The 18 Best Restaurants in Louisville, Kentucky | Eater

"Contrary to its name, this East Main Street spot is more than a bakery — there are also a variety of breakfast and lunch items available. Operator and award-winning pastry chef Amanda Johnson created the fan favorite Wag sandwich: wagyu pastrami, hot mustard, and a runny egg on a toasted onion bun. If you drop by on a weekend, try to get your hands on one of the Supremes (rolled croissants), like the variation filled with strawberry pastry cream and topped with a matcha glaze, strawberry dust, and strawberry pearls. Know before you go: Bakery items sell out quickly, especially the weekend specials. If you have your heart set on a certain treat, order online ahead of time." - Lennie Omalza

I stopped by just to satisfy a craving and ended up in dessert heaven. The Cookie Monster Croissant was rich, flaky and just the right amount of sweetness. The chocolate chip cookies? Perfectly chewy with melty chunks of chocolate in every bite. Totally worth the detour & I think one of the best in town. Highly recommend!

Google
Nice little bakery! It was a bit busy of course on a Sunday but it was well worth the wait. I got their Smoked Salmon and it hit the spot! Next time I might have to dabble and try one of their Cruffins or pastry’s!

Google
My husband and I went around 9:15 on a Sunday, it was a little crowded but there was still space to sit and all the staff we interacted with were kind. I highly recommend that bacon and cheese croissant and the raspberry danish. My husband really liked their monkey bread muffin. Everything was super fresh and the drip coffee was awesome as well. Highly recommend visiting!

Stumbled across this gem of a shop! The staff were helpful with recommendations! We had the bourbon Carmel iced coffee and the Vietnamese style coffee, we also had a chocolate pastry (I didn’t catch the name) which was amazing! Despite being later in the day it was still buttery, flaky, and an overall semisweet flavor! If I were a local this would be my spot!

Google
Pastries and croissants are amazing. We wish we can sit and enjoy the food inside the bakery. It is crowded and not enough place to sit and enjoy. Otherwise food is amazing.

Google
This place is delicious 12/10. The hazelnut pain at chocolat almost made me cry. Don’t forget to get a fresh baguette to go! Sandwich not pictured because I destroyed every last bit.

Google
I was very satisfied with this place. I got a matcha latte and a egg bacon biscuit sandwich. And it was delicious. I loved the flavor of the bacon. Its kinda big I'd probably split the sandwich next time. That matcha latte was perfect. Not overly sweet. The color was rich and green I am very satisfied with the drink. We also got a lemon pie and a oatmeal cream pie. And that oatmeal cream pie that cookie was perfectly crispy. Probably my favorite one I've had in Louisville. Not too sweet. The hand pie was good I kinda wish it was baked and not fried. But the pastry was delicious and light. It was lil hard for seating. But it was a solid place for a sandwich and a coffee or tea. Definitely will go back again

Google
Great breakfast sandwiches, but... I got "The Wag", and it was amazing. One of the best, most creative breakfast sandwiches I have ever had. It was big, tasteful, and I savored every bite. But, we also tried the Biscuit breakfast sandwiches, and they were pretty average to poor. Very dry, boring, and overpriced. I do not recommend the breakfast biscuits.. maybe it is a personal preference. Limited seating, so come early!

Yelp
A friend and I recently stayed at an Airbnb in Louisville, and we walked up to this little gem down the street one morning for breakfast. Both ordered iced coffees, breakfast sandwiches, and a dessert, then walked back "home" to enjoy them. We sat at the kitchen island and devoured it all, wishing we had ordered more! The Bacon Egg & Cheese Biscuit with Chive Aioli is awesome! And our coffees were exactly what we needed after a night of drinking wine on our patio :) I also took home a Lemon Meringue Cruffin and scarfed it down the next morning. Anything made with croissant dough is delicious! Add in lemon and you're in heaven! Service was fast and efficient, despite the restaurant being quite busy that day. Very cool interior with unique furniture and a wide selection of local bourbon and whiskey for purchase. Next time I'm in Louisville, I'll be headed here the first morning I need breakfast and treats! :)

Yelp
I have only previously had pastries here (love the pain au chocolate) but had never had any of their actual means here I got the biscuit and gravy. The taste was really good, although it was mostly lukewarm, hence why it's not 5 stars. Just a little pickiness on my part but overall I liked it.
google avatar

Ruth D.

