The Best Shakshuka In LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Anytime we walk into a restaurant and make eye contact with a pizza oven, we immediately order whatever’s coming out fresh from the forno. Byblos Mediterranean Kitchen in La Crescenta-Montrose happens to have its own oven and cranks out excellent Armenian lahmajoun with crispy crusts, minced meat, and tons of fresh herbs. We also can’t recommend this restaurant’s cold appetizers enough, with their delicious muhammara, basturma (cured beef), and shanklish (dried cheese with olive oil and vegetables) being some top contenders. The shakshuka is also one of our favorites around and comes with plenty of bell peppers, onion, and chunky tomato sauce. The breakfast dish is nicely balanced with plenty of cumin and smokey paprika, and should definitely be part of your spread the next time you stop by." - sylvio martins

Byblos Mediterranean Bakery Review - La Crescenta-Montrose - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Anytime we walk into a restaurant and make eye contact with a pizza oven, we immediately order whatever’s coming out fresh from it. Byblos Mediterranean Kitchen in La Crescenta-Montrose happens to have its own oven and cranks out excellent Armenian lahmajoun with crispy crusts, minced meat, and tons of fresh herbs. We also can’t recommend this restaurant’s cold appetizers enough, with their delicious muhammara, basturma (cured beef), and shanklish (dried cheese with olive oil and vegetables) being the top contenders. The shakshuka is also one of our favorites around and comes with plenty of bell peppers, onion, and chunky tomato sauce. The breakfast dish is nicely balanced with plenty of cumin and smokey paprika, and should definitely be part of your spread the next time you stop by. Food Rundown Muhammara You get everything you want in a dip in this muhammara and then some. It’s creamy and nutty from the walnuts, the pomegranate molasses provides a zing of acid, and the aleppo pepper brings just enough burn to keep us intrigued and vigorously dipping our pita bread in. Lahmajoun If you’re only going to get one thing at Byblos, make it these chewy and deliciously blistered flatbreads coming out hot from the pizza oven. The minced beef topping is full of aromatic spices, fresh parsley, garlic, and onion, and the chopped tomatoes and spritz of lemon on top make all of the different flavors really pop. Shanklish This salty and mild dried cheese has the texture of crumbled cheese curds and is a must-try when ordering mezze at Byblos. It’s seasoned with chopped tomato, red onion, oregano, and a generous amount of olive oil that blends all of the fresh ingredients together. Shakshuka This shakshuka isn’t the smooth tomato sauce we’re used to seeing, but rather a chunky mix of roasted bell peppers, sweet onions, and bright tomatoes. We actually don’t mind the extra texture from the vegetables, and it has a nice savoriness from plenty of cumin and paprika. Zaatar Flatbread Just some tasty flatbread topped with copious amounts of olive oil and a thick caking of za’atar, what more could you want? It’s nutty, tangy, and should 100% make its way to your table. Manti These oven-baked dumplings are filled with spiced beef that’s tender and deliciously browned in the oven. Everything gets cooled down with a garlicky yogurt sauce and a tangy roasted tomato sauce that sneaks its way into all of the dumplings’ crevices." - Sylvio Martins

Google
Absolutely amazing. Very expansive menu, including breakfast items and brick oven pizzas but known for their Mediterranean food. The lule kabob was a bit dry, I think mine just got over cooked but I’ll definitely try it again another day. I also want to try their other items. The chicken shawarma was amazing. Staff was amazing and super nice. Customer bathrooms available and a small parking lot on the corner.

Out of all the kebabs I’ve tried, this place is the best! I love that the hummus is delicious and everything here tastes amazing — even the desserts are great. Whenever friends visit me from abroad, I always bring them here, and they are 100% satisfied every time.

Google
The shawarma pizza is delicious. The crust is different than regular pizzas and has a Mediterranean twist. It’s tastefully different.

Google
Some of the best food I’ve had and great service. Made me feel like I was at home definitely a place you want to try!!

Google
Second time eating here and I felt compelled to leave a review. The kebab portions were generous and flavorful without tasting overly salty. The hummus tasted authentic with lots of tahini flavor and creamy texture. Pickles and pita rounded out the pleasant experience. Staff were polite and efficient. There is limited parking in an adjacent lot and some street parking, but the lunch rush — a nearby school, no doubt — means you should get there early to beat the crowd.

