10 Portland-Area (and Road-Trip-Worthy) Drive-Ins for Beefy Burgers and Swirls of Ice Cream

"This Boardman drive-in is a classic stop for long-haul truckers and vacationers taking a pit stop off I-84. Most visit C & D for the “Bozo” burger, a quarter-pounder of a bacon cheeseburger named for former owner Jack Bozarth; however, the menu also includes things like buffalo burgers, curly fries, and a range of ice creams, shakes, and sundaes." - Rachel Pinsky, Eater Staff

Eat and Drink Your Way Through the Columbia River Gorge

"Dining options get thin the farther east you go, so it’s lucky there’s C & D Drive-In and Bakery, an old-school rest stop filled with equal numbers of kids and truckers. Order a classic American cheeseburger, milkshake, and fries, which come with a plethora of special sauces. The spot is best known for its “Bozo” burger, a quarter-pound patty topped with bacon and cheese that’s named after former owner Jack Bozarth." - Melissa Haskin, Molly Allen

Bozo Burger hits the taste buds hard! The patty is juicy with a secret sauce and the bun is so fluffy it pops ~ the mint milkshake is ice cold and the fish and potatoes are crunchy and tender enough to beat the chains! ⚠️ But the donuts are a hidden minefield - make sure you ask if they're freshly made, the chocolate sauce will hydrate and escape overnight 😂 $9 per person is pretty conscientious in the age of inflation, and the milkshakes are so big they look like buckets! A lifesaver when you're stuck in traffic on the highway, remember to go straight to the burger section, it's easy to step in the pits on the pizza side. It's a must for workers in a hurry, but on weekends, you have to queue up as fast as you can!

Excellent staff very friendly. Good portions of food. The milk shake was huge for the price you would put in the city. The fish and chips were tasty. You can't go wrong with a burger and some house sauce.

Google
C & D Drive in is a place we always stop at any time we are near Boardman. The food here is awesome, reminiscent of old school drive ins from yesteryear. The chicken strip dinner is excellent, and they have an awesome selection of burgers. In fact they have so many burgers you could come here many times and not eat the same Burger twice. The fries taste good, the milkshakes are excellent and ice cream is Tillamook ice cream The views to the West at sunset or phenomenal, with the sky often ripping with color. To the East, you often get beautiful pastel colors, and due to the clear line of sight on the horizon you can often see the Belt of Venus from here at the antisolar point. The restrooms here are clean and well-kept, and there's ample parking in the parking lot. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. The staff is quite friendly, and they were very accommodating when we came in here with someone with allergies. We have been coming here for close to 25 years will traveling down interstate 84 and passing through boardman. We will continue to do so, this has always been one of our favorite stops anytime we're making that trip.

Google
Great spot to stop off the highway. Really great prices and good menu. The Burgers were all spot on, the chicken wrap was decent and the fries were good. Be ready for it to be busy... But if you go the the side that has Pizza (Poppy's) you can order burgers there too!

Renee Wegener

Google
If you are going to order a donut ask if it is fresh or day old. They look good but they are not necessarily fresh. I bought one and left. I only had two bites but tossed the rest of it. Bread was starting to harden and chocolate was sliding off and leaving a watery liquid on top. What little I tasted of it I probably would’ve enjoyed it if it had been made that day. The Bozo burger was OK and the peppermint shake was good.

Diana Brown

Google
These burgers are like the ones from back in the day! Like a trip down memory lane😁 Ingredients were fresh and tasty, tots were crunchy and hot, and the help was friendly and provided excellent service. You should plan a stop here on your next trip through the area. Great shakes, too!

Google
The Super Bozo Burger was no joke.... The meat is good and savory, the special sauce is really good and the bread is just Soo fluffy... Really great stop.

Google
Stopped for a quick lunch on our road trip. Burger was delicious. Service was quick. Guess I can't fault them for a pricey burger since everywhere is pricey right now. But $9 it was a good size.

