Hit Lunch Spot Butter Chicken Co. Will Open an H Street Location With Expanded Hours - Eater DC

"Butter Chicken Company, popular for its fast-casual Indian food, plans to open a second location at 500 H Street NE in February. Unlike the original downtown location, which peaks at lunchtime and closes after selling out, the new venue will open at noon, close briefly in the afternoon, and reopen for dinner. It will operate six days a week, offering dishes including butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, and vegetable biryani, with sides and Indian beverages." - Gabe Hiatt

Masala Art’s Owner Is Taking Over Toscana Cafe Near Union Station - Eater DC

"The new eatery, slated to debut in early October, will be called Duet. Its new owner is Atul Bhola, who’s behind D.C.’s Indian chain Masala Art. Bhola plans to keep the Italian theme alive with a few Indian dishes. The restaurant will feature authentic Indian art and artifacts, and utilize the existing patio. It aims to serve lunch and dinner in a small, beautiful space with an upstairs private dining room. The space, resembling an Italian grandmother’s aging house, is getting updates like a new paint job and refurbished hardwood flooring." - Tierney Plumb

When I entered the restaurant, it didn’t look like much. It certainly didn’t look the same as the photos I’ve seen online. There was only one person working when I arrived and the customer service was not that great. He wasn’t rude but he wasn’t polite and welcoming either. Didn’t smile, I informed him it was my first time visiting the restaurant and he pointed to the menu, which was fine but he didn’t inform me of any well-known/best selections. However, there wasn’t much to pick from (rice, butter chicken, cheese spinach, bread, and chickpeas) and that’s exactly what I ordered, and a premade mango smoothie. There was way more rice than there was chicken. I counted about 5-6 pieces of chicken which I broke into pieces so that I could have more with all the rice he gave me. The chickpeas were too hard for me personally and didn’t really have any flavor. The chicken was delicious. I didn’t taste any cheese in the spinach, the bread was great despite some burnt parts. Honestly, the best part was the mango smoothie. I should’ve got two because it was gone by the time I arrived home!! It’s more like a smooth, sweet, creamy mango dessert rather than a fruit smoothie with ice but it’s delicious!! I would definitely order it again if my sweet tooth was craving something sweet!!

Massively Disappointing "Butter Chicken" and Awful Service: I had a truly terrible experience with Butte Chicken Company in DC. Having ordered a standard tray including rice, their so-called "butter chicken," cheese spinach, bread, and chickpeas, I can honestly say the food was a major letdown. The "butter chicken" was particularly offensive. It tasted nothing like authentic butter chicken and was far from the rich, flavorful dish I was expecting. The other items were equally underwhelming, and the portion size for the price of $16.50 felt incredibly stingy given the poor quality. This meal was a complete waste of money. To add insult to injury, the customer service was atrocious. There was no greeting whatsoever, not even a simple "hello." The staff simply took my order and payment with zero acknowledgment or interaction. It was a cold and unwelcoming experience from start to finish. If you're looking for real, authentic butter chicken, steer clear of this place. Butte Chicken Company delivers neither on taste nor on basic customer service. They will only waste your time and money if you're expecting a genuinely enjoyable Indian meal. I strongly advise looking elsewhere.

Google
Not fresh food- I had a good experience for lunch and spoiled food for a dinner. First time ordered (butter chicken -$14 and chicken tikka masala-$14) for lunch everything was fresh and tastes good. Based on the first experience tried again before write the review, this time was for a dinner and ordered the same (butter chicken -$14 and chicken tikka masala-$14) I found that they are serving the same food from morning leftovers in the evening. I raised my concern and they prepared another one from the downstairs. I thought everything was freshly made and didn’t expect to receive from morning leftovers which was continuously on hot pot. I don’t recommend for dinner time!

Google
I had the food delivered multiple times. The food here is awesome I love butter chicken and Indian in general. One thing you do have to know is I would say that the food here is like Indian food but fast food version. The naan here is definitely frozen naan you can get at the international stores. The food is very good to me and it fills me up with the generous portions.

