One of the City’s Top Bakeries Just Opened a Midtown Cafe — and More Openings - Eater NY

"Pain D’Avignon — a French-style bakery that’s one of the city’s best — opened its first standalone cafe in NYC next door to the Moxy hotel in Midtown. Called Café D’Avignon, it serves pastries, sweets, sandwiches, quiches, and salads, while coffee is provided by Stumptown." - Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya

Google
I found out about Cafe D'Avignon from to good to go. The pastries and bread are absolutely amazing. Their sourdough loaf is crusty, flaky, and chewy. Their almond pastry, very flaky, buttery, the almond filling is delicious and not too sweet. Because of too good to go, I actually come here to buy pastries and coffee. Everything is very good

Google
The best almond croissant I've had in the U.S. Ever. The quality of pastry, quality of baking to a perfect texture and crunch and the amazing almond topping and filling are the best I've had here. The one thing I would improve: the chairs are metal, scraping on concrete without sliders. Deafening. The service is great. Highly recommend take out.

Google
Always a pleasant experience at café d’avignon! Everything I tried is delicious, the coffee is very good.. the baristas are well trained and know how to make good espresso drinks. The staff is the nicest and the most pleasant. If you are in the neighborhood and want to grab a quick bite or have coffee, definitely check it out!

Google
Cute small place to get a coffee and simple food. Friendly stuff and pretty fast service. Try their salter oat maple latte. It's delicious!

Google
Cute cafe. Nice atmosphere. Had a hot chocolate and a slice of cake, which was delicious. The perfect place to relax after much walking down Broadway.

Google
Great coffee and bakery! Used our food n beverage credit from moxy here but it was worth it even paying full fees.

Google
transparently i got this through a tgtg order so i knew i wasn't getting the freshest pastries but for the price this was definitely worth it! i got an almond croissant (not the best ive ever had but did the job), olive oil chocolate bread (couldn't finish because it was too rich for me), and a whole loaf of raisin/nut bread (yum!)

Google
had a delicious veggie croissant and some coffee here! service was quick, friendly. decent amount of indoor seating (for how cozy the shop is). there's a bench outside if you prefer outdoor seating. would love to try the rest of what they have on display! it all looks so good

Yelp
The food is really good here. There isn't much ambiance as I am sure they really benefit from more of a grab and go business. However, there is seating (bar stools only) and it's one of the few places in midtown that has a bench outside for folks to rest on. I've gotten the caprese sandwich and each time it is excellent. I really love the bread it's served on and the other ingredients are fresh. It could use a squidge of balsamic or some other acid to bring it over the top, but otherwise it's great. The pastries all look very inviting, as does the coffee. The service didn't leave an impression as being excellent or terrible, which ultimately is a good thing.

Yelp
Stopped by as a guest of the hotel Moxy. Opted for a slice of the croissant bread pudding. The cake was very dense and the dipping sauce was delicious. The slice was so heavy, but I'm not sure I could eat all of it and one sitting. The location was very convenient to the hotel and very busy with lots of hotel guests and regular customers. Small inside but perfectt for grab and go.

Yelp
Darlings! This place is legit! Absolutely delicious and fresh soups, sandwiches, pastry and whatever tickles your fancy. Thank me later.
google avatar

Yelp
latte was a little bitter which is odd since they use Stumptown. Perhaps the group head/screens need cleaning or a system flush. Pain Suisse au Chocolat looks so perfect it could have come off a machine. It was OK, but nothing special. Srrvice is fast and friendly. You won't hate C D'Av, but there are better places in Manhattan.

Yelp
I was in the area and found the cafe still has some Too Good To Go deals. The space is bright and clean. A very nice place to chill in the busy midtown. I showed the staff about the deal I purchased which costs $4.99 for some random bake goods. The staff is very nice and started pack the bag right away from the counter. I got a whole loaf of bread (forgot to take pic), one sandwich with ham and one cranberry cookie and one plum galette. What a generous deal! I tried the cranberry cookie and it is amazing! It's soft, moist and full of cranberries but not too sweet. Just perfect! I will definitely come back and try their other goodies!