Yelp
Best biscuit sandwiches. Good espresso. Went with friends and we all had awesome food. Arrived late morning (10:30am) and low variety of pastries....clearly a good sign, they're in high demand. Arrive a little early next time. Seating availability is first come. Not many seats. Be ok with take away to be on safe side.

Yelp
All I can say is YUM! We had the best excursion to Butchertown Grocery today. The staff was so helpful (thanks for explaining 'porcheitta'!) and very thing was delicious. The Cookie Monster croissant was to die for, the lemon berry cookie the perfect snack, and our sandwiches we took home for lunch were fabulous. Such a great vibe with amazing options.
google avatar

JP S.

Yelp
We absolutely loved Butchertown! Great vibe and love the fact they have a great selection of bourbon for sale. The employees are kind and helpful and provided stellar service. Definitely going to stop by before we head it of town.

Yelp
Breakfast sandwiches were amazing! Was busy on a Friday morning, but well worth the wait. The Busch it was fluffy and the croissant sandwich was super buttery and flaky. Bacon was perfectly crisp and both breakfast sandwiches were filling and had good flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
This bakery has so many delicious things on their menu. They have great pastry's and sandwiches.

Yelp
Heaven for breakfast is what was discovered. My partner had the Butcher breakfast sandwiches and that was tasty. I am a sweet girl and the chocolate muffin/croissant with chocolate and coco puffs was delicious. The inside was filled with chocolate deliciousness. Next time we are in town, we will be grabbing lunch.

Yelp
Loved the Everything and Cream Cheese. Cookie was best sugar cookie I've ever eaten. All fresh and flavorful.
google avatar

Yelp
My Instagram feed was luring me here! I follow this place online and their pastries look delicious. I got a sandwich and the Cookie Monster pastry. This place does not disappoint!
google avatar

Talia D.

Yelp
2nd time so far, I have been to this establishment, and it has not disappointed. Service was fast each time and the restaurant itself was clean and peaceful with some chill music playing overhead. Both times I went there were an hour before closing so the pastry selections were low, but the ones I did try were oh so good! Especially the blueberry scone! Oh, my goodness, I expected it to be good, but I wasn't prepared to be craving it for days on end after I tried it. I will definitely be coming here on all my days off to indulge in my newfound blueberry scone addiction.
google avatar

Yelp
So so delicious! Amazing pastries. We ordered the Cookie Monster croissant, Raspberry Nutella Supreme and the Bourbon barrel sugar cookie and they were all delicious, but my absolute favorite was the sugar cookie! I also noticed that they had a Cookie Monster cold brew that they were able to make warm for me which was nice. Can be hard to snag a seat but it's a very cozy spot. The breakfast sandwiches also look huge and yummy!
google avatar

Yelp
Service: 8/10 Food: 10/10 Atmosphere: 9/10 The pastries are to die for! Would most definitely recommend!

Yelp
We arrived at 7:55 (opens at 8:00am) and from 8:00 to 8:15 there was a steady flow of people! No crazy lines, but some loyal community members. Coffee was good. Vibe was cool.
google avatar

Kelly T.

Yelp
This place was so cute! The chairs are big and cozy. The food was delicious! I loved that they had biodegradable straws and silverware for their to go orders!

Yelp
A space to love. Butchertown Grocery Bakery is a cherished gem with the most delectable baked goods and their own roast of Good Folks coffee, which is delightful. My partner and I can never decide which pastry to try because the case is so stacked with beautiful rows. We generally get a cruffin (a giant croissant muffin hybrid that is generally filled with a perfect flavored cream center and topped with a complimentary glaze) and the sausage biscuit (which is likely my favorite biscuit in town - so fresh and delicious). The space feels a bit cozy moody when you walk in and the cozy warm vibes continue as you interact with the sweet staff behind the counters. For tourists (and I suppose locals alike), there are several shelves stocked with an array of bourbon options.

Travis K.

Yelp
Awesome! The smell of the fresh baked goods are amazing. Great treats and super helpful..

Yelp
One of the best bakeries in louisville! I always love going to get a pastry. I haven't tried their lunch or their coffee but I recommend the pastries. They always change up their menu so there's also a few different items. It can be a little pricey but worth it. There's plenty of space to sit with different types of seating options. I love this place!
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
There's always something new and yummy to try at BGB, usually in the form of a scrumptious pastry. Great spot for a quick lunch, love the hot ham sando as well as the summer BLT. Hope these items make it back on their seasonal menu! They also have a great wine selection if you need to pick up a bottle.