Last night as my hubby and I were driving home. He saw Butter Chicken and decided to stop by. Idk soon as I walked in I wanted to turn around. My hubby wanted to really try it so I’m like okay we can try and plus I like Indian food too! As we placed our orders in they warmed are food up in the microwave that’s red flag number one! Idk I think we should have left but we decided to get the food and now we are paying for it. I’m at work as I’m writing this and I’m pooping and throwing up this is miserable. I called my hubby and he’s at home doing the same thing! Please do not eat here!

Google
We order a standard tray. It was $16.50 for a choice of tiki masala or butter chicken or half and half. It came with two sides, I choose chickpeas and spinach. The chickpeas were hard. The butter chicken and masala sauce was terrible and just tasted like tomato sauce. The rice tasted old. The naan was nothing special, even Safeway was better. The portion was small for $16. I weight 200 lbs and am 510, i wasn’t even close to being full. I came here at 6 pm so I guess I get what I pay for because the food felt old. The upstairs was very very warm and the other side had mosquitoes around the whole area you couldn’t even site out there. It might be good to go, but I would recommend any other Indian place before this.

Google
😋 Delicious! Great change of pace from the typical DC steakhouses & “fine dining” meeting spots.

Google
Service was splendid, the butter chicken tasted rich and creamy, and I had a well rounded experience. I would recommend and will be coming back for sure.

Yelp
Pros: you get your food super quickly (they just scoop it into a container); good portion sizes; reasonable price for the amount of food; nice alternative to going into Union Station Cons: the food is "meh." It's just okay. Not terrible but not delicious, either. I don't regret going but I'm also not sure whether I'd return.

Melissa G.

Yelp
The food is delicious!!! I love their bread! The portions are small for the cost. The customer service is good.

Yelp
This butter chicken was definitely something to rave about! Hear a lot about it before and makes it at home often but never actually had it from a restaurant. It was very aromatic and tasted heat with the perfect amount of spice and the chick peas were great with the rice!

Brian D.

Yelp
This used to be a great place for a quick and decent lunch or dinner. The food was good and you got a decent portion for the price. However lately the service has fallen - they often don't have condiments available or seem to care you cane in. Today, I picked up butter chicken for lunch and the portion size is almost 1/2 of last time I came in. In addition one dish was cold and my butter chicken mostly rice. Sorry to say that this last visit was highly disappointing.

Yelp
Not Indian street food food, it was a true disappointment. Indian cuisine is extremely good and rich, and this place does no honor to Indian street food. The prices are relatively high for the mediocre food quality, so there is a better bang for your. Service was kind, very nice ladies but unfortunately you come to this places for food more than 5-star service. Ambiance was ok, enough sitting, no need for reservation. I unfortunately can't recommend this place.

Yelp
First I have to say that me and my partner are big fans of Indian food and this place was a big disappointment. I ordered tikka masala chicken with chickpeas and rice and my favorite part of the meal was the rice The chicken tasted really bad, the texture was not good at all, the chickpeas was in a "sauce" very watery, spicy but in an uncomfortable way, didn't taste Indian at all. I know that this place is a low key Indian restaurant and my favorites places are low key, I was not looking for something fancy, just good food, but this was definitely not the place to have real Indian food. Not recommended at all

Yelp
What a gem! For less than $12 you could get up to four different dishes. They're all in giant woks or giant cooking apparatus and you can see the sauce still simmering as the food is scooped up into your container. I got a split butter chicken and chicken tikka masala with vegetable biryani and Chana masala on the side. It comes with one garlic naan. And you can get (complimentary) sauces on the opposite end table -- they have cilantro chutney and vindaloo sauce. The chicken dishes were not too spicy and they were very flavorful. Gonna say it again, as a picky eater who has a pretty Asian palate, this is definitely a gem in flavors, portions, and pricing. $12 ANYWHERE in the States is good, but in DC is almost mind blowing. The VALUE is so there. One serving is easily two meals for me or a very hungry guy I think. I am definitely coming back again and maybe will even make this a regular spot!! Street parking is what I found.... Unless others know some secrets to share?
google avatar

Tara R.