Yelp
Get ready for a wild flavor adventure! So, picture this: I walked into C and D, and the aroma of sizzling buffalo meat hit me like a flavor tornado! I ordered the legendary BOzo burger, and let me tell you, it was like a party in my mouth! The buffalo meat was so juicy and tender, it practically melted in my mouth with each bite. The toppings were out of this world! They piled on crispy bacon, tangy pickles, melted cheese, and a special sauce that had me doing a happy dance. And the bun? It was so soft and perfectly toasted, it hugged the buffalo patty like a warm blanket. But wait, there's more! The best part? The friendly staff at C and D made the whole experience even better. They were like burger superheroes, ready to save the day with deliciousness and great service. ‍‍ So, if you're up for a flavor adventure and a burger that will make your taste buds dance, head over to C and D for their amazing BOzo burger. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Probably not where you wanted to eat. If you are in need of a restaurant, you can choose this place right here. I had breakfast, and I know this place does not specialize in breakfast, but the breakfast was not inspired. The milkshake was too heavy in consistency to come up the straw. It did, but required forceful suction. I would keep in mind the omelette might not be there best meal, but the atmosphere was terrible.
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
Got the "famous" Bozo Burger and was a bit underwhelmed. My burger was bland and on the small size for the price. I might be less critical if I hadn't waited twenty minutes for a single burger to-go. I probably would have been just as happy with food from the Dino Cafe across the street, and on my way a lot sooner too.

Yelp
Been coming here for years. Burkers used to have thick juicy patties now looks like a McDonald's patty. Shame shame. Used to be a great place.
google avatar

Yelp
If you are ever looking for a place to eat a burger. I highly suggest coming to C &D Drive In.

Yelp
Oh boy.... I think a look at my list of past reviews will show that I'm a pretty fair patron. This place knocks it out of the park, for all the wrong reasons. Tables were gross (food and debris atop), salt and pepper shakers had ketchup in their tops, the food took ages to come out and was mildly warm (cheddar not even melted), "toast" was completely raw bread on one side and soggy butter crisped bread on the other. Aside from the food and the dirty tables & shakers, the service sure wasn't very hospitable. I don't like to say things like this, but I genuinely feel like I'm doing you a disservice if I don't recommend that you eat ANY other place.

Yelp
What's pleasant surprise. A great burger and onion rings. The service was polite and friendly.

Yelp
Ok this has been my go to stop for years! Driving down the freeway my mouth was drooling. I could not wait to get here to get a bozo burger. I walk inside and see all the prices have jumped like everywhere else but then when I sat, down to eat my burger. it didn't look right, tiny dried out patty, didn't taste right, and the joint is pretty (really) dirty. I don't know if they sold to somebody or they're just getting sloppy but really disappointing that my favorite stop along I 84 may not be a stop at all from now on. Actually its officially off the list. FOLLOW UP: I sent this information on to several people that I know, we all stop here every time we drive down I 84 and they have all told me the same thing that over the past few months the same reaction, same feeling that they're done with this place they are never going back. Owners, if you're reading this, I hope you're getting the fucking message. This place has been ruined. If you are new owners, you broke it...

Yelp
Friendly staff good service and try the monster infusion. Green apple and Carmel monster Yumm!

Yelp
Saw their billboard along the freeway and we were a bit peckish. Nice clean place with an old drive-in ambiance. The Bozo burger caught my eye, but was more than I wanted to eat. Then I saw the elk burger. It hit the spot, tasty and just the right size. I was full, but not overly full. Good service, food came out really fast. f you're in the vicinity, I recommend giving them a try.

Yelp
This was a traditional little burger joint in a small town. Service was good. Burger was okay. Not bad...but not tops ! We got fry's and their fry sauce. Did not like the fry sauce recipe. Settled on just ketchup. Great shake! Nice place to stop if passing through for a average burger. Better then the chain burger places

Brad C.

Yelp
Most overrated burger I've had in almost 20 years. $6 for a large fry and you pay extra if you want fry sauce. Not impressed!

S B.

Yelp
Good Burgers, fries, I ordered to go and they forgot my jumbo burger. They were nice enough to deliver it to the rv park. Posting a current 9/10/23 menu for to go orders.

Yelp
There are only a few places to eat in Boardman, this is the very best one of them in my opinion. My first stop in I had the Bozo burger. It is huge and kind of messy, but totally worth it. I have also tried the Fish and chips, I was super surprised how dang good the fish was. The chips are fries of course and match the fish in tastiness. The food here has always been hot and fresh made. My biggest favorite is the breakfast they serve. The Chicken Fried steak dish is a big meal and perfect to get me started in the morning, it pairs a giant well breaded steak with 2 eggs, a healthy portion of hash browns and the entire thing is smothered in delicious gravy. Oh how I enjoy that breakfast. When Ya get to Boardman and you have to hurry back to the road this is the only place worth your time.

