19 Restaurants in New York That’ll Fulfill Any Bacon Craving | Eater

"David White opened this casual steakhouse in 1975 and it has remained family-owned ever since. Known for its steaks and seafood, the Butcher Block also has an extensive burger menu, all of which come with fries and the soup, salad, and bread bar. If you’re hankering for some bacon, check out the “vermonster” with apple slices, cheddar, bacon, and maple aioli; the “bacon horseradish” with bacon, cheddar, and horseradish sauce; the “adirondack” with candied bacon, onion rings, sharp cheddar, and maple barbecue sauce; or the “black & blue” that’s made with Cajun spices and topped with cob smoked bacon, caramelized onions, and housemade blue cheese dressing." - devorahlevtov

Great service that was friendly and attentive at the right times. Burgers were excellent and cooked perfectly. I got the surf and turf burger which I would definitely get again with the chunks of lobster and Boursin sauce. Yeah it was messy, but so delicious. The French fries were fantastic. The soup, salad, bread bar is an enjoyable add on or if you’re inclined you can get it as a stand alone meal. I love the ambiance here and multiple seating options. They are closed on Sundays.

Literally what is this. The fact that a chef put this on a plate is complete and utter gobbledygook. The meat was basically still grazing on the field when I bit into this burger. I did not realize the full extent until I brought it home. It looks like someone put it on a grille for 30 seconds and called it a day. What kind of establishment hires chefs that can’t even cook a burger? I enjoy a somewhat rare burger but there was no part of this that was cooked other than the outter skin. Butcher block, you better hope I don’t get food poisoning.

Went there on Friday for happy hour and the service was great, the food wasn't. Ordered the mussels and they were barely opened when they were served. Ordered a bowl of soup and that was not bad. Because of the service we decided to try again the next night for dinner. Once again the soup was the highlight of the meal. Ordered escargot for an appetizer and it was just smothered in garlic and butter. For my meal I ordered prime rib with baked potato. Everything was barely warm and the prime rib was over cooked and didn't have much flavor. We had 2 server's, one male and one female. The male was great but the female had no personality and was really cold.

Google
What a nice place to go. The barn is beautiful. The interior decor is really nice. The atmosphere is great. The food was excellent but the fries were a bit cold. We had good service but we were perplexed when we asked to change seats (I was getting too much air conditioning behind me) the waitress told us ok anyway we split the tip. It's really inappropriate I think to tell us that randomly. but other than that, I recommend it without hesitation Funny fact, you can play live lottery 🤩🤑🤠

We ate here with a party of 5. We arrived during early enough for Happy Hour and just in time for Prime Rib. We had an excellent time! Our server's name was Riley and she took excellent care of us! She made sure we had everything we needed! Prime Rib, Stuffed Haddock, Rack of Ribs and Filet for the win! Everything was amazing!

Google
Edit 7/13: had a great steak. Seems to be my go to now. Fries are good too. Had the bone in prime rib. Garlic and herb butter is something else. Been here a few times. Standard franchise steak place. Nothing really interesting to say. Its food, its fairly quick. Its hot

Google
The food is AMAZING the only problem is that the waiter was running around and taking a bit to long but other than that it was good.

Google
It was very busy the evening I was there so it was very loud and a bit cramped. Even though it was busy the service was still very fast and there were plenty of servers on hand to manage the customers. Our server was friendly and attentive and the salad bar was nice and our food portions were more than adequate. My prime rib and shrimp were cooked how I asked and tasted well. My wife's fillet mignon was a generous cut and well cooked. It taste well but she said she has had others that were more flavorful. Overall good eats. If you are looking for a quiet dinner this is not the place but if you want good food with generous portions and attentive service this is a great place to go.

Yelp
i wouldn't get the salad bar as it's handled in an unsanitary way but the food is great. you can sit in the bar area and play lotto games if you're into that.