Google
This place is amazing. The amount of food per serving is really great. We had the falafel, the vegetarian plate, the schwarma, and the kebob. We also had the dessert pizza. The dessert pizza was great and the falafel was good as well. The place seems super popular. I love the yogurt drink.

Google
First time here but love the aroma. Ordered Hummus, chicken and beef kebab. They all came out great. We also loved their pitta bread, soft and thicker than others. Ordered couple of Zaatars and they were delicious. 👍😋

Google
Byblos is amazing and truly worthy of receiving a 5 star rating. The food is absolutely great and sticks true to Armenian Mediterranean cuisine. The meat is high quality. The breads are delicious. Their breakfast is also very good. I highly recommend Byblos and all around had good food around the clock.

Yelp
This has been such a great place not only for a last minute meal but also for catering our larger home parties. Love their flat breads and boregs and the pizzas are amazing. Thank you for putting the love and care in the food you make because it shows. And so happy to see a Pasadena location open! Thank you!

Yelp
Ordered take out today and I do not recommend ordering on the phone as the person who took our order got almost everything wrong. Order on the website so you can make sure it's correct. I ordered 2 wraps and got 2 plates. I ordered falafel veggie plate but only received falafels. All the fries were soggy. Over $150 .... Not the experience or food I was expecting. My suggestion is check your food before leaving. I don't think I'll return. Food is way too expensive for the quality received. And almost everything was kind of lukewarm so it might've just been sitting even though you're given a time to pick up. Meh.

Yelp
We were next door for a birthday party. Stopped in for lunch before heading home. Ordered at the counter and grabbed a table number. Then waited for a table to become available and seat ourselves. Every item seemed to be freshly made (even the pita bread). So it took about 20-25 mins for our foods to come out. (Thankfully we had party favors from the birthday to pass time for my kids). The foods were delicious so the wait was def worth it. We noticed lots of regulars stopped in. Def a local fav. Wished Byblos is a bit closer to us. Would def stop in again if we are in the area.

Yelp
Food is very fresh from Oven.good quality ingredients. Service is very good. Very friendly. Like the ambience to dine in. In house Baklava is really fresh and tasty. I like the Dark chocolate Dubai Kunafa chocolate. Can really feel the crispy pistachio filling soo fresh and tasty. We took the chocolates and Baklava to our friends and they all liked it a lot. Will definitely go back and recommend it to my friends.

Yelp
Food is delicious and the atmosphere is very nice as well. The service great as always. First time on this new location. Highly recommend

Yelp
This new location sits just a few blocks down from the original and luckily nothing has changed as far as taste, family friendly service and the many glorious bites they offer. My love for Byblos runs deep man because from the moment I had one of these flatbreads in 2021, it's be Byblos 4 lyfe. The Za'atar and Mediterranean Cheeses flatbread is one of my favorite things to eat in the whole city. It's salty, cheesy, lemony and delicious every dang time. Baked fresh in a wood fired oven right in front of you.

Yelp
So happy that Byblos is back! They were closed down for a bit due to structural damage at their old location;however, they relocated about a block away and still in the city of La Crescenta on Foothill. Their food is great! Expect a line and a little wait - a popular spot for Lebanese-Armenian fare. The freshly baked pita and flatbreads are so good! Ambiance: inside seating available but kinda cramped (weird layout). It's a fast casual restaurant. Locals do mostly takeout and catering. Again, the food is delicious here.

Yelp
Have been coming for years and is always as good as a remember it. Mantee and Fatoush are definitely my favorites!

Yelp
Highly Recommend. Our neighborhood Go-To. We love the made to order skewers, homemade hummus and right from the oven Pita bread. Consistency with flavors and fresh ingredients. We appreciate the friendly service too, Thank You!
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Ordered the mantee and for $27 its a VERY small plate. The bottom is all wet and did not look or taste fresh. For those who do not know, mantee is supposed to be crispy, THIS WAS SOGGY. Definitely not worth $27. Trash

Yelp
Love Byblos and their new location We usually grab a bite here 2-3 times a month. Sometimes twice a week ! Great family owned restaurant. Must try their fresh baked Pita bread. Nothing like it ! Their portions are very generous. Everyone has always a smile on their face. Good food. Always good taste never fails ! Positive ambiance ! Happy place ! If you love mid eastern food /dishes. Appetizers. Wraps and etc. you will not go wrong with Byblos !!