Yelp
Stopped on our way home. Kind of a funky set up to come in and order. We waited in line to order, but with two entrances on each side, others came in and jumped the line. Staff said nothing. Team didn't seem to thrilled to be working. They were not rude, but didn't smile or go out of their way for anything. Ordered a jumbo burger. I think it was a regular burger with a huge bun bigger than the patty. It tasted ok, nothing special. I asked for onions and got charged $0.25 for them. Really? So food ok, atmosphere not so great (old and run down). Can't see myself going back.

Yelp
Stopped here a couple times and it's always been busy so there's definitely lots of local love. Burgers are just what you'd expect from a roadside burger stand. They were busy so our order took a minute. When it came out, we got a chicken strip basket instead of the shrimp basket. The guy who took our order was very obviously new so we gave him some grace. Manager who was responsible for making it right was pretty terse and did not offer even an apology for the mistake. They took back the chicken and returned the shrimp. All was well enough.

Melissa R.

Yelp
Good food, reasonable prices, and a convenient location. A regular road trip stop for us!
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
I hadn't travelled this far east in Oregon, but was passing through and made a stop for lunch. Fortunately, during shelter-in-place orders, old-school drive-in restaurants could make a comeback. I pulled up front. Order was placed inside, but they deliver your food to your car window. Bozo Burger-1/4 lb burger w/bacon and cheese. Curly Fries Vanilla shake Tasted like small town goodness and was happily inhaled.
google avatar

Jerad G.

Yelp
I stopped in on the way home from working an out of town job. I had the boozo burger. It was worth in stopping for. Can't say much else about the place because it was to go only because of covid.

Bobby W.

Yelp
Milkshakes are good and the service too, This tall boy with glasses made my milkshake and he was so nice to me and my wife

Lisa M.

Yelp
Environment is very slow, if you love waiting then this restaurant is for you... always call in my order so I can just wait 15 min in the restaurant. Would not recommend at all.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Found this little burger joint on a road trip a few years back and now we stop every time we pass through. I always go with a bozo burger. Usually a small line but cooked to order and for a old school burger drive in well worth it.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
The main selling point for this place was that 1) it's not a chain, and 2) it's near the Tesla Superchargers where we had to wait before continuing down the highway. They're pretty simple burgers, but no complaint in that. The fries and onion rings were good, and my favorite part was the array of motorcycles that pulled in. That's how a know a place is good.
google avatar

Douglas B.

Yelp
We stopped here on our way back home from the Oregon Coast, and really wish we hadn't. This building was incredibly cramped and annoying to navigate, and the food was completely overcooked with the exception of the BLT, which was made with entirely cold ingredients just pulled out of the fridge without even the decency of being warmed up. The best thing to do here would be to turn around and go somewhere else.
google avatar

Mama B.

Yelp
We stopped here during a long road trip. Place is nostalgic and serves old school food. The burgers were decent, a little pricey, but otherwise good. The fries and O rings were good. Had to pay for fry sauce. No complaints on the taste or customer service. Why this isn't a 4 star or higher? The restaurant lacked cleanliness to put it mildly. The bathrooms were gross and had no paper towels. Flies were everywhere inside, tables were dirty and the glass door could use a scrubbing. Outside trash was overflowing. IMO, they weren't so busy that one person couldn't do a lap around the tiny dining area, wipe tables, empty trash, sweep the floor, clean the glass door and tend to the restrooms.

James B.

Yelp
Good burger, great shakes and nice people. We would definitely stop again. We got a couple burgers, a chicken club, fries and onion rings, there were no leftovers. Chocolate and blackberry shakes were thick and tasty.
google avatar

S M.

Yelp
Great food, great service, just a really cool little diner. GREAT Place to stop. .....Shakes are great, burger's are good as well
google avatar

Rob A.

Yelp
After YEARS of going here, I finally realized I hadn't written about it. BOZO Burger.... great burgers, really good homemade donuts, and the best Butterscotch milkshake anywhere. A MUST stop off 1-84 when crossing Oregon.
google avatar

Mary B.

