The 8 Best Soul Food Restaurants In Houston

"The food at Butter Funk Kitchen is primarily soul food classics. This Sunnyside spot only has a few tables, but if they're full, a seat at the bar is just as good and gives the best view of the frozen daiquiris on tap. We’ll take a plate of catfish here just for the crunchy ends and deep-fried ribs that make us want to shake the hand of the person on the fryer. The potlicker on the collard greens perfectly balances spice and brine, and we’ve seriously contemplated having the red rice and beans as an entire meal. But we usually end up getting crispy fried okra and dirty rice that’s spicy enough to make us reach for more lemonade. " - gianni greene

This place is small and cute. Most people ordered their food to go, but you can dine in. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The fried catfish was cooked perfectly, the mac and cheese was hot and creamy, and the cornbread was sweet and fluffy. The greens could have used more seasoning, but other than that, everything was good. I will be returning.

We came here for the first time after church and were met with a staff of warm hearted employees who served us, checked on us during our meal, and conversed with us like family. The food was absolutely delicious, we ordered nearly half the menu 😭 The only complaint is that the place is kind of small and crowded, and they were out of étouffée for the day, which is what we wanted coming there, and they didn’t answer the phone before arrival, but other than that it was very welcoming and homey. The chicken wings were really good and fried to perfection, but needed a tad bit more seasoning for my personal preference, they taste way better smothered in the gravy. The mac n cheese was good. The shrimps were good, but same as the chicken, could’ve used just a tad more seasoning for my personal preference. The dirty rice was great and flavorful too. Whoever was cooking in the back put their foot in that food. I don’t usually leave public reviews but I had to leave one for this place. We recommend it! I would rate my meal and experience here an 8.9 out of 10.

The food was so good and seasoned! We had fried cajun chicken wings, chicken and shrimp pasta, thenshrimp egg rolls (pass on them), red beans m rice, dirty rice, and a fish sandwich (the orange sauce was good but I got it on the side just in case).

Food was Ok. I had the hot lemon pepper fish serve with Mac n cheese & greens. Also tried the 2 meat pasta which was great. Gumbo was ok..Customer service was horrible. I will not be returning. The server never came back to check on us.

Google
Did not disappoint, the food was very delicious it's a must try . It's in a economical challenged neighborhood the people are not harmful and mind their business so no need to be scared. I gave high score because the food exceeds the other flaws. It's a small space it's best to order to go and yes they have online ordering. Service might take longer due to the high demand so again I highly recommend ordering ahead. “The service could be elevated with a bit more attentiveness from the staff. The place is really to small overall the food is very much worth it, give it a try.

Google
Maaan, they made this food just good enough for you not to care how big Houston is… I’m coming regularly. It’s a family type vibe.

