The Best Things We’ve Eaten Lately

"Homemade Fries “One of the most important parts about being in a committed relationship is the responsibility to share your fries. My beloved orders a braised beef sandwich from this Eastern European deli at least once a week, and while the sandwich is good, it comes with these incredible homemade battered french fries that have a perfect balance between fluff and crunch - and their creamy pesto dip is the cherry on top. He always shares, every time, and that’s why we’re still together today.” -Aimee Rizzo, Staff Writer" - julia chen 1, carlo mantuano, aimee rizzo

Google
This place is a gem. I came in just looking for a new place to try and ended up liking this place way more than I planned. The sandwich I had was flavorful, and was just made with perfection. Water and juice was good. nd I couldn't resist trying a slice of cake and it was very good. The salad was amazing too..... Definitely coming back at somepoint.

Google
Very nice place for breakfast and staff are friendly. First time to try byrek and order the savory one with beef spinach and tomato. It’s delicious but I think it’s better if it’s serve warm. Love the mascarpone pistachio cake.

Google
Nice little family-run cafe right by Seattle University that has breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads and byreks made like in Albania (description on their cafe wall). We liked the baguette sandwiches. The chicken soup was also hearty. The fries were so good! The baguette is not like the traditional French baguette, but is soft and chewy in texture and much smaller. The outside crust didn't look the most appetizing to me, but it made up in flavor. Friendly service and there is quite a bit of seating inside this cafe.

Google
I’ve been eating here for years and I have yet to find something on the menu I didn’t like. They have the BEST fries on the hill. The ingredients are always fresh. The deserts are adorable and the staff is so kind and friendly. Some of my faves: pistachio baklava, chicken apple salad, the fig jam & prosciutto baguette, and yes the FRIES! Today I finally tried the chicken soup. I didn’t see a photo or description so I was hesitant to order, but it’s hitting the spot. It’s kinda like a vegetable stew but with generous chunks of chicken. It came with little buttered toasts for dipping. It also has carrot, onion, garlic and potato pieces. So tasty! This was the perfect remedy for a rainy day. :)

I was in the area looking for a quick breakfast on the government when I stumbled upon this place. It looked new so I decided to check it out. Place was nice and quiet, the person at the counter was very nice and welcoming. She explained to me what a byrek is as I had never heard of it before. I got two, one beef which was so flavorful, moist on the inside with a perfect crisp flaky dough on the outside. The other was a spinach one, the flavor was good but it was somewhat dry and hard to chew. I think it needed to come out of the oven a few minutes earlier. Overall, I would recommend. I'd come back to try out more.

Google
Reaaaallly loved this place. Great food with great prices. I got the honey ham baguette sandwich and it was perfect. Really a delicious blend of the ingredients. The bread was warm and delicious. The apricot spread on the sandwich was delightful. I was kind of caught off guard by how great this sandwich was. My boyfriend ordered the bacon scramble but asked for cheddar cheese instead of the regular and really enjoyed his meal. The potatoes that came with it also particularly impressed. He said the toast wasn't that great but everything else he really enjoyed. We also split a piece of their Nutella cheesecake which was delicious. It was very rich and chocolatey so prepare to be maybe a little overwhelmed by the depth of the chocolate :P The one true negative was the coffee. Apparently the amaretto didn't live up to my boyfriend's sweet tooth standards so depending on what you like it may be perfect for you if you don't need your coffee to be sweet. The coffee looked really cute. Staff were great and their bathroom was clean. Ambiance was great. Loved their aesthetic. I already want to go back for more.

Google
Just started at the university and tried this place for the first time! The baguettes are the perfect amount of crunchy and moist. The pastries, fries and salads look amazing and they were very fast even when busy! I fear I will spend a lot of money here over the next 3 years.

Google
Stopped by for dinner. This place has: delicious food, very nice staff, and a cute modest tasteful aesthetic. Big share table in the middle of the restaurant is a plus. Amazing food value. Salads are fresh with generous ingredients and portions. Don’t leave without trying the Byrek. Highest recommendation.

Yelp
I've heard such good things about this place, so I had to come check it out. Came here for lunch on a Friday & I really enjoyed this cafe. Their fries and pesto aioli are top tier. I could eat it for a whole meal. Their sandwiches were also really good. My friend who was visiting got the chicken pesto and said it was amazing. Also said it was his favorite place in Seattle so far! Guess we'll have to visit every time he comes now. The woman at the register was super sweet. We order at the front and they bring the food to you. I ran out of sauce for my fries, so they gave me more which was very nice. Their carrot cake was also delicious.