Yelp
This place has great burgers something in our order is always a miss. I ordered the buffalo burger and it was delicious. My husband has the Bozo burger which was also delicious. We have ordered their onion rings before which were good but this time they packed everything on top of them so they were squished but also soggy and greasy. We need crispy onion rings people!!! One last thing.... the gal taking our phone ahead order was super pleasant and the food was ready the minute we arrived!!!!
google avatar

Isaiah S.

Yelp
Great burger super bozo first time loved it. One of the best burgers have tasty in forever
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
Well heard they had good pizza. Stopped there tonight. They need to stick to burgers. The crust was like under cooked biscuits. Staff was nice and friendly. But recommend you have a burger and by pass there pizza. There burgers a good. And they have great shakes.
google avatar

Sherry S.

Yelp
I was sadly disappointed. I typically love little dive drive ins. Food was not great. Price for what you get is horrible and service was subpar. No mayo means no mayo. We were also missing an entire sandwich from our order. :(
google avatar

Dustin D.

Yelp
We we're driving through town and passed by C&D Drive In. It looked packed which is usually a good sign so we decided to stop in and we didn't regret it. Prices are great and the food didn't disappoint.
google avatar

Chelsey J.

Yelp
I love their food and the chocolate marshmallow shake. But they are always out of marshmallow. You would think as much as they run out they would learn to order more. I only get here once or twice a year and they are out.
google avatar

Brian G.

Yelp
Great marketing of BOZO burger. Got mine cold, and I felt like one for ordering it. My bad... Wife's BLT was cold, so we had them reheat it. B= Barely any bacon L = Light colored lettuce, that was mostly MIA. T = Thin/Taste-free tomato Nice big freeway billboard directs you to a "Bakery". A small case of ordinary-looking donuts that might be your best choice - they are covered by plastic-wrap so you can get to them before the noteworthy population of flies. That aside, it was well-staffed, and she was nice until I politely asked to warm up our food.

Jeff P.

Yelp
We've been going to C & D for probably 20+ years on our trips to eastern Oregon and Montana and have always enjoyed their food and friendly service. This was our fourth time through this year and each time it seems like it's going more and more downhill. The last time the food wasn't very good and we had to wait for what seemed like forever, so this trip we called our "eat in" order when we passed Hermiston, (we even gassed up at the gas station next to C & D first). Entering the restaurant we went to the window to pay, only to be greeted by a cashier that seemed to either dislike people, hate her job, or both. I usually tip 30%, but tipped 15% because of her attitude, ...after the entire dining experience I wished I hadn't tipped at all. Our meal still took 12 minutes, which is crazy given how much time had passed since we called it in. We could hear the crew laughing and joking around in the kitchen while we waited, and wondered what the other customers waiting for their food must have thought. Wish they could be that happy/friendly with their customers. After our order was up we had to tell them they forgot our drinks, when they handed me my Coke Zero the server mentioned it might be flat, I tasted it and it was, so I gave it back to her. So then, and only then, did they change it out the cylinder making me wonder how many "to go" customers they let it slide on? As luck would have it, we were still missing my granddaughter's milkshake, which took another 5 mins. The service was lazy at best, the food was not nearly as good as it used to be, and as we left my wife asked me if it might have changed ownership. Our daughter and family stopped on their way back from Montana later that same day. Their text stated that they had a similar experience and it had gone downhill. Sad after all these years, but I guess maybe it's time to look for a new pit stop.

Yelp
Good selection of burgers and breakfast foods. Large hashbrowns portions. They say they offer delivery, but I didnt test this out.

Steve S.

Yelp
Many different names for their expensive burgers that all taste the same.. Ripoff... I tried the tuna sandwich and all it is, is 1 ounce of tuna in the middle of bread.. Ripoff... Their $7.00 "chicken sandwich" is NOT a BREAST of CHICKEN it is a cheap processed chicken patty like the cheap $1.89 McChicken sandwich... That town needs a McDonalds so I can buy a Breast of Chicken sandwich... C & D has NO Competition... They can sell expensive shit-Food and get away with it...

Yelp
First time here- very busy- still Booz burger, fries, and onion rings were very good. Service was fast. As we were leaving we picked up a butterscotch malt- good flavor. No issues whatsoever. Good value.

