CJ's Wing The Broaster Kings Review - Mid-City - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"The first thing you'll notice about the world-beating wings at CJ's is that they are some real plumpies—they look like those giant turkey legs you get at the carnival more than they do snack food. The secret is that these wings are broasted, or pressure-fried, which results in a thick, shaggy crust that clings to the chicken like concrete and delivers a ferocious crunch. And rather than a rainbow of wings flavors, this takeout storefront on Pico offers just one: Boss Sauce, available mild or hot, which tastes a mixture of buffalo and sweet chili sauce, with something else you can't quite put your finger on (honey mustard?). Either way, it's proof that sometimes one option is all you need." - Garrett Snyder

"Breakfast meeting at CJ’s Cafe on Pico. It’s like a diner. I’m a big fan of diners. I like hearing people’s conversations, the forks and knives scratching. It’s therapeutic. A diner, more than a restaurant, feels like people are being their true selves. At a restaurant you can present as someone else. At a diner, you have to be authentic. I get a couple scrambled eggs and some good ol’ breakfast potatoes."

Google
This is a great neighborhood spot and was bustling when we got there on a Saturday morning. However there wasn’t a wait and we got our food very quickly after ordering. The portions are huge and the breakfast food is delicious. We got wings and some of Mexican scrambles. The fried chicken wings were DELICIOUS and you need to try it with their homemade hot sauce. There were alot of homemade desserts we wanted to try but we were so full after our meal. That will have to be next time. The service was quick, efficient and attentive which also was a plus.

Google
The food was pretty okay here. I got a breakfast sandwich with turkey bacon and my boyfriend got a burger. I personally felt the sandwich was a little bland, but it wasn't bad by any means. My boyfriend said the same about his burger. The fries were pretty standard as well, nothing crazy to write home about. I'd be willing to check out other options from here before totally writing it off.

My family and I have been coming here for years. Our family has changed over time, but this place has stayed the same with familiar faces and comforting food. It's still our go-to for breakfast spot whenever I'm in LA ❤️

Google
This breakfast was amazing. There was no wait when we went, and we were helped immediately. Everyone was friendly and kind. The food was great! Got the corned beef hash, fried chicken wings, waffles and pancakes.

Want a good Ole home-style breakfast this is a good spot! They have tables outside which to me is a great place to eat your food. Fresh squeezed orange juice or minute maid. I had fried chicken, eggs, and a waffle. Boyfriend had the fried catfish sausage patties bowl of fruit and a biscuit. Everything was so good. This is a must-try if you're in the neighborhood.

Sheyla Martinez

Google
Such a great spot for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They have so many options of food that you are sure to find something. The staff is extremely attentive, kind and fast. I love the fact that it’s not only one person attending to your needs, but multiple people pass by and ask you if there’s anything you need. The food is delicious and freshly done. I love that they have fresh juices available which my favorite is the #5. Definitely worth checking them out.

Google
I’ve been a loyal customer for 20 years. I’ve watched the owner’s kids grow up and take over the day-to-day. They’ve retained mostly the same staff for this entire time, which says so much about management. It’s like home — it’s comfort food. Fresh squeezed OJ, turkey burger with cheese and bacon, and home fries during the week; and French toast on weekends is happiness. Te extrano mucho mi amor - Guero.

Google
We usually go to the c j's on LA Brea.It was my birthday. And i had not been to the CJ's on Pico, clean, nice, and quaint restaurant on the corner. The staff very nice and friendly they sang hapoy birthday to me that was a nice of them i appreciated it. I ordered chicken wings, eggs and grits, toast my mom had spam, eggs and grits. Food was out in a timely manner and well seasoned. We also had iced tea and lemonade, which was very good

Yelp
what a gem! i love the home-y vibes cj's has to offer. the chilaquiles are delicious, their food is well priced, and they have such a large array of fresh pressed juices! i also appreciate their extensive menu with regular diner classics, mexican food, and soul food. there's for sure something for everyone here! so glad i got to try this spot and it won't be my last :-)

Yelp
We both enjoyed our breakfast here. Service was swift. Food was tasty People were extremely nice. Coffee was very good. We were there early so it was quiet. Clearly a place for family's from the neighborhood. Really good. Big menu!!

Yelp
This restaurant is a solid 4 Star in my opinion. There is parking in the back and along Pico there is street parking. Inside the restaurant has a warm traditional style diner with booths. There are a few outside tables as well. The Staff is always very welcoming and friendly. I come here maybe 3 times a year being that I live fairly close. I feel like I always have the same reaction to this place and that is that the food never really hits. I've never felt like the food is anything extraordinary. I think this place a little too expensive for some basic food. Overall it's not bad. I will still continue coming.

