The 17 Essential Restaurants in Columbia, Home of the University of Missouri

"Brunch is the most popular meal in any college town, and Cafe Berlin is on a mission to make it even better, utilizing as many local ingredients as possible and delivering dishes in a uniquely homey space. Using meat from Patchwork Family Farms, eggs from Stanton Brothers, and produce from Three Creeks and Stem to Table, the restaurant serves breakfast burritos, pancakes, tacos, a Compost Pile of biscuits and veggies, and so much more. It’s one of the most vegetarian- and vegan-friendly options around, too." - Chloe Konrad

This place was awesome! It was our first time going, we had about a 10 minute wait to get seated. They had a waiting area inside and had jurassic park on VHS playing. This place has an awesome vibe and very nice friendly staff. We were seated and given water and got their fresh squeezed orange juice and hot Chai Latte(both were very good) we ordered the "just breakfast" which had choice of eggs, meat and 2 sides. I ordered side of biscuit and gravy with seasoned potatoes and my wife got the same with French toast instead of potatoes. The over easy eggs were cooked to perfection and the biscuits and gravey were very good!! The French toast was gigantic and very tasty. I would rate this place higher if I could and consider this one of the best breakfast spots in Columbia.

Google
One of the best breakfast spots in Columbia IMO. If you don't get there early, there's always a wait. The food is fantastic. The service is friendly and the drinks are available for brunch! This little eclectic restaurant hosts a variety of breakfast and lunch options. I had the BLT with avocado. It was more like a BLT with quacamole with just a touch of jalapeno for some kick. The bacon was thick cut, crispy and delicious! If you're new to Columbia or visiting, check it out.

Google
Good food, very good service. Admittedly it was on a very snowy morning so not many patrons either. Had the pancake with eggs and bacon covered in apples and sausage. Very good, but I should have had only half- the sweetness got to me. Of course it didn't stop me from eating the whole thing...

Google
Food was great and service likewise. Biscuits and gravy doesn’t get much better than this. Gets a little noisy on weekend mornings after a game, but that’s to be expected.

Met a friend for lunch here on a Sunday. Ordered the Awesome Burger, which I highly recommend! It comes with the best potatoes! Our server, Christina, was fantastic! The place is kept clean because it's well staffed and is very, very busy! Can't wait to return here!❤️

I visited Café Berlin with a friend on a Sunday. While the wait line was expected, we were told it would be around 20 minutes. Unfortunately, we ended up waiting for over an hour. I understand that wait times can vary, but the estimate wasn’t even close, which was frustrating. On the positive side, our waitress was very friendly and patient. We asked if the eggs were pasteurized, and although she didn’t know right away, she made the effort to go to the kitchen and find out for us, which I appreciated. However, the food was disappointing. I ordered the eggs Benedict, and even the English muffin had a sour taste. Overall, the meal was not to my liking, and unfortunately, Café Berlin is not a place I’d return to based on this experience.

Google
Fun and convenient cafe in Columbia, Missouri with some great food and friendly staff. I woupd recommend stopping by and grabbing a spot outside in the shade before it gets too hot. The food was great and the staff were around constantly to help us out. I would also recommend trying the Just Breakfast and the Huevos Rancheros. We also got a side of bacon that was cooked to perfection.

Google
One visit made me an instant fan to this charming cafe. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is college cool.

Yelp
Great Mediterranean breakfast that will not disappoint! Atmosphere: very lively atmosphere it was packed when we came on a sunday morning. luckily we were able to get one of the last tables available. Very cool eclectic decor very bright and warm feeling inside. From the disco ball to the random mugs.. awesome Food: Biscuit & gravy - $4 - perfectly crispy biscuit and some really good sausage gravy.. loved this! Carey Burrito - $10 - 2 Eggs, Feta, grilled apples, potatoes, Tzatziki. Bursting with flavor, eggs cooked perfectly loved the mild feta and the grilled potatoes with perfectly seasoned.. the apples honestly were unnecessary but didn't hurt the overall flavor. Mediterranean Breakfast - $11 hummus,Cherry tomatoes, Olives, scrambled eggs with feta with grilled pita. My daughter absolutely LOVED this dish, this is not easy to find in MO as a whole. So much lighter then something with meat and it's a huge dish. Sauce Tip: Absolute MUST to get the Tzatziki SOOOO GOOD Drinks: Coffee - Good Coffee, loved the different mugs everyone had. Its just something small that gives you the eating at home but not cooking yourself feeling Price: Extremely affordable Parking: Smaller lot for free with some additional street parking and an additional lot available not sure if its a charge though across the street. Service: The absolute nicest staff. The waiters, the busboys, the cooks, the cashier, the host. An amazing breakfast place we will frequent for sure!