Yelp
Love Byblos and their middle eastern breakfast menu. Ordered falafel which were perfection , foul which I love there , lahm ajeen was also very good and of course the fresh out of the oven trademark pita bread. Overall always an amazing experience and can't wait to go back for breakfast.

Yelp
The best middle eastern in the foothills in my opinion. Their pizzas are delicious as well; made with a Lebanese style. Never have been dissatisfied with what I've ordered. 5 stars

Yelp
Use to frequent this place but I feel like food and service went down recently especially after the recent move to the new location.
google avatar

Sonia N.

Yelp
This tiny spot brings huge Mediterranean flavors. On a Sunday afternoon, wait times were fairly astronomical, but it turned out well worth it. The vegetarian plate was excellent, as was the falafel sandwich. Freshly baked pitas were fluffy and light, and the flatbreads with cheese and zaatar were filled with flavor. The salad was super fresh and delicious. We enjoyed every bite!

Yelp
1) This new place that they moved to... Looks like a Dump!! 2) The service they are confused 3) The food is almost as good as before... it used to be great. 4) looks like a second hand food place to eat 5) Prices are super expensive according it's interior depressing rundown decor 6) water is unfiltered and tastes like mud
google avatar

Yelp
I love awesome Lebanese food here Byblos Bakery , I ordered the Ajarski and Nutella Pizza . Taste really good with a Middle Eastern Vibe . We were seated and greeted with a table of 6. Good service and nice owners. Moderate prices, you cant beat.

Yelp
We ate in. Benches are pretty comfortable for a take away joint. I would have appreciated either or both a proper plate, or knife and fork. But beggars can't be choosers. What you get is more than decent Lebanese/ Mediterranean food for slightly more than you'd want to pay given it's not a restaurant (see above). We had dolmas, kibbe, a chicken wrap and a falafel plate. All were tasty and they didn't scrimp on portions. Bread was freshly made, which elevated the experience. We'd definitely go again. In La Crescenta adjusted terms this place is stellar!

Narine A.

Yelp
Byblos never disappoints. Everything they prepare is consistent. The food is always made fresh to order and they train their staff to keep the quality the same.
google avatar

Yelp
Their new location has finally opened and it's as amazing as always! Missed this food soooo much. Cannot tell you how happy I am to be back here! If you like Mediterranean food, this is the very Best!
google avatar

Allen A.

Yelp
Everything on the menu is AMAZING!! But I have no idea why the pilaf and salad that the plates come with is always flavorless, the Lebanese know how to make amazing rice but this rice has zero flavor and no idea why the dressing on the salad is very little and flavorless.

Yelp
They have my favorite food. The servers are very friendly, happy and clean. The restaurant is very nice reminds me of Beirut.

Joshua I.

Yelp
Delicious "Byblos Combo Kebab Plate" at the La Crescenta/Montrose location on Foothill.

Antonio H.

Yelp
A+ food and service. Clean restaurant, fresh ingredients, tasty food. I highly recommend this place. So much good food to choose from.

Suzi S.

Yelp
We've been patrons of Byblos for many years, and ordered weekly during Covid. However todays experience was terribly disappointing. Prices are out of control for the quality and accomodations. For our dine in lunch, our food was served lukewarm on a sectioned paper plate with plastic utensils. $70. for two Schwarma plates, two sodas and a small tabouli. The chicken was tasteless, the rice was lukewarm with no flavor, the tabouli tasted like it was sprinkled with bottled lemon juice, and the humous was just okay, the bread however was the only saving grace. What happened? The food used to be amazing and they used to serve dine in on real plates and flatware. I just pray that this quality is not their new standard. It's just a shame.
google avatar

Ani A.

Yelp
I always go here when I'm around the area. The food here is some of the best. They have so many vegetarian options as well. Everything is always so fresh and tasty. I was so sad when their original location burned down but I'm glad to see a new one has popped up. The service is good and the new location is in an even better area with more parking.

Yelp
I ordered the agarski, waited 25-30 minutes and paid $20 for the most average 6/10 agarakan ever. The dough was very flat and the filling was even less (I couldn't even mix it without the bottom of the bread ripping). I don't know much about the other dishes, but I definitely wouldn't recommend the agarakan.