Yelp
Stopped at Butcher Block after finding out our plane out of the airport was delayed a couple hours. Ate at the bar area as the line was already out the door for tables. It was happy hour and the specials must have been good as the place was packed, loud, and there was a constant stream of wait staff going through. The soup and salad bar is excellent - I highly recommend it. Beers 2 for 1 during happy hour. Great service, hope to be back real soon.

Marita R.

Yelp
4 of us went for the early bird specials. Two had prime rib and two had stuffed haddock. The portions were huge and coupled with soup and salad bar were well worth the visit. Definitely the next time I'm in the area this will be a stop!

Sue M.

Yelp
So far our favorite since moving to the area. The salad bar was great and kept up well. The food was excellent. We debated getting the ribs as sauce can make or break by individual taste preferences so decided to try another dish. I had a steak and it was perfectly cooked and flavored. The wait team was funny and so great they even brought us a small sample of the rib sauce we could try for next time. Our booth was cute and pretty private. Loved the ambiance. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I've been here before, for happy hour and appetizers and flatbreads and it was enjoyable. Based on that, I brought an out of town friend for dinner. What a disappointment. I had the spinach and artichoke ravioli which is a casserole dish filled with a soupy sauce that had chunks of artichoke and two pieces of spinach smothering basic storebought ravioli. Not At all as described, and ridiculously priced at 24.99. My friend had the stuffed haddock for 34.99. The fish had been frozen and the ground up not fresh crabmeat was plopped on top. Again, a ridiculous price for such poorly prepared food. The salad bar that comes with the meal was very messy with food spills everywhere making it look like a starving hoard had just gone through. This was one of those experiences where you leave saying I could have made that better at home. We left half our meal untouched.

Yelp
By far one of the best restaurants in Plattsburgh! We've been to Butcher Block many times and we always have the unlimited delicious soup and salad with our entrees. We were seated immediately on a busy Friday night. The staff is very friendly and kind. Our waiter, Jay did an outstanding job. There was a very rowdy crowd from Canada and Jay was able to make it a more enjoyable dining experience by asking them to lower their voices professionally. The food is very good, and the bread and butter amazing! We ordered the Butcher Burgers and it was perfect! We always love coming here - perfect for families and date nights. Highly recommend this family owned and operated business.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place, but the bad just outweighs the good for how much it costs. Ok so the good: the smoked turkey Mac and cheese was decent. Portion size is massive, and there is plenty of turkey in it. I love the ambiance of the place. It has a great country feel to it and was very clean. The not so good: potato skins were burnt, one crab cake was cold, the rice was dry and flavorless, the green beans were raw and cold. The bad: the prime rib was cold, there was so much au jus on it the waiter spilled it from the plate trying to put it down. The prime rib itself was tough and tasted of nothing but salt. The worst part: the service. Now this, I know is just my waiter. Everyone else I saw seemed to check in on their tables, and the people who brought us food and cleaned dishes were great. My waiter was none of those things. He never came by, we asked for something we waited while he walked around looking lost. So if you get the waiter with the mullet run.

Joe F.

Yelp
My steak was the best one I've ever had! Great experience and I love the salad bar. My steak was lean and perfectly cooked. It was larger than expected although I don't recall any size being specified. Restaurant gets really busy so you may want to go early.

Rhonda V.

Yelp
My sons went on there limited time lunch break today and my younger son ordered a burger medium done and was served a completely raw burger and then had to get back to work and was too polite to complain but I'm doing it now ! This place is terrible!!! No more chances

Yelp
Best Happy Hour in town. 2-1 drafts, wine and well. Clams, mussels, wings and pizza. Gets busy, but well worth it. Nice crowd also.
google avatar

Peter J.

Yelp
Nice folks, good soup from the salad bar. Ate there twice with vegetable and a cream soup (can't remember). The first time I did the soup and salad- very reasonable. The second did the prime rib... Cooked well and delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow it was me, my mother and my wife and the Butchers Block was amazing. They had an unlimited salad bar that was amazing and amazing food. The waiter and waitress were very nice and fast. I would definitely suggest this place to anyone who likes a log cabin type place with a southern look to it. I'm definitely coming back soon!

