Cafe Birdie Review - Highland Park - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Life is hard sometimes. Work never ends, your roommate eats your leftovers and lies about it, and the person you steal HBOGo from just canceled their subscription. And that’s just today. Adulthood is a never-ending parade of trials and tribulations, and if you don’t find those outlets to get you through it all, you might never make it. So thank god for Cafe Birdie - the only place we want to be after a week from hell. Just by walking into this Highland Park spot, you’re immediately put at ease. It’s not small, but the main dining room - with scattered marble tables and wooden beams overhead - feels like you’re visiting your rich aunt’s French provincial home for the holidays. (She might even have drugs for you, but you’ll have to wait a night before she tells you they’re above the fridge next to the Cliff bars.) Anyways, you’re early and immediately notice the crowded bar off to the left and want a drink. Resist though, and instead head out the back, through the patio, and into a detached little building with a bar called Good Housekeeping inside. The tiny, brick-walled speakeasy feels like you stumbled into a private whiskey society, but trust us, you’re in the right place. Its low-key vibe and tremendous cocktails are the ideal pre-dinner experience. Plan accordingly. photo credit: Jakob Layman Back in the main restaurant and thoroughly buzzed from your cocktails, you open up the menu and find it a bit all over the place. Steak tartare toast? Fried Chicken? Pork ragu? Relax, you’ve had enough stress this week. Whatever Cafe Birdie’s menu seemingly lacks in cohesion, it makes up for in sweet, unadulterated comfort. This might not be the most refined cooking in town, but it’s COOKING. The kind you grew up with and ate a lot of at family gatherings until you passed out in the basement watching cartoons with your cousins. And until you’ve tasted it again, you’ve forgotten just how good that feels. This isn’t to say Cafe Birdie is some sort of red sauce slop fest. We’d come here for a sexy date night any day of the week, then turn around and do it again. We’d round up our friends, drink some cocktails at the bar, and laugh hysterically about whether balancing your checkbook is a thing you should be doing or not. Whatever your circumstance (or life anxiety) might be, Cafe Birdie is simply here to make it all ok for an evening. No drugs necessary. Food Rundown photo credit: Jakob Layman Forget Me Not Just because Good Housekeeping in the back has great cocktails, doesn’t mean the fun ends when you sit down for a meal. This mezcal-based drink infused with pineapple and egg whites is an absolute must-order. photo credit: Jakob Layman Autumn Salad You probably either love Gorgonzola or you think it’s the devil’s cheese. But when it comes on a salad loaded next to dried pears, figs, dates, walnuts, and everything else that reminds you of fall, you’re only choice is to love it. photo credit: Jakob Layman Moroccan-Spiced Fried Chicken We have no idea how they cook this, but we’re not ones to ask magicians how they do their tricks. Just order it and experience the magic firsthand. photo credit: Jakob Layman Steak Tartare Toast The steak itself is great. However, there’s a strong lime/citrus component to the whole thing that doesn’t totally work. photo credit: Jakob Layman Braised Meatballs Despite being a touch crumbly, we would get these every single time because that potato puree sex bath at the bottom is life-changing. photo credit: Jakob Layman Pork Cheek Ragu There is no way, under any circumstance, this should be this good. The noodles are perfectly al dente, and the pork cheek doesn’t really require chewing. Order this or don’t bother coming. photo credit: Jakob Layman Black Pepper Tagliatelle The reality is this is a pretty heavy dish. But a dish that you absolutely must order. The pasta is cooked perfectly, and whatever that creamy sauce is on top, we will take in a to-go bowl, thank you." - Brant Cox

Absolutely! Here’s a continuation for your review: "I want to leave a good review for a breakfast restaurant. From the moment I walked in, the warm and inviting atmosphere set the perfect tone for my meal. The staff greeted me with smiles and were attentive . I decided to try omelette and pancake, and it was nothing short of spectacular—fluffy, loaded with fresh ingredients, and cooked to perfection. The coffee was freshly brewed and had just the right balance of richness and flavor, complementing my meal beautifully. I also appreciated the variety of options on the menu, catering to every taste, from hearty classics to lighter, healthier choices. Overall, my experience was delightful, and I left feeling satisfied and eager to return. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a fantastic breakfast experience!" I can’t wait to come back to try the sandwiches and for sure a sweet crepe !!!!

What a charming little eatery. The morning glory muffin was so good I wanted another. The avocado toast was the best I've had, absolutely delicious. Nice variety of coffees and teas, I had cappuccino and was good as well. The atmosphere was comfy with a nice outdoor patio for cooler days. Can't wait to try more of the menu. Will definitely be back often! Support local small business and try this gem out, you won't be sorry.