Yelp
Super fresh! Always nice and good people. One day I went there with red eyes (cried so much) they gave me soemthing to make me feel special.
google avatar

Yelp
Sooooo bummed about the food I just picked up. I haven't ordered from them since the moved locations and I remember it being a lot better. Food is so expensive now days so paying a lot of money for and extremely disappointing meal it truly aggravating. I got the falafel wrap with no tomato and apparently that means they will also leave out the lettuce? The falafel was mushy. The fries were stale and soggy. I won't be going there again.
google avatar

Gary D.

Yelp
for now the best Zaatar / Mana-eesh in SoCal. I drove 45 min to have it on my birthday. Need I say more? Weekends get busy and crowded. Come by on a weekday before the lunch rush.
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
This is a review for a pick-up order placed directly on their website on a Friday afternoon. Food may be better in the restaurant, but I found it a little below average. We ordered our food and picked it up ourselves in about 10 minutes, but it was still lukewarm, and the vegetables seemed like they had been sitting out all day. There were lots of flavorless raw roma tomatoes... way, way too many. They're okay, but I prefer more flavorful tomatoes and threw most of the ones with and in our meal away. Ordered a Greek chicken salad, and it was 1/4 huge tomato chunks. Not enough lettuce or marinated onions. I think we must have had 4-5 full tomatoes cut in 2 different ways with our meal. So if you love tomatoes, this is your spot! The chichen was nicely seasoned, but it was lukewarm and not amazing. I did love all the mint, cucumber, onion and olive though. None of the veggies were charred or grilled. The pickled turnips were flavorless. I found the quality of vegetables lacking and think they could be highly improved by shopping at the farmer's market for their fresh ingredients. The falafel is good, but it tasted like it was cooked on a filthy grill, ruining the whole falafel taco experience for us. The grilled haloumi was my favorite. The hummus is very creamy but somehow lacking in any meaningful flavor and mostly just salty. It's not my favorite. The pita bread was decent, and they give you a lot. I almost forgot about the French fries, which were flavorless, lukewarm and just blah, not crispy at all.. these also all went directly in the trash. I think it's all a little too expensive for a bunch of chopped tomatoes and just okay food. There wasn't anything that wowed me. I'm kind of surprised by all the 5 star reviews.
google avatar

Yelp
Always amazing food and always consistent on everything here. Amazing Lahmajoun crispy bread, tasty marinated meat it's a must try Beef Shawarma Plate - I think they cook the shawarma meat with a pm but the quality of the meat and the marination is on point, tahini sauce is very good, humus is amazing.

Yelp
Been living in the foothills almost my entire life and I only recently discovered this place. Been coming here ever since. Truly a gem. Everything is so fresh and tasty. Service has always been on point and everyone at the restaurant is so nice. It's been really hard for me to go to any other spot when I'm craving a Mediterranean dish. Feel free to try it for yourself if you don't believe me. Thank you Byblos!
google avatar

Yelp
Hot all meats, margherita, and for there well known juicy Armenian sausage (Soujouk) pizzas and a side of some sweet paklava !
google avatar

Janette I.

Yelp
The best manti in town!!!! Growing up my grandma always made home made manti and I can say it with confidence that this place serves amazing manti. Overall, everything was delicious. Customer service was pretty nice as well. The place is kinda tiny so you can just order it and enjoy it at home.

Yelp
Byblos does middle eastern and Mediterranean food as well as anyone else near and far! Their new location has plenty of seating and their expansive menu makes Byblos a must visit at least once per month (or week if I'm lucky). Their baked items are the star of the show and their kabobs never disappoint either.
google avatar

Shannon O.

Yelp
The Toum (garlic sauce) is so delicious!!!! Best I've had since I moved here from Michigan. Staff was so nice. Food was really good. Hummus had lots of flavor and loved the stuffed grape leaves. Definitely will be back.

Ainsley L.

Yelp
Food was made in a timely manner. I had the Iskander Kabob and 3 zaatar flatbreads. All of this was delicious! The beef shawarma in the Iskander Kabob was especially flavorful! The cashier was friendly. The restaurant was very clean and nicely decorated inside.
google avatar

Emma C.

