Butterworth's - Review - Capitol Hill - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"Butterworth's is an all-day cafe that can take you from a decent flat white in the morning to greasy frites and a glass of red in the evening. The vintage-feeling interior is a welcome contrast to some of DC’s more sterile coffee shops, and the Scottish Highlands-esque decor makes it a comfortable place to spend an afternoon at the bar or reading in a wingback chair. It all feels nice enough on weekday afternoons, when a young crowd taps away on laptops to low-volume jazz, but after 5pm the atmosphere pivots from a quiet café to the veritable it spot for the MAGA crowd. That vibe shift is noticeable, so do with that information what you will. photo credit: Nina Palazzolo photo credit: Nina Palazzolo photo credit: Nina Palazzolo Pause Unmute" - Madeline Weinfield

Service here is phenomenal. Prices are great. Had their bacon and waffles. Bacon is thicker cut and yummy, the waffle was kind of dry however. Needed more butter, more syrup, and more fluffiness. Love the atmosphere! Espresso in my latte was pretty tasty.

Had a delightful meal. Greeted by a super friendly host who graciously took my wife's coat. We then dined in the little window jet out. The atmosphere was calm and fun. The quirky furniture added to it all. The meal was absolutely delicious from start to finish with excellent wait staff.

Google
Butterworth’s nails it on all fronts—hospitality, cocktails, food, and ambiance. From the moment you walk in, the service is warm and welcoming, setting the tone for a top-notch experience. The cocktails are creative and skillfully made, and always a pleasure to sip. And the food? Absolutely delicious, French fine dining that doesn’t disappoint (unlike some other local spots… *cough*Le Di***cough*) One of the best things about Butterworth’s is the atmosphere. No obnoxious TVs blaring in the background—just a beautifully designed space where you can actually enjoy good conversation. Whether you’re grabbing a civilized cup of coffee or tea with a friend, sitting down for a meal, or unwinding with a cocktail, it’s the perfect spot. I’ve been here at least half a dozen times and already look forward to going back—and for good reason.

Literally steps away from the U.S. Capitol, Butterworth's transports you far from the Nation's Capital to Paris. With an antler chandelier, old picture frames on the walls, and hanging plants on shelves, the decor is impressively French. My friend and I sat at the bar for drinks only, but their food menu was tempting. (We'll be back.) To drink, they have classic cocktails like a French 75 with bubbly in it and a version of a sour. I found both refreshing, familiar, and inviting. Service was excellent, especially by Bart, who runs the show. He greeted us with a genuine smile and even asked us how we were doing (and he meant it). We'll be back!

Google
Would recommend to anyone!! The loveliest place, kindest staff, and the food is fantastic. Everything about the place speaks for itself, and each element creates the loveliest environment. We interacted predominantly with Bart and Dante who went above and beyond to make our experience enjoyable, in addition to the restaurant already being lovely. This is an unpaid advertisement and I’d do it a thousand times over. This restaurant is absolutely Butterworth-it!

Google
My wife and I found this lovely French style restaurant for lunch on their second day. Can't say enough about it. The food and coffee are excellent and service outstanding. Relaxed setting and great decor.

Google
Such a beautiful new restaurant on Capitol Hill! The staff are so friendly and the food is delicious. Nice casual atmosphere but really high quality dining.

Google
Great new cafe/bistro/restaurant/bar in Capitol Hill. Great food, excellent service, and impeccable vibes. Scratches the itch for a nineteenth century french salon that I didn’t know I had. The staff are incredibly kind and great at their jobs. They let me have order coffee and sit and do some work during their off hours between lunch and dinner. I cannot recommend this place more.

Yelp
French lamb, French fries. My stomach precedes me to heaven. Damn good food, the people, the same. Erase all doubt, this is the place.

Yelp
Stopped in for a drink with friends. The place was packed, and had a nice vibe. The crowd was young, 20s and 30s with a few older folks (like me and my friends). It was loud and it was hard to hear what others were saying. Still we had fun. The music was great (I commented that some of the music was older than most of the patron lol). We did not try any food but the drinks were great. I had a French 75 and loved it.

Yelp
Amazing Ambiance with a lot of details.. lovely drinks and services - Magi and calub- I stop by after dinner to have a drink but for sure will be back for food.. they have interesting menu though

Cookie S.