Yelp
I had an outstanding experience at CJ Cafe! The customer service was top-notch--my server was friendly, attentive, and made me feel right at home. The food was delicious, with fresh, flavorful options that really hit the spot. Whether you're looking for great service or tasty food, CJ Cafe delivers on both. Will be visiting soon again.

Yelp
CJ's once again hits the mark with a simple soul food or southern breakfast. I had fried snapper, eggs and grits. Of course a bisquit came with the meal. This is a traditional southern breakfast and it the spot. The bisquit's were OK as they appeared store-bought instead of down-home homemade but they were acceptable. In replicating some recipe's or tradition it is best to go 100% homemade, otherwise the final product could miss the mark. Still, CJ's a solid for their array of soul food/Mexican dishes.

TY H.

Yelp
Got the eggs & chorizo which came with rice, beans and flour tortillas. So good. Also got the hash browns. I had asked our server if they were the shredded crispy type (my preference) or the diced potato variety. They were the latter but I ordered them anyway. When they arrived they looked like they had some crispness to them and when I commented on it, the server said he had asked the kitchen to do so. It's little moments like that that make me think service in the restaurant industry isn't totally dead! There's a small parking lot otherwise easy to find street parking.

Yelp
We enjoyed this easy going Mexican diner. Good selection of food Mexican and American. Nice quiet place. Out of the way.

Yelp
One of my favorite breakfast restaurant The fried chicken wings, grits, scrambled Eggs and English muffin is one of my go to breakfast plate. The catfish and bacon breakfast is also delicious. Waffles are fluffy and good, fresh squeezed juices and friendly services! A must try if you're in the mood for good food. This location offer outside sitting and there's street parking.

Yelp
Great food, amazing service, and a cozy vibe! My breakfast was delicious--fluffy eggs, flavorful chilaquiles, and bomb beans! Felt like home! Highly recommend for post cruda!

Yelp
An amazing blend of Mexican and Soul food favorites! Sooo good! Not many places in LA to get fried catfish and grits alongside the best chili relleno I've had in years. Warm and welcoming staff. Fantastic food and great prices!

Justin H.

Yelp
If you love a classic diner breakfast with a super basic coffee pot coffee, this is your spot. The catfish and grits is my personal favorite, but the pancakes also have a perfect fluffiness, and the chilaquiles are pretty good too. It's hard to go wrong with anything here. The natural juices are all solid. The service is great! CJ's is a STAPLE. IYKYK.

Yelp
This review is wayyy overdue--CJ's can do no wrong! There's a reason they've been around so damn long. We've eaten there a handful of times now and never been let down. The service, food, and value-- all legit and consistent. CHILAQUILES! CON HUEVOS! Git in my belly!! Scrumptious as all hell and always piping hot upon arrival. My words won't do it justice, so just order it. Right now. Perfect texture, flavor, filling portion, comes with goodass rice & beans, crema AND shredded cheese, and we always get over-medium eggs which are cooked just right. Oh and it comes with a dinner roll but we get the biscuit. Been wanting to try the huevos rancheros but just can't get myself to stray from the chilaquiles. We usually couple that with a 2+2+2+2 (of course they give you an extra "2" at CJ's). Bacon, sausage (why should it be either or?), eggs (we get scrambled), and great PANCAKES! AND free decent coffee! That they very generously and attentively keep pouring every time your cup is low. We've gotten this with french toast which is pretty good, but prefer the pancakes. Do not forget a side of home fries. Yesss please, with peppers and onions. Breakfast burrito is ON POINT. The last time we ordered it though, was a bit smaller than usual. Not sure if that was a one off, or the new size. Oh well. Still solid. Just not as shareable if so. Still delicious. Got the chili cheese omelette once, just because. Never have had one and I probably won't get one again, but it wasn't bad. Corned beef hash is just aight. CHICKEN & WAFFLES. Massive wangs fried to perfection. Great batter. Best fresh as they don't reheat super well due to the breading, but juicy and amazing. And pretty huge. Great waffles. We usually go midday on weekdays for brunch, and a cozy booth is always ready for us. The owner's son is usually there to greet us with a smile. Don't forget to graciously thank the chef through the kitchen window before leaving & tip well :P Go now!!!!!!

Maegan La Mamita M.

