Prime Meats in Carroll Gardens Closes This Weekend - Eater NY

"Prime Meats, a Germanic restaurant in Brooklyn, is set to close after a successful 9-year run. Despite its name suggesting a steakhouse, it was never intended as such. It received acclaim, including two stars from the Times for its 'simple' but 'serious pleasures', and was listed on the Eater 38 and Michelin’s Bib Gourmands list. The restaurant will close on Sunday, December 2. The closure will allow for the expansion of Frankies 457 Spuntino and the opening of Franks Wine Bar." - Carla Vianna

Talking about stepping back in time at a meat butcher's shop, then this is a place to go. Of course, there is some updated minor updated equipment but it doesn't take away from the setting. Their meats are fresh and their employees were friendly. If you want good meats, I say stop by and pick up some.

Delicious! Such fresh meat and poultry from the chicken, steak, lamb chops & kabobs. Very friendly customer service too. This shop is a gem here in Woodside. Chef's kiss! Bravo!

Google
Usually love these guys, very friendly and have good, affordable meat. Excellent service. However, today I bought a pound of brisket and it smelled very sour. I opened it to cook just a half hour after purchase and the smell was prominent. The meat itself looked fine but it smelled sour so I didn't want to eat it... By then the store was already closed though so I couldn't return it :( Better luck next time... I'm not sure if I can still return it.

Lived in Woodside almost 20 years. Bought meat once from Ottomanellis . C&J I bought from once a week. Great service, fresh quality meat hand cut and trimmed to order. And much better prices than the other place.

Google
Great place. Staff is very friendly and know their cuts. They also have a great variety albeit on the pricey side on cuts that you would otherwise find at a cheaper price at whole foods.

Yelp
Still one of my favourite meat markets. I make a special point to go there at least once a month for something special. Don't forget to ask for any bones they have left over!

Yelp
Went there last min 5:39, they close at 6pm. I asked the lady in front if they were closed ... she just looked at me with a rude attitude and rolled her eyes. I understand because i use to work in the food industry. But at least she could've answered me. She was literally getting ready to leave. I gathered myself and got the courage to go back there was another lady whom was very sweet and asked me if i wanted something ask one of the gentlemen. He prepared my meat and i gave him a tip. When i went back to the register.. the rude lady gave me the eye and slammed the paid stamp like Shaq for me to hear. VERY RUDE! So i guess closing at 6pm is they literally leave the place at 6pm. And there were customers still coming in. I love the place except her attitude.

Yelp
To put it simply, a small shop but run so well. Gone here multiple times, fresh meats, reasonable prices and always great customer service. They have almost any kind of meat available. Also, they will slice, dice and grind whatever you want. I have to say they have the best chorizo I have eaten and making it fresh too.

Yelp
Very clean place to buy fresh meat. Staff is friendly and very accomodating to consumers needs. This place is way much better than the Ottomenilli which was just a block away. With the same service and products they are more inexpensive and affordable.

Yelp
Called for price on skirt steak. They said they wouldnt give me the price per pound over the phone. Guess it was that over priced they were ashamed to say it out loud. Called Butchers Block, got a price over the phone and now im sitting on 10lbs of steak for upcoming BBQ.

Yelp
Being fairly new to the Queens borough We have been looking for a place closer that sells quality meats. So after reading the reviews for both this place and Ottomonelli Meat stores I decided to try this place first. We usually go to Plaza Meat Market in Astoria for our meats but since I also need chicken cutlets we've been trying to find a place to get it all in one stop. We picked up the following: 2 NY Strip steaks, 2lbs chopped meat and 4 lbs chicken cutlets all for appx. $54.00. Again I'm about quality not price. My first impression was that some of the meats didn't seem to have that fresh red look about them but not bad looking. The chicken breast which needed to be sliced appeared ok but again not the fresh looking I expected and I have been going to meat markets all my life. I thought perhaps the glass just wasn't clean enough to display the meat which happens with the temperature they get foggy sometimes but unfortunately as much as we both really wanted to like this place it just wasn't for us. Our experience was as follows: The men behind the counter weren't too friendly, they were very loud laughing and joking about customers. As I continued to observe they were very friendly smiling, recommending and servicing to mostly all their Spanish customers. Although I understand and speak Spanish I do not feel that I need to entertain or speak the language in order to get better or equal service. All customers including first time customers should be greeted with smiles not sized up. I continue to observe as my guy ordered the meats and the butcher handling our order used his hands to grab the chopped meat out and put in the plastic bag. when he noticed I saw him he started using the spatula that was there all along. At that moment I just really wanted to say forget it because he had just finished slicing us 4lbs of chicken cutlets! I don't mix meats like that he didn't even wash his hands. Even when he took the pencil or pen to write the ticket he should of washed hands if not using gloves. My guy wanted to give the place the opportunity because again we wanted to find a place closer to us. To make a long story short after cooking and eating the meats. The chicken were ok, the quality of the steaks were very very poor the chop meat was ok but my meatballs didn't feel the same. For the first time ever we didn't finish our steak dinner it was that bad. The meat just didn't cook well and tasted poor. We felt like we wasted our money. Unfortunately from our experience with the meats and the service we will not be returning. Again..., I have read all reviews and that was the reason I went in the first place but from our experience I can only be honest and share it with you guys.