Yelp
I used to order from Byrek pretty consistently during the pandemic but stopped as their chicken pesto Baguette sandwich either had just the right amount of pesto or had too much where it was just an oily mess. Recently tried it again and it was okay. Still a shame they don't include the fries with the sandwiches, given the cost. Their plain French toast was delicious, and well cooked. I'd recommend their breakfast options (French toast and breakfast sandwiches). If you are coming in for lunch, try to place a order (either by calling or through one of the delivery apps) as it can be pretty busy.

Yelp
Nice grilled baguette with aioli, pickles, red onion, lettuce, baked turkey, tomato and provolone. The beet and citrus salad is like a $3 up-charge or so and worth it instead of fries

Wendy K.

Yelp
This place rocks. I came for the first time at night - I only had been here for lunch - and it was great. The food is excellent and the service is great! We had wine by the glass with our salads and it was delightful.

Yelp
Kind of a hidden gem on the Ave because the cafe seems so unassuming on the outside but is so cute and well decorated on the inside! They have cafe drinks as well as food options. Tried their sandwiches and fries this time and they were pretty yummy and very fresh.
google avatar

Yelp
Very tasty sandwiches! The pricing was a bit unexpected ($16+) but they were very fresh and on a Demi baguette. The matcha was ok though it wasn't super well mixed as there were quite a few clumps of matcha on the bottom. The server was helpful and it was a chill and well lit space to eat if you prefer to dine in.

Yelp
I have loved this cafe since 2017. I would always order delivery when I worked downtown and would rave about their fresh salads, delicious sandwiches and fries. I finally had the chance to go in person and the owner was so friendly and I ordered my usual: the chickens and goat cheese salad, side of fries. The aioli that comes with the fries is INSANELY good. It's so flavorful. You can tell everything is made fresh! The way they cooked their grill chicken is top tier, so thinly sliced and cooked through that makes it enjoyable and pairs nicely with the other salad ingredients. Glad this place is still around after Covid, it's my absolute favorite and everyone should try! Their menu is pretty big!

Yelp
We had a wonderful breakfast here this morning. I love a cafe with real dishes and utensils. And when the service and food are great, then it's definitely a win. Spicy omelet for him, Mediterranean omelet for me. We both thought the ingredients, flavor, and preparation were great. The toast was yummy. He liked the potatoes that came with the omelets. I'm not a huge potato fan and still ate some. We split a byrek, which was good. I had tea, and he had fresh squeezed orange juice.

Yelp
Nice service good food Ordered Byrek beef onion tomatoes, was a bit hesitating to taste it as a bit exotic to me , but turn out I was happy to give it a try and I loved it

Yelp
Located in downtown Cap Hill. Came here for some food and to work for a bit. Chicken Pesto Sandwich ($11.90) - I thought this was sort of bready and dry but the flavors were nice and it was well assembled. Leek & Feta Byrek ($6.25) - Nice flakey filo dough with a good amount of filling. Savoury and flavorful. There were desserts in the case that looked excellent. There was also an insane swarm of flies inside which kind of killed the vibe.

Yelp
Great ambience, great food, great service. I asked the lady for recommendations and she didnt fail.

Yelp
Fabulous soup, salad and sandwich shop. Everything overloaded with fresh veggies. Why is Seattle so devoid of places to get a simple healthy sandwich for lunch? I would eat lunch here daily if I worked nearby. The cons: a wee bit overpriced and at times confusingly slow. Love to bring a book and relax at the big tables. More shops like this, please!

Yelp
Cute café across the street from Seattle U's law building and library. Love the pork baguette I had and the fries were EXCELLENT. Whatever garlic aioli thing they serve with the fries.... they need to bottle that and ship it everywhere. It was soooo good. Nice that nothing was greasy either. Service was quick and friendly. There seems to be ample seating for groups of up to 4. Water is self-serve and there are trays for you to leave your dishes. I had the leek byrek which was good, but it paled in comparison to the fries and baguette. Not sure what it was missing, but definitely I know what to order the next time I return!
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
A great lunch spot! I had the chicken pesto baguette and it was so good with the sauce and arugula. The fries were SO crispy and perfect with their pesto aioli dipping sauce. It stayed crispy even though we sat and ate lunch for a while. You order and have to find your own table though, either inside or outside.