Yelp
My beau and I wanted to try something different for brunch in mid-city. Met Her and Republique were feeling played out. So we decided to venture down Pico a ways and came across CJ's with a healthy line of people outside on a Sunday morning. Neither one of us had looked at the menu. We just added our name to the list and crossed our fingers and it worked out! We were seated within 10 minutes. This place has a greasy spoon/diner-ish feel and the menu has traditional breakfast faves but also Mexican breakfast staples and soul food. I mean the table has Tapatio, regular tabasco and Franks Red Hot sauce (plus they have a homemade salsa - which I liked). I got the chicken sausage, eggs and waffle. The boyfriend got corn beef hash and eggs. They all hit the spot and we will be adding this to our rotation. Why only 4 stars? The coffee. It wasn't good. Not even with flavored creamer. Have cafe at home first.

Yelp
Really good food and decent pricing. We had omelets, an order of their 2222, oxtail, and fried catfish. All was delicious, with great service and excellent flavor. I would say the place needs a little bit of a face-lift. Inside and outside seating. Very friendly service and quick service. Bathrooms and restaurants need updating. but again, really great service!

Yelp
Outstanding neighborhood café. My family and I have been patrons of CJ's for over 10 years and we love dropping in and exchanging greetings with the staff in Spanish. Food is always excellent and the service is always warm, quick, and friendly. There's another location on LaBrea Avenue heading towards the Baldwin Hills area. What an outstanding family business with world class service and a lot of love!

Yelp
Cj's is my go to place for lunch or snack. I love their juices!! Very friendly staff.

Yelp
Just moved into the area a couple of weeks ago so this morning, Saturday, we want to try a local breakfast spot and we are both really happy that we tried CJ's. Parking was really easy, which is always a bonus. They have a parking lot in the back, but also parking on the street and the neighborhood behind are really easy. There was no wait when we arrived because we were a party of two however, parties of three and more had been waiting a little bit. Their menu is large and there are a lot of great choices both classic American dishes and Mexican breakfasts. They also serve lunch, but we only tried breakfast today. The service was very prompt, polite and they were very quick with the refills which is always huge to me. We ordered the Machaca breakfast which was delicious and filled with lots of meat, plus a side bagel, topped with avocado, and one of their specials this morning: the 2222, which was 2 Pancakes, Eggs, Sausages, and Bacon for $12. Also, their coffee is honestly really good. It's better than the coffee I get at work. I'm a huge fan of a few cups of coffee in the morning at breakfast, so it was a real highlight to me. Pricing is very fair, the flavors are terrific, the portion sizes are large, and parking was very easy. We will definitely be back many times in the future as we had a really great experience this morning. I would recommend to anyone looking for a great breakfast in a diner type of setting.

Yelp
Best Location. Turkey sausage & egg white on sourdough toast sandwich. With no mayo or tomato.

Yelp
Great service, pretty fast, super friendly staff.. A lot of food for the price.. This was my first time there and i was super impressed!! Good food and definitely will be back next time I'm in town...

Yelp
CJ's is undoubtedly one of the finest diner-style cafes you'll come across. Their service is impressively swift, and the menu epitomizes getting great value for your money. The servers consistently deliver top-notch service, and I've yet to encounter a single negative experience during my visits, which are frequent whenever I'm in the Pico/Robertson Culver City area. Ample parking is available both at the back and often at the front. In comparison to alternatives like Denny's and IHOP, CJ's shines brightly, leaving them in the dust. In conclusion, I enthusiastically recommend CJ's for its reasonable prices and impeccable service. Positives: Price, service Negatives: None!

Yelp
I used to be a regular here for breakfast from about 2010 to 2016. For the most part, it was usually good, and I always enjoyed it so a friend of mine and I decided to go back after not eating here for about seven years. I ordered a breakfast burrito with bacon and the potatoes on the outside because I just don't like potatoes on the inside. The bottom line with my burrito is I could barely taste the bacon, but on the good side it was smoking hot. My friend had chicken wings and a waffle. According to him, the waffle was decent, but we both tried his chicken wings and they were super big, but they really had a very minimal amount of meat and we did not like the batter. Now the check comes and there's an extra for something, neither one of us ordered anything extra I asked and found out they charged me for was the fact that I wanted the potatoes on the outside of the burrito. I thought it was being very nit picking and cheap as other places I go to, don't charge for that. The bottom line is we were not impressed with the food but the server was good. I doubt we'll be back.