Yelp
This place looks super cute from the road and is in a nice location close to Union station. The amount of food you get for the price is great! Each entree comes with naan, a main dish, and two sides. I got the butter chicken and I will say it was super spicy. Edible, but above my comfort level. If you like spicy butter chicken then this is the place for you!

Yelp
Some of the best Indian food around. simple, classic, and very tasty every time. This is my reliable spot, love this place. Service is fast and friendly and there's plenty of seating. Have tried lots of Indian food spots in the area and this ones always come out on top for food taste.

Yelp
I heard good things about this place on social media. I came in one evening around 9pm. And before i go further, maybe i would have a different review had i come earlier in the day. I ordered the paneer spinach, Chana masala and vegetable biryani. All the food tasted very stale, as if it had been sitting out for days. The Chana masala had a weird sour taste. I don't usually do this, but after a few bites i threw the whole plate away.

Yelp
I'm on a staycation at a hotel that doesn't have a restaurant so I' ordered this place for lunch yesterday. This food was great! I ordered the butter chicken. It arrived piping hot and was packaged securely. They included 3 different sauces, naan, flatware and plenty of napkins. The portion size was pretty large and could definitely be shared between 2 people. I had enough food to eat and get full twice. I also got a mango lassi and it was ah-mazing. I was so sad when I finished the last drop. I'd gladly eat here again! My only gripe is that there are only 3 options for sides. The entree already comes with rice, and I don't like chickpeas (chana masala) so my only other options for the two sides were saag paneer and vegetable biryani (more rice!) hahah.
google avatar

Leeann J.

Yelp
With Indigo right up the street, Butter Chicken Company faces some tough competition but they specialize in a select few dishes (butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, Chana masala, vegetable biryani, etc.) so they make them incredibly well. Their butter chicken is actually a little spicy and more tomato-flavored than it is heavy cream and sweet, which is the case at many places I've dined at around DC and elsewhere. I think that's what makes their butter chicken really unique and delicious! The saag paneer is also good, as it's not overly buttery and the biryani was tasty as well. For the price you pay here, the food is excellent and the portions are great! I'd highly recommend.

Mariah S.

Yelp
This place if okay if you're passing by and don't want to wait. The butter chicken is very sweet. But it's not bad, just not the best.

Emily H.

Yelp
Wow. This is an entirely different restaurant than 2 years ago. Our meal was inedible. We ordered take out butter chicken last night with Saag Paneer and Chana Masala. The chicken tasted like it was cooked in ketchup. The Saag seemed like it was from a can with mystery cold cheese in it. The beans were flavorless and also inedible. Save your money and go elsewhere. During the pandemic we ate here once a week and the food was spicy delicious and plentiful.....gone are the days.

Yelp
Had to come here because the name is A1. Sadly, the butter chicken did not live up to the name. I felt very watery- there was so much liquid that the texture wasn't the normal creamy goodness one would expect. Mango lassi was pretty good and prices were good for the portion size. However, don't expect to be blown away.

Yelp
I was planning to go to a nearby coffee shop when I walked by this restaurant - the smells wafting out were insanely enticing, so I decided to grab lunch here. (I don't know if I've ever stopped for lunch somewhere based on the smell alone, so this really says something.) Food (3.5/5): I ordered the butter chicken with sides of paneer and chickpeas, with a complimentary naan. I tried all 3 complimentary sauces, which you will find at the side table. Not the biggest chickpea or paneer guy, but these were among the best I've ever had. The butter chicken and naan were only *alright*. Very limited menu with only 3 main dish options. As others have noted, definitely enough food for 2 meals and very affordable. The food was too hot to eat when it was served, so I had to wait for it to cool down - not sure the last time I experienced that at a restaurant, and that's a minus. I also disliked that they didn't have free water. The side sauces were all good. Ambience (4.25/5): Despite the food being kind of a mixed bag, I realllly liked the ambience. It reminded me of some restaurants I visited in Mumbai. Very cool artwork, plus ample seating inside and out. Put on some light Indian music and you have yourself a 4.5+/5. Overall, it was fair. Tackle the things I mention above and it would be stellar. Not sure I will be back, but others seem to really like it, so give it a try yourself!