Yelp
The food is bland. Drinks were bland. Service was bland. Just bland and very unseasoned. Gross. They serve their fries with mayonnaise, I think that says enough. Plus side is they have a free circus show performance there daily. See pictures attached for example of the clown show.

Yelp
Butterworth's is a newer café and restaurant (as of last year) that opened in Capitol Hill. It's well decorated and the overall vibe inside is very intimate and nice. I came here for an early lunch with a friend and would be interested in coming back more for dinner as the restaurant seems to offer some interesting drinks. For lunch / breakfast, I tried their toasted oolong tea which came in a tea press. For $6.50, I was able to get 2-3 smaller cups of tea from it, which felt like a fair deal. The flavor was ok - it wasn't very intense, which I wondered if there were enough tea leaves or if it was intentionally a bit lighter. The smoked salmon toast was wonderful, and pretty traditional with its cream cheese and capers. The menu said it had kale but when I got mine, my order had carrots on top. I don't recall the server noting the substitute when I ordered, but it was really good regardless. Service was kind of slow, and we had trouble alerting someone to give us the check. However, everyone was very kind and polite!

Yelp
If you don't like Trump this is not the place for you. If you do, definitely check this out. Comfortable bar, good drinks, different but great food. Ran into one of the owners, Raheem Kassan and he was very conversational and friendly. As Capitol Hill watering holes go, this is one of the better, if not the best, choice.

Yelp
REAL TALK: I wanted to check out Butterworth's as I loved their little froggies on their pink website - HA! This place is a cafe, restaurant, and bar, nestled in the Capitol Hill 'hood. We came here for an early dinner, as their menu looked tasty. We ordered: +Focaccia - with roasted marrow; wasn't a fan of this +Sardines - with butter, petite radish, and lemon puree +Caviar Waffle - with whipped maple, lemon puree, and creme fraiche +Cassoulet Ravioli - prepared with consomme, duck confit, bodin noir, and breadcrumbs +a Tart Tatin - with pear onions, seared foie gras, and voilet mustard +a Wild Mushroom Beggars Purse - with bitter greens and tallegio +Rock Fish - with sprouting cauliflower, brioche, and tartar +and, Duck Fondu - with mimolette, brioche, and petite veggies The place is super cute, as I loved the wall decor and the 'splash'; service was friendly. I would like to try out their daytime menu, such as their toast options and the crepes. +cute interior +friendly service

Yelp
FABULOUS CAP HILL ADDITION!! The staff was soooo welcoming and patient as we had some vegans with us and LOTS of questions about the menu ! REAL CANDLES and dim lighting make for a great dinner ambiance. Our server was so honest about his favs and it was appreciated. Cabbage lamb roll up was so delicate and tender, fresh made buns a delight, HOME MADE BUTTER, one of the best pieces of salmon I've had in a long time- and a green salad made ad hoc that NEEDS to be on the menu. An excellent French 75 made with tequila, and finishing off with a FABULOUS warm pear cake ! Will be back for the ribeye and frites for sure !

Yelp
Butterworth's is a cozy English restaurant on Capitol Hill. First, the vibes are great. Delicate china, eclectic wallpaper, and comfy seating all help set the tone. The service was incredibly friendly and helpful. I have a gluten intolerance, and while they didn't have a ton of options for me, they were happy to accommodate giving me potato puree as a side in addition to the ratatouille. The ratatouille was deliciously rich - perfect for a freezing night in the city - and the potato puree was silky and luxurious. I also had one of their house cocktails with Mexican coke, fernet, and orange. Very good. The only reason I hesitate to give it 5 stars is that I wish the gluten-free options were a bit more extensive. So this is a 4.5/5 star review, rounded up!