Mr M.

Yelp
There burgers are not good , there grilled cheese is somehow better and even that is just average . So are there fries , for a quick road stop it'll do. Honest opinion not good , Not bad tho .

Olivia E.

Yelp
it was already a busy day so I didn't expect much. all i ordered was a scoop of ice cream, so I was not expecting to wait ten minutes. as I'm watching the girl finally scoop the ice cream, she sets it down on the counter and closes the glass to the ice cream display. however, the cup was right in the middle of the track of the glass--so the glass went into my ice cream and sliced my foam cup. I watched the whole thing happen. she proceeded to serve that bowl of ice cream to me (the same scoop and bowl) after I just watched it get mangled by the glass case. it was one thing for it to take 10 minutes for a singular scoop of ice cream, but another for her to serve it to me after the accident. should've rescooped it in my opinion.

Yelp
Cute little place to stop between Portland and Tri-Cities, food is just meh... but the place is old school and the food is fine. They are known for their burgers, the Bozo burger, It looks huge, but they are actually really small and WAY WAY over cooked. However, throw some bacon, Cheese, (I subbed in Cheddar for American). Add some special house sauce, pickles, lettuce tomatoes and it's actually not half bad. Onions and curly fries are the best part of they meal (hello deep fried deliciousness) and dipping sauces are great.
google avatar

Lefood S.

Yelp
This Drive-In is underrated. We stopped by during COVID on a road trip. There was a long line and you couldn't wait inside for your food. Socially distancing was required though I was about the only person wearing a mask besides the employees. For how long of a line there was, the food came out fast and hot. The woman who brought our food out was super friendly. We ordered 1/4 LB cheeseburgers and fries with ranch dressing. The fries were crispy and hot. The ranch sauce appeared homemade (versus hidden valley ranch) and was delicious and the burgers were both special order and turned out exactly how we had ordered them. I'm from Wisconsin originally. We have a frozen custard joint that sells burgers, Kopp's Frozen Custard. It's locally famous and people from Illinois drive up north just to go to Kopp's. These burgers were on par.
google avatar

Jonathan W.

Yelp
Great veggie burgers and grilled cheese! Made a mistake on our order initially and really appreciated the staff's flexibility. Cute little location and an easy stop off the highway.

M R.

Yelp
I drove an hour out of my way just to get their fries and fish sandwich. Love the food and the people. Clean, efficient and excellent food.
google avatar

Colleen H.

Yelp
Quaint drive-in burger joint. A real Americana experience, but not worth the hype of all the signage. The burger was average, it with a LOT more bun than burger. The onion rings were very good--except that they had been sitting under the heat lamp for at least 10 minutes . Staff are young (high school students likely) and not well managed. When the girl grabbed the onion rings and put them in the bag and turned to grab the burgers it was discovered the burgers hadn't been started. The kids were more intent on taking orders and making drinks than actually getting the orders out. Not a horrible experience, but we wouldn't go back.
google avatar

Courtney D.

Yelp
30 minutes for a small milkshake. It was supposed to be a hot fudge banana milkshake. I had to ask about it after 30 minutes. It's hard to imagine a person that cares less about her job. She put a slip of hot fudge on the top without mixing it in. I asked her to mix it in and she took it back and omitted it entirely. I have been coming here on road trips for years and won't ever be back.
google avatar

Didie P.

Yelp
Writing this review with one hand, the other hand holding an elk burger. I'm visiting from San Francisco and my family and I are driving to Pasco from Portland. My dad INSISTED on taking me to get this burger. I have never known him to like burgers, so it must be good. The girls answered all my weirdo from-out-of-town questions with a smile and the fries... I can only affectionately describe as crispy AF. It's no frills all-American burger goodness. A great local joint to support on your road trip!
google avatar

Anthony B.

Yelp
I haven't had one bad meal from this place although I did order a chocolate shake and got peanut butter instead. NBD I love peanut butter.

Yelp
You're in the middle of nowhere. Hunger beckons. You see a sign for C&D Drive-In. You take a chance. It's actually pretty decent. My buffalo burger was tasty. Not amazing, but it satisfied my hunger. I also ordered the onion rings and they came out scalding hot. Hooray! This place is kind of a dump, but the food is fairly decent.
