The owner of Bureau Bar talks about being a Black bar owner in Chicago - Eater Chicago

"Johnson describes his new bar as being an even 'swankier' iteration of his other Bureau locations — one in Little Italy, which has closed permanently, and a South Loop location (rebranded as 16th Street Bar, but still known as Little Bureau Bar) which is temporarily closed for renovations." - Angela Burke

NYC’s 20 Top Pastry Shops | Eater NY

"Pastry chef Ryan Butler’s eponymous shop is comfortable and exudes just the right amount of Brooklyn cool. Though savory menu items are on offer here in addition to a full coffee menu, do check out the sweets. Seasonal fruit is folded into the sugar bun rolls, orange Bavarian cream dresses up squares of poppy seed cake, and dense chocolate cake gets topped with swirls of cream and candied cherries. Butler’s morning glory muffins are a particularly elegant way to start the day: The combination of carrot, coconut, and pineapple is offset with a curl of passionfruit cream cheese icing." - Daniela Galarza

Google
✅ Avocado Toast - amazing and unique spin, with cured peppers and feta, my taste buds were very happy ✅ Overnight Oats - also amazing and unique spin with turmeric, berries, pecans and maple for a lightly sweet taste. Great cozy & inspiring ambience, music is not too loud which allows for conversation or focused work. Staff is very pleasant!

Google
Amazing avocado toast and yogurt bowl. Coffee is fine and the sausage roll was not the best but they have the option of pistachio milk which is really good. Ambience is nice and service was super friendly. They also have a really cute mug. We had a really good time, thank you for everything!

Google
By far the best yogurt bowel I’ve had this year! So creamy, fresh and savory. The breakfast sandwich was also a 10/10 and the ice coffee was just what I needed. Definitely adding this location as a must visit next time I’m in town. Highly recommended!

Antonio Rybalch

Google
Quiet place where you can have a breakfast with tasty coffee the service is fast. The food is good. I liked the design

Google
Wonderful experience here. Very cozy yet alive spot! Avocado toast was amazing, it has a kind of sweet touch of fruit on top of the avocado spread, which made the taste different from all other avocado toasts I’ve had. The coffee was standard temperature and size. The view of brooklyn bridge made the experience spectacular. The only downside is very small tables and chairs. You would hit other chairs even if you’re tiny when you sit on corner tables.

Google
Went in to get a hot chocolate and was greeted by the great customer service provided by the cashier that was on that day, Chelsea she recommended I get the Granola Parfait. The barista Viviana was really sweet as well. She took the time to ask if I wanted the chocolate really hot or warm which I really appreciate. I can say the hot chocolate was definitely really good. Will definitely be returning.

Google
Really good food, great breakfast spot. Cozy, casual and i love it. The prices are okay range for soho, had their coffee multiple times and i like it.

David Wang

Google
Had the chicken and egg wrap and the pulled pork sandwich. Bread was a bit too soft and gummy (fell apart with just a bit of sauce on it), and while there were larger chunks of pork, most of it was mush. Wrap was okay but nothing to rave about. Matcha latte tasted like someone whispered “matcha” next door — mostly milk. Decent vibe inside with a fair amount of seating but would skip if you’re looking for something that scratches that brunch/breakfast itch. Not sure if today was an off day or if the high ratings are driven by tourists.

Yelp
Friendly ,fast service. A lot of seating options and it's so cute inside! Good and strong latte! Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick bite. Pastries looked amazing but I needed something a little more substantial so I went with the avocado toast. They let me make a few tweaks and it was great. Lots of flair for something so simple. It was also delicious. Great cappuccino as well though I could have done with a bigger options. Small spot but nice amount of seating and plenty of to go options as well. Staff was friendly and helpful with questions. Not sure how busy this gets - when I was there it was not busy at all but it was soon after they opened. Good spot for a quick bite and coffee. And maybe some of those delicious looking pastries to go.