Yelp
We came in for trivia, which was fun. But my rating is for the food specifically. It was just okay, nothing special. The service was good overall. Ambiance is like a simple diner with a bar. - Mac n cheese (2.5/5): Not great, not seasoned well. Just tasted bland overall. - Pulled pork sandwich (3/5): Lots of meat, but a bit dry and lacked flavor. It was a good portion size though.

Yelp
A lovely new aged gem with varied food for all folks who come and visit. As a younger individual I can be very thankful to the freedom the waiters have in their clothing freedom, the unisex bathrooms, colors and fun environment. I think the prices were a bit high but the quality of food was too, and a single meal was very filling. I have no advice for this business to improve because I think they are doing a great job and I would be brought back here to try something else on the menu.

Yelp
Inventive breakfast menu- more than just your average breakfast! However, if you're in the mood for a standard like pancakes- they have you covered! Vibrant, artistic vibe; eclectic decor. Service was on the favorable side of average. Be prepared for a wait on the weekend, and you may have to be creative with finding parking.

Yelp
Met up with some friends for a first time visit for lunch. I ordered the Paulie Salad which had a nice mix of greens, onion, roasted walnuts, and strawberries with blue cheese crumbles. The Tahini dressing adds a nice zing to the salad. Another ordered the cheeseburger which looked real tasty. The atmosphere is lively and if the place gets crowded, it can be somewhat noisy. But, overall, it's a great place for breakfast or lunch just a bit north of downtown CoMo.

Yelp
Great staff, great food. Came here on a slow summer Wednesday at 11 and saved a burrito from drowning in delicious thick gravy. Breakfast burrito was awesome, would recommend. Definitely a great place to lick some wounds the morning after a long night but also a great brunch date spot.

Yelp
Cafe Berlin has remained a very popular place for breakfast in columbia well before and well after my time at Mizzou. If looking for breakfast on the weekend, you'll want to arrive prior to opening to ensure you get a table quickly If not, there will likely be a line and a wait. But don't fret, you can have some coffee from the drip bar to get started before being seated. It was always known as a bit of a "hippie" place when I was a student and the vibe and food reflect that in the best way possible. Fresh, local ingredients bring their traditional breakfast dishes to life and fresh squeezed juices are the foundation of their drinks. They have vegetarian options like their sage-based gravy that may be meatless but do not sacrifice any of the flavor. The service is always really good, as you typically find college students and young locals there doing their best to earn a buck. They have a stage where they used to have a lot of live music, but I am not sure if that is something they still do or not. They added outdoor seating several years back that helped with wait times and enjoying the nice weather. Next time you find yourself in columbia, but it on your list as a great place to enjoy a hearty breakfast!

Yelp
Cafe Berlin is a very popular place for breakfast, and I recommend to get here prior to opening especially on weekends. We had come in on a Saturday and there was a line when we arrived before they opened, and a line when we left. The location is in the downtown area so it is convenient for everyone especially students and city workers. The food is delicious and very hearty, mainly serving traditional classics with a few twists. I decided on their tasty Swiss cheese and spinach omelette, with a side order of veggie sausage. It was a good filling vegetarian style breakfast. My friends ordered other filling breakfasts with eggs, meat, potatoes and gravy. They enjoyed theirs as much as I did mine. The service was excellent and very friendly. The restaurant is casual and eclectic, which I enjoyed especially while catching up with friends.

Yelp
The food is wonderful here. A modern twist on the traditional breakfast. The service is fast. The feel of the place is very college towny. A bit shabby chic and comfortable. A small parking lot is available. It gets busy on weekends, so come early or be prepared to wait for a table.

Yelp
Always great food, I have tried many things on their menu and have always been happy with my choice. The service is top notch.

Yelp
Quirky and cool breakfast / brunch spot in downtown Columbia! We first stumbled upon Cafe Berlin when stopping in town for coffee while on a road trip to STL. When my husband and I decided to stay in CoMo a night, it wasn't hard to decide on Cafe Berlin for brunch! Started with a few iced coffees, a mocha for him and a maple latte for me. Apparently the bar forgot to add the maple, but our waitress brought it over basically right after delivering our coffee! Looked like a solid cocktail menu, but with a drive back to KC ahead we skipped the drinks for nows. It was a tricky choice in terms of picking an entree, but I ended up with the Big Boi sandwich. It certainly lived up to it's name! The biscuit was fantastic. The combo of egg, ham, apple, feta, picked onion, and tzatzki was a unique balance of sweet and savory. Definitely too big to fit in my mouth as a sando, so a fork and knife for the win! The husband had a basic breakfast with sausage, potatoes, eggs, and a side of biscuits and gravy. The B&G was drowning in gravy -- which made for a good dipping option for my side of potatoes. Also, don't sleep on the roasted potatoes -- I want to know the secret to their seasoning blend! Parking was a little tricky - the lot was full, but we found parking (paid) just around the corner. We did have a short wait for table - we didn't want one right by the door, as with the opening and closing it would have been very chilly!

