) They never disappoint. Great food, great staff, great prices. Thanks for keeping our boy nourished Azteca!

Reuben M.

Yelp
Some of the best burritos and tacos in Portland. Good portion sizes for the price, amazing flavor and all around a great experience.

Katiyun T.

Yelp
love the food and the se was excellent definitely would be coming back I got the shrimp burritos full of flavor would definitely eat hear agin

Jeffrey W.

Yelp
One of the greatest mysteries in Portland is how and why this place is so busy. I'm 0-4 in my attempts to have a good experience here. First off, the food is not great. It's decent. It's average. It can be fast if they don't screw up your order or ignore you. The service is the absolute worst.

Sophie L.

Yelp
Food was soggy and my cheese wasn't even melted on my quesadilla. The carne asada is ground beef so they should really change that to carne picada... tacos were also very soggy. Food was just honestly bad, I think getting 7/11 tacos would have been more appetizing than this meal. Now if you care about having good service, do not come here. They take forever to take your order and then continuously mess up but blame you for it. And I am talking about you two ladies that helped refund the order you messed up on! Actually really don't come here at all, I can promise you there's better places around the neighborhood that have better food at competing prices. If you want quality food and service you will not find it here.
