The 17 Best Affordable Sushi Restaurants In Chicago

"Go to Butterfly when your college friends are visiting from out of town and you need an upbeat BYOB spot. There are three locations, all in the West Town/West Loop area, and all of them serve tasty rolls and decent Thai food. This is good for Gina, who doesn’t actually like sushi but likes vodka sodas." - sam faye, adrian kane, john ringor

When we walked in, there was a server that greeted us with a genuine smile & had us seated immediately. Tables were clean, server was very polite, and overall atmosphere was amazing. Food was DELICIOUS! This place is better than other sushi restaurants I’ve been to and will definitely be my go to place from now on. Also they’re strawberry smoothie is made with real strawberries, so ide definitely recommend it

Google
The sushi here is absolutely delicious! The variety is impressive, with something for everyone—even options without fish, which I really appreciate. Parking can be a bit of a challenge, but trust me, it’s totally worth it. Every time I come, I treat myself and indulge—it never disappoints!

Went for the chicago restaurant week. It was great. Shrimp in a blanket was crispy and flavorful. The curry had the right amount of spice... nose drip. Thai tea was refreshing. Godzilla roll was fun to eat.

Google
Food is delicious! Presentation is absolutely amazing! The staff is kind and portions are huge! Definitely worth a visit!

Google
This place is incredible! Excellent sushi, quick, and the customer service was above and beyond my expectations. I will definitely have to come back!

Google
I came to this establishment just for a quick lunch (when that sushi craving hits, it hits) and boy was I surprised. For such a small restaraunt, this spot is missing nothing in elegance. The music is gentle and at a reasonable volume, the decor is gorgeous and moody, and the natural lighting from the large windows is very pleasant. For a quiet Friday afternoon, my server (Gigi, I think) was attentive but not overbearing. In fact, she was very sweet. The food was all amazing. Everything was very reasonably priced for the quality and the presentation was very cute and instagram-able. I was worried about ordering the lychee on ice for my dessert as lychee can be a bit hit or miss but this one was a hit! It was fresh and sweet. On top of all of this, I spent maybe 30-40 minutes here and only because I was relaxing a bit after eating. Service was extremely quick. I will definitely be spending a lot of time here on my Friday lunch breaks!

Google
Tl;dr: food is above average and comes out fast, the service is quick! Depending on the time, parking can be challenging. You’re quickly greeted and sit down shortly after. The staff is quick and attentive which makes for excellent service! The food is above average but not the best sushi (not even in Chicago). The restaurant decor and feel is also above average but there are nicer places for this price. Over all, there are other sushi restaurants that would be first choice contenders and recommend this only to try after those have been exhausted.

Google
This place was a pleasant surprise actually! First of all we didn’t expect it to be this crowded (granted it was a Friday night) given their location. But we reserved by calling and managed to get a table pretty quickly. We ordered the spicy shrimp roll, spider roll, fire dragon maki, samurai, the rock and a couple of others which I don’t remember. They were pretty good overall, the spicy shrimp and spider were really good! Although we did not like the fact that they took an hour to bring out our first order.. And the other rolls were alright, but maybe things taste better when you’re super hungry? Either way, it was good and satisfied our sushi cravings.

Yelp
My friend is the son of the owner, it was really delicious Everything was quick and service was great

Yelp
I have wanted to come to Butterfly for about 15 years and for some reason have never made it...shame on me! Its about a 20 min walk from where I live and I figured the time is now!!!! lol Stopped in recently for an early dinner with a friend who also had never been...around 5:30pm. Plenty of available seating so we had no issues there. We had a really nice server as she always came at the right time...I believe her name is Pocky. Started out with the lycheetini which was so damn good, I threw back 2 of them during dinner...like these were really damn good! We went with a summer roll, spicy tuna roll, hamachi sashimi and scallop sashimi. All of it was delicious except the scallop...wasnt really feeling that one. By the time we finished dinner, the place was pretty packed so its still a popular spot for the raw! I plan to make more trips since it so close!

Yelp
Sushi and ambiance are solid here. The place is usually crowded, so be sure to get there early. The sushi always comes out with a good looking presentation. They also have some good Thai options. Staff is very nice and attentive.

Yelp
Decent sushi for the neighborhood. However, prices have seriously gone up; $11 for a basic California roll is a but much and a $6 delivery fee is ridiculous. Butterfly: you're pricing me out. Take your food to the next level or reduce your prices.