Lovely place, we've been going since it opened and really enjoy it! Got the mushroom toast today and it was super good, really savory and filing. I've also never had a miss with their specials, glad to see the pierogis are a permanent fixture now! Pictured are the vanilla tart and raspberry thumbprint cookie, they were just too cute <3

Very quaint cafe! Quiche was phenomenal. Morning glory muffin was delicious as well. Lots of great options on the menu and a pretty reasonable price for the quality. I got a large coffee, quiche, and muffin for $15 and it was totally worth it.

Hot day, but nice AC. They had a fire going but think it was for show since I sat right next to it and was fine. I did find it odd but cozy. Almost a diner vibe which was strange but kind of cool? I ordered an "Iced Matcha with Oat Milk" and no food. One of the better matchas I've had. I like that they brought the Matcha out to the table vs calling your name to come up. Nice seating options but wished there were more outlets since I was there to get some homework done. It seemed very kid friendly. Bathrooms are gender neutral, love to see it. Also, the music was 12/10. Very clean. UPDATE! Brunch is amazing! More diner than coffee/cafe on weekends. Sooo many yummy flavors to try.

Google
Highly recommend! I've wanted to try this place out for a while. Was I ever pleasantly surprised! It's an efficient high street cafe with the savor, ambience, presentation and charm to boot. I ordered the Turkish egg and side salad during brunch. I'll be returning to try a lunch entrée. Fives across the board!

My husband, my son and I stopped into Birdies Cafe on Sunday around 12:30pm. We were greeted immediately by two friendly faces, and were told the specials and shown the gluten free options in the bakery case. The place smelled delecious and looked very clean. My son had a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit with tots on the side. He rated his meal 10 of 10. I had mushroom confiet in toast with fruit salad and a lavender lemonade, very delecious!! My husband had a weekend special the Turkish Egg plate he gave it a 4.5 out of 5 only because he wished he had ordered an extra egg 😀 He had never tried Turkish eggs before so he didn't know how much he was going to love it. Birdies has lots of options and offers lots of variety to accommodate all types of diets. I can't wait to introduce more of my family to this yummy gem.

While the birdie cake, lemonade, and latte were super delicious, we did have to wait a strangely long time for a lemon arugula chicken sandwich that was inedible. The dressing on it was DELICIOUS but the chicken itself was un-biteable. The staff was really good about it though and I was refunded for the sandwich. Tried it on a whim, learned the baked goods are yummy, unsure as to whether I'd go back for LUNCH. Cute inside, lots of maps.

Yelp
A comfortable dining area. A great place to dine and catch up with a friend. We took two toddlers and felt it was child-friendly. Everything l ordered tasted great. I enjoyed the Sweet and Savory breakfast sandwich with tots. Their pancakes are sweet as well. The London Fog and Pumpkin Spice Latte were lovely to have on a cold rainy day.

Yelp
The cutest aesthetic. I may be biased because I am a geography major, but the maps on the wall are adorable, amazing, aesthetic, and I assume have meaning! They matched the theme/decor of the entire cafe. Great place to chat or do homework. We took our drinks and pastry to go to walk downtown. The cider was good. I got it cold because it was rather warm outside so I didn't want a hot drink. The orange cinnamon roll/croissant was DELICIOUS! It had the perfect consistency and the right amount of flakiness to it. The taste of orange was very well present yet not overpowering. It was so good. I highly recommend!

Yelp
I visited Cafe Birdie with my husband in the first couple of months of its opening, as I was curious to try the cafe that replaced the Queen's Cuisine. I was quite pleased. There were multiple vegetarian items for me to choose from, and my tomatoes confit with a fried egg on a baguette was delicious and perfectly seasoned. My husband got an Americano, which he said tasted great; however, it was served in a drinking bowl filled to the top and without a handle, leaving no cool place to hold the thing to drink it. The servers were helpful, and while the inside atmosphere was merely okay, it was delightful sitting on the deck next to all the planets with herbs. Thanks to the good food and vegetarian options, I knew I would go again. 4.5/5 (rated on Yelp 4/5) A few months later, we visited again, this time as a group of 3. We each had items from the brunch menu, including the pancakes (silver-dollar pancake sized cakes), the biscuits and gravy with a side salad, the smoked salmon biscuit, orange juice, coffee, and a Mayan hot chocolate. Everything was great--the Mayan hot chocolate was fabulous! Another customer was fishing to us about the coconut macaroons, and we saw at least two parties come in to pick up cinnamon rolls or macaroons for takeout. They hung maps to decorate the walls, and vases of fresh flowers graced the tables. I think this will be our go-to brunch/lunch place for visitors. Upgrading my help trading to 5/5!