Yelp
I order a late night sandwich via Uber eats from Byrek and I really enjoyed it. So, I decided to drive 20 minutes to get to know the actual place. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and it was bland, but the breakfast baguette was really good. So, lesson learned, you are better to order sandwiches that are served in a baguette, since it is really good bread! The coffee is not good, service is average but I guess people come here because the location is convenient. So, it is not a place you would get out of the way to visit, it is not worth it.

Yelp
Great food, great people, cute space. HIGHLY recommend the fig jam baguette!! The salads are also amazing especially the beat salad
google avatar

Nikita S.

Yelp
Ambiance (1/5) - Casual place for quick spot or preferably pick up. Service (1/5) - The lady was weird and wasn't interested taking up our order and it seemed she was mostly preoccupied mentally. Maybe she was having a tough day at work Sandwich (2/5) - Order Chicken Pesto and Chicken Artichoke. Pesto was better than Artichoke. however, both of them were pretty dry for me. Won't be going again
google avatar

Yelp
Food is amazing but service is a bit slow, bc of this i called in advance to order but still had to wait over 20 minutes (it was also practically empty)
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
Good sandwiches and salads. We usually frequent this restaurant at least once during our Seattle visits.
google avatar

Pranav K.

Yelp
Nice owner run establishment and good service and ambience. We ordered the spicy omelette which lived up to it's name and the baguette sandwich was delicious. Took the beef and spinach byreks home, but they did not hold up well to reheating. Would love for a lamb option in the future to which the owner lady was very receptive and has promised to let me know when that comes on the menu ;)
google avatar

Autumn L.

Yelp
Solid coffee and delicious food! I've tried the baguette sandwiches and byreks and they are both are amazing. Honestly though, my favorite item from here is actually the fries, they're coated in a crispy batter of some sort similar to curly fries, so they have the perfect texture. The green sauce is also the perfect dip for the fries, I believe it's a pesto aioli. They honestly have so much other food that i want to try as well, like their sweet breakfast foods and desserts, but I can confidently say that their savory food is 5/5!
google avatar

Ruby R.

Yelp
I ordered the shredded beef sandwich. It was one of the best I have ever had! I can't wait to go back and try some of their other menu items. A cool place to go eat and hang out with friends or family. I like the decor and the friendly service.
google avatar

Tricia M.

Yelp
My daughter goes to school across the street from here and she recommended for us to meet here for breakfast. We had the fries which were hot and crispy with a delicious type of dipping sauce, the chicken pesto baguette, and the Mediterranean baguette. My favorite was the Mediterranean. Delicious food. Maybe because it's wad a rainy day but there was just no smile, no greeting as we walked up to order. We are from Hawaii so most times you get at least a smile .

Lexy R.

Yelp
The owner recently published his opinion piece where he spreads misinformation about the minimum wage law for food delivery drivers. He claims that the city of Seattle is randomly forcing corporations to pay gig workers "roughly $30 per hour" which is just a regurgitation of corporate lies. Instead of being mad that gig workers now get paid MINIMUM WAGE, how about being mad at the corporations that are charging excessive fees both to customers and to restaurants? It really makes you wonder how Byrek & Baguette workers are treated. I wouldn't be surprised if the owner commits classic restaurant wage theft through shady tip pools, missed breaks, or just plain ol' underpaying workers.

Yelp
I love trying new foods from different cultures, so I was pretty stoked in trying out the Byrek. I read somewhere that their version of Byrek is Albanian, so I ordered the typical Mediterranean/Balkan filling loved by all, Spinach and Feta! I thought it was good, i liked how flaky this pastry dish was. Although I wish I ordered the meat one, I feel like it would really make it complete. But they ran out of the beef byrek when I came in. I also ordered their baklava which was delicious! I'd like to come back again sometime to try their other byreks.
google avatar

Mae D.

Yelp
Wow! I ordered through Uber Eats and I'm blown away with their shredded beef baguette and omg it's a flavor explosion in your mouth! I haven't stopped thinking about this sandwich and it's been a few months that's how good it was. The bread was soft but the crust was crunchy. The meat was juicy and tender and just overall flavorful. I would like to visit their restaurant to try other things but god damn that sandwich... I'd have to get it again!
google avatar

Alisha M.