Joseph R.

Yelp
Poor management! This one star has nothing to do with the food or staff, great food and amazing happy hour. I was sitting at the bar on 9/11/24 and some old man came out and started cussing out the bartender in front of the entire bar, making her cry and run off to the bathroom. Customers and employees were left in disbelief. It resulted in many employees coming to the bar and consoling the bartender and it was obvious everyone had distain for the manager or whatever he was. A a$$hole is what he was. Very unprofessional on his part, he should not be in charge of anything.

Christi F.

Yelp
Food was fantastic! We were seated in a nice quiet booth. It took our server 20 minutes to bring our check but that wouldn't stop us from going back. And the salad bar is phenomenal. If you haven't gone then you need to.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Great service, our waiter team was very attentive and helpful. We ordered prime rib. It was a bit over cooked and not super appealing to the eyes. It was tender and flavorful. Long line at the salad bar. The place is a little aged but clean. Overall we enjoyed our meal
google avatar

Terry C.

Yelp
It's a shame that a place with such great ambience has such mediocre food. Straight from the frozen food truck. Salad bar is very basic and hasn't changed in 50 years. Soups ok, nothing special. I ordered a roast beef dip - beef well done served on a hot dog roll with a small cup of bouillon. Other party had a BLT- plain white bread, tasteless skinny tomato, reheated cheap bacon. If they spent a few bucks more on quality ingredients rather than the bottom line, they'd be better off.

Yelp
Enjoyed a very nice Happy Hour Dinner Special on a Wednesday late-afternoon with the sweetness. The place was hopping, filled with laughter and the wait staff were attentive and quick to satisfy all of our questions, while the kitchen did a great job keeping up with the crush. A great restaurant experience on a rainy week.

Yelp
I'm confused... got there for a late lunch on a busy day, about 2:30. Was told all that was available was the soup and salad bar, couldn't order from the menu. Since I was starving and there was no option close -by, I settled. The next person who came in got a menu and ordered a burger, and another group got the tavern menu. Server said they switched to the dinner menu and didn't take orders for a little while. I said the hostess could have explained that. The reply? "Oh well , she's new". Clearly communicating their business hours should be basic. The website says this: Lunch: 11:15 am - 2:30 pm Dinner: 11:15 am - 8:30 pm It does NOT say you cannot get food at certain times!

Karen R.

Yelp
We came here with mixed emotions after reading the different reviews on line. we came here from Copenhagen, I can highly recommend coming to this restaurant. the salad bar was fresh and has lots of variety, it also included a corn chowder soup which was great. the servers were attentive, food service was fast, the food was hot and plentiful. Can't say enough about this place. would come back next time I'm in Plattsburgh.

Kayla P.

Yelp
we made a reservation a few days before because it was New Year's Eve. when we arrived they did not have the reservation and told us it would be a 30-60 minute wait. we went to the bar and the hostess said she'd come get us when a table was ready. after 45 minutes same could see empty tables so my husband went to ask and they said they already seated our party. OBVIOUSLY not. we were seated immediately and then waited 20 minutes before we asked for wait staff. The Ladies room was dirty/messy. The salad bar had no plates available. Then 20 minutes later our meals came but never our appetizer we ordered. Food was delicious. Service was horrible. Yes it was New years eve but they were unprepared and the hostess was unable to do her job properly.

Yelp
Great service Great food. Great salad bar. Beware of the dessert. If you're dining alone, you won't finish it.

Roy G.

Yelp
Porterhouse steak was nothing but fat, price's are extremely expensive for what you get.

Yelp
My daughter and I came to the restaurant on 10/26/2023 between 4 and 5:30 PM for the early bird special. My daughter got the 10 oz prime rib with French fries and I got the crabmeat stuffed flounder with almonds, perfectly cooked green bean and for the starch I chose wild rice. The prime rib was cooked exactly as ordered and appeared larger than 10 ounces, and it tasted delicious. The seafood dish was better than I have had in a long time. Our dinners were $22 each and they came with the unlimited salad, soup and bread bar. The salad bar was fresh and delicious, the raisin bread was a treat, and the potato chowder was perfect. The host was fast and brought us to a nice comfortable booth. Our table was handled by two people Lindsey and Jay. Both servers are hospitality professionals and they made a dynamic team. They knew the menu, are upbeat, their timing was spot on, and they refilled the sodas ($3.50) endlessly.