Yelp
Good food fast service, the only problem is no red meat on the menu, and dont have hot sauce

Yelp
Convenient location for those who leaves in Capitol Hill and those who have some train waiting time and want to eat outside of Union Station. Very clean. Simple menu: choice of chicken or a vegetarian platter that comes with two side dishes and noun. One can call to order ( to either pick up or have it delivered). I followed reviews of the other locations and ordered butter chicken ( as a take out). Large portion, tender tasty chicken ( quite a lot) over the rice. To my taste, there was way too much souse and a bit on sweet side but I think it is a matter of personal preference ( and I am not a big fan of Indian food to start with). One of the side dishes ( spinach with cheese) was super hot. I wish I was forewarned when I ordered over the phone. Everything else had the right balance of spices and was not hot but this spinach! Again, a matter of personal preference. If you don't like very hot food, just stay away fro spinach. Everything else is very good. I will go back to try chicken tikki. There is also plenty of sitting places outside, tables are safely spaced, if the weather is nice , eating outside can be an option. There is also a large sitting area indoors on the second floor but I didn't go ( prefer to limit my being inside). Overall, good service, good food, safe, clean, convenient. What else one can wish? :)

Alexander D.

Yelp
Generally good food and a good value. I'd normally say 4 stars, but a couple of recent orders have been inconsistent. Today our order had far less chicken than usual, and this was true across 4 different meals (both butter chicken and chicken tikka). We'll keep trying and see if things turn around.

New Y.

Yelp
I was really excited to try Butter Chicken Co as it I've been meaning to try it for a while. Heavily disappointed. Yes you get a lot of food. But the food isn't that good. The butter chicken doesn't taste like butter chicken. It lacked the creamy buttery taste. Instead it tasted more like chicken tikka masala. (Not sure what their tikka masala tastes like). Also the chicken pieces were massive. The paneer saag looked like it was cooked in a hurry. The spinach should be chopped finely. Every bite I took I got huge chunks of whole spinach leaves. And the naan wasn't slightly crisp and charred like a naan should be. It was lot more doughy, like a pita bread. Glad I got to try it but I don't think I would ever go back again.

Saqib A.

Yelp
If my order was right I would have been much happier. I ordered 3 dishes for take away. 2 butter and one tikka, when i got home I realized I had 3 tikka. Not just that, I had the wrongs sides for the dishes. ..the final thing that went wrong was in had no chutney. Overall the quality of services was poor tonight. 12.22.2021

Yelp
Good flavorful spicy indian food. Near to Union station very nice atmosphere. Lovely decorations upstairs sitting.
google avatar

Liz N.

Yelp
Can't beat the cost for portion. The chicken was creamy and flavorful. Um not the biggest fan of butter chicken bc it's too much tomatoes for me. I prefer the curry. The sides and saag are highlight and meals in of themselves. Recommend for fast quick Indian food on H.
google avatar

Yelp
My experiences at both the #2 and #3 locations have been great! I always get butter chicken- The sauce is thick, flavorful, a bit spicy, and rich. I also get double saag paneer (FYI- it's pretty spicy) instead of chickpeas because it's just so delicious and I'm not a big fan of chickpeas in general. Rice is always well cooked. Occasionally the naan can be kinda dry/hard but usually it's good. Definitely get a couple sides of raita to balance the spice and dip the naan into! I even add some to the saag to make it almost like an Indian creamed spinach. A few months ago I did experience a watery saag paneer- but clearly they fixed that because I frequent either of these locations 2-5 times a month, and it's always been consistent since then. Mango Lassi hits the spot too! The B1G1 discount on Uber eats is also an insanely great deal- considering the dishes for full price are already such an awesome deal! Oh and staff is always so kind! Keep it up BCC! Side note- I take some tums in preparation and would recommend the same if you suffer from heart fire as I do.