Yelp
The cuts of meat are a nice healthy red, and the place itself is super clean, which is definitely what you want from a meat market. No flies buzzing around the food. The butcher is friendly and knows his cuts. He's also very accommodating, so if you need your steak sliced, ask him. Took some skirt steak home and you can taste that it was good quality meat. I wish there was a place like this in my neighborhood..

Yelp
This is probably one of the best rustic meat market you've seen in a long time , we take pride in customer service and quality with a fair price ,Stop in and see for yourself , Languages are Italian , Spanish , Greek .new owner as of 2015

Yelp
I Love This Place! Their prices are reasonable, they have a decent selection, the shop is clean, and the people are friendly. They love to give suggestions when I don't know which steak to buy. They have deli meats and cheeses, marinated and specialty items, eggs, as well as prepacked and frozen items. Recently, I have been getting specially cut bacon which I put in everything! They have a big ol' hunk of this cured goodness that I tell them to cut into one inch think slices, yummm. The only con, as some people have already mentioned, are their hours. They close at 6 on weekdays, which means I can't visit during the week and they are closed on Sunday. There have been a few Sundays when I had some good meal options in mind, just to remember that C&J was closed. Womp Womp.

Yelp
Fresh, clean, good prices. Staff is very friendly and they can even recommend how to cook your newly purchased slab. There's a deli for cold cuts in the back with your average market prices. Top Sirloin, Sirloin, Rib Eye, Porterhouse, NY Strip steak, Filet Mignon were all a hit. We recently bought pork belly, which we home-cured, then cut into thick bacon slices into the broiler... hmmmmmm. I'm drooling thinking about it. I think I'll try deep frying some next time ;) AND... They have a cat that looks exactly like one of ours! I would say the only downside is they close a little early Mon-Thurs at 6pm. Most people, such as myself get home around or a little after this time.

Yelp
I found this place by chance because I went to a dentist nearby. I was immediately impressed by how fresh everything looked. Bought Sirloin steak, beef shank and pork belly and everything was very good. It reminded me of a Greek butcher I used to go to in Astoria. I wish this place is nearby!

Yelp
Friendly old fashioned professional butcher shop. Clean. Prices fair. Butchers are friendly and accommodating. I feel better buying my meat here than at the supermarket.

Yelp
Very clean, reasonable pricing, helpful staff! I gave them a try and meat is fresh! I will be going back! I wish their working hours during the week were longer so I can get some meet on my way home.

Yelp
We purchased some pork chops and ground beef from here yesterday. Bought four pork chops for $10, and 2 lbs of ground beef for $6. It would have been $16 and some change but they rounded down and made it $16 even. That was nice. Cooked the pork chops today and was super impressed. The meat was so tender and tasty! Best pork chops I've ever made! This, of course, is coming from someone who has always purchased her meat from supermarkets... What a difference! We'll come here for all of our meat from now on. Now, the only thing I wasn't down with was that there was a box on the ground with a big hunk of pork meat in it, and there was a cat walking around... Didn't think that was very sanitary. For that I'll take one star off.

Yelp
This butcher's shop has been here for at least 30 years; it definitely has a neighborhood feel, which makes it worth the price to me. The meat is excellent and there is a butcher who speaks Spanish and another who speaks English (true, you may have to wait a few minutes for Spanish, as there are usually only three butchers behind the counter. I also like that I can ask for them to trim the fat, butterfly cutlets, etc. AND can ask for cooking advice!

Yelp
Love this place. Great service, prices and cuts. Not fancy, but does the job right. Asked for chicken breasts trimmed and sliced into thick cutlets. Saved me at least 1/2 hour in the kitchen!

Yelp
I love coming home from this butcher. I come home with little packages of meats, baby back ribs, pork sirloin, fresh made sausages. I put on my apron, prep my meat, lay it in my dutch oven and I feel like a truly at home chef as I make my family's meal. The meats are fresh and Jimmy and Javier are always happy to suggest new things for you to try. Visiting this butcher is like visiting home. If you go there enough, you'll see what I mean.

Yelp
Somehow I've overlooked this place even though I've been in the area for some time. Great retail presentation, the prices are solid but there is some variance among the other local competitors. The hamburger is by far the best value in the 'hood for fresh daily ground beef. I purchased some ground beef as well as some vacio (flap meat, the second part of the 'skirt' steak which is great for grilling/fajitas) and the stuff is tasty. Recommended.

Yelp
This joint is less fussy / more accommodating than Ottomanelli, albeit with a different selection and closed Sundays.

Yelp
Very friendly, nice fresh selection, and great prices. My boyfriend and I have found our new meat market!

Yelp
Meat was decent, though not great, for the price. Service was a bit standoffish. I typically go over to Butcher Block, but happened to be in the area closer to here. Don't think I'll be back.

Yelp
this review is specifically to point out that they have frozen packets of fatback in the refrigerators on the back wall, as fatback is a pretty specific and relatively difficult thing to find (it was for me anyway). i almost missed it as the man i was speaking to first handed me a plastic bag full of miscellaneous pork fat pieces. but he then mentioned he also had fatback packets which are square chunks of pork fat from the pigs back. the man i was speaking to knew english but i suspect that that might not be a guarantee every time you walk in there (spanish, latin butcher shop). this place is located about 30 seconds from the 61st street (LIRR, 7 train) train station so it is easily accessible. i cannot speak about the quality of the meat as i only got the fatback.