Yelp
Finally, I am able to scratch one of Keith Lee's pop-up visit restaurants off my list! If you didn't know, Keith Lee, a world renowned food critic who reviews restaurants that need exposure to the right consumers to support the existence of their small businesses made a stop in Houston last year during his tour. His marketing and reviews have turned almost folding and closing restaurants into thriving enterprises after his reviews in effect. It's an incredible narrative that you can't help applaud, so I decided to keep the energy going and partake in some comfort food on Sunday after church and see if Keith Lee was just bluffin or was he on point with his review of Butter Funk Kitchen. I really had a hankering for some really good catfish. Memories of KL's video on Butter Funk Kitchen came to mind as he bite into the fish. Rewatching the video on IG, I was sold. Online ordering site is user-friendly with various food delivery options to use for pick up or delivery. I used Grubhub for this order since I already had a debit card attached to this account. Plus, Grubhub seems to have the same prices you'd pay for the food if you walked in the restaurant for a take out order or ordered straight from the restaurant's website. Anywho, I had the estimated time for the order and drove straight there. Parking, however, is a challenge. I knew it would be since I drive through Sunnyside going to work quite frequently. I ended up parking in front of the dumpster, waiting for anyone to leave to legally park and get my order. Sure enough, someone did leave and moved my vehicle to the side of the restaurant to wait until Grubhub said my order was ready. Soon as I saw the ready notice, I hopped out and entered in. Small spot - definitely more of a grab and go location, with a small bar for serving frozen concotions. They looked good, but I didn't want to go back to my car and get money to get one. Next time. I was greeted and given my order, which was tied down and in a black bag. Impressive to me, the ticket order had the full name of my food preparer. That told me right away that Butter Funk wants you to give them credit for their food and will hold people accountable if it's not on point. Therefore, let me give credit to my server A. Johnson, who made my day with this 2 piece catfish, fried to perfection! Seasoning - just enough and not too salty. Crispy and golden fried to just the right crispyness. Plus, the filets were HUGE. They didn't cheap me by splitting a filet into 2 pieces and selling it as one. These were some for REAL filets!!! Greens were oh so flavorful and not overcooked. I don't like a bunch of meat in my greens, so a few pieces for flavor were adequate for me. Once more, the golden honey cornbread complimented my greens to perfection. I used it to sope the juice from the greens and eat every single bite. I'd agree with Keith that the macaroni and cheese is not the best, but it's not the worst I've had either. It's a little on the dry side. Smaller noodles would probably leave more creaminess and moisture in the pasta, but I promise you - it didn't get thrown away. It wasn't that bad. All in all, BFK is the real deal when it comes to confort food. I would certainly come back and get their catfish any day of the week. Great to see a small family owned business getting the attention and business they deserve.

Yelp
The setting is cool vibe. They always have music videos playing in middle tv. Sports on others. Food is good, flavors normally on point. The fried foods are done the best to me. My issues: Everything is served in a Togo box. When I dine in and pay 60 bucks for it, I'd like it served on a plate. When something is fried and closed up it gets soggy. Another issue with this is wings and waffles today. The waffles are in a concave hole in a Togo box while I'm dinning in. Try cutting waffles in a hole, it's not easy. You can try the top of the box but it is one easy to cut through, and it already has holes in it for syrup to come out of. At least an option to have food plated would be nice for dine in. My only food issue is the grits. I will preface this with I am not a savory grits man. I do not like shrimp and grits, cheese and grits, or anything in my grits but butter and sugar. There is something in these grits. The server claims the grits are not cheese grits. If that's not cheese, these are flat out the worst plain grits I've ever had. They would've done a better job with some instant grits packs. I don't know what's in there, my girl (who likes savory grits) says it taste like there is something in them too. However she said they'd be good for shrimp and grits so took them home with us. I would say if you're into sweet grits pass em up. You like savory may be for you. Thumbs down for me. Still we will return. Hopefully I can get a plate for my meal lol .

Yelp
Decided to hit a yelp reviewed place to eat and it did not disappoint. The place is clean and comfortable. Our order was taken with patience as we had to ask lots of questions. We had a two piece fried chicken! Holy cow their chicken was amazing. Loved the red beans and rice. Just enough spice but not hot. Also had the garlic shrimp pasta. Creamy Alfredo sauce with a generous amount of grilled shrimp. We may not be back since our Houston. Is it was a one time deal but we'll always remember Butter Funk! Thanks!

Pamela L.

Yelp
The food was ok, nothing special. The mac and cheese seemed to be Kraft and greens had little to no seasoning. The baked chicken was like any others, just okay. I'm glad that I finally got to try so that I won't worry my brain about it any more. No I will not be back.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I stopped in here before we went to Fete Studio for paint date night. He raved about how delicious the brunch was and wanted me to try them out, so we came for a late lunch. I ordered the fried chicken, and he ordered the fried pork chop. His pork chop was perfectly seasoned and fried, and I loved his dirty rice. The Mac and cheese could have been seasoned better, and my boyfriend suggested they bake it! The fried chicken was good, but even better with hot sauce. I enjoyed the red beans and rice, and the greens could have used a little more seasoning. Overall great service and experience I will come back and try the pasta!

Yelp
My family raves about this place so I had to try. The wings were really good including the batter! The Mac n cheese is okay - wouldn't order again. The sidecar was okay. The Hennessy daiquiri is off the chain. The Jell-O shots tasted like koolaid. The Boudain egg rolls are bomb! The customer service was great. It's small and can get packed at times but be patient...it's worth the wait. Definitely will be back to try other items.