Yelp
We got Butter Chicken for lunch once while we were visiting DC over the holidays, as it was very close to where we were staying. Having had some encounter with fast casual Indian food in NYC and coming away with a favorable impression, I was interested to see how this would turn out. In short - it was below expectations, mostly because of the relatively limited scope of offerings. Any of the platters had a very small number (3 or 4) sides that could be selected, and the spice profile was a bit inconsistent. The curries themselves (I tried both the butter chicken and chicken tikka masala) were fairly generic but still decently-flavored, served over a healthy amount of rice. That begs a small question of why bother getting the biryani as a side (don't - it's very mild, and there's no reason to get more rice in addition). The chana masala, on the other hand, was good but substantially spicier than anything else on the plate. The paneer was pretty good, though. For the price, you are going to get enough food to completely stuff you or bridge multiple meals - my butter chicken platter was good for a lunch and a dinner over the course of one day. That said, I found the overall flavor profile to be very average, and the options for add-ons to also be more limited than I would have hoped. We only made one visit during our time here, and that was more than enough exposure during our trip.

Yelp
Great place for Indian food! There are multiple locations and this one is near Union Station located in a quiet neighborhood. Typical DC street parking. The portions are huge for $11. We split two dishes between 3 of us and had some leftovers. You get a generous helping of chicken, sauce, and rice, but that is not all- then you get two sides with naan bread! You can either choose from saag paneer (spinach/cheese), vegetable biryani (a type of veggie rice), and chana masala (chickpeas) - I've tried them all and they are all good. We got the tikka masala and butter chicken and were not disappointed. Before you leave, don't forget to grab the complimentary sauces on the counter - cilantro chutney, spicy yogurt, and vindaloo sauce. Be aware of their motto: "300 and we are done"-- that means when they sell out, they are done for the day! I went on a weeknight around 7 pm and their vats of butter chicken and tikka masala were almost out! Come here early if you want to grab some before they're out! Overall- a solid place to get your Indian food fix. The food is super spicy! Make sure you can handle the heat before coming here. ;)

Yelp
First takeout I had during my move to DC. This place was further for me than their other location over on H street which must have been closed due to COVID, but I'm glad this place was opened. The menu was very limited, only five options to select both the main and side dishes from. I think it would be better if the side dishes were different from the main. Additionally the food was already all prepared, so it felt more like fast food than restaurant quality food. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala as my main and chose the Channa Masala and the Vegetable biryani as my sides. This meal also came with a side of naan. Opposite of the register and the food, there is a selection of sauces one can take for free. The options were: Raita (a spice yogurt side), Vindaloo sauce (spicy red sauce), and a cilantro chutney. I picked up two containers of Vindaloo sauce. The total cost of my meal after taxes was $11.67, which is incredible especially given how much they give you (definitely at least 2 servings worth, I'd say 3 servings for me) and since it's DC! But in all honesty, as a South Asian who has consumed a lot of Indian and other south Asian foods over my lifetime so far, the food was kind of mediocre. I am sure those who did not grow up eating this food would find it more than wonderful, but I found it to be just okay. I would come again if I was craving Indian and was wanting something cheap and **fast**, but otherwise I'd go elsewhere. I felt that the chickpeas and the chicken were missing the acid component wholly and not enough salt and heat. The pulao rice was beautifully seasoned (I could tell there was a lot of ghee in there). The biryani was dry. The naan was just like regular naan. The vindaloo sauce was disappointing--it was not able to to hit the acid and heat aspect as one might anticipate. It tasted very much like red pepper flakes drenched in tomato juice. But overall the meal was decent, not great but not terrible. Most definitely filling which sometimes all you know. This was just fast Indian food, like Halal Guys. I would give the place a 3.5/5 if I could. I will try again sometime soon.