Yelp
I love this spot. The sushi is always yummy and you can't go wrong with any of their food offerings. The serving is fast and efficient and the ambiance is casual. It's a great spot to take dates or after work. I always try to grab sushi here when I'm in town...I got the tempura udon noodles soup that is absolutely delicious and perfect when you're not feeling well...along with shrimp pot stickers...my tummy is happy

Yelp
I feel like they're the same owners as Sumu but with Thai food options instead of ramen. The rolls and dessert options were the same. One difference could be the size but I think it depends on the person who prepares it. Service was fine. Their AC is definitely on.

Yelp
Decided to try this restaurant for restaurant week. We ended up ordering off of the regular menu. DELICIOUS! Crab Rangoons: probably the best I've ever had. They were very large, crispy, hot, flavor was delicious. My entire table loved them! Already planning my trip back. Pad See Ewe: also very very good entree. Huge portion size. It could use more of a spicy. We added their hot sauce, so so good! Food came out quickly and hot, staff were friendly. Highly recommend stopping in!

Yelp
We stopped here for a quick dinner with a friend and we loved everything about this place. The food was delicious and the waitress was very nice. We got a variety of plates; sushi, ramen, salad, and soup and they were all just fantastic. The atmosphere was nice and quiet. It is a small place but they did a great job making every inch count! And then we got dessert and man, that was the one dish we had to take a picture for - it was huge (we were really glad we only got 1 dessert) and it was DELICIOUS! We definitely be back here!

Yelp
My sushi was a work of art! Truly incredible how beautiful the presentations are! The space was brightly lit, welcoming and warm. I sat directly across from the sushi bar and enjoyed watching the chefs work. I ordered the samurai roll, red dragon roll, and crab rangoons. Everything was delicious! My server was nice and attentive. She definitely judged me for the amount of food I ate though haha! All in all, great sushi find for my quick trip to Chicago!

Yelp
My experience at Butterfly was fantastic! Everything we ordered was vegetarian, and it was all incredibly flavorful. The service was phenomenal, and I highly recommend making a reservation, as it can get very busy on weekdays and weekends. We tried the Drunken Noodles, Penang Curry, Fire Dragon Roll Sushi, and Edamame, and everything was delicious with no complaints. It was my first time trying Thai food, and both the Drunken Noodles and the Penang Curry were phenomenal--I would definitely go back for them.

Yelp
This is not BYOB. Sushi was fine, not uniquely impressive enough to rave about. Artwork on the plate was fun, I'm not a big sauce person so I did try it. Noting noteworthy, would return if someone wanted to but wouldn't seek it out.

Yelp
Bummed it wasn't better. Cute ambiance and staff was friendly. The food was all just ok.

Yelp
This is my favorite sushi place in the city- hands down but they are SOOOO rude. I have been coming here for years and it (taste wise) is better than any other sushi. Every single time you come in they are rude and rush you. They also never have their hours listed accurately on their website. Today I went in to have dinner at like 8:50 knowing they were supposed to close at 10. Their yelp and website both listed 10. I went in and asked for a table and they said we must be done eating at 9:30. I mentioned that their hours were wrong if that was the case and they said oh well. It's so unfortunate that their customer service sucks because this sushi cannot be replicated elsewhere. We went to the sushi place access the street instead and it was not good and very overpriced. Sad day all around for sushi. Looks like I won't be able to get it for awhile unless I want to come here and be treated like garbage. If you do choose to ignore all of the above get the summer rolls with extra cilantro and curry fried rice with chicken.
google avatar

Alexander D.

Yelp
Tee ended up stumbling upon this place when we experienced a long wait at another for restaurant week. While I do not think that their Restaurant week menu had the value ... their regular priced menu was amazing. We enjoyed some of the best crab Rangoon with such a fresh batter and texture. We also enjoyed healthy serving sizes that we ended up taking home with us. Their rice and noodles were phenomenal and the intimacy of the restaurant was a beautiful touch. I highly recommend checking them out!

Yelp
Food was soooooo good! The servers were very kind and gave fast service. Perfect date spot with low ambient lighting. Would definitely return :D

Yelp
Hasn't been to a Butterfly Sushi in at least a decade. This restaurant has been a fantastic mainstay for years & years. Food is solid, service is great!
google avatar

Yelp
Takeout review: Food was prepared in a very timely manner. It was fresh. Crunchy shrimp roll was maybe the best mako roll I've ever had Crab Rangoons were crispy and delicious Curry fried rice is good, but it's AMAZING when you add some spice to it. Butterfly gave us a small container of red spicy sauce and it was a perfect addition to the rice. Looking forward to dining in for our next experience
google avatar

Kitty B.