Yelp
This is my third trip to Mizzou this year and third attempt to eat here. Finally open and got a table. It's great. The eclectic interior and staff, Jurassic Park playing on a TV in the sofa area, the stage, the full bar, the old steel pipe railings, hot sauces at every table including siracha, metal water cups and ceramic coffee cups, auper friendly staff and great food, all combine to make a 5-star experience. I got the breakfast sandwich and a side salad. Salads with light dressing are my new thing at breakfast, and theirs is simple and very good. The whole thing was great, including the grilled onion and mushrooms. Wife got her usual mushroom omelette and loved it. This place just works. Lots of families, couples and even a table of nurses or doctors still in their s rubs from the night shift. I'd like to come back at night and see hiw the band vibe is. I will also definity be back for breakfast.

Yelp
What a cool place a block from Columbia College. It's not fancy inside it's vibe is cool and laid back . The staff is friendly and informative. The coffee's good and the menu great . Breakfast or lunch . We had the veggie Omelette and the Quesadilla. See photos. Both were very good. We highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Great place and service. There was a wait for the weekend which is always the case. Make sure to stay in the area when they call your name out. Portions are big so bring an appetite. I will be back again. Yummy!

Yelp
The menu made this place an instant draw. That said we had to try the Butch Jones. In essence, the Butch Jones is a pancake filled with scrambled eggs and bacon and then covered in a mixture of apples, andouille sausage, red onion, and garlic cooked in a reduction of spices, brown sugar and butter. The mixture was syrup-like without being sticky. I am glad we requested the apple and sausage mixture on the side as it would have made for a wet pancake. The pancake, by the way, was delicious on its own and so were the tender eggs inside. I enjoyed all of the ingredients together except the garlic. It was an interesting flavor that was neat to dip pieces of pancake in but the overwhelming taste of garlic in the morning was unexpected. We also tried the anonymous tacos. They were a tasty combination of scrambled eggs, onion, tomato, and other ingredients in corn taco shells and with a delicious salsa and guacamole on the side. Two came in the order and were a hit - full of flavor and not too heavy. The server Christina provided great recommendations and was very kind and attentive. Pairing staff like her and interesting food have got to make this restaurant a mainstay in this nice town.
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
Stopped by early on a Saturday morning right at open. There was a short line at the door at 8am waiting for the place to open. This plays fills up quickly, so best to arrive early. Our server was friendly and helpful. We ordered the Anonymous Street Tacos and Butch Jones. The tacos came with a side of tasty salsa and guacamole. The tacos were wonderful for breakfast, warm and flavorful! The Butch Jones is a little unusual, and we were up for something different so we gave it a go. We highly recommend getting the "sauce" on the side instead of on top of the pancake. Having the sauce on the side allowed us to better control the amount of sauce with each bite and kept the pancake from getting soggy. Our experience with this bit of flavor adventure was mixed. The syrup, apples, and onions in the sauce made for a good match; however, the garlic did not work for us. The pancake itself was wonderful.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic. Busy, but it's so worth it!! I've always had beyond delicious food there and I enjoy the environment and people. A+.

Tanvi Y.

Yelp
Great place for brunch in the area! I got their shakshouka and it was incredible. I loved that they added chickpeas to the recipe:) My friend had their ginger orange juice which was also very good! Their parking is a little tight and be prepared for a wait on the weekends.

Yelp
While driving through we were looking for a place for a decent lunch, and we were surprised when we found this non-standard sandwich shop. They serve sandwiches made from fresh baked bread, fresh made dressing, and other fresh ingredients. With a great portion size and fair prices, this ended up being not just a standard lunch, but pretty awesome. The Cuban was delicious, perfectly seasoned, and melted to perfection. With meat eater, vegetarian, and vegan options available, you are sure to fine something fitting of your diet that also melts in your mouth and makes you smile.

Yelp
Great breakfast menu, lots of choices, very tasty. Friendly staff, cool vibe... Suspect this place gets very busy when something is going on near campus. Would like to try at other times if day, too.. looks like they have live music & full bar...