Yelp
This is my first time here. I ordered the catfish meal with two sides. The sides I got were mashed potatoes and gumbo. The catfish was very flavorful and seasoned. I enjoyed it. The mashed potatoes were homemade and fresh. I also enjoyed that and the gumbo was very good. I also got hot mixed with lemon pepper chicken wings, which I thought were great. For my side I received the red beans and rice. I didn't care for it too much but Other people had it and really enjoyed it. So it would be fair for me to say that I am just not a person. I would skip the mac & cheese. It didn't have much flavor to me. Their entrées are very flavorful. I also really like their spiked slushy. I ordered the green apple and I loved it. I would give it a 10 out of 10. I plan to come back to get another one.

Yelp
Stopped by Butter Funk Kitchen on a whim while I was in that area after Keith Lee's recommendation and it was so good! There isn't a ton of parking but that's ok. The food is made fresh, so it can take a little while to come out.

Yelp
I can't say how good and seasoned this food is enough. No words!!! So good and it comes out hot. You know it's made to order. And you know those daiquiris have a little something in them. The crown apple was really good.

Yelp
Butter Funk Kitchen is one of those neighborhood hidden gems which deserves a bigger following. I knew about Butter Funk before Keith Lee's visit, but his positive endorsement was the catalyst that inspired me to pay this restaurant a visit. The service here is great and the front of house staff are both attentive and kind. Very warm spirited atmosphere. Regarding ambience on the sonic front, where else can you go during the holidays and hear The Temptations' "Silent Night"? And the wall decorations are intriguing. I really liked the display of album covers and the red wall as a backdrop is unique. Outside, the signage with the melting butter looks really cool. Regarding the culinary offerings, I'm still stuck on the fried catfish (5/5), which is so delicious and has a great flavor. I've been here twice and ordered catfish both times. The red beans and rice (3/5) could use more seasoning and sausage, like Keith Lee stated. The greens (4/5) were good both times, but the latest order was overstuffed with what I'm guessing was turkey leg meat. I tend to prefer baked mac and cheese, so almost everyone in Houston makes it wrong in my opinion (Haha!), and I tend to think Butter Funk's mac is just an afterthought for the chef. But I do love the cornbread here. Definitely looking forward to trying other items on the menu.

Yelp
Came upon this place by accident. Best accident ever. The food is seasoned perfectly. The shrimp was tender yet crispy. The okra was even the fries were good.

Yelp
I was looking for a restaurant to take my dad for his birthday. I started my research and decided to go with a soul food type place that had Catfish, because that's my dad's favorite. I found a few places and read reviews and looked at photos and decided on this place. The parking is very limited because it shares parking with a barbershop and a few other places. I saw a car leaving and waited on them to get a parking spot. There were 5 of us. As soon as we walked in, it was a vibe. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Our waitress was named KK. She was a doll! She was very friendly and helpful when we asked questions about the food. She was prompt on taking the orders and checking on us. I ordered the 2 Catfish(1 grilled, 1 fried) with 2 sides. I chose the Redbeans and Greens for my sides. My dad got the Grilled Catfish with Fried Okra and Mac n Cheese. My daughter got a Fish and Shrimp Basket with Mashed potatoes and Etoufee. My niece got Sweet Chili Wings and Mac n Cheese. My cousin got The Shrimp Burgers for her and her bf and also ordered Fried Pork Chops for my aunt. Everything came out hot which is a #1 for me. My Fish was seasoned well and very tasty. The Beans and Greens were just ok to me. I cook both dishes, so I guess that I compare all foods to mine and my standards. The Okra was Crispy and hot. I kept stealing my dad's. The Mac N Cheese was good also. We all agreed that The Etoufee was a bit bland and needed more spice and seasoning. My niece enjoyed her wings. My cousin and daughter were fighting over the dessert because KK said that there might only be one Peach Cobbler left. I don't remember who won that battle. I will definitely come back to this restaurant. I want to try their Nachos and their frozen daquiris.