Yelp
Cafe Birdie is new and absolutely delish! As you step into this new spot, you will be taken back by how cute it is and the amount of options! Everything sounded fresh and flavorful. The coffee options are great. I got the chicken salad sandwich and it was super flavorful. If you hate dill you won't like it but if you do, you'll be in heaven! You order at a counter and then they bring it to your table of choice. Service was polite and helped me with the menu.

Yelp
Amazing food and kind service always! The dining room is a little small so if you are planning to dine in I would try to get there asap for seating. They have the cutest patio seating for summer months! Inside is super cozy and plenty of outlets available for those who are working or studying. Plenty of parking availability behind the restaurant. I got the tofu curry and coconut rice with a salted caramel latte with almond milk and it was phenomenal!Food and beverage are a little pricey but absolutely worth every penny!

Yelp
1st time stopping in for breakfast to go. Cute place and friendly staff. I had the tomato confit toast- was bummed to find out it had goat cheese on it--which for some reason tastes like manure to me. ‍I'm not sure if there was feta as described on the menu, and it was subbed by mistake, or if that's part of herbed cheese on the toast. All the other ingredients were cooked and seasoned perfectly, so was still able to get it down. Will def try them again-I'm intrigued by the Birdie Palmer I saw on the menu.

Yelp
A delightful breakfast and lunch cafe. Bright and cheerful inside, and a very friendly staff. Coffee is from Sump (St. Louis) and is excellent. They put out a nice selection of baked goods including many gluten free items. Daily specials vary but they usually have a nice house-made granola, scratch biscuits and gravy, avocado toast, frittatas (usually vegetarian), etc. They open at 8 so not for early birds wanting their coffee on the way to work. And, they are open Wednesday through Sunday. Parking beside the cafe is limited (3 spots) but they are very close to the parking lot to the west of the library.

Yelp
This place is adorable and everyone working is so friendly and happy! They have a selection of yummy foods and pastries and drinks from coffee to wines! The food is incredible and unique! I haven't had a bad thing yet from Cafe Birdie!

Yelp
My new go-to spot just because I love the ambiance. The shop is at the corner of the street and also so sunny and cozy inside. Great place to chill or get some work done. Friendly staff. Food and drinks are decent home-made quality.

Yelp
Well, it's been a while and I can say comfortable the food and service remain great and can report the open times are consistent now. Also, the coffee (mocha latte for me) are the best in town. Others are good but this mocha is the bomb. Sooo pleased to have this place downtown!!

Lori T.

Yelp
Service is excellent and their lavender mocha latte is amazing. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
Delicious Lavender Mayan Mocha! Enjoyed the quiche and strata specials. Good service. Lovely atmosphere for a quiet Sunday morning.

Yelp
Had a great brunch here with the family while visiting our SIUE student. Staff was very friendly and helpful! A couple of the highlights for us were the chai latte, hot chocolate, and animal tots. We'll be back!

Yelp
Such a cute coffee / brunch spot in Edwardsville! Great spot to meet up with a couple friends, or quick breakfast with family!

Yelp
Refusal to SCRAMBLE AN EGG is why we will likely not return. Ridiculous. This makes zero sense.

Robert B.

Yelp
It stands out, on the approach. I had a satisfying latte, a zippy kombucha, and a tomato confit that set the bar higher for taste, and feeling good about food and life. The egg on top was like a mantle of arrival, and it was perfect. Everything I wanted and I devoured it without taking a picture. It smells so good! The whole place is full of light. I'll never forget the coconut macaroon with dark chocolate.

Rachel G.

Yelp
Great food and drinks and relaxed setting. Patio seating as well near Main Street. I love the avocado toast and a yummy coffee cocktail with liqueur 43. Service is friendly.

Yelp
Staff was Amazing! Food was Great! Drinks were good! Very cute little place for a conversation or to study on the porch.

Yelp
I was very happy to discover this sunny, cheerful cafe for lunch. The vibe is upbeat, the staff welcoming, and the food was pretty darn delicious. I didn't know quite what to expect when I ordered a tofu sandwich but the answer was a well-seasoned slice of tofu with dressed greens on a satisfying roll. The coffee was hot and rich. I wish that I could have stayed longer to soak up more of the charming atmosphere--and maybe one of the cookies available--but I had to dash. Nice variety of offerings and well prepared!

Emily M.

Yelp
I don't know what angel from heaven is whispering flavor combination suggestions in the ears of the chef, but I suspect it's happening. (You'll know what I mean when you try the frittata.) This place has it all--great service, a cozy, adorable atmosphere, and DELICIOUS (and constantly evolving) menu options. Oh, and cocktails. And outdoor seating. Go.

May S.