Yelp
Byblos is BACK!!!! I've ordered the cheese boreg, zaatar, falafel, hummus and a few other items and they taste amazing just like I remember. They are very busy as expected, and the wait time on the app is not always accurate so you may be waiting at the restaurant. But I am so happy to have them back I will happily wait! Cynthia is so nice and I always feel welcome. The new location has a small parking lot shared with other businesses so be prepared to circle around. The interior is so nice and new, I will have to get a booth and dine-in one day. Their re-opening has been the highlight of my year so far, I can't wait for their lentil soup to return in the winter! I'm such a super fan that if they had Byblos merch I would definitely buy a shirt!

Yelp
One of my favorites spots in La Crescenta. I was in the area for work and ended up having lunch here with my son. The food is amazing. Everything is fresh and flavorful. So much to chose from. Their lahmajun is one of the best in the LA and it's cooked in a brick oven. Zaatar bread is another favorite of mine. Sandwiches, plates, kebabs and variety of appetizers. Can't go wrong. Great customer service Great food You won't be disappointed.

Christopher B.

Yelp
Byblos in La Crescenta is the real deal--bomb food across the board. Highly recommend the Byblos Wrap and the Garlic Chicken Press--both are fire. And in my opinion, they serve the best lamajun in the entire Glendale area. Everything is fresh, flavorful, and made with care. Definitely a go-to spot!

Amalee E.

Yelp
The food is delicious! We ordered Lahmajoun, chicken shawarma wraps with fries, sujuk with cheese flatbread, half zatar half cheese flatbread, cheese with (fresh) spinach flatbread, & the zatar cheese mix flatbread. The drinks we ordered were tea and fresh orange juice. My folks really enjoyed the tea, and loved the orange juice. Everything tasted great, made fresh with good quality ingredients. The only Lahmajoun I've ever liked is my aunt's. Now I can say there are two Lahmajouns I've ever liked. Along with the great food is stellar service. The people here are so sweet and kind; it feels like you're dining with family.
google avatar

Miles A.

Yelp
So i know the price of bulghur wheat has gone up but that doesn't account for a tabouli which was mainly parsley and mint. The hummus was OK as was the baba ganouj, but there were only two small falaffel and two half starved dolmades, a few pickles and pitta all for $18 + Tax. This used to be a great place and worth the money but I fear that is no more the case. Shame.

Donna R.

Yelp
Last two times ordering pizza the crust is too cooked! I love a crisp pizza but burnt is not good. The hummus was excellent though
google avatar

Leanne S.

Yelp
SO GOOD. Their boreg is delicious. I love the mini spinach boreg and the mini cheese boreg. They are made perfectly and the bread is amazing. Melts in your mouth. I have also had the grape leaves, falafel tacos, chicken breast kabob, and the ajarski, all of which are good. My friend loves the vegetarian plate. Also, the baklava is really good. I am picky about baklava, it can't be too syrupy or too sweet or too dry. Theirs is perfect. They have an app which is great. You can download it on your phone and order for pickup. You earn points on the app too for discounts. Definitely recommend checking this place out.
google avatar

Mineh M.

Yelp
This place is a bit overrated and overpriced Middle Eastern fast food in town. A great example of overpaying for lack of adequate service. When dining in ordering meals like soup it is served in tinware and plastic cutlery. Not to mention a standard sandwich can go up to $16 or 18... for mediocre fast food. Who are we kidding? I would rather cook at home.

A. H.

Yelp
Food is fantastic and definitely worth the wait. I love their humus and their shawarma tacos. My suggestion is call ahead they have a lot of to go orders. There's something for everyone on their menu.
google avatar

George B.

Yelp
It's really bad when you go over there you order your food in the line for 10 minutes and then they ask you do you have a table? Are you tell him I just got here people with their kids reserving the tables sorry that's bad business. I don't wanna spend any penny on this business before you go over there. Make sure you're gonna be able to sit or they're not gonna serve you, they're gonna say you have a table sorry you're taking it home!
google avatar

Juli S.

Yelp
It was a little busy. Nice open place. Everyone on staff was so nice and accommodating . The food was amazing!! I had the vegetarian plate. Every item was fresh and delicious . The pitas still amazing the next day. I will be back!