Yelp
Butchertown Grocery Bakery continues to be the spot to go to for creative, buzz-worthy pastries. So when I wanted to get something fun for Valentine's Day, I headed here, and they did not disappoint. I got a very festive red velvet croissant, which was as decadent as it sounds. I also had to get a cream cheese croissant, my personal favorite. This is all the delight of an everything bagel in croissant form. And as a V Day treat for my son, I got him a sugar cookie. The service was fast. I had everything in hand in under five minutes, though I wish I could have stayed longer. A few people were enjoying the chill vibes. I will definitely have to come back soon with my laptop so I can stay and enjoy it for a bit. Don't sleep on BGB!

Yelp
10/10 some of the best baked goods I've ever had! Busy on a Sunday morning but worth the wait! My boyfriend and I went to Louisville for a weekend getaway. I had read about this place before going. We stopped here on our way to our first distillery tour and went back every morning! Their croissant with everything but the bagel seasoning filled with cream cheese is literally to die for!!!! I wish I knew how they did it so I could make them for us at home. I love that they have the free biscotti while you're waiting for your coffee too! I love the vibe of this place, small quaint coffee shop that makes you feel like home
google avatar

Sana K.

Yelp
Best breakfast sandwich ever! The biscuit was sooo good! My second biscuit in lville and they are so good! No place in indy makes biscuits like this! So ordinary but so good!! They stayed busy. Small Cafe where u order then they call you to pick up. Coffee and lunch and breakfast options.

Yelp
So nice to come back to Butchertown Grocery! I have meant to stop in several times but seem to miss it before their close at 2p. This spot, great for brunch, offers a relaxing atmosphere for food and drinks. I really enjoyed my Vietnamese iced coffee. It was flavorful and not overly sweet. My bacon, egg and cheese sandwich was filling. Quick note if you choose this - the spread has chives. It mixes well and thankfully my sandwich today didn't overdue the amount or it would've overwhelmed me. Next time I'll opt out of the spread. The apple butter is mildly flavored and thin, similar to applesauce. Delicious biscuits! You won't go wrong with any dish that includes them. My husband enjoyed his bacon sandwich with jalapeño cheese. It came with a tomato basil soup. He said the basil was really strong and he added a lot of pepper. Overall, hit and miss on the food but we loved the space and enjoyed starting out our day here. I noticed at noon that their bakery items were low so if this is what you're craving you should get there in the early hours. This spot stayed busy our entire visit. Seats could be tough to grab depending on the crowd. Street parking, and no meters to feed. Located in the Nulu area near popular shopping.
google avatar

Virga H.

Yelp
This place seems trendy and "cool." When we got there, every seat was taken, and there were lots of people coming and going while we waited for our to go order. We got the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit and a few pasteries. The biscuit sandwich was good, although (and this is NOT a bad thing) the biscuit totally fell apart. It was fluffy and had amazing flavor! We also got a lemon bar, tangy! The apple "pie" was sweet and tart, and a banana creme croissant. They have a wall of wine and bourbon for purchase and some interesting options for coffee. Definitely worth a trip and I look forward to going back and trying other items!

Yelp
Walk into the natural light of this cozy corner gem and be treated by the smell of fresh back parties and fresh Good Folks Coffee. Make your way up to the well stocked displays and say Hey, to your Friends stoked to provide a tasteful and fulfilling morning breakfast and vibe. Matthew greeted us at the counter. We spoke of coffees, pastries and our favorite local movie theater. He then offered his expertise in the coffee category and recommended their seasonal cold brew that had an extra twist of coconut to really bring you into those summer feels. We added on one of their signature Cruffins. A muffin-croissant creation topped with a rotating glaze and cream filling. It was mind blowing. I was too exciting about eating it, that I forgot to snap photo evidence of it size. If you're in the Nulu area and are looking for a place with authentic Local Wonderful Humans, a Calming Open Atmosphere, this is it!

Yelp
Yeah, this place is 100% legit. I thought I has scored when I ordered the Butcherblock: House made ciabatta, bourbon smoked ham, soppressata, mortadella, provolone, arugula, over medium egg, chive aioli. But no, I knew this was a five star place when I tried the Ginger rhubarb hand pie. SO GOOD. Also the plain croissant was amazing so yeah now you gotta try it.

Ricky M.