Yelp
The food at the Butcher Block is very good. Not the best I've ever had, but not the worst either. Skip the dessert, make your own at home. The salad bar included cold plates which was a nice surprise. I got the clams for an appetizer and wasn't too fond of it. Kind of tasted like seawater. Dinner: No one had any complaints with their meals. Each came with generous portions. Even the petite options were more than enough! Someone in my party got Crab legs and they were cracked ahead of time. Dessert: I would skip the dessert if you come here. The carrot cake was made with buttercream icing and not the traditional cream cheese frosting. The cheesecake was disgusting!!! Weirdest texture and flavor ever. Overall a good meal, but wouldn't rush to go back tomorrow, maybe in a little while.

Susan S.

Yelp
Food is good. I like the salad bar. It isn't a foodie place but decent. I do not recommend the escargots. Service is very good.
google avatar

Yelp
Haven't been to the Block since pre-COVID and unfortunately the wait wasn't worth it. To be fair, they still have one of the best salad bars I've ever seen, with many many choices for extras. Plus great breads and always a good soup. For that, they get 5 stars. However, I ordered a Buffalo Chicken wrap, something I used to order back in the day and loved. What a disappointment this was today! Instead of crispy, seasoned chicken sliced in the wrap, this was chunks of chicken(?) swimming in a runny hot sauce. Terrible! I expect this low quality of a sandwich from a highway diner, not an upscale restaurant - especially for $18! (including the salad bar, which was why the overall rating wasn't 1 star). I used to love "The Block" for the lunch special but I sure didn't all back in love with it today.
google avatar

Troy T.

Yelp
Awesome rustic atmosphere! Personable staff and great quality food. The salad bar is a meal in itself so I'm glad I just got the half rack of ribs. Highly recommend
google avatar

Randy G.

Yelp
This is where I go in Plattsburgh when I want a burger! Hands down one of the best and you can't beat the added value of the salad bar! The service is always great awesome beer selections and the burgers are off the chain!
google avatar

Ruth B.

Yelp
First time here, would highly recommend it. Food was great, service was great. Atmosphere has the feel of a rustic hunting log cabin. Food is home made. If you want something different than the norm, this is the place to go. Well worth the money you spend.

Yelp
Cold bland food and rude staff. All very overpriced. The restaurant was very cramped and loud as well. Not a great experience.
google avatar

Alexis R.

Yelp
My husband and I tried this restaurant, and the food was very overpriced for what it is. $14 for a burger meal. I asked for it to be cooked medium-well and received rare on the inside, burnt on the outside. The fries were cold with a texture like rubber sticks with no salt.
google avatar

Val E.

Yelp
Warm atmosphere, good service and the food was plentiful and filling. A soup, salad and bread bar is included with entrees. Decor is rustic with cozy booths. There is a bar seating area as well. Great place with reasonable pricing. Recommended.
google avatar

Jodi T.

Yelp
Well I can say very overpriced food was what was food was fair but best of all I ordered the steamed clams they served dead clams. never ever again will I go there
google avatar

John Wayne L.

Yelp
Look no further!!! You've found the right place, you can't go wrong here I promise!!!

Stephen M.

Yelp
We came here for dinner. The total cost of the dinner was $64. i had a pumpkin ale which i enjoyed. For dinner I had the lobster mac & cheese. They did an excellent job preparing this dish. In addition, the seafood bisque soup was delicious. My wife had the chicken sandwich and she said it was delicious. The customer service was excellent and the place was clean. I do recommend butcher block for dinner.
google avatar

Paul V.

