Two New Restaurants Open at Kimpton Alma in San Diego’s Gaslamp District - Eater San Diego

"The Cafe, Neroni says, was always meant to be the inverse: open all day, bright, easy going. Mornings, the Cafe will offer bacon-egg-cheese sandwiches and grain bowls in the afternoon. Expect crudo and cocktails in the evening. 'You’re in a lobby, you’re drinking Champagne or sipping a martini, it’s very casual,' Neroni says." - Paolo Bicchieri

Visited twice, the first visit wasn't great and my avocado toast was sweet and impossible to cut, but the second visit was much better - the french toast and egg white scramble were the highlights. The decor and plating are very nice, although the benches are much lower than the chairs which feels funny. Staff can be hit or miss, but overall they are attentive and nice.

Server was fast and attentive. Food was very good specially the French toast. Can have you bill sent to your room or pay separately. The atmosphere feel very richly and fancy.

I’m not sure how this place received such high ratings. Friendly staff but the food was mediocre. Ordered vanilla latte, eggs & whipped yogurt. the whipped Greek yogurt which was supposed to have bananas, blueberries, strawberries, & granola only had coconut, granola & some strange looking fruit. Nothing special & definitely not what I expected. The vanilla latte was extremely sweet and eggs were eggs. The food was way overpriced for the taste & quality. I do not recommend this cafe for breakfast.

Sea bass tasted like precooked and overcooked. Rice was either dry or too soft. And the honey sauce makes no sense.

I had the seabass and it was excellent. It leans a little sweet but was not overpowering.

We learned the hard way the reviews are accurate. We went for breakfast on the way out to the airport so it would be quick and easy. They took our order and brought coffee. Forgot the 8$ orange juice. 30 minutes later the server asks us how we are doing. We obviously had no food and she said she would check with the kitchen. A little later she comes back to recheck our order and admitted she had not put the order in to the kitchen. We told her we didn’t have time and had to leave. Still charged us for the coffee. Now keep in mind, there were maybe five other people total in the cafe at the time. Do not recommend. Much better breakfast spots nearby like Breakfast Republic or 6th&G.

While the ambience and vibes of the place are great, the coffee and dessert did not match the expectations this place’s ambience sets. My friend and I both ordered a caramel latte, it was first served quite cold and was never hot at all, bear in mind we did not ask for an iced version. We then asked them to make it again and it was indeed much better. Moreover, I initially asked for a macchiato, the waiter did not even know what it was, which I find hilarious for a cafe server to not even know what a macchiato is. We also had a cheesecake, mediocre at best. Paying 7 dollars for a caramel latte justifies having high expectations for an incredible taste, this was not the case at all. The latte was quite foamy and bland. The only reason I would come here again would be if I had to get some work done while enjoying a comfortable couch and spectacularly clean restrooms.

Ate here for breakfast while staying at the Kimpton hotel. Vanilla latte was made perfectly. The Birria Burrito and Matcha Pancakes were both unique options and tasted fresh with plenty of bold flavors. Great experience! One of the best hotel breakfasts I've seen.

Yelp
I am SO so glad I was given $100 credit during my stay at the Alma because I would've been VERY disappointed and upset if I paid for this "food" with my own money. The Cafe offers seating once you walk past the lobby bar. Only problem is that they don't have service there, so you order through the bartender and they bring it to you. If you need anything, you need to get up and go to the bar. Let me say this: I am a non-confrontational person, but the food here is so offensively awful that even I would've said something. The fact that someone would make this "pizza," put it in a box and send it off is so crazy. We all know what pizza should look/taste like. This was literally a thick, round piece of dense bread with pizza sauce and cheese slapped on top of it. You're telling me you thought this was absolutely appropriate to give? On top of that, it was cold. The steak frites was cooked perfectly medium rare, but again, it was cold. And it had been sitting for awhile because the texture of the meat on the bottom turned to mush from sitting in its own juices. The grilled squash was probably the best thing about this dish. The brisket burger was decent, but COLD. The bottom bun was mushy because it had been sitting. The rigatoni was the "best" thing we ordered. A pinch of salt and it would've been actually pretty good. Wish I ordered $100 worth of rigatoni. I ordered through the bar for take-out and I immediately went downstairs to get my food once they called me, so it's not like I was sitting around after the phone call. My guess is that since the kitchen is upstairs, the bartender forgot about it for a bit and so it sat in the window waiting to get picked up. Anyway, wife and I didn't bother complaining since it was literally free. But wow, please do something about that god awful excuse for "pizza." I'm not Italian, but you know how passionate Italians can get about their cuisine. I am absolutely fuming on their behalf.

Yelp
Beautiful breakfast spot for me today. This cafe located inside the Kimpton Alma offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Decor is light, bright, and boho. Small street side patio for outdoor seating. Street parking or valet. Menu for breakfast has smoothies, avocado toast, and a quinoa bowl for plant based eaters. Lots of other Benedicts and egg creation for omnis. They have fresh squeezed orange or grapefruit juice. Yum! Lattes, coffee, full bar... Our server, Stella, was super sweet and attentive. Loved dining with her.

Yelp
I had breakfast here because I'm staying at the hotel, but it seems like a good choice regardless. The breakfast sandwich and potatoes I can recommend highly. Helpful staff at the bar will take care of you quickly. There are bistro spots near the bar or traditional restaurant seating in the adjoining section, so you can relax, meet, and linger as desired.

Yelp
Took the train from Santa Ana to San Diego to "crawl" the Gaslamp District for my birthday. Only going for the day but decided to spend the night! We stayed at the beautiful Grant Hotel - in the morning we wanted breakfast before catching the train back... and Cafe Alma was 450 feet away. Walked across the street. It's not what we expected - the photos look like it's a little cafe, but it's actually in the hotel lobby of the Kempton Alma Hotel. A few steps down into the hotel past a full bar - open at 10:00 on Sunday morning... we sat down at a nice table in a really nice "cafe". We sat for a few minutes and the hotel manager came over and said, " no one has taken your order yet?" We said we got water... then he immediately took our order. Husband had the Classic Breakfast- I had Avocado toast. The orders were out in about 5 minutes. Everything was perfect! I would definitely recommend this little cafe. Before we were finished - every table was taken. So must be popular!! It's was a bit pricey... but now everything IS!!!