Yelp
Food was Hot flavorful and didn't take forever to come out. The cornbread perfect. MacNcheese Perfect pork chops are my favorite and I don't eat pork chops outside of this place. All I request is to bring some yams to the menu!! God bless

Yelp
The place is very small , don't order the turkey necks !! They are small and the rest of the food was good ! But it's hard to get anybody's attention you literally have to hunt someone down for service because everyone is so busy and it's small and packed! But the drinks are always good ! And the happy hour is the best.

Yelp
Let's do this short one. Went almost immediately after Influencer Kieth Lee's review before the onslaught. The place is in a shopping strip with a small parking lot. (More parking in back, not much) like the ambiance and although staff looked a bit frazzled, the crew was cordial. (Mind you the review dropped and was there within a minutes after dropping. See we were already out) The haul: Fried Catfish Plate with greens and Brussel Sprouts, Fried Pork Chop with Mac and Cheese and mashed potatoes, red beans/w meat and rice and Kool-Ade. The food is ok. A bit salty, tho. Red beans and rice were great, salty, but great. Like the meat they added to the side dish. The Fried Catfish + 2 Sides has flavor. Fish was not fried hard enough for my liking. Salty but still good. Brussels Sprouts has a Parmesan surprise! Good combo for that. Greens wasn't flavorful enough then added hot sauce and it was too salty. The Fried or Baked Pork Chop + 2 Sides with basic Mac and Cheese and great mash was about the same. Now the cornbread was sweet but I question who made it(Not used to my cornbread moist from sweating). Overall: To me it needs a cajun profile. More spice. I would eat here again because it's still good comfort food.

Yelp
I been trying to get here for a minute and then Keith Lee came and made the spot busier than ever. So I waited for it to calm down to make it that way. We went Sunday after church and we were the only ones there surprisingly. Our hostess was really nice but I didn't get her name. The side car was really strong. The fish and shrimp were soooo good. The Mac was good too. The greens were alright. The cornbread was awesome. My friend had the grits and shrimp. The shrimp was great..grits watery. Overall good experience

Yelp
The food is good AF!! Omg It's like eating at your aunt Patty house and the other guest feel like cousins. They serve the food fast and inside take away containers They have TVs and frozen drinks that remind me of Fat Tuesday

Yelp
This restaurant has become a favorite because of the friendly staff and owner. I'm always greeted with smiles and friendliness whether ordering over the phone or dining in. Though it's a small quaint restaurant the bar is full, well kept ,clean. Sometime I can just listen to good music or have game day on their 3 TVs. Lastly, I've never complained or had a mistake on my order. The specials have range from southern seafood, soul food and modern American. The prices are always affordable. I'm a regular now!

Yelp
I am way late to posting this review, but after I saw the influencer guy hit this place up, I wanted to make sure I came to echo his praises because they are well deserved and I love seeing little spots like this succeed! I stopped by here on the way home one night after searching for something serving some homestyle food. I am originally from South Louisiana, so I'm always a little cautious of "soul food" in other areas because I have been disappointed before. I was not disappointed here! We got a catfish plate with fries and shrimp with okra along with a side of crawfish etouffee and peach cobbler. It's in a small shopping strip. Since I went at night, parking was no issue, but during the day I could see it being a little crowded to maneuver around the small parking lot. A lady came to the counter immediately to take my order, very sweet. When she told me they also serve southern sweet tea and kool-aid I knew the food was going to be good. I haven't been offered kool-aid since I lived back home! Food came out quick and it was PIPING HOT. I mean too hot to even sneak a bite on the way home. I live about 15 minutes away and it was still plenty hot when I got home to eat. The catfish was a thicker cut than I prefer, which is not a criticism just a piece of info for people who may like the thin and crispy style rather than the thick cut filets. Everyone has a preference but I will say the fish was seasoned and cooked perfectly. No mushy half raw insides here. Fries were seasoned too! The shrimp was perfectly cooked and seasoned, not rubbery, okra as well. My favorite (and unfortunately forgot to take a photo of) was the etouffee. Thick, flavorful, rice was cooked well. I will absolutely get that again. The peach cobbler...yall that whole to go box was FULL of that dessert! I ate on that for an entire day They also had daiquiri machines and although didn't try them, there was a customer in there sampling some while I waited for my order and she was singing their praises. May try one next time I go. Looking forward to trying other items on the menu and seeing the continued success of this small, local business :-)