Yelp
The inside of the cafe was very cute and the service was great, staff was attentive. The packaging for their pastries and the glassware was also super chic, really added to the vibes. The coffee and pastries were not that great unfortunately. We ordered the triple chocolate croissant, date muffin, iced caramel latte, and chai latte. The croissant wasn't soft or flaky, was a tad bit too hard to enjoy. The date muffin was actually really good, just the right amount of sweetness. The lattes were both bitter and lacked real flavor from the syrups. Although cute in appearance, I don't see myself returning

Yelp
Great spot if you need to get some work done or just want to meet up with friends. The food is good, breakfast and lunch options. Mushroom latte is recommended and is the matcha latte. Service is good. Bus your own table or they may come and do it for you. One bathroom for customers only.
google avatar

Teresa C.

Yelp
Drinks were Soso. Their iced matcha latte was very milky and I didn't like that it had so much clumping on the bottom of the drink. I had one with regular whole milk and it was too milky. The other one I had with pistachio milk and little a bit of vanilla syrup was slightly better. Iced Mushroom latte - do not get this. It was bitter and mushroom herbal tasting. I wanted to spit it out after the first sip. Tried adding simple syrup but I just couldn't force myself to finish it. I guess maybe their standard coffee drinks and food are better but the 3 drinks I tried weren't that great.

Yelp
There was so much potential here. Prices are affordable especially for this area, but my experience was not great, to my fault. I ordered to go and didn't hear them call my name (I think?) and was waiting for ~20 min for the order to come out. They forgot my croissant so I had to ask for it, and while I was at the counter, the busser took my coffee from my table (my stuff still evidently on it). Luckily they gave me another on the house. The drip coffee is a bit bitter, but almond milk makes it smoother, and the croissant is kind of dense, not as light/fluffy as I'd prefer. It is very crispy though. Overall I'd return to try the avocado toast and maybe not to-go.

Yelp
This place is really cute. They have a lot of options for desserts as well as breakfast foods and really good coffee. There is a public bathroom available so that's always a plus.

Yelp
Butler Bakeshop & Espresso is a coffee and baked shop in SoHo. Their freshly prepared meals, pastry and perfectly brewed coffee will sure make you come back over and over. This particular location is at the corner of Grand and Lafayette street. They have three other location in NYC. We came on a warm (43 degree) cloudy Christmas Eve morning to grab breakfast. We were bedazzled by their cute interior design, layout and its natural light throughout the entire coffee shop. I ordered their Avocado toast x egg and hot Latte. Food was terrific as well as their hot coffee. Service was impeccable. Staff were cordial and professional. Prices were economically fair. Overall, I had a good order experience and enjoyed our food/coffee. I recommend this coffee shop.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch today, would give a 3.5 but rounding up to 4 due to nothing being outright bad. Service - 5/5, friendly! Cold brew w/ oat - 4/5, pretty good! Breakfast sandwich - 3/5, bacon was a bit overcooked (also, it looked like only 1 strip total was used), and the portion was rather small. Side salad was just greens with some sort of vinaigrette. The bun and truffle aioli were both good though. That said, overall, I didn't feel the dish was worth the $13 and wish I had gone with a pastry instead. I'd likely return for coffee and to try a croissant, but I've had better breakfast sandwiches elsewhere.

Yelp
Stopped by agin hoping to actually get a pastry or food. The horrible customer service boy from yesterday was not in sight - thankfully. Requested avacodo toast but wanted a croissant instead of sourdough. Also stated I will pay for the croissant. The response was 'Not able to make any substitutes.' Ok as I was paying for the croissant there was no substitute. Just make it without the sourdough and I will pay for the croissant. NO NO substitutes was the only answer!! Although reading the review from Kathleen C she was able to make a few tweaks to her avocado toast. I just wanted to buy a croissant and not use the sourdough bread. Again for the third and last time horrible customer service!

Yelp
This is a cute little coffee shop in SoHo. I ordered a bowl of fruit, granola and yogurt and it was drizzled with honey. My family all ordered pastries, which were light, flakey and delicious. I can picture this place being packed on a weekend, but we were there on a Monday morning. It was a functional and light breakfast. We also enjoyed the coffee, tea and juices.
google avatar

Yelp
Good coffee with an upscale, Tribeca-esque ambiance: it would be a perfect place to sit down and catch up with an old friend. There's only two problems: they don't have enough baristas (so there's always a line to place your order), and there aren't enough tables or seating (which unfortunately is to be expected for most coffee shops in Manhattan).
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
This is the place for avocado toast! The service is attentive to special dietary needs, and the food is delicious. The calm, comfortable ambience makes it a pleasant place for brunch.
google avatar

Phoebe A.