Yelp
I went here a lot when i first moved to como and this morning I was like hmm i guess i havent been to Berlin in a rlly long time but i was soon reminded of why i stopped in the first place. The food is really good when they actually give you some.... no wonder they call this the starving artists lolol like this cant be serious? I didnt know Mixed veggies constituted as literally 3 shards of tomatoes and 3 shards of a bell pepper. They didnt even give me a full biscuit, literally a half. Additionally, Beware of greenwashing going on here! And if youre health conscious ask about what they put in their lattes before you order... the dirty hippy has as much sugar as a soda... not very hippy of them.. kinda makes me question whats going on here. I dont mind paying a lot of money for ethically sourced food and fair compensation to their employees but seriously what the heck! $5 for a container charge?! Lets not lose our way's here people....
google avatar

Yelp
Breakfast here is AMAZING! Service is good and if you are looking for an alternative place to be, the ambiance is really nice. They usually have life music and groups creating great atmosphere in the afternoon-evening. The only one downside is that waiting time can be too much, specially during weekends.
google avatar

Kristina P.

Yelp
Came in from out of town on a Saturday morning! It was bustling, full of students and families alike. I loved the decor and atmosphere. My friend and I took a seat at the bar. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. Now to the main topic, the food, it tasted great and came out moderately quick despite how busy it was! If I'm ever in the area again, I'll definitely stop by.
google avatar

Soumya I.

Yelp
Came back a second time bc that's how much I loved it the first time around. Honestly I should have gotten the same thing as last time but I wanted to be adventurous. Sadly I wasn't a fan of the Starving artist. I did however like their freshly made orange juice with ginger and preferred my seating this time around as well. Tip: ask to be seated a little more further inside. Gives you a more cozy feeling :) Worth the wait. We waited about 10mins on a football Sunday
google avatar

Dione G.

Yelp
Tho so such a delicious stop for breakfast and brunch! The ambiance is perfect and the food is delicious. Coffee is so satisfying!
google avatar

Shelby W.

Yelp
The food is good, the cappuccino is one of the best in the city, and the people you meet feels like the most genuine connections ever.
google avatar

Stefan H.

Yelp
Two words: SWEET BB. Enough said. The sweet bb is my absolute favorite item on the menu. The black bean and sweet potato patty brings a unique flavor, and the sourdough is toasted to perfection and always brings a nice crunch. Get it with a side of their chipotle vegetarian gravy to spread on top or dip into (plus a little sriracha for some heat!) Took me 5 trips here to finally order the Butch Jones. A breakfast burrito wrapped in a pancake with apples and sausage over top? I thought that This surely has to be a gimmick. Absolutely wrong about that. The butch Jones is fantastic! But also massssssive. I highly recommend to get it to share amongst a few people!
google avatar

Shari W.

Yelp
Amazing food! The service is great and you will want to come back over and over. The menu is varied and you won't be at a loss at what to order. The vibe is laid back and you won't feel rushed to get in and out like you do with a lot of other restaurants.
google avatar

Jamie D.

Yelp
First time here and it was just so cute!! Tried the butch jones which was good but I wish I requested the syrup on the side. The gluten free dish we got was the blue pig which was good and savory. They had a lot of gluten free options according to their Instagram page! Our server (Brayden?) was so sweet, attentive, and helpful with picking out our items!
google avatar

Derek W.

Yelp
Love the environment, food, and service here. Love to visit it when going to rose or a talking horses production!

Yelp
Service | Quality | Potatoes (COVID) Service: Probably the worst service ever. First, the website said the restaurant would open at 8 am. We arrived at 8:45 am, and they were closed. Their staff came out and said, "sorry, we won't open until 9 am." Therefore, our visit started on the wrong foot. Despite being the first customers on 4 July weekend, many of the options on the menu were not available, making our experience even worse. Quality: One of the reasons we chose the restaurant is because they tout their vegan/vegetarian options. Monica made a few Vegan changes, and when the meal came out, multiple dishes had meat in them. Therefore, we had to send three of the four things she ordered back. Potatoes: THESE WERE AMAZING. If it weren't for the Potatoes, this place would have gotten 1 star. I'm hoping this was just an issue with the current COVID environment. But, based on my initial experience, I will not be going back until the restaurant is open to business as usual.

Yelp
Good good, not great. Coffee is excellent, atmosphere and service are solid, you will feel like you're in the show Stranger Things. Everything does appear to be made fresh and daily.
google avatar

Sydney H.