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch. I ordered the Fried Catfish entree which came with cornbread and two sides. I chose red beans and rice as well as Mac and cheese. My drink was a can coke over ice. I received two big ol fried catfish filets, they tasted great. The catfish was well seasoned and fried to perfection with a slight crunch, which I like. The mac and cheese was a 10/10 nice consistency. Thick and cheese, it gave a smoke Gouda cheese taste. Red beans and rice was on point. Well seasoned and this is the only restaurant I been to in a while that actually add sausage and pork in the beans. That's a bonus for me babbyyyyy. All in all I enjoyed the food and the environment. The establishment was clean and peaceful. Allowed me to capture my thoughts and enjoy lunch after a rough start to my day. Who ever Kinfolk in that kitchen throwing down like this, need to invite me over for all the holidays, ya hear me!!! Thank you!!!!
google avatar

Crystal T.

Yelp
It's a small, quaint place. The food that I had was great which was the fried pork chop in the catfish. I got the fries, but the fries were basic fries. They had good seasoning on them but they were cooked extremely hard. The gumbo didn't have a good base. I went early and everything wasn't cooked yet. I understand now reviewed by Lee and of course we are going to have to be patient so they can get up to speed but when I went, it was before he went, and I pretty much had the same experience and critiques. The cornbread is cake bread, and I love it.
google avatar

Htown S.

Yelp
It's Father's Day and they have a great specials. I got the pork chops with 2 sides. They also had shrimp and chicken as options. I got greens and mac and cheese for sides. All for $12! My intention was to take it home but the sides didn't make it and I only had one pork chop left to eat later. I thght abt going back and getting a redo but with chicken next time. Greens were good with a bit of spice. The mac and cheese was delicious, not soupy or saucy. Cornbread was the surprise. It's a sweet cornbread with familiar flavoring. The pork chop was nicely seasoned and tender. Sometimes restaurants will get a cheaper piece of meat but this was just enough fat and lean. Thicker cut. The crust was just right to complement the meat. They have a nice selection of daiquiris. I got the mango and it was on point. You can tell a place has good food/drinks if there is a steady flow of people coming in for to go or to eat in. This is one of those spots. Overall I def will be back.

Dawn M.

Yelp
I ordered from The brunch menu. I had the shrimp and grits. It was delicious! This was my first here, but it won't be my last. The customer service was great and the ambiance was as well!
google avatar

Ashlea G.

Yelp
BEST FRIED PORK CHOP EVER! The food took me back to my childhood. I had mac and cheese and greens on the side. Service was quick. I got it via Uber Eats so I can't talk about the ambiance. I was so happy with this meal. Yaaaaaas!!
google avatar

Tonya B.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and the food has been consistently good, seasoned just right, and great portions. The service has also been consistently good so that's a plus plus for me. It's kind of small inside so you may consider take out if you don't like to be crowded.
google avatar

Gail F.

Yelp
Service was ok. Waited 30 minutes for "made to order". Fried chicken. Bland. Tasted old. And tasted like church's chicken. Mac and cheese bland. Red beans & rice. Was ok with cornbread. Won't be back
google avatar

Bernard H.

Yelp
It was great! The wait was a little long. However, it was worth the wait. It was still warm when I got home. I and my fiancé got the chicken and waffles, oxtails with 2 sides , lemon cake, and shrimp egg rolls. Everything was great. They need more space.

Travis J.

Yelp
The fried fish was excellent. Highly recommend. Nice and crispy. French fries well seasoned.
google avatar

Cristina E.