Yelp
I have visited this restaurant twice since its opened. Its beautiful on the inside, I can imagine having a drink and eating here on a winter night, it is cozy and the food is presented beautifully. Unfortunately, both times my friend and I ate here, most of the food was tasteless - like it was missing salt or seasonings, and then there were several plates that were just terrible. The first time it happened, it should be considered an off night - shortly after it opened - but the second time we visited months later, and the same patterns emerged, then that's a concern. We ordered the beets with lebneh - but there was no lebneh- we chuckled that the name should have been just "beets on bread." We ordered a plate of white asparagus that was so stringy and inedible that I spat it into my napkin - I have never done that ever - and we mentioned it to the waiter, and he said "I know". The second time, the only tasty items were French fries and cauliflower - but those are not hard to mess up. Hopeful there are improvements now, but twice in several months was a problem. The first time we ordered an appetizer that showed up almost like it was described in the menu - but it wasn't the same thing - and having eaten at restaurants for years - - my friend and I knew it was a cobbled-together substitute, with unsalted butter that one uses for cooking, not for bread- - which is fine, ingredients run out - - but please inform the customer, just tell us, do not try to mislead us. When we mentioned that we recognized it was a substitute, we got a glare from the waiter, who I think was one of the owners, which is also concerning, because we should have been the ones glaring - but we were polite. We felt like in both instances, they were trying to "pull one over on us" and didn't like it when we caught it, and there were no apologies offered. t might be why my original critical review was removed, because my original review was polite and met all Yelp standards. But we visited this restaurant twice, it failed to meet reasonable expectations.

Yelp
We made a reservation and then had to change it to make sure we weren't late, and they were super accommodating. We ended up being a little earlier than expected, but they were still able to seat us right away. We ordered so many things because they all sounded so good. If you wanted something more filling like I did, I got the merguez sandwich, and the bread soooo good. I usually don't like pickles either, but I really liked these in my sandwich. I also tried my friends' avocado toast and smoked salmon, but I really liked how hearty and well-rounded the flavor profile was in the avocados. I don't I ever expected avocados to taste so meaty. The weird thing I did notice was that all my friends who ordered the avocado toast basically had different portion size. It might be because the slice of the bread varies, but then I think it's a bit unfair to my one friend who had the smaller portion. We really enjoyed these oysters as they were super refreshing and fresh. My friends described everything as filling but not too heavy. All our dishes came pretty quickly, except my sandwich. So I'm not sure if it was forgotten about or if it just takes longer than everything else, but in order to compensate for the long wait, they offered free tea to each of us. All my friends already had a coffee or tea, so I just got another cup of tea. I liked all the teas, and we tried the jasmine, silver needle, and oolong. It's unfortunate that their most popular was sold out, and I'm not even sure which that is. At the end of the meal, we each got a cute postcard to take home. This was definitely a really cute restaurant, and I'm looking forward trying the other things here. However, there seems to be a lot of mishaps with service. Maybe this is because this restaurant is still decently new? Regardless, I did enjoy my time here.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in D.C., hands down - and a very welcome addition to Capital Hill. Butterworth's is one of those places that genuinely cares about the food and drink they serve. The menu here is somewhere between French and American, mostly the former, and everything I've tried here was perfectly made and packed with flavor. You can tell that the chefs genuinely give a crap about the quality of every menu item - this isn't the kind of place that tosses together lazy sandwiches for the lunch crowd. Call me crazy, but the roasted chicken here is the best roasted chicken I've ever had in my life (and I have strong opinions about roasted chicken). The drinks here are equally good. Butterworth's has both classics (like a very well-made espresso martini) and some more adventurous stuff (like a pretty unusual "House Highball" that I'm a big fan of) on the menu, and it's all worth a try. The ambiance is equally fantastic. It reminds me of some of the places I've been to in Paris, albeit with a bit more homey feel thanks to some comfy chairs, tons of plants, and an antler chandelier. There's a timeless vintage vibe to the place that makes you want to drink champagne and read a book. In short: go, now. Even if they're not open. Go and camp outside until they do.

Yelp
Came on their official opening night and was impressed! Food and drinks were delicious with a very cool atmosphere. This is a welcome addition to the hill! Service wasn't amazing - it took a while to get the drinks after we ordered- but that can be expected when a place is so new. Only other comment is that we wished there were more classic French dishes like steak frites or French onion soup

Kelly T.

Yelp
Not a fan. Loud loud loud. Food as mediocre as the current administration. Management could do a lot better if they tried but don't think quality is their first priority. Obviously.