Yelp
The place is cute and the i love the location, there was only a few issues that i had with this place. One, is the fact that i can see the kitchen and the staff working in it and no one is wearing hair nets, there was hair in my biscuits and gravy. a little upset but it didn't fully ruin my mood for i know its a risk to happen when you go out to restaurants. Two, the food and coffee flavors are good, but both my food and drink where luke warm when brought to me, almost as if it was left overs. I would come back just to grab a coffee to go but not a preferred place to keep coming back to.

Scott A.

Yelp
Fast service, very good food, and the ambiance is awesome. Good options for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. They have SUMP COFFEE, which is arguably one of the best in the region!

Sandy T.

Yelp
Uniquely delicious!!! I can't say enough about this amazing new find. My only sadness is it is only open until 2:00 p.m., but I also understand and respect the need for work-life balance. I eat gluten-free and Cafe Birdie has won my business. The gluten-free lemon lavender donut is simply scrumptious! The gf tomato confit baguette is amazingly flavorful, chewy, and crisp. I ordered it with an egg, and the egg was cooked to perfection! I cannot wait to get hungry again to try more of their gluten-free offerings. OMG!!!

Zakiah M.

Yelp
I have been here several times alone to dine in and carry out. I've also brought friends to eat and study here. The coffee is delicious (my go-to is a cappuccino). The food is wholesome and tasty, with very decent portion sizes. The ambiance is sunny and calm. It's a great place to study, work, or just chill (there are outlets everywhere!). Totally IG post worthy as well. The owners are very kind, and it seems that they are selective with whom they hire because they are great too. I hope this little cafe stays open forever.

Yelp
I love this little cafe! I'm a sucker for a good cup of coffee - and they serve Sump, which is one of the best! They have a menu with lots of options- love the gluten free selections. Oh yes & some of the best kombucha on tap! Everyone is so friendly and the atmosphere makes you feel right at home. So excited to have this place in Edwardsville!

Bren E.

Yelp
First time in today, lovely, clean and bright inside seating, they also have outdoor deck seating. I had a vegan version of the mushroom confit on baguette with tots it was savoury and delicious, we will be back to try other vegan items. Service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
The staff were friendly and welcoming. The food was good. I had the Avocado toast, plum and blackberry coffee cake, and 2 caps! The Mimosa was a bit on the pricier side. All in all I will go back.

Christine M.

Yelp
I love this cafe! I had lunch there today. The roasted portobello sandwich and house salad were fantastic.

Kristy W.

Yelp
I LOVED this place! Just visited a few days ago. Everything we ordered was so good. I ordered the avocado toast - it was amazing. My partner had the frittata & really liked it. We also got a muffin & cookie - both were so good. I really appreciate the feel & overall vibe - very clean, tidy, organized, minimalist style while still bright & inviting. Bonus: they have high chairs! Lastly - I'm so excited Edwardsville finally has a place like this. I moved here from STL and really love finding fresh, unique, & creative spaces to go for brunch or coffee. Thank you, Cafe Birdie for leveling up our cafe scene! I will definitely be back.

Kaitlyn S.

Yelp
Adorable ambiance. Outdoor patio seating was perfect when the weather allowed. I had the kale grilled chicken with sweet potato fries and it was delicious! Had a nice aioli and blend of savory, crunchy, salty. Will be coming back for it!

Alli A.

Yelp
Such a cute place and very nice and welcoming employees, food and coffee was so so yummy!

Kyle H.

Yelp
Love this cafe! The bakery treats are my favorite. There are always new yummy choices like the oatmeal cookies and Earl Grey scones, along with cafe favorites like the birdie cakes and gluten-free morning glory muffins! Service always friendly and cheery and the cafe is just a sunny place to be!

Kate B.

Yelp
I had a GF muffin that was so delicious & moist. Yum!! All the food looks delicious, I can't wait to try it all. So happy to have healthy options.

Yelp
I was excited to go to this place as it is new and their menu looked good. Took my Mom for a nice lunch, and we both left very displeased. First off, there's no table service for ordering--you order at the counter and share their one menu, I guess they're trying to save paper as they have very few printed menus. We waited upwards of 30 minutes for sub-par food that was cold. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich and my mom ordered the grilled chicken sandwich--her sandwich was cold and not good. I thought the chicken salad was semi-good, but I'm partial to chicken salad. The sweet potato fries were cold and they were out of tots, so my mom wasn't happy about that, lol. The atmosphere is quiet and serene, which is good and the staff are pleasant and friendly. Unfortunately, nice service staff over food is not enough of a reason for me to go back. We should've just went to Panera and we would have been better off. Spent approx $40 for two people to eat lunch and have a drink--2/5 stars.