Yelp
I was introduced to this place via a work colleague so we ordered it for a work lunch. Wow! The beet salad with additional chicken was amazing. I adore the mandarin oranges. The chicken is so flavorful! The fries and pesto aioli is to die for!!!
google avatar

Natassia D.

Yelp
Delicious baguette sandwiches, perfect for a casual lunch with friends that will fill you up! Ordered the chicken artichoke baguette and loved the pickled red onions and pepperoncinis that complimented the rest of the sandwich nicely. Even though the baguette comes with pesto inside, I would highly recommend getting some pesto sauce on the side to dip your sandwich in too! My only complaint was that the sandwich was pretty oily and was constantly dripping out while eating it which I'm not always a fan of, but nonetheless still great flavors.
google avatar

Priscilla L.

Yelp
I went here for the first time with my friend. I got the Mediterranean omelette, he got the breakfast sandwich. Both were really yummy! When we got there around 11:30 it was empty but at 12 it became packed with people coming in for lunch. Nevertheless, it was comfortable with condiments by our table- Tabasco and ketchup. A lady who worked there was super nice, bussing and bringing food out during the rush. 10/10, would go again!! I'm
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
Big fan! Lots of options and combos of baguette sandwiches and byreks. Their baguette was fresh and tasty. Never had a byrek before but I really really liked the spinach and feta. Their salads were great as well. Great portion of food all around.
google avatar

Hiral P.

Yelp
Definitely one of my favorite sandwich places in Seattle. The sandwiches taste very fresh and the baguette is very well made. I definitely recommend going here

JJ M.

Yelp
I ordered a coffee the other day during lunch hour, and the young lady that made my drink was friendly and efficient. Very good customer service. The coffee was so yummy, I'm thinking of becoming a regular at this establishment!
google avatar

Louise F.

Yelp
Came in out of curiosity for what a byrek was, and ended the meal wishing I'd ordered 2 instead of one! Reminded me of a spanikopita and tastes so good with the sour cream it comes with. Will definitely come back to try more.
google avatar

Elijah N.

Yelp
I'm so frustrated with this place. The service issues coupled with the dwindling portion sizes have made me decide I am never coming back. I asked if my order was ready and they said no. After waiting for 25 minutes, the order was sitting there the entire time getting soggy. This has happened in a similar capacity the last few times I've been here.
google avatar

Emily I.

Yelp
Easily the best chicken pesto sandwich I've ever had in my entire life. What I recommend is to get the turkey pesto but get chicken in it instead. Superb. Highly recommend. I want to kiss the chef it was so good. I'm from California and have been home for about a week now and I'm still thinking about this godly wich. I almost want to return to Seattle just for this sandwich.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
So originally I came to the store they day they opened and the chicken pesto has long been a favorite with the garlic fries. In the last year the owner has come up with a unbelievably savory yet slightly spicy pulled pork sandwich that is "slap your mother in the face" delicious It's smoky and spicy it's a little greasy it's tiny it's delicious oh my gosh it's amazing. I'm starting to think that the amazing aspects of the store are because of pure delicious witchcraft and I cannot stop coming here love the food the service is amazing family that runs this has another place near UW that I would like to go more often to.
google avatar

Lulu K.

Yelp
First time I came in the cashier wasn't really welcoming. But she did help suggest what were the popular food items. I got the chicken pesto sandwich for the first time and I thought it tasted amazing. Good amount of veggies, great flavors, and a nice crunch to the bite. The only thing I didn't really like was how the thin the chicken breast was. It was so thin to the point where it gets dry and hard to chew. I tried the chicken apple salad which also same thing... chicken is dry and thin. It would probably taste so much better if the meat was juicy and thick. The sauce tho was nice and citrusy. Lentil soup is pretty good as well if you're looking for something warm on a cold day. Beef byrek was good but not great. Slightly cold and not as crispy as I thought it would be with its flakes. Overall I would be down to try the other foods... But it could be so much better.
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
Beef byrek was burnt. I ordered to-go and discovered this once I got home! It was so burnt and dry that I couldn't eat it. What a waste of money!!
google avatar

Edward S.