Yelp
Presentation was gorgeous! Not as impressed with the food itself, apart from the crab rangoons which were fantastic! The edamame was only salted on the top one or two, and halfway through a sushi roll it's as off they accidentally switched avocado for jalapeno, it wasn't supposed to have any spice on the roll but gosh, the last half I had to stop eating because it was terribly spicy. The presentation was fun!
google avatar

Mariya Strikovski S.

Yelp
I have been ordering from this location for years. Value proposition type of a place - nothing extra ordinary yet used to be good quality. Last three orders ( sushi or cooked entries) were off. Sushi was fishy and not fresh, rice used on rolls was way too warm and mushy- disgusting. All of the cooked dishes are either lacking protein or sauce - one can tell the establishment is cutting costs however they did raise prices multiple times over last year or two. Which is fine - but the quality is just no longer there. Cafeteria style food quality ...
google avatar

Tamika G.

Yelp
Food, ambience and service was excellent! After trying for my first time a I came back the next day and ordered takeout. Both experienced was great. Sushi was delicious and I really enjoyed the presentation. I WILL be back.
google avatar

Karan H.

Yelp
Honestly, I was so happy to visit and find the same quality food that I tasted back in 2014. Great sushi and very impressive presentation. It's honestly way over the top which is really fun especially if you have a date. Delicious desserts too! Very impressed with the selection and variety in the menu. Hostess was super attentive and dropped by multiple times to make sure we had everything. 100% will be back! Ps: fantastic spot for date night. Everything is over the top here but very well priced + ambience is really well done!

Yelp
My favorite Thai place in the city. The sushi and the Thai food are delicious. The portions are great. My favorite dishes are the drunken noodles and the yellow Thai curry with tofu. Huge menu!! Drinks are also great and strong.

Yelp
Decided to stop by this place after seeing it many times. We walked in and were immediately told they were closing in 40 minutes and that if we wanted to eat there we would have to choose what we wanted and pay at the register before sitting down. We were very taken back and found it weird as there were many individuals seated with menus. We ordered what we wanted, payed and sat down. We did not receive our water or drinks until they rushed all of our food to the table in one go. We felt VERY uncomfortable, not welcomed and rushed that we ended up asking for to go boxes and left. All in all we were there for less than 15 minutes. I would not recommend this place for a late night food stop if you wanted to be treated like you are not welcomed. If I could give 0 stars I would.

Yelp
Great food, reliable service. We have been going here consistently for about 10 years. It is our go to sushi and Thai place. Highly recommend the pad see ew, panang curry or noodles, and spinach pot stickers.

Marlena S.

Yelp
Food is amazing! The way it's served it works on all your senses. Very nice and cozy place. One of the best sushi places I've been to. Highly recommended!

Yelp
My sister and I went here after being in Chicago 2 days and not having any really good food and this sushi was a blessing. I don't even remember the names of the rolls we got but they were all good. We ate everything, cleaned the plates. The flavors and sauces were good, my sister usually dips everything in spicy mayo but she barely used it because the sushi already had good flavor and sauce. We got there close to closing but they still seated and served us and didn't rush us. Pictured is one plate with 3 rolls. We ordered 5 rolls total. Also from pic you can see the lighting is very dim in there. Dark and lowkey but still casual vibe.

Christina L.

Yelp
First time coming and definitely will come back! First, the restaurant is adorable, both inside and out. Second, the service was great and quick! Last but not least, the food was so good! The presentation was amazing also as you can see by the pictures. Beautiful plating. Overall, 10/10!!
google avatar

Maitri S.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite sushi place in the city! However, they have recently changed the menu and only have a limited number of vegetarian rolls available. But you can sub out in great and make your own veggie specialty roll. Overall, the sushi was still good. The panang curry from here has disappointed my multiple times. We asked for it to be spicy and it came out pretty sweet and had an "eggy" after taste to it. Would not order again. Hopefully their noodles are better.
google avatar

Carolina C.

Yelp
I walked in with no reservation and they found our group of 6 a table really quickly and they were super accommodating. It's a very beautiful restaurant and the staff was very attentive. The sushi rolls were super creative and fun, and the presentation was absolutely stunning. The 911 Maki was the right amount of spice without taking over the flavor of the roll. However, the table all ordered similar rolls and they came out at different times, with the last one coming out 15 minutes after the first roll was put down.
google avatar

Dan K.

Yelp
So I've gone once in the restaurant and also have ordered out. This place is legit. I think they mostly have Thai and sushi. Their sashimi typically have some great cuts. And they have some cute decor, even on the plates. They had a radish with some light which gave a pretty cool vibe. I usually only order the sushi but the appies are good and I've heard great things about the curry. Definitely check it out

Emma N.