Yelp
This breakfast/lunch place is awesome! Showed up on a busy Saturday morning & was told the wait would be 40 minutes, but only ended up waiting 10/15 minutes. They have tons of vegetarian options. We got the Tempeh Ruben, Sweet BB, and shared a pancake. It was all sooo good. Highly recommend!!!!
google avatar

Chloe P.

Yelp
I absolutely love this spot for brunch! The space is great, very fun and funky on the inside with an outdoor patio area to hang out in if you're waiting for a table (pro tip: grab one of their juices and enjoy it out there while you wait. The twist--orange, apple, and grapefruit mix--is so refreshing in the morning). Their food is fantastic. The walt waffle and the short and sweet (biscuit with greek yogurt + blueberry reduction and strawberries + bananas) are my faves. Their biscuits alone are also awesome. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting como!
google avatar

Hanna A.

Yelp
Very eclectic, hippy place for brunch! We have debated coming here so many times! Once my German father came to town we thought this place would be perfect! However we were disappointed to learn the name of the restaurant was just the theme rather than the style of food. The food was also fairly average, like the service. Probably won't go back again, sadly.

Bloop C.

Yelp
Funky little cafe with a great, diverse menu. The only downside was that it was very cold inside.
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
Fabulous eggs Benedict! Like that I could order a half portion too. Roasted potatoes also the absolute bomb! My husbands omelette was huge! He loved it. Worth the 35 minute wait to get a table. Good service, fabulous food. Out of avocado for The Walt, which my son ordered. He was disappointed, should have been forewarned, but impressive meal as well. Basically a waffle sandwich! Very creative. We'll be back! Ambiance is very granola-style.

Sydney C.

Yelp
So yummy! We had the Mo Mosa (large mimosa), French toast, pork hash, and WALT, and everything tasted so good. So much flavor. Great sizes, great prices. Friendly and quick service. We loved it!
google avatar

T T.

Yelp
I had the Just Breakfast meal and I enjoyed it. I requested the veggie option on it, and it worked out perfect. I was very pleased that the table had ORGANIC tomato ketchup. Most often, other restaurants carry high-fructose KoRn syrup--which I avoid. Wifey had the pancakes and she mentioned they were delicious. I am looking forward to visiting Cafe Berlin when I visit Columbia again. Thank you.

Payton P.

Yelp
Really cute and comfortable location near the downtown area. Staff was friends and the food was superb! Their biscuits and gravy are a must have.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, Great service, the energy is amazing and the art everywhere gives it a unique comforting vibe. Such a great place to go for a nice brunch
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere. Pleasant server. (Why two stars and not one) got there right when the doors opened at 8. Ordered the breakfast burrito with guac. Was told that where out of Guac. So changed my order to the breakfast sandwich with sausage and the potatoes as my side. It came with bacon. I had eaten one of the potatoes before taking a bite of the sandwich. I told our server she took it back. After waiting awhile she came back with just the sandwich and stated they where out of the potatoes. The other sides where not I would want so I said to forget the side. Then when I picked up the half of sandwich it had no egg on it. Sad because I wanted to like this place but won't be back
google avatar

Carolyn S.

Yelp
Great place! Not the biggest but the service was awesome and the food really tasty. I had the veggie scramble - loads of vegetables atop scrambled eggs. Had the roasted potatoes on the side that were amazing. Coffee selections were good - daughter had the chai latte and really liked it. Whole menu looked good - from standard eggs and sausage to breakfast tacos and burritos. Average prices but again, the service was fabulous and sets this place apart. Will be back!
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
Great food but if you're going there on the weekend for lunch you need to get there early. We arrived at 12:30 and were told there was a 45 minute wait for 2 and that we may not get seated even if on the list because they stop seating at 1pm.
google avatar

Lindsey H.

Yelp
Great spot for a local, good old-time breakfast. They make biscuits from scratch and don't forget the grits!!

Joe L.

Yelp
Really good place good food great location really nice people right next to the bus station across the street from clicks

Yelp
Some friends were in town and looking for great food with vegetarian options. I found this place on Yelp. My friends said "Funky vibe, great food, quick service! Tasty, delicious and nutritious! " very pleased

Yelp
Cafe Berlin offers a unique menu, exceptional service, delicious coffee drinks, unique cocktaills and the food is delicious.

Yelp
What a terrific breakfast find near the college. The Butch Jones and huevos rancheros were excellent. The coffee and service too.

Yelp
The seating is crowded, ordered Carers Burrito it was Dry and over cooked. Out of Diet Coke. Service was slow. All in all not great.