Yelp
Omg, the focaccia samples work! I came in to get a coffee and something for breakfast, a flatbread, which was delicious, and tried the focaccia, as I headed to nearby Robbie's for a tux. I had to return a couple of days later to try the mortadella on the focaccia. So good! Staff was on point and quick with making the drinks and bagging the tasty treats they serve.

Yelp
What a beautiful space! My husband and I stayed at this hotel and had a $30 food/beverage credit so I came down to get the amazing croissants that we were told about when we checked in. I ordered two- the almond croissant and the ham/gruyere. They came out to $15 total. Drip coffee was self serve, free, and yummy. Any other coffee beverages (latte, cappuccino, etc) were not free. The croissants were delicious and reminded me of the ones I had in Avignon, France! Well done!

Yelp
So glad I stopped here. As a Moxy guest I stopped in for coffee pastry and juice second morning. All great later took the quiche for a picnic lunch in Central Park. Huge serving. Love the almond slices
google avatar

Tiffany H.

Yelp
As you open the door and walk to the aroma of fresh baked croissant! Soo good. It's the best way to start my morning!
google avatar

Avery D.

Yelp
I used To Good To Go for the first time here and got everything in the picture for $5! Was so surprised and excited. The sourdough is amazing. The sea salt chocolate chip cookies are definitely salty which I LOVE. The cranberry pecan shortbread cookie was very buttery and delicious as well. And the pain au chocolate was great. Not sure what the other loaf is, I think it's got olives in it. Great bakery with great treats!

Yelp
Came by for breakfast the other day and it was a decent experience. Arrived at 6:55 am and the cafe opened their door at 7:15 am despite showing 7 am on the front door... Started off with a latte and it was great. Foam was excellent, temperature was on the warmer side and espresso was smooth. The warm chocolate croissant was world class very flaky, buttery, and hot out of the oven. The spinach quiche was reheated and was mediocre. It contained a ton of nuts... The side salad looked withered. The kouign amann was also delicious with excellent croissant-like dough topped with sugar! Staff were all wearing uniforms and masks for safety! They do take Mastercard!

Yelp
Loved the French pastries here! What a hidden gem. I walked by it tons of times without realizing there was a cafe here. That almond croissant is LEGIT. Apple tart was also very good. I saw a lady come in just to pick up a baguette - and it looked great also. The people working here are friendly.

Zoie V.

Yelp
SUCH A GOOD CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE!! My favorite on the east coast! It had such a great flavor and a great texture
google avatar

Theresa C.

Yelp
Had an interesting latte here with rosewater flavoring. I'm not much of a coffee drinker, but it was good. The pastries on display look yummy. May have to return.

Naomi W.

Yelp
Best almond chocolate croissants and cappuccino. Lots of pastry options and fast service. My go to bakery when I'm in NY.
google avatar

Yelp
Was craving avocado toast and my other go to spot didn't have avocado so I ended up here. I'm so glad I did as this place was great. I got a maple oat latter which was delicious and my avocado toast was delicious too. They give a huge piece as well.
google avatar

Lunas B.

Yelp
The ham and butter baguette sandwich tastes just like cafes in Paris! The ham is tasty and not too salty. The baguette is very chewy and not hard.
google avatar

Melissa W.

Yelp
Went here on a whim and totally floored at how delicious everything was! Got a slice of banana bread, chocolate chip sea salt cookie and half a loaf of sour dough. Its hard to even choose a favorite bc everything was fresh and moist. I would get it all again! Might have a new fav bakery.
google avatar

Scott O.

Yelp
Really good bakery and grab n go breakfast items. Their breakfast sandwiches are really good and the service is fast. Coffee is also excellent, though only drawback is that they don't have a discounted refill price. Not much room for seating inside, so would recommend planning a take out order.
google avatar

Morgan S.

Yelp
Went in today and they were so friendly and made the Best vanilla latte The food looked good too! Cute little bakery next to the Moxy hotel
google avatar

Carmen B.