Yelp
It's a good experience. I went to eat sushi at Butterfly. The ingredients were good and the decorations were unique. Excellent management and Friendly staff And I ordered takeout for my cousin. Excellent!!!

Joe H.

Yelp
Everytime I visit Chicago I stop by this restaurant. Service is always so fast, and the roll selection is amazing. Cannot go wrong here.
google avatar

Kimberly L.

Yelp
Butterfly is our go to for carry out! You really can't go wrong, I can't make one thing I've gotten that I would not order again. Our usual is a 911 roll, BBQ fried rice, pad see ewe then we like the calamari or crab ragoon. I've tried other noodle dishes and most recently did the pagnang curry, all amazing. Both sushi and Thai part of the menu hit the spot!
google avatar

Autumn B.

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot for sushi. I feel super lucky to be able to walk over here and pickup anytime-- we have also dined there and the presentation was crazy cool! The service is fast whether you dine in or take away. All the sushi is great and tastes fresh. I will say that we have tried a few of their Thai inspired entrées and they were all bland and very underwhelming, so we will only be sticking to their sushi as that is their strength. Definitely give this spot a try if you're in the west town area!
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
I'll give this an extra star because my party was a walk in and they accommodated us immediately! Friendly staff and attentive. The restaurant itself is very cute and the food was pretty good. We had a variety of things - 911 sushi (wasn't really very spicy), edamame, fried gyoza, calamari. All good. Drinks were really good sized. Had some hot sake shots, lychee mojito, old fashioned, and mai tais. The presentation of the sushi was gorgeous. I'd come back!

Chad M.

Yelp
We went to Shutterfly for Thai, did not have sushi. The Tom Kha soup was prob the best I've ever had, super flavorful, nice balance of veggies and chicken. Spring rolls were crispy and on point. Pad Thai and teriyaki salmon were fantastic. Service was super fast, which was impt because we were in a lunch break. Will hit this place again!
google avatar

Fernando S.

Yelp
1 star! Our food did not taste well. We ordered the Salmon Avocado , Philli Maki and Sunset rolls. The rice was very sticky, tasted old and it was soggy on all 3 rolls. The shrimp tempura on the Sunset roll was not fresh and the crust soggy and the mango tasted old. We couldn't even finish our food, spent $48 , very disappointed and we live minutes from it, wish we could count on it. Not satisfied!!
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Not totally sure why this place has such great reviews... The presentation was pretty and that's about it. Way over priced for sushi that tastes like it's from a gas station- not fresh at all. There was also WAY too much cucumber in the rolls & I'm usually not picky. The service was good and I'd maybe go again to try their other food but not the sushi.
google avatar

Shriya S.

Yelp
The best place in Chicago to go for sushi and Thai food, hands down!!! It is always my go-to, and everything I have tried on the menu has been a banger! One of my favorite places to go if you're craving Asian food and are a vegetarian - it's so accommodating and amazing for those with dietary restrictions!! Located off Grand avenue, there is plenty of street parking available around. You walk in and are greeted where you then proceed to sit either at their outdoor seating or indoors. I ordered a starter as I waited for the other guests in my party to arrive - the tofu peanut. I would say this is the only part of my order that I felt was not worth the price, but if you're super hungry and need something to hold you over until the main course meals, then it's ok. It was served kebob style and was flavorful, just not worth $3. Whenever I come here, I always order one of the Thai curries. Especially in the Chicago winter here, their Thai curries are the best I've tried around and so comforting. This time around, however, I tried other items on the menu. We ordered the Spicy basil noodle with tofu, and the Godzilla roll vegetarian! I have always appreciated how the staff is upfront, honest, and reminds you of whatever dietary restrictions you may have. It's so easy to customize as well in case you were curious about a particular dish and wanted to modify. Wow - were these dishes delicious!!! They were both amazing, but my personal favorite was the sushi roll. It was flavorful, loaded with veggies, and topped with a sweet "eel" sauce (not actual eel!!) that made it perfect! If you are a flat noodle lover, then you will love the noodle dishes. The dish we ordered wasn't overly oily or slimy, had plenty of tofu and vegetables included, and was spicy on request! Perhaps my favorite part about this place would be the portion sizes. You get SO much food for the price you pay, and I hope that never changes about this place. All in all, an essay later, I HIGHLY recommend you at least try this place. One of my favorite restaurants in Chicago and I miss it when I'm out of town. But fair warning - you'll be addicted!!

Sushi C.

Yelp
I am a regular online order customer. However, I called to let them know there was something online that was not accurate as a courtesy. In return, I received old sushi and items missing in order. Extremely disappointed and disgusted. I will never order from there again!

Tyler M.