Yelp
The location is in an up and coming neighborhood with ample parking in the rear. The restaurant is pretty small so done in is a challenge. The drinks are as sweet as the staff . I prefer my daiquiri's sweet, so it's a win for me. The food could use more flavor and less salt. The fried fish is honestly great. The buffalo wings are a bit to salty for me, but the boudin egg rolls were good. The shrimp has a good batter, but it is on the salty end as well. The gumbo is not a gumbo...it does taste like etouffee and the roux is the wrong color. The cornbread was so sweet and delish.

Yvette E.

Yelp
Service was top tier. Food was delicious. 10 of 10 recommend. Place was very clean and welcoming.

Michal B.

Yelp
Service was amazing! Best collard greens I've had in a long time. Overall very great restaurant
google avatar

Nitzaira A.

Yelp
Fried catfish was crispy and soft. Philly eggrolls was more of hamburger meat than steak. Brussel sprouts could use a bit more seasoning as well as the catfish. Mac and cheese had no flavor. Cornbread was a little dry. Overall 6/10. Great customer service though!
google avatar

Rhonda C.

Yelp
Great lunch time stop. Good food, excellent customer service. Exceptional tasting etouffee, surely will return.

Tonya G.

Yelp
Tried BFK yesterday and it was okay. We ordered the pork chop plate with dirty rice and red beans, the catfish plate with mac and cheese and greens, boudin egg rolls and a daiquiri.. Both pork chops and catfish were a bit salty. All the sides were meh but the greens were pretty good! Daiquiris were so-so and while the boudin egg rolls were good, it didn't taste like boudin . Also, acknowledgement goes a long way. Glad to support but don't think we will be returning.
google avatar

Krystal U.

Yelp
Parking is tricky because they're in a small parking but don't let this deter you! The food did not disappoint. We tried the etoufee, catfish, pork chops (not pictured here) and the boudin egg rolls. All of it was amazing and come out hot! the customer service was good too and the waitress made great recommendations on their daiquiris. It's a small restaurant so seating is limited but service was fast and I really enjoyed everything. It was reasonably priced too. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Best Soul food spot in Houston and the happy hour is FIRE I bring my friends here and they keep coming back for more they deserve 5 stars

Yelp
Catfish , 2 sides : dirty rice & etoufee dressing. When I say gave me what my soul has been missing. The catfish was fried to perfection and the side complimented the plate as well as the place. This joint is one of those places you drive pass that you think might have some bomb food, CAUSE THEY DO .

Yelp
I believe the staff needs to go back and check the ingredients for the vegan cauliflower sandwich. The Hawaiian sweet roll bun is NOT vegan. It has eggs and milk in it, so it would be vegetarian. Though, it was marked vegan on the menu. That is very misleading and terrible for people with food allergies. The fries had more seasoning than the actual sandwich. The cauliflower was quite bland and pretty soft. The cauliflower wasn't fried hard enough. I'm pretty sure everything is fried together, so it wouldn't make it vegan neither. There was no spice to the cauliflower. It was tasteless. There weren't consistencies in portion size. My sister's catfish sandwich plate had way more fries than my cauliflower sandwich plate. With the red beans and rice plate, there wasn't enough rice. The little rice was drowning in the red beans soup. The red beans and rice was more of a loose soup, not thick. My dad didn't like it and my mum said it was okay. There's absolutely little to no parking too. The business flyers has the wrong number on it, but yet my mum and I was asked to promote their new business. There was no information about food deliveries. They serve alcohol during happy hour. The music is excruciatingly loud and there were a rambunctious group of people cursing up a storm very loudly too. The wait time was long, but my mum and I considered the food was cook to order.

Yelp
went there tonight, I complained the whole time! my wings could've used 5/10 more minutes and some SEASONING! I got the Mac which tasted like it had kraft sliced cheese in it! greens... blah! red beans and rice... dry! boudin egg roll, small with minimal boudin! catfish.... light, airy, crispy and could've used more seasoning! the shrimp were great!!!!! WILL NEVER RETURN!

Yelp
Customer service was not so welcoming. But I ordered the shrimp meal . The shrimp was hot , seasoned well and crispy. My sides were cold .