Yelp
review is for dinner - unfortunately had a poor first experience at butterworths all around. will need to return after they have more time to smooth things out and fine-tune the menus and service. walked in on a weekday and was able to grab a table by the door. there are two doors that open constantly and given the weather in january, we had to keep jackets on - try to sit at the bar or a dining room table. our server was eager to help, but unfortunately didn't guide us very well on the menu or how much to order. the dishes here - even the largest plates - are small portions. we split two small, two medium, and one large plate and left hungry. for the food - favorite dish was the braised tardivo - served whole with a comté sauce and caramelized onions. good tasting and balanced dish, but was a little difficult to eat given it was served whole and tough to cut into smaller pieces. the other favorite was the foie gras tart tatin with pearl onions - great flavors, just on the small side as it was about 4 bites total. the other dishes were unmemorable (scallop en croute), or memorable for the wrong reasons (the $36 beggars purse that was only a few bites - stuffed with a wild mushroom farce where flavors and textures of the mushrooms were lost, served with a simple side vinaigrette salad; and the cassoulet ravioli which was so salty we could only eat one bite of it - and I typically have a very high salt tolerance). for service - we (and other tables) had trouble finding our server at times for refills, drink orders, check, etc. we had to flag down the host stand or others walking by to get help. we unfortunately sent a drink back - a main flavor component for this particular cocktail was not listed on the menu (campari) which my dining companion does not like. they addressed it however and made her a bespoke cocktail based on what flavors she was looking for which was nice. we also ordered an add-on house uncrustable, which never arrived even after we brought it up. it took about 30 minutes for the first dishes to arrive, but timing was consistent after that. The inside/decor/vibe is great, just needs to improve on other areas of the experience, but I can see this becoming a great option in the neighborhood. Unfortunately we don't live nearby and given the initial experience aren't rushing to travel out of the way to give it another shot soon

Yelp
Visited friends in DC a few weeks ago. Had dinner here. Don't bother. There are great restaurants in DC. This is not one of them.

Yelp
The food and drinks are overpriced and the vibes are super weird. I would not recommend.

Yelp
Butterworth's is a great place that I can highly recommend. The food is great (really great - not just good) and the service is outstanding! We wanted a new place for dinner and Butterworth's came up. Man, are we glad that we found this place! We could only get a reservation for 9:15 pm and, when we arrived, the place was ROCKING!!! So active and lively and busy! Our table was not ready when we arrived so the very friendly and capable host/owner (Brent) seated us in the waiting area AND provided us with free drinks while we waited!!! OMG - that has never happened to us before anywhere!!! A good sign of good things to come in my book. We waited half an hour for our table and, during that time, various staff members stopped by to see how we were doing, to see if we wanted anything else, etc. They even offered us some tables that we did not want (near the cold front door for example) and they were very good at saying it was fine for us to wait. When our table finally was ready, it was a corner booth in the back - the BEST table in the entire dining room according to Brent. I agreed! So, let me take a minute to talk about the service at Butterworth's. Everyone we talked to was friendly and knowledgeable and willing to take time to have a conversation with us. And it seemed genuine! I am not sure how Brent has been able to gather a group of people so good at their jobs - but these are truly people who understand the hospitality business and they take it seriously! Accolades to the entire staff including owner and managers! The service at Butterworth's was top notch. A real reason to return all by itself! Now the food. So, the dining room is an eclectic mix of brick walls, mis-matched furniture, vintage elegance - but nothing high brow. The ambiance is friendly, chatty - loud even - casual and bistro-like - just as advertised. However, the quality of food OVER-delivered given the dining room. Each dish was excellent. Our appetizer was a scallop dish that was inventive, fresh, different and delicious! On the small side perhaps but it really left an excellent impression. And, given what our main course was, we were quite haeppy that it was small. What it lacked in size, however, it MORE than made up in flavor and impact! Now the main course. We ordered a big old ribeye steak (with the emphasis on big). We shared it, thank God, since the cholesterol level in that meat would have made my physician very unhappy! The steak was prepared just as we like - medium rare. The ribeye was perfect - chewy in that way that good beef should be. The bernaise sauce came in a charming cut glass bowl with a cute little cut glass cover on it. So cute! The fried potatoes (pomme frites) were the best I have ever had - and there was a whole mound of them! The course also came with a side salad of baby carrots that included the carrot greens, fennel, onions and all sort of other salad stuff. The beautiful vinegar-y dressing was a perfect foil to the robust and luxurious steak. We gobbled up the entire dish - steak, pomme frites, bernaise and salad - all of it!!! And we did not even feel guilty (just full). For dessert, we had the beignets which were small enough to finish. Powdered sugar and cinnamon pillows of fried dough to fall in love with! The coffee too was really good. I rarely walk away from a new dining experience where I think all the stars were aligned. But, here at Butterworth's, it happened. As we were putting on our coats, Brent came over to ask me how he had done. Where in DC does that ever happen? And I think that he genuinely wanted to know too (whether that's true or not, only Brent knows). All in all, Butterworth's is a great casual dining room that has a SUPER PROFESSIONAL AND FRIENDLY STAFF and some SURPRISINGLY GREAT FOOD!!! I recommend Butterworth's to one and all.