Yelp
The Biscuits and gravy w/country fried steak was spectacular. The almond croissant was on par with most other high end bakeries The falafel on flatbread was very fresh with cucumber. Latte w/(in house) bourbon caramel syrup was awesome The service was great with a short wait. Dining area is small but nice and relaxed! Highly recommend this place for breakfast/brunch/lunch

Owen A.

Yelp
Always enjoyed this place but their prices are outpacing the market nearby....$12 for a breakfast sandwich that is good but not mind blowing is a bit heavy handed. They were $10 the last time I was in, which was above but paid anyway as I like the place. Here's the real issue. For this price, you better not have eggs shells baked into the eggs. Had the most uncomfortable bite of my sandwich this morning. As did my wife. Cmon, have better food prep guidelines. May give this another try down the line, but after eggshell bfast sandwiches, not sure.

Yelp
Coldest day in Louisville in 40+ years and yet you walk in here and it's like a warm home for the holidays. Once again Amanda and her crew have delicious goodies to make you feel like family. Everything is super flavorful and so tasty. If you are anywhere near this place stop in and enjoy. Treat yourself it is worth it. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best, if not THE best, place we stopped at for breakfast for our long NYE weekend in Louisville. Not the best coffee drink I had, but hands down the best breakfast sandwich. Highly recommend the danwich. The atmosphere was very chill and relaxing. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Sierra J.

Yelp
I find myself visiting this bakery when I have a craving for a cream cheese danish. They make a delicious maple cream cheese danish that hits the spot. I typically go across the street for coffee, but last time I tried theirs and it was very tasty. I tried their pumpkin spice latte and it did not disappoint. It was deep and rich with flavor. My fiancé and I love their oversized chairs - makes for nice snuggles while you enjoy your pastry and coffee. The atmosphere here is nice and cozy. The only thing missing is a nice fire element. I will definitely be back when I'm once again craving a cream cheese danish.
google avatar

Lee L.

Yelp
This was my first time. I have to say, the ambiance and decor definitely get a 5 star for me. Food wise, they're ok. What disappointed me the most was the lack of options for non-pork eaters. Most of the breakfast options, minus the pastries had pork one way or another. The only thing I could order was egg and cheese biscuit. For the price paid, the quality was just alright for me. Coffee was good though. The cashier was not friendly at all. She was a little standoff-ish and seemed less enthused to take our order. I might return if they offer more choices without the pork products in them
google avatar

Ross S.

Yelp
Great place to get some local coffee and pastries. Probably had the best lemon bar ever and my wife's shark week cookie was great too. Service was fairly efficient and coffee drinks were spot on.

Alexandra D.

Yelp
TLDR: Overall, good food and super cute atmosphere, but will ultimately not be revisiting due to rude staff and price of the food. I'll continue to take my business to Blue Dog Bakery instead. My partner and I visited Butchertown Bakery around 12:30PM on a Saturday. Although there was a short line, the small restaurant was hopping with nearly every seat occupied or reserved with a customer's coat. Super cozy and homey atmosphere. Tables could definitely use a wipe down. The person at the counter taking orders was SUPER standoffish as was the other staff that we encountered at the front of house. This is super disappointing - especially when we paid nearly $50 for food. The three people in front of us paid $70! I ordered the Danwich, which was really good! The warm danish buns and chive aoili really did it for me. One note - This sandwich is very tall, which makes a little awkward to eat. I also got a hot vanilla latte, which was awesome as well! My partner got the Jalapeño Popper Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup that was also very good! I loved how herbaceous the soup was! Because we arrived later in the day, the bakery items were mostly unavailable (as expected / totally understandable). After being told that the chocolate chip cookies left in the display case were already sold (and proceeded to sit in the case for the entire duration of our visit?), we settled for an oatmeal cream pie and a bourbon barrel sugar cookie. I personally wasn't a huge fan of the flavor (Bourbon barrel tasted a bit too much like greasy bacon) but I really enjoyed the texture - Soft and chewy!
google avatar

Zach F.

Yelp
Staffed, pleasant atmosphere and an extensive throughout menu. I got a cold brew with oat and SF vanilla, and house sausage biscuit. They also had complimentary biscotti that were tasty, not sure if they always do but loved it

Jason S.

Yelp
I couldn't decide between the breakfast sandwich or a pastry so I got both. I'm glad I did! Their coffee and teas are great, too. As a bonus, they have a unique selection of some hard-to-find local bourbons for sale on the side. Great place.
google avatar

Marshall P.