Yelp
This restaurant is not recommended. To start the water glasses were all dirty and food has no flavor. For the price of the plates it would be better off to go out to fast food. The service is subpar and no drink menu was offered.
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
Great food great service, angry atmosphere. This is our regular spot for several years now never a single issue.
google avatar

Lala R.

Yelp
Was not expecting what was inside! Beautiful interior. Very glad we stopped here for lunch. Burgers were huge and delicious! Nice staff. Soup and salad bar with meal. Very large spread. Bread was hard as a rock, I wish they had single serve rolls instead of cut it your self loaves.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Not impressed. Over priced, over rated food. Lackluster staff. The salad bar was disgusting and that was during the pandemic. It was a birthday lunch for me given by my mom, aunt's and cousins. I will not go back.
google avatar

Allegra R.

Yelp
My mom and I went here for lunch today and sadly we probably won't be back. I had ordered the steamed clams for us to share but our waitress I guess must of misheard me and we got two orders of them. Our waitress Kelly did not seem very happy to be serving us but the two women behind us had exemplary service from her. We couldn't even finish all of our clams as they were very tough and chewy. We both ordered the French dip sandwich but were surprised that it had no cheese or anything but the meat and aus jus. They also serve chips instead of fries which was disappointing to say the least. We felt ignored the entire time and like they couldn't wait to get us out. I don't know if Covid caused them to go down hill but they are not what they used to be.
google avatar

Gordy W.

Yelp
Service was great, the food however was no where near worth what I was charged. Prime Rib with Scallops (Surf and Turf) $46, the PR was probably a 12 oz cut over cooked, but more edible than the scallops. Scallops we're the size of a penny in diameter and tasted disgusting. The server took away the scallops uneaten and didn't even ask if there was an issue.... Will not return, the salad bar was good.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
Food price / quality rating 8.5. Atmosphere is like a barn reproduction. I had prime rib, which was as good as prime rib can be, and the wife had a salad and soup (chicken jalapeno and corn chowder) that was very different and delicious. Service was very good, and the prices were reasonable.

Joseph P.

Yelp
what's below one? Total s---t show. Horible uninvolved staff. Salad bars mess and disgusting ( had hair in my salad). Wife Carmen home vomiting that night. The steak was microwaved. Nobody gave a crap. pay t bill and GTFO!
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
My daughter, wife and I were very pleased with the food and service here at The Butcher Block. This restaurant is the sister restaurant of Lake George's The Log Jam which we have frequented many times. We thought that this food and menu we're much better with similar items as well as items not found on the Jammer menu. (A huge plus) super friendly service! Prime rib salad bar and a to die for burger is what we had. Thanks for a great evening!
google avatar

Julian M.

Yelp
Very friendly staff. Chicken bruschetta mashed potatoes with green beans was fantastic a large portion too. Craft beer selection was great, Dave's Pale Ale excellent. Beaver Bite Ipa great too. I will return
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
The staff was very good but the hostess was a bit overwhelmed. The salad and soup bar is well worth the price of admission. The steaks were good as were the sides. Although I must say it was the oddest preparation of asparahras ever. A but pricey. But overall I would still recommend it

Lori M.

Yelp
so my friends made the Mis take of bringing me here as a Surprise for my Birthday. I have worked at Restaurants, Fast Food, volunteered at Church Soup Kitchens, Harvest Dinners. seriously ?? Who Owns this place ? How are you a Steakhouse and you serve a near Raw steak, when medium was ordered? How is a baked potato barely warm, cold Green beans-i left hungry! So if your price point is this High, you need to deliver. everything was awful. salad bar, the basics of Pasta salad, can't even be made by the cooks I guess. huge waste of money, and I can't ever go back. my heart sank when we pulled up there. everyone I know says the same exact thing. what a waste of what should be a good place!! No excuse , place wasn't busy, you might as well Steal Our Money at the door !
google avatar

Brian Q.

Yelp
This place was really good with a sanitary bread, soup and salad bar. Appetizers were large and fairly priced, steaks were cooked perfectly to order . Will be back