Yelp
We went here for lunch. It is a nice, open cafe with very friendly staff. We both had baguettes and drinks. I had the honey ham baguette and a chai latte. The baguette was outstanding. The bread itself is perfect for a sandwich. The brilliance is how the mascarpone cheese and apricot jam accentuate the ham--just really wonderful. This is what a sandwich should taste like. The chai latte was really nice. My friend had the Mediterranean avocado. She also loved it. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Huong L.

Yelp
We decided to try this place for dinner as we heard a lot of good things about them. We got the roasted veggies baguette, the beef byrek and the spinach byrek. The baguette was confusing??? but in a good way. When I first bite into it, it was hard and chewy and I didn't like it, but then as I ate more, I like the flavors coming from the veggie and the chewy-ness of the bread was more of a delight. I think i would prefer it to be a little less chewy though. The byrek was good. I like the beef more than I like the spinach because it's more juicy. The yogurt sauce did help. Overall, it was a good meal and I can see myself coming back for other meals.

Leo P.

Yelp
This is sooo delicious!!! We even had leftovers! I flew all the way from London just to try this place and It was So worth it! Definitely a recommendation for everyone!
google avatar

Eva M.

Yelp
This is a limited review as I tried only one item. And it was awesome! Byrek - Grass-fed ground beef, onions, tomatoes According to the sign on the wall, byrek is a pastry that can be savory or sweet. Their byrek is their family's Albanian family recipe. They house-make everything, including their dough, their bread, salad dressing, and all their ingredients are locally sourced. It's sort of like a flaky puff pastry type of dough, slightly less flaky, less layers. The ingredients are rolled inside. So unique and so yummy! They are on a quiet street in Cap Hill. I'm sure they would appreciate your business!

Peyton C.

Yelp
Food is good and service is good but price is insane. They pray off of College kids don't recommend for price but always pretty good food.

Alvaro H.

Yelp
Very very good food highly recommended its crunchy it's all fresh and everything is very clean

Thomas M.

Yelp
Great coffee and food, service a bit lackluster at times but nothing terrible. The true GEM at this place tho are the fries. Best fries I have ever had and they are crispy and fresh every single time, and served with a basil garlic aoli. Heaven.

Varun K.

Yelp
We were sauntering in the sun and chanced on this cozy little café. We were a bit skeletal whether to dine in or take away, ended up dining in, levering the curb-side outside seating area. The sandwiches were fresh and delicious, and The host was quick, and pleasing. Highly recommend their tiramisu (photo). Just entered the list of my favourite spots.
google avatar

Hong T.

Yelp
I've been coming here for lunch for many years. The staff is always so friendly and the food is always great. I like their chicken pesto baguette and their Byreks. The byreks are perfectly flakey and their fillings are all so good. The Apple byrek is good if you're in the mood for something sweet. My go to savory byrek is the beef one. Their fries and pesto aioli is also something I always have to get when I stop by.
google avatar

Grace D.

Yelp
With indoor and outdoor seating in a convenient location near Seattle University, this Albanian family-run cafe is perfect for the not-very-adventurous who want to expand their geography without too many foreign ingredients. The space's large windows and bright, clean aesthetic adds value to a cheap but lovely meal. I recommend the byrek if you're in the mood for something warm, or just not into a sandwich or salad. However, I only hear good things about their sandwiches. They bake their own bread and the whole place smells amazing. I'm still thinking about a warm and fresh three cheese byrek.... Their vegetarian options are fantastic. There's a great beverage selection, whether it's coffee and tea drinks, kombucha, flavored sparkling water, local brews, or mimosa-style cocktails. For a place that isn't a coffeeshop, they make a great latte. The pastry choices are less basic than average and I appreciate that. I like their chocolate pretzel cookie, and my coworker gave the baklava two thumbs up. The space is clean and requires you to bring your dishes to a box to clear after eating. It's a nice middle level of sophistication, where I feel I could comfortably be wearing anything or bringing anyone - a date, a coworker, a vegetarian, or even a picky eater. I'd go alone but this place deserves more customers!

Yelp
What a yummy yummy place. One thing about me is I love an all day breakfast menu, and this place is cooking up scrambles and sandys to my heart's content. Had my first Byrek ever (green onion + herb) and it was absolutely rockin! A bit of a wait for a to-go order, but about as expected at 12:30 on a Friday in a popular spot! Place was full of happy customers enjoying their many items. The dessert display was calling my name, so I'll be back for more than just a byrek next time. Sweet spot, plenty of seating, right by Seattle U. Absolute delight!