Yelp
Had the best steak sandwich I have ever had. You have to see Lee the bar manager when you are here. Makes a great old fashion.

Yelp
Wish I could give more stars, but the spotty service and "bang for the buck" just wasn't there. Had a late lunch with friends. I recommended Butterworth's because the social media buzz made it sound amazing. The ambiance is charming and welcoming, we loved the decor and quaint touches like the retro silverware and plates. One sever took our drink order, then another came over to ask if we had been helped yet, so we weren't sure who our server actually was. We had to ask a number of questions, because the menu had scant descriptions of the dishes. It was distracting and time consuming when all you want to do is catch up with friends. There is no menu on their website or socials, which makes it difficult when you are picking the restaurant for a group. Half way through we had empty glasses and would have gladly ordered another round of drinks, but no one came by to ask or check on us - and the restaurant was less than a third full. I would love to give them another shot, but there are so many other new restaurants closer to home. What we had: - chickpea panisse: I asked if these were like chickpea fries and was told yes. They are not like fries. But they were delicious! Crispy pillows that were light and airy on the inside. The best item we had all day - espresso martini: delicious. On the small side for $15, but this is DC - rockfish: very good - lamb ham- I guess putting "lamb ham" on a menu seems cutesy but it really doesn't tell you much. Is it lamb? Is it ham? Our server said it was lamb shoulder and that's it. So, I was surprised by what I received. The meat was on the tough side and the connective tissue made it difficult to cut into bite size pieces. - grilled cheese: I roll my eyes heavily when people say "I could have made this at home" about restaurant food. But at $16 one would expect there to be a modicum of thought about presentation, a sprig of parsley or something? I understand food costs are high, but a small handful of greens with a dash of vinaigrette on the side would have made this great. - latte and wine: good/very good

Natalie L.

Yelp
Smelled terrible in there. I don't know how they're serving food in that environment.

Eugenia J.

Yelp
Being new-ish presents issues for any enterprise. In the restaurant industry, good customer service can conceal or make up for deficiencies related to growing pains (in most cases). Unfortunately, when customer service fails, other issues become more apparent and less forgivable. Food. We opted for the soft scramble toast which, in our opinion, was just okay. It is a Gordon Ramsay style scramble with creme fraiche on top, instead of mixed in, topped with shaved black truffles. The eggs were salty to the extent of overshadowing the truffles or perhaps the truffles were lacking in flavor. (FYI, I am a truffle lover.) Service. Spotty to absent. The coffee orders took roughly 30 or so minutes to deliver, arriving after the meals were served even though we ordered coffee first. The server did apologize for the tardiness, but there were only two other tables seated when we arrived, so the reason for the long delay was clearly not a rush. We entered and left with little or no acknowledgement. Ambiance. The digs are nice, albeit a bit dim the further you get from the entrance. The setting is on the intimate side, with cool shabby chic decor that may get lost in other less complimentary facets. Parking is easy to come by close to opening time on the weekends. Happy eating, foodies!

Yelp
Visiting from the entertainment and food capital of the world, Las Vegas, I went Butterworth's to see what all the noise was about. It did not disappoint as The Most Interesting Men/Women in the World were hanging out. Bonus: The food, drinks and service weren't too shabby. Now a Bucket List restaurant/bar.

sandra s.