Yelp
Live in the neighborhood and have sadly watched this place go downhill , went there tonight , the tables were sticky , the bathrooms are dirty , the sushi came and the fish was very thinly sliced and warm (very warm possible make you sick room temp) , and covered in mayo . Cali rolls are 11$ and spicy tuna roll 11$ for a very simple roll that was subpar at best , for three rolls and a chicken catsu and two waters it was 63$ , sadly this will be the last time we go here .
google avatar

Chandrika R.

Yelp
My new favorite sushi place! This is also the perfect place to go for sushi when you have someone who doesn't like sushi bc they have lots of Thai food and grill (robata) options. The sashimi presentation was beautiful, and the thick slices were super fresh! The sunomono was ok, prob wouldn't order again. The grilled/robata eggplant was delicious! The Thai tea was standard and yummy, and a big portion. Unfortunately, they were out of the bacon wrapped mushrooms, so will hopefully have those next time! My server was adorably smiley and helpful despite being the only one for multiple tables. They had a ton of takeout orders at lunchtime on a Wednesday, but all the staff just worked their way through. Parking is a little tight, but shouldn't be hard if you're willing to walk a little. I'll def need a walk after all this yummy food!

Alisa B.

Yelp
Me and my family went to eat today. Everything was great and great atmosphere. The staff welcomed us with a smile. And recommended food to us. We ate Panang noodle, sushi combo, fried rice chicken and many other things. Food served quickly It's beautifully decorated and yes, they have cocktails and boba tea. I really like the Taro boba tea. It tastes great. The staff were caring and attentive even though the store was quite busy. It was a great experience.

Yelp
Sushi and Thai food?? Whatttt :O Our table of 6 came at around 7:30pm and there was a 15 mins wait. The waiting area is pretty tiny so we had to wait outside. Once seated, the server came and checked on us pretty promptly. He was very friendly and attentive throughout. We ended up ordering a bunch of rolls, Tom yum soups (shrimp and chicken), a Thai basil fried rice, and big pad Thai. The sushi were fresh and wow the presentation!!! Nothing to complain about there. I would recommend getting the sashimi and any of those rolls we ordered (pictured). Our Tom yum soups were really good and they didn't skimp out on the chicken. We wanted to order white rice to eat it with lol. The Thai basil fried rice however, was a disappointment. It was super wet?! As if they didn't fry it enough and it just came from the rice cooker. We couldn't finish the plate. The big pad Thai was more of a pad kee mao... now pad Thai flavor whatsoever. Based on the menu we thought it was a pad Thai with big noodles instead. Couldn't finish that either. We ordered a green tea latte and it came out more of a smoothie / blended drink. We also got a strawberry smoothie with extra boba (they charged $1 or something for the boba) but it didn't come with boba. So when we told them about it, they added like a tiny scoop. Not worth an extra $ for the extra boba. The drink was good though. Overall, hit on the sushi and Tom yum, miss on the Thai dishes.

Yelp
This place is BUSYYY! Definitely come here when you are not starving as you may have to wait lol. My friends and I came in hungry so that wasn't fun lol. So make sure you come early lol. But definitely worth the wait! My friends ordered all the sushi and omg all of them were amazing!!!!!! Will definitely recommend if you are in town and will be back again!!

Yelp
Butterfly truly pleases all - the restaurant has great fresh sushi options at decent prices, along with a whole thai menu for non-sushi lovers. There were so many items to choose from, so we got a whole spread. The sashimi was so fresh and thick, and the presentation was beautiful. The salad was a good portion too, with fresh veggies and delicious dressings. The shrimp pad thai was huge and tasty as well. Finally, the rolls were extravagant and amazing. This time around we got the Butterfly roll and sunshine maki. I believe the place might also be BYOB (but they serve alcohol as well), which is an extra plus!

Yelp
No stars. This was a stop after the blues fest for my birthday. So disappointed so many ways. Sushi was horrible. Too largs of pieces to even eat, no taste. Rice was sour. Fillings almost watery. We had a spider roll and salmon avocado. Avocado was from a frozen bag - not fresh. have had much better sushi even in a supermarket. .how do I describe the Pad Thai ..?. Take chicken and noodles and toss it with Sweet BaBy Rays bbq sauce. No peanuts even. Fried rice was soggy. Bill was $89

Yelp
We ordered Valentines dinner just before 6 pm this evening. They said it would take an hour. 7:15 we called and they said it would be here in 20 minutes. At 7:45 we called again and the phones are going to a busy signal. The food came 2 1/2 hours after ordering. That being said the did end up giving us a refund which I gave 3 stars. The food was still yummy but 2 1/2 hours after order.
