Yelp
I have had BBC as both takeout and now catering. The takeout order was about two years ago. Everything was delicious and well-seasoned but no complaints.
Based upon that, I thought to use them to complete my holiday meal plans. It was my first time hosting. I ain't gonna lie, the bird intimidates me. I got the sides all day but did not want to risk the main dish on an amateur mistake.
So, I tried BBC's catering options.
First red flag - the website would only allow me to choose one date for pickup. After a few calls and a visit to the restaurant, I was able to place my order. I had to type my delivery date into the comments. Duh! (in case you missed my sarcasm, this is pure bafoonery. Who builds a site like that!?!?!)
2nd red flag - Well, maybe this was a caution flag. I received a confirmation email. Then, sometime later, a cancelation email. Quick phone got that sorted out. I even confirmed my order and pickup time.
3rd red flag, aka The Beginning of the End. As I was busy with prep, I sent my brother to pick up our order an hour before the scheduled time. Upon arrival, he finds other customers who had been waiting for HOURS on their orders. He is told to come back at 7 PM. He does, and the place is closing down. There's like 2-3 staff left. Lady greets him with, "Baby, we don't have your food."
That's right, no turkey. They did give him the gravy and potato salad we ordered.
BBC knew when we first came that they had accepted payments for more orders than they either planned to or could purchase and/or prepare/cook. They knew there was no chance we were getting a bird from them. They were just setting our dinner up for failure.
Later that evening, the owner or catering lead called and apologized. She offered a full refund (received) and a full Christmas dinner on them (ain't no way I'd fall for that twice).
After this experience, I came back to Yelp to see what others had posted. Come to find out, they've been pulling this stunt for YEARS. Those reviews are visible by searching for "catering."
Basic math is key to successful catering. If you sell X turkeys, you need to purchase, prep, and cook X + 10% of X.
BBC should not offer catering. Period.
They've certainly lost a customer in me and my circle of influence.