Yelp
The food is great. The coffee is great. The service is great. The ambiance is top notch East coast -- reminds me of a little known club I used to frequent. A place that Sinatra visited whenever in town. Pure class The food? Let's just say it's the only place I have eaten when in DC. It's a good habit to have!

Karen S.

Yelp
I've been to Butterworth's several times over the past months, for private events as well as for meals with friends, and each time I am completely delighted with the atmosphere - warm, inviting, charming, reminiscent of clubs of old but with a modern flair - and the food! From the appetizers to the entrees, each that I've sampled has been outstanding! And let's not forget the creativity in their beverage offerings! And a special shout-out to their waitstaff who are each incredibly attentive and friendly! The minute you walk in, you feel you're among friends - what a lovely way to feel! Butterworth's is my go-to for meeting friends in DC, and is one of the most welcoming establishments I've known. Just what you've been looking for, without even thinking such a place existed! Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Phenomenal new restaurant on Capitol Hill. Great brunch and even better lunch deals. Service was extraordinary for what you get now. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Lovely people and vibes, but they were out of both things we wanted by 9pm (tortellini and beignets). Plus it took 40m to get seated (granted the hostess gave us champagne which was nice). I'm vegetarian so nothing else suited. Definitely an acquired taste but wouldn't go again.

Jim R.

Yelp
Dinner was outstanding. First time trying skate wing and it was prepared well. Can't wait to come back!

Priya E.

Yelp
Favorite place in DC! The food and drinks are both incredible and the company is even better. The place is so beautiful and has the best vibes. 12/10 recommend!

Diane R.

Yelp
In town for inauguration. Upscale, cool hangout place. Food prices were slightly higher than I'm used to, but the grilled cheese and tomato soup were really delicious (and I'm a connoisseur). Memorable experience all the way around.

Matt B.

Yelp
"I think we're serving 100 people 'ok'" is what I heard a manager tell the bartender who said they were over capacity. That vibe may keep the late night service going, but it's not going to keep people coming back for $38 entrees. The food was delicious, but my glass was frequently empty. I hope this chef finds a place with better management soon.

Kelsey G.

Yelp
The space is gorgeous but service was inconsistent - my friend's drink came 20 minutes after mine the first time and was completely forgotten the second. Food was pretty good but didn't feel anything was particularly memorable. multiple food and drink items were unavailable, and when I was offered an alternative drink I was charged the higher price even though that wasn't what I ordered. Hopefully this is just an off night but I won't rush back.

Teferi M.

Yelp
As a longtime DC foodie, I was a little nervous about what Butterworth's had to offer. French cuisine seems over saturated in the DMV with the likes of le diplomate et al. Luckily, Butterworth's did not care about that and made sure to deliver. The service from start to finish was impeccable, and the quality of the dishes equally matched. We had the caviar waffle, scallops, steak tartare, bone marrow, and wild mushroom.

Derek H.

Yelp
Went to one of our new local restaurants for brunch and sat at the bar. Food is excellent. Mimosas also good but a bit pricey. Only downside was the condescending attitude of the manager to the bartender who was serving us. It was very upsetting and I'm not sure I'll return.

Br H.

Yelp
Stopped by opening morning and once again recently. Really love this place. The coffees (i tried the flat white and cafe spritz) are perfect and the avocado toast is perfectly seasoned. I look forward to returning frequently.

Glenna L.

Yelp
Very quaint restaurant in the heart of Capitol Hill. Service was excellent and the food was outstanding. Will come from brunch with my friends every Sunday going forward.

Julia H.

Yelp
We came for brunch on a Sunday at 12:30. The service was excellent (fast, friendly), the atmosphere was so pleasant (clearly a lot of thought put into design choices), and the crepes were very tasty! We were so pleased, and will return soon!

Sara P.

Yelp
We had dinner here and were immediately blown away by the space- it looks beautiful! Owner and chef Bart stopped by our table and welcomed us warmly. Our server Dante was wonderful and made sure we had a great experience. All of the dishes we had were excellent, but the vou-le-vent (sp?) was a stand out and unlike anything we've ever had! This was without question one of the best dining experiences we have had in DC. We will definitely be back with friends and family! Thank you Butterworth's team!

John D.

Yelp
Everything we had was delicious! Service was slightly delayed but nothing to write home over. Would recommend giving it a try. We will be back!