Yelp
I've walked past this spot a few times before, and am glad to finally try it out. The cafe itself was very cute, although it was unclear which door was supposed to be the entrance haha. I got the everything cruffin (everything bagel + croissant + muffin), which was nice, flaky, and delicious. They also warmed it up for me, so it was definitely served at its best. Will definitely come back again to try their coffee drinks or teas.
google avatar

D G.

Yelp
I got there early in the morning. There was no line which made it very peaceful and enjoyable to get a breakfast sandwich and sit down with it. On beyond was great I enjoyed the vibe. The service was friendly, and my food came out perfect.
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
I needed a morning pick me up while window shopping in Soho and the mini sausage roll ($5.25) though mini held me over until my lunch a couple hours later. The matcha tea ($5) was full of flavor and the outdoor seating was promptly cleaned after customers left. There's plenty of indoor seating but it looks like lots of people already know Butler is a great place to meet up with friends so come early if you want to sit a group.
google avatar

Yelp
Coffee shops are a dime a dozen in Manhattan, but a coffee shop that's spacious and has a clean restroom is a rarity. Butler has much more to offer than that. Its aesthetic appeal gets you in the door, but it has great pastries to offer too. The prices are a little steep for the size of the pastry but typical for Manhattan. For my first visit, I tried the Everything Cruffin. True to its name, this soft, flaky hybrid delivered everything I dreamed it would be. It was a great pastry and the everything cream cheese filling made it better. As I was eating, I saw staff prepping pastries at the counter. It seems like pastries are freshly made, in-house, which partially justifies the price tag. Thirsty scholars can rejoice, because they also have a water filter machine at the back where you can refill your bottle (or glass) as many times as you want.
google avatar

Yelp
Latte was very smooth and perfect roast. The place was very cute and a decent amount of seating. Good atmosphere too. Service was pretty good too
google avatar

Nicholas C.

Yelp
My friend and I had the opportunity to visit Butler on a weekend morning for coffee and a pastry. I have not been to this location before and I was surprised how busy it was given that we arrived fairly early in the morning. Regardless, we were able to find seats at one of the high countertops and place our order through the QR code. We both ended up just getting iced coffee and I got a croissant as well. Overall good service, they brought the items out to your table when they were ready. I recommend again given its proximity to the Subway, as well as it being downtown. A good option to go to with a friend in order to catch up over coffee!
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
So glad they have this place. The egg and mushrooms is very good along with the cilantro sauce. Better than Starbucks. They offer a different variety of snacks.
google avatar

Mary L.

Yelp
There are not many pastry selection and this place is packed and crowded. I ordered a tea and that is seriously good. Good place to spend in an afternoon.
google avatar

Nik K.

Yelp
Rob does an excellent job. Pastries are always up to par. Creative yet simple and delicious
google avatar

Yelp
Cute spot! Always pretty busy when I walk by. Came in just for drinks, so I can't speak to the food. But the pistachio milk is a favorite for me! I also tried the mushroom latte and I enjoyed it! Staff was friendly and gave us samples of pistachio and mushroom flavors when we inquired about the flavors.
google avatar

Jenn L.

Yelp
Butler is such a cute coffee shop in SoHo! They do have wi-fi so you can work out there BUT sometimes the wifi connection isn't strong which can be frustrating when you do have client calls. So if you plan on working there, make sure you don't have a lot of calls ha! Other than that, great pastries options (I tried the double triple chocolate croissant and did not disappoint), and their breakfast sandwich is SO GOOD. Highly recommend. I dig the vibe, great music, and overall enjoyed the coffee shop vibe.
google avatar

Brooke K.

Yelp
Cute little cafe nestled in soho. Nice on the inside and they have a selection of pastries inside. I ordered a coffee and an egg sandwich. The egg sandwich was good , except small and a bit overpriced. They say they have a truffle aioli on the bun which is shown but it doesn't carry much truffle flavor and the sandwich itself is pretty small. The salad could of had a lil salt and pepper but I guess I could have added that myself, right? Anyways this coffee/egg sandwich cost me around $15. Eh, debating if it was really worth that.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
A big beautiful new location just opened, their 3rd total and first one in Manhattan. They have great pastries and baked goods for breakfast and also lots of savory options, with more for lunch time. Get the Triple Chocolate Croissant and the Chicken Salad Sandwich for lunch, or the Grain Bowl for something lighter.