Yelp
Excellent service. The food was fresh and very tasty. I had the fried pork chops, greens and mac and cheese. Everything was seasoned to perfection! Only downside is the parking. Went on Monday afternoon and it was packed.

Yelp
The category is: Hidden Gems. I learned of BFK exactly 1.5hrs before I stepped foot inside, despite traveling Scott a dozen times over the last few months since the 288 exit is closed on 610. Maybe I missed it because I'm too busy cosplaying a Fast & Furious extra as I weave in and out of the cruising septuagenarians that populate the area. Who knows? The point is that I not only learned of this place on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, but I got to eat there as well. It's a small restaurant tucked at the end of a strip of businesses at the corner of Scott and Bellfort. The decor immediately sucked me in, the array of mirrors and vintage-style artwork living up to the Funk in the name. The menu is small so it didn't take long to order and I was pleased to realize that my food was being cooked fresh. What I had is listed below. (Sidenote: I couldn't check in because BFK was reported as closed on Yelp) 1) Fried catfish. Fried hard and seasoned so perfectly. You ever take a bite of something and then have to just sit there and ponder on the wonder dancing across your tastebuds?? That was me with this fish! The plate only comes with one piece of fish but it is a BIG piece. I couldn't even finish it, but believe me, I tried! 2) Mashed potatoes. Sooooo good! Creamy and well seasoned with chunks of potato and bits of peel woven throughout to let you know it is scratch-made. I have no complaints and would buy that in a quart size for sure! 3) Brussels sprouts. These were whole, not halves or slivers. I know what you're thinking "How that work, friend?" Peaches of BFK made it werk honey! The outside was crispy and seasoned down while the inside was almost buttery with its tenderness. I was incredibly shocked but equally pleased. 4) Lemon Drop. I'm not sure if that's the actual name but I had the yellow frozen drink. It was gooDT! Made with real likka! I also sampled the Green Apple and the Hurricane, and both were legit. Everything was great, Peaches was sweet and helpful, and I'll be back!

Yelp
Let's start from the top of what I've noticed, they let underage kids make your alcoholic beverages, unless the looks are deceiving. I was watching from the bar, the cooks and some of the I'm guessing baggers or servers, pick off the food presumed for the customers, and consume. I was there for a good hour and a half seeing what I assume a few of the employees getting drinks every now and then. They're under the influence while preparing orders. There was a bald guy that would come in and out of the establishment making himself drinks and leaving out to his vehicle to then come back check everything out, and leave again. I'm guessing he was the manager from the amount of times he was observing. All together wasn't a really good experience. My food was cold when it came out, I had fried catfish with red beans and rice and greens. I'd rather eat at Golden Corral.

Yelp
I love the Fish and Shrimp bash here. We stopped here during our trip to grab a bite to eat. Fish was really good with a spice to with french fries and a drink. I like the place and the food. Workers were friendly. Id be willing to stop by again.

Yelp
This is an update to my review on 9/4/21. This experience was not stellar. I went with family to the restaurant on 9/14/22. We placed 2 to-go fish dinner orders over the phone. One dinner was with Mac n cheese and greens and the other was was brussel sprouts and dirty rice. The fish was delicious, cooked and seasoned well. However, the side dishes were disappointing. The dirty rice was too salty, the brussel sprouts were hard, not cooked enough, and the Mac n cheese was dry and bland. We have had some of the sides before so we were surprised at the taste on yesterday. We were really taken back by the 20% gratuity charge on the bill. We had dropped a tip in the jar, not realizing that gratuity would be automatically charged to our bill. There should be a statement at the counter, on the online menus, and on the establishment menu board. It's unreasonable to automatically charge customers without them knowing. We came to support a local, black owned, eatery, and we wish the experience would've been better.

Yelp
One of the best I've been to. The food is fresh and seasoned to perfection. I travel quite a ways to come here and it is always delicious. The staff is very friendly. I had been here before but it was under a different management and don't remember the name but. Who won't remember the name Butter Funk. Try it, you'll like it.

Yelp
their food is good, but that apple crown daiquiri is the bombdotcom! the food is fresh and definitely worth returning for!