Judith A.

Yelp
The butter chicken was awesome! Plenty of food served glad I found this gem walking DC.

Amy H.

Yelp
I love coming here when I want something yummy that gives me lots of leftovers. I like the limited menu and convenient location. As others have noted, the butter chicken can be a little watery and I wish there was more actual paneer in their saag paneer, but the food is good and comforting.

Rachel R.

Yelp
Pros: A large serving for $12, the mango lassi is great, quick service. Cons: the butter chicken was very tomatoey and not creamy. The saag paneer had no flavor and was really watery. I wouldn't eat there again but it's cheap and a big meal.

L. T.

Yelp
I'd spend more and go elsewhere. It's not the most flavorful and it's extremely oily compared to other spots in the area. You get what you pay for.

Yelp
This place was my Jam!! But they've been dropping the ball. I hope it goes back to how it was. There is like no gravy no and it lacks the flavor it use to have.

Yelp
When you are roaming in Washington DC and looking for Healthy and Tasty food then you must visit Butter Chicken Company. I tried Butter Chicken and Nan and it was super tasty !!

Nae N.

Yelp
Sooooo freaking good. My first time tasting better chicken and it was better then I expected

Carla P.

Yelp
Simple and Delicious! No complicated items to choose from on the menu. They do a few things and they do them very well!

Brea B.

Yelp
Food tasted bland, butter chicken didn't even taste like butter chicken. Bread was also stale
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Thought that we would try something new. Large portions but it was just ok. Only gave it 3 stars because the staff made us feel like we were bothering them by asking questions. Not friendly or helpful. I will probably not return.

Bottito G.

Yelp
Have really enjoyed this Butter Chicken outlet in the past. The meals were delicious and filling. Went today and was served mostly rice with a few shreds of chicken and some sauce. Very disappointing.

Sahara B.

Yelp
Great customer service and they give you very large portions. But this was some of the nastiest Indian food i've ever had. Literally everything taste like it was made in the same sauces. I would never eat there again. The mango lassi was great!

Mark S.

Yelp
Took 1 each order of Butter Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala. Truly love it. Liked Spicy Chana masala too as a side. A huge portion Can't able to finish by 2 people.

Mazhar J.

Yelp
The food was fresh, properly prepared and a great value for the price. Ordered chicken tikka masala and became fan of it. I highly recommend it.

Robbie K.

Yelp
Got the butter chicken with chickpeas and biryani and it was awesome - we definitely got our money's worth. Quick, friendly service and a great atmosphere for outdoor dining right by Union Station and Capitol Hill.

Brad W.

Yelp
This place is phenomenal. Great flavors, great price. Really nice family owned place.

Stephanie P.

Yelp
Excellent Indian spot near Capitol Hill. Only a few choices, but all of them delicious! Best takeout Indian I've had in awhile!

Nathan N.

Yelp
I did a take out from here yesterday. The butter chicken and the chicken tikka masala was good. It was not crowed because of the weekend holiday. Anyway, it's a simple and little menu to choose from for a carry-out. I don't know if they have dine-in. The price is reasonable for DC standard. There are street parking beside but you have to go around searching for a empty spot. Depends on what time of the day you drive-in. The girl at the counter was pleasant and friendly. I think her name was melissa ( I could be wrong? because both of us were using the face mask ). Hope to see more restaurant of this sort to flourish in DC

Pat B.

Yelp
Big portions, tasty butter chicken. Get it before it runs out for the day! Delicious!

AJ J.

Yelp
Cheap, quality, plentiful. They only have 4 dishes and they do them well with huge portions, I respect it