Yelp
Enjoyed a sausage biscuit and bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. The sausage biscuit is a slightly different take with whole grain honey mustard adding a sweet element. The bacon, egg, and cheese is hearty and filling. Pleasant ambience for some work, but probably too quiet for a gathering, plus very limited seating.
google avatar

Simon K.

Yelp
Best biscuits you'll ever have! Buttery and crispy exterior with light fluffy interior. The biscuits and gravy with add-on country fried steak was phenomenal. They serve it as a sandwich with the gravy on the side. The country fried steak was so tender and flavorful. The gravy was made from scratch and delicious. The breakfast biscuit with egg, bacon, and cheese was also great. Nice bold coffee. Quality bakery items such as an amazing sugar cookie.
google avatar

Kelsey P.

Yelp
What took me so dang long to get in here?! I can't wait to go back. I love the complimentary treats they have up near the cash register. I'm assuming they change every now and then and I was lucky enough to stumble in when Almond Biscottis were being offered - yum!! Also, and I don't know why, but I always feel a little awkward asking for the wifi password for some reason. So, major points for having the wifi name and password clearly on display below "pick up here" sign - love it. The special that day was the Garden Salad, which I got to go. Sort of expected it to be a little heftier, more of everything, especially considering the price. But at least it tasted good. That's the other thing, the prices are little up there, but it fits the vibe of the whole space though. I'm excited to go back and try out more menu items in the future!

Charlece G.

Yelp
The customer service was great! They were very accommodating in trying to help me get my coffee to my liking and made some great food recommendations.

Erica L.

Yelp
I visited once and I cannot wait to visit again! This is such a cute and modern space to connect with a friend, read a book, or get some work done. I got a vegetarian egg sandwich and a croissant muffin and they were both extremely delicious and well priced.
google avatar

Netra A.

Yelp
Yum yum yum yum. I think I got diabetes just walking into this place. They gave so many delicious options of treats and pastries. You really need to check it out. Parking is in the street.
google avatar

Megan Z.

Yelp
Stopped by as a quick pit stop on my way down to Nashville and I'm so glad we took the time to Detroit! We originally intended to stop by Quills coffee across the street, but the line was astronomical so we pivoted to Butchertown! This quaint coffee shop had pastries that looked incredible! I opted for the almond croissant and it rocked my world! I also got a chai latte and it was fantastic. They also provide a complimentary biscottis with your purchase!
google avatar

Kaleigh E.

Yelp
I stopped in for a coffee and pastry. I had their coffee special, a cookie butter latte and a cookies and cream croissant. They had several kinds of croissants and pastries to choose from. They also had a large selection of bourbons to purchase
google avatar

Charles R.

Yelp
I loved this place. Was visiting Angel's Envy and this was a short walk away. Their breakfast sandwiches were delicious!
google avatar

Steven T.

Yelp
If you want a great local spot for some amazing food-this is a must! Try the "cruffin" the flavor changes every week and you will not be disappointed. The week I visited, it was strawberry/rhubarb. C'mon that's the best summer flavor ever! Also, if you're into bourbon this place can hook you up with some great options. Love everything about this place and you will too!
google avatar

Courtney F.

Yelp
We had eaten at the restaurant pre-COVID and we're SO sad to hear they had closed down, so we were excited to learn they still had a little bakery. Our one regret? Not getting coffee from here. Whew! It looked great, and really awesome options too. I was very jealous of all the types of lattes, I would probably come here regularly if I lived in the area. The chocolate chip cookie was OMG SO GOOD. I would eat one every day if I could. My fiancé got the hot ham and cheese and it looked so buttery and delicious - he said he could eat 2 more they were so good. I got the breakfast croissant and it was also delicious, croissants are hard to do and it was so good and flaky. Highly recommend, the quality of their items is no surprise based on the restaurant they used to have, and yet they still surpassed expectations. Plenty of seating, and it has a really clean, sleek vibe. You have to give it a try.
google avatar

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
The food here was delicious. I got the falafel wrap it was not dry. My friend ordered the Turkey sandwich (interesting mix and would order again) Butcher block breakfast sandwich was great. Great set up and would return
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Delicious coffee. Homemade breakfast sandwiches with killer sauce! A great local staple. Ambience is sophisticated. Service staff is always friendly.

Mary Z.

Yelp
Breakfast sandwiches at their BEST! Fresh ingredients done right. Friendly service and cool spot for a quick bite. The place has a great vibe.