Yelp
Yummmmmmmy!!! Always GREAT SERVICE AND DELICIOUS FOOD!!! Anthony, our server was wonderful and delightful with a great personality . 1. Scrambled eggs with light, buttery and fluffy, sooooooo goood. 2. Grits were not my favorite, kind of dry and heavy 3. Chicken wings are HUGE, lol, but seasoned well and delicious. I think they needed to be cooked a little longer, but that didn't stop me. Lol. CJs is always good.

K M.

Yelp
The food was awful, the macaroni was soggy, the peas were mushed, and the chicken taste like wood!!!!! My young son did it big for his MoM who had been ill. How dare you, CJs, ***k that up! Stop cooking this meal, you don't know how and/or find the 'right' people that can. 3 chicken wings, grits, To add to this review. I ate what I could this morning. It's now 6:13pm and I'm having stomach cramps, food poisoning for sure. I've eaten nothing but this food.
google avatar

Jackie G.

Yelp
Food was delicious as always, Griselda was our server today she was super nice with a great attitude and attentive, Came serval times to check on us and everything was perfect. I love this local corner cafe food is fresh and delish I really recommend it, sometime you will have to wait but ones you are at your table they will Treat you good and you will always have a good time and food service Thank you!

Yelp
I love this little café! They have a breakfast, Mexican, and Soulfood! I decided to get a Chile Relleno and fresh watermelon, and watermelon juice! The Chile Relleno was amazing and melted in my mouth! The watermelon and melon juice was amazing! I can't wait to go back and try their soul food! #thankyouthursday
google avatar

MaiKayla H.

Yelp
It was our first time here, debated between CJs & Philly's, went with CJs. We are so upset. The catfish was very bland, and the potatoes, which we thought were in the shape of fries, were horrible. My goodness.
google avatar

Megan H.

Yelp
Biónico is delicious! The vibe is chill and the food is solid. We love the burritos here, and the salsa.
google avatar

Jenny Y.

Yelp
Got the fish burrito, not very tasty. It was mostly cabbage and needed some sour cream or more salsa inside for flavor. Maybe a squeeze of lemon? Just something. Fries were surprisingly delicious.
google avatar

Trina M.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. I tried to share an issue with the young long curly hair cash register dude...he literally said, "I don't know what to tell you". Never again will I patronize this business. Too many breakfast spots and it ain't all that anyway. Buh-bye!
google avatar

Juel A.

Yelp
Delicious food and Amazing service. We ordered the Chilaquiles, Chicken and waffles and I had the French toast. All food looked very good. No long waits and service for a weekend. I wish I would have gotten out server's name she was very kind. Anyhow I recommend this place for breakfast or lunch.

Joe M.

Yelp
I ordered the soup, and you can tell the food is not fresh. I would even say they are using day-old soup. Save your tastebuds an unpleasant experience and go to a place with good Mexican food. I hope I can find a homeless guy to give the soup, but I am guessing even the homeless person will find the soup unpalatable.
google avatar

Ron F.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast spot in the mid-Pico area, good for lunch & dinner as well. I've dined here fairly often due to its proximity to my mechanic, John's Alfa Romance (Benny is great but I see him much too often). CJ's offers a mix of southern & Mexican dishes. Take breakfast, for example: they've got fried catfish & waffles, chicken wings & waffles, and grits. And they have about ten items listed under Mexican Breakfast such as chilaquiles & huevos, chorizo & eggs, machaca & eggs, and more. I think I've seen pozole or menudo on weekends as well. Everything I've had is excellent. CJ's is fine for lunch and dinner as well. The oxtails are very good. Fried chicken is fine. Service is excellent and prices are reasonoable. Street parking is readily available. This is definitely a good spot for breakfast in the
google avatar

Deni B.

Yelp
This is the sort of place I want to gatekeep because it was so satisfying and a classic diner which is so hard to find in LA. We stopped in for a quick breakfast at 9 am on a Monday and there were clearly lots of regulars seated already, which just immediately gave CJ's a nice comforting vibe. The regular black coffee was shockingly tasty, and they were on top of the refills. I got the eggs over easy with rice and beans which came with delicious fresh tortillas. I ended up scraping the plate clean, it perfectly hit the spot. And to get a fresh breakfast for $10 is so hard to find. On top of that, the whole staff was so nice and quick! Such a good spot.
google avatar

Amanda P.

Yelp
Yummy classic diner breakfast+ classic diner prices= my eternal loyalty. This is my official local diner spot! My partner and I are thrilled to have finally found a local diner that serves delicious, regular @ss breakfast! No long wait-list, no foofy foofy menu, just good old fashioned breakfast at very reasonable prices. It is so incredibly hard to find this in L.A. ! I highly recommend the chilaquiles con huevos. My husband got the chicken sausage combo plate with pancakes. Pretty sure the chicken sausage is homemade, it was so good! The pancakes were nice and light and buttery
google avatar

Rose W.