Nikki A.

Yelp
Food: 8/10 - The coffee could be less bitter. Service: 9/10 Ambiance: 6/10 - It's way too packed on a weekday. I could barely find a table.
google avatar

Helen C.

Yelp
Cruffin? Say what?? Not bad, not bad at all. Croissant? Yes, please!! To those who want coffee, stop by here. To those who want something traditional, stop by here. To those who want something different, yep, you got it, stop by here!
google avatar

Justin T.

Yelp
Stopped by for some not-very-potent cold brew. Lots of seating inside and outside. No complaints. Great spot to people watch, get some work done, or just rest your feet.
google avatar

Yelp
Spacious and stylish interior. Friendly and helpful staff. The tea is absolutely great. I ordered a green tea and it's absolutely taste well.
google avatar

Ruina Z.

Yelp
AMBIENCE What a cute spot! Major Williamsburg vibes! I took a photo of the interior - as you can see, it's clean, bright, and spacious! That's not easy to come by in NYC! When I went, there was no line and there were plenty of spots to sit DRINKS I had their iced matcha latte. It's a little bit on the sweeter side. But I enjoyed it very much! Didn't try their food since we came here after having a full meal right before, but I heard their pastries are good so will definitely be back! SERVICE Warm, friendly, excited staff. Took our order right away.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
Amazing avocado toast and latte. The chef came out and chatted us. Very clean and relaxing space.
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
I've seen Butler all over Instagram and Tik Tok and have known it's a chain in NYC for a while, so I'm glad I made a visit. This seems like a relatively new location, and the interior is very pretty. I honestly am not that big of a fan of their coffee (ordered an iced vanilla latte) or their acai bowl, but maybe I just didn't order the right things. I'm definitely willing to come back and try some of their other options because they had so many other coffees that sounded delicious.
google avatar

Jenny B.

Yelp
Good afternoon tea place to go. Great staff, nice service. Nice music and vibe. Recommended.

Adam L.

Yelp
A Dumbo Staple. Employees are the best. Coffee is great and the baked goods are phenomenal.

Yelp
Butler is just what this neighborhood needed. Butler is a perfect choice for those that are looking for a lite bite or small pick me up. I stopped in this location twice, once for breakfast and once for lunch. I don't drink coffee but they had a lot of drink options, it was super tempting to try a drink but I stuck with water. The baristas were super helpful and always made a suggestion as to what to purchase. My favorite item was the protein bar, it was really tasty but not too sweet and it held me over for about 4 hours it was great. They, also, have plenty of seating and if you chose to dine in. On my next trip to NY, I will definitely frequent Butler.
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
I was getting my hair done in the area and wanted to grab a coffee since it was so early. I stepped into Butler and almost brought their entire display case of bakery items. Thankfully, or unfortunately, I had already eaten, so else I would've brought something. I had their cold brew and staff at the counter were quick and friendly. Coffee was good, if a tad bit expensive. But then again, I'm buying a cold brew in Manhattan, so I guess that goes with the territory. I saw a bunch of tables in the other end of the storefront, so I would definitely like to be back to have a sit down breakfast or brunch.
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
Breakfast Sandwich off the charts good. Fast service - great ambiance. The chef came out to check on our meals - love it.
google avatar

Krista W.

Yelp
I've been twice and I love this place. The barista with the highlights/nose ring was so sweet and she graced my latte with milk foam art (see pictures). Food and coffee are also delicious.
google avatar

Tsvika K.

Yelp
Excellent place for a nice relaxing pit stop . All 3 muffins (that i tried...) were fresh and favorable ! Berrys/dates/Olive oil. Mostly you got to try the olive oil one , yes they are all over the city but their's is exceptionally (with the Abraco one) good. Addition (second visit) their French toast bun is EXCELLENT! Their double espresso is very good (and served rightly so with sparkling water) Open , beautiful corner space , which take you a bit away from the hustle bustle of Soho .

Ciara M.

