My partner and I recently tried Cafe Babette after passing it countless times on the weekend and always seeing the line wrapped around the corner. Knowing how busy it gets, we arrived early on a Saturday morning, about 30 to 45 minutes before opening, and still ended up around eighth in line.
Before the doors opened, the owner of this lovely mom and pop shop came outside to greet everyone. He thanked us for supporting the restaurant and explained how the process would work, which was a thoughtful touch. Once inside, he addressed all the guests again, walking us through more than 25 pastry options in detail and explaining the drink selections too. It was a lot to take in, but in a fun, energetic way that made the experience feel special.
I ordered the Carrot Cake Slushee, the Matilda Cake, and a Raspberry Croissant(I don't remember the exact names of each). My partner ordered a cinnamon roll, which I also sampled. The service throughout was excellent. The entire family and staff worked diligently, kept things moving, and answered every question we had.
When it came to the food and drinks, though, everything we tried was overwhelmingly sweet. I took one sip of the Carrot Cake Slushee and had to toss it. The Matilda Cake itself had great flavor, but I found myself scraping off most of the icing just to enjoy it. The croissant, cinnamon roll, and other items all leaned heavily in the same direction, sweet without any real balance or flavors to pull from.
I would love to return someday to give other items a try, but the prices make it hard to feel good about throwing things away. The experience, service, and atmosphere were wonderful, but I am hoping to find a bit more variety or at least something that is not quite so sugary on my next visit.