Yelp
The breakfast was excellent. The home fries potatoes was so good and tasty. The catfish was excellent and I wanted more than what was on my plate. The coffee was very good. The staff at the door greet you with a big smile our waitress she couldn't speak English, but the man that helped her, he was on point and he was excellent. The Avions was nice. They were playing some nice music. The people up in there were all happy and this is a great place to go to grab some breakfast. I enjoyed myself and my friend. She had a great time too.
google avatar

Sheyla M.

Yelp
We came back with the family for some delicious breakfast food. As always, staff was friendly, attentive, and fast. Since this time we were a bigger party, we definitely had a lot of different cravings. Luckily, everyone was able to get exactly what we each wanted and we were able to try each others food. I have to give it up to them on how efficient and quick service is. Whenever you can, stop by and give them a try. Can't dine in? No problem, order to go. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Aleah L.

Yelp
I really appreciated CJs easygoing vibe and straight forward good food. Their menu is large, Mexican breakfast or regular as your option for breakfast. There's something for everyone. Our waiter was attentive and helpful, we constantly were checked in for coffee amongst everything else. The food was great and they aren't expensive in the least bit. We went at 9 with no reservations and we're seated within 5 minutes. You'll have to find street parking. It can get a little scarce. Would I go back? Yes I would!
google avatar

Yelp
This place has gone down hill. I haven't been here in about 4 years, so either my memory of my positive experiences is warped or it's been this whole time. ORDERING: I walked up and stood at the table that they have put right in front of the door. A server walked up and asked me if I am ordering for here or togo. I told them I would like to make an order for togo. I asked the man what omelet he recommended and he said, "they are all good". REALLY? Why not recommend three great omelets? FOOD: I ordered a Spanish omelet and x4 French toasts. I asked for extra butter. He gave me x2 small butters. I asked for more. Then he said, "that's not enough?!" I wonder if he questions people who dine in, if the amount of butter and syrup is enough and debates with them before giving them what they asked for. SERVICE: This place is pushy, rude, and rushed. Whatever CJ's used to be is gone. I got home, ate my food and none of this it good! The omelet was messy and the French toast must have been from a privious day, and they just warmed it up. It was dry and crumbly. So disappointing

Yelp
I order CJ's Cafe LaBrea and have it delivered by Uber Eats to my mom every Sunday. My mom loves loves CJ's and maybe one day I'll order as well.

Sasha L.

Yelp
IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW... CJ's is a long-time gem in MidCity, LA... The OG mom and pop shop. Been coming here with my family for as long as I can remember. The quality of food is a 10. (My fav are the chilaquiles. Boyyy when I tell you the only chilaquiles I eat are my mother's and CJ's...) The hospitality is a 10 to the 10th degree. Shoutout to waitress Luz. She is amazing. Ambiance is so warm. I hope CJ's preserves its interior and exterior just the way it's always been. Every time I'm here, it's transports me to the LA before all the change. If I ever leave LA, this is that one place I could say with my whole heart I'd miss. But then I'd probably take a trip back just to have breakfast here on any given morning.
google avatar

Mariela C.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about CJ's! The food is great, but the service is even better! We visited with our little 1 year old, and the waitress was the sweetest! She made us feel super comfortable even though our baby was making a mess! I tried cleaning it, and she said it was fine! That she totally understood! The food was great, we had breakfast there and the fruit was sweet, and the platters felt super homey. Overall great experience. Can't wait to visit again!

Michele S.

Yelp
Great soups, especially caldo de carne and I love their burritos. Authentic and well priced Mexican food.

Yelp
All I'm a say is fireeeee shh delicious breakfast great atmosphere I recommend bringing a date here
google avatar

Patrick L.

Yelp
Have been coming to CJ's since I was a kid and it's always consistent and delicious. The same staff has been here since then and that's speaks volumes on the restaurant as an employer as well. I've had everything from the simple bacon and eggs breakfast to there Mexican specials like Chilaquiles. Today I got the catfish and eggs and it didn't disappoint. Cool crispy but not over crispy, the eggs over easy and the potatoes amazing. I got the vampire which is a health beverage with beats and a ton of other veggies. The server was amazing and attentive per usual. Overall definitely recommended. (Catfish not pictured).

Yelp