Yelp
We stayed at the Moxy Hotel next door and visited this cafe for breakfast. They have amazing coffee and pastries. Their almond chocolate croissant was to die for! I also ordered the avocado toast with eggs and it was delicious. Definitely shareable. Very crowded since its a small cafe. Pass by if you are in the area.
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
Fantastic avocado toast worth a trip! This is the most flavorful I have had and the toast was crunchy and tasty. The quiche was excellent and both came with salads and the dressing was different but great. Yes, I will be back!

Mike T.

Yelp
Very convenient next door to the Moxy. Part of our resort package. Great pastries and other food items. And great coffee and simply the NICEST PEOPLE working there.
google avatar

Yelp
I stayed around this place and stopped by quick a bite with friends. This place is good for eat breakfast menus or only for breads. They croissant was really good and savory. It one of the best croissant I ever had. We tried also chai, macchiato, ice coffee but ice coffee wasn't good than I expected. Macchiato was creamy and smooth tasted. Pretty clean place but they chairs weren't comfortable. You can see the when they bake breads. I thought it's a nice to see and could trust their breads was fresh. I would give this place 2.5star if I could. Only for croissant 5star.
google avatar

Rosanne Y.

Yelp
One of the best baguette in the city. It reminds me of Paris. Great croissants too. Definitely worth it. Check it out!

Yelp
Can't believe I didn't know this place existed until someone introduced me to it. There are too many good things on the menu so I'll help you choose with my Top 5 items I tried: 1) Quiche Lorraine-with country bacon! 2) Russ & Daughters (!) Smoked Salmon Sandwich with fresh creme fraiche and lemon zest, which really makes the difference 3) Cornmeal Crusted Olive Oil Cake 4) Chocolate Chip Cookie with Sea Salt 5) Cranberry Pecan Shortbread Cookie- this was rated one of the 10 best cookies in NYC by USA Today and it is! Can't make it to the Moxy, they also have locations in LES, Brooklyn and the Plaza!

Tiffany G.

Yelp
The donuts are MASSIVE and to die for. They're so thick and fluffy. Get the ones filled with mascarpone and caramel and it will change your life! We also tried the cannoli and it was good but not great. Staff was very friendly. Cute little atmosphere.

Yelp
You know this place is legit when you accidentally leave an Apple tart out, turn around for literally 2 seconds... and your cat makes off with it and noms it so fast that you barely even realize what the f* just happened... BONUS points: Pretty convenient location next to Penn station so I was able to swing by before getting on the train. I know of Cafe D'avignon from the DeKalb / Bklyn location and was super happy to see this one pop up because their pastries and bread are just SO good. I like that they have delish classics that are on point and they stick with it - they're not just chasing Insta likes all day e'rryday. My personal TOP faves are the seeded sourdough bread, Apple tart (duh), and croissants (baklava!). Oh and...Stumptown is always a nice addition because, coffee.

Yelp
The address listed is for the Moxie Hotel as per their other in-hotel places (Legasea, egghead, whatever comes next.) If you are having issues finding this small bakery, it's small and closer to Legasea on 7th avenue. After checking what something else was (with a little bit of difficulty,) I ordered a Kouign Amann which was 3.25. I was pleasantly surprised that there was no tax. For anyone who doesn't know, this is the pastry that inspired the cronut. It's a Breton butter cake with a lot of sugar also. I've had this from other places and this was a good variation. Very flaky crust. I think the inside could have had a sightly better (gooey as per other places) texture but otherwise, it was very tasty and definitely worth it for the price. For people more into coffee, they have stumptown also and I assume their coffee drinks have no tax also. There's also bread loafs, some sandwiches, and of course a lot of different French pastries. The most interesting thing I saw was a baklava croissant though it was pricey. I am kind of surprised they added this place as their breakfast goods are miles better then anything else in the immediate block or two. As the place is new, I'll stick with a bare 5 though as per usual, I'd prefer to give them a 4.5.

Yelp
Stayed at Moxy and visited this bakery next door. So surprised their almond croissant was one of the best! Just stumbled on it without excessive Yelp searching! We got a spinach quiche for the baby and it was really good too. Savory with a little sweet with raisin and almond, interesting. Lots of people ordering it. Also got a Turkey blt sandwich for a picnic later, it was well balanced and tomatoes and lettuce were fresh. The vanilla latte hot was also one of the best I've had. Perfect foam and creaminess, lightly sweet. Chefs kiss!