Yelp
Food is overpriced and underwhelming. Vibes are cute and music is great but not worth the $17 I just spent on the most mid breakfast ever.
google avatar

Peter C.

Yelp
Ok, almost walked past this place in search of caffeinated awesomeness- ding! Found it...what a cool am spot for a lite bite and frickin perfect coffee! Now you have to understand - I like my coffee, I mean REALLY like coffee and will risk a caffeine headache in lieu of a bad cup. I go to lengths for a good cuppa, so this is serious business. At home, my coffee area is cleaned and set up like Walter Whites' meth lab! So I have no problem being critical where the brew is concerned. The house brew was simple, with whole milk...nothing crazy but absolutely lovely. We also had some food. Momma K, not much the breakfast type, me I wouldn't have eaten but I glanced at the menu...pictured is what I expect to be served my first day in heaven. This avocado toast was so good, I came back the next am for more. What to eat day 3?

Yelp
This was a quaint find in Soho. Popped in during brunch time on a weekday and while I loved the ambiance, the non-veg breakfast empanada I got left an odd taste in my mouth. The flavors somehow weren't balanced (I suspect it was the arugula ? which did not look / taste like arugula) and while not bad, I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Unfortunately it did feel like a waste of ~$10. Although this particular item was not for me, I'd definitely consider returning. They have an array of pastries, breakfast (served well into the afternoon), and lunch items, plus loads of coffees / drinks.
google avatar

Heena J.

Yelp
Visited this place for a coffee to-go. I wanted a small house coffee iced with oat milk and I saw I was rung up for a cold brew. I tried to have the cashier correct it but she did it again. I ended up just going with it but the menu is confusing as to why they have house coffee (hot and cold options) for a lower price than a cold brew. Coffee itself wasn't terrible, but was too watered down for me.
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
Of course I have to stop in at a coffee shop that the amazing Ashley Graham referenced in a video on YouTube. I popped in before doing a Brooklyn tour as this was walking distance to the starting point. Cute little place off of Lafayette. My friend got the double chocolate chocolate croissant and I got the French toast cinnamon roll and the breakfast empanada. Both were super delicious and I wish I could replicate that in my house haha. I love the sauce that the breakfast empanada came with and both had such great flavor.. The French toast cinnamon roll was fresh out of the oven and super delicious. This is definitely a great place to stop in for some breakfast and I highly recommend a cold brew as well. A must visit.

Yelp
I came in for a quick drink before a wedding dress fitting. The vibe of the cafe was very conducive to staying, and there were a number of people working from their tables. I ordered an iced chai latte with almond milk, and it was ready in a matter of seconds! Their coffees also looked delicious, and I was surprised to see they featured taché pistachio milk, which I love! They also have a refillable water bottle station so I could get some extra hydration before heading out. Would definitely come back!

Darryn G.

Yelp
butler is my local coffee shop that I go to every day for an ice coffee and with oat milk and sometimes add a shot. The food is amazing and everything in display to eat is so tempting to get every day! the coffee is strong and what is most memorable is the service. the nicest people work there. they take the time to get to know their customers and are just genuinely nice people.

Olivia M.

Yelp
Brunch, anyone? I had such a fantastic time at Butler's SoHo location this weekend. Let's get right in to a rundown of the highlights + details. The interior: Walking in, the space is airy and bright, with a mix of marble and golden tables, supple leather bench seating, and pink accents. The staff and manager AK were so beyond friendly, and they made me and my friends feel welcome immediately. The food + coffee: seasonal avo toast: avocado toast meets summer salad, topped with watermelon, corn, goat cheese, and all sorts of goodness. breakfast empanada: a must order! warm, flaky, and with a delish scrambled egg filling (veggie version) petite French toast: freshly warmed, good icing drizzle pistachio milk flat white: just discovered Tache pistachio milk last week and was ecstatic to see it on the menu here. such a creamy nondairy milk! and no added oils. almond milk cappuccino iced golden milk: really stunning turmeric, with soy. Butler serves Intelligentsia espresso, and it tastes fantastic! Great attention to detail both in the coffee side and plating.

Yelp
Friendly staff and such a cute interior setup with perfect amount of natural light. Wifi, restroom, good drinks and food like where else can I find such a perfect place to work in nyc?!