Yelp
I like cafe d'Avignon. My first introduction was the location at Dekalb Market Hall in downtown Brooklyn. I was in Midtown and needed a quick petit dej to kill time and stumbled on cafe d'Avignon. It's on the pricier side, but to be expected. However, the quality seems to match the pricing. My decaf oat latte was delicious and comparable to the ones I get that are about a dollar cheaper in other cafes. I also ordered a sticky pastry warmed which they not so cleverly placed in a paper bag. I basically shared the pastry with the paper bag and had to discard the rest that had stuck to the bag although I dined in. Next time I'll ask if they have a plate.
google avatar

Madeleine B.

Yelp
After coming back and trying a lot more things, Cafè D'Avignon has definitely become a fave. It's an unexpected gem in the middle of midtown. Everything I've had is good, but the sweet bread loaves are where it's at. Now I can make some good banana bread myself, but their banana bread is something else. If only I could snag their recipe, I'd be one happy clam.... I also highly recommend their honey cornmeal olive oil cake and dark chocolate olive oil cake.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
Cafe D'Avignon is a local chain that specializes in high-quality, artisanal bread. Other than their Moxy Hotel location, they also have shops in three other food halls. This particular location is extremely convenient, as it is within walking distance of Penn Station, Herald Sq, and Times Sq. I love their baked goods, especially their cakes (which I feel are highly underrated). Delicious soft, thickly sliced, and always moist and flavorful! On my most recent visit, I fell in love with their Dark Chocolate Olive Oil Cake ($5) which was topped with flaky salt, giving it a lovely balance between salty and sweet.

Lina F.

Yelp
This cafe is my go-to spot for a fancy breakfast on the go!! I love the cheese, roasted tomatoes spread on a croissant! The other bakery goods are amazing! The coffee is from Stumptown which is a huge plus! Definitely give this place a try because everything is made fresh on the premises!
google avatar

Edwin C.

Yelp
A decent hotel lobby coffee shop. You won't be disappointed with its assortment of pastries and breakfast sandwich options. I recommended the country bacon sandwich and cold brew.
google avatar

Karen Z.

Yelp
Coffee and Pastries are good. Quick little breakfast before working or exploring NYC.

Andrea C.

Yelp
I had chai and a pastry in the small pop up on tue second floor of the hotel. Food was good but the barista had an attitude.
google avatar

Emily J.

Yelp
The first bite into my egg toast and I was instantly at my favorite bakery in Paris. The bread is next level. The organic eggs are the best I've ever had in my life. This is the next big thing in New York!
google avatar

Alex P.

Yelp
Love this place in the morning. Has great chill but very live vibe. They don't serve regular coffee unless you get an Americano but have various espresso drinks. I used to get breakfast here every other day but they serve only baking goods now and some sandwiches. Still worth a try!
google avatar

Linda V.

Yelp
This place is wonderful almost ended up going elsewhere but wanted something light and simple yet delicious and filling. Their baked goods are out of this world me and my friend got the cinnamon cookie so crispy, so buttery and sweet and for the honey cornbread olive cake takes the spot light for sure with it's wonderful flavors and moistness and the little shavings of lemon zest on top. Everything was just great no complaints at all. If your looking for a nice cafe breakfast this is definitely the go to spot.
google avatar

Carabeth F.

Yelp
Loved the coffee and latte's. Stayed at the moxy so we had a credit. We were not expecting much but we're incredibly surprised at the quality of the food. My family loved the breakfast sandwiches, cookies, and pastries. Unfortunately having a dairy allergy there were no vegan options. But the latte with oat milk was fantastic.
google avatar

Dom M.

Yelp
This place is great!! everything was delicious. The veggie croissant is definitely not for everyone, but I thought it was really good. The tomato gives it an odd texture that I don't think everyone would like, but I personally liked it a lot. It's definitely a good place to have close to the hotel in the mornings. They have something for everyone
google avatar

Nico C.

Yelp
Tried the chocolate chip cookie and their kouign-amann. The cookie was good and the kouign-amann was also better than expected. Flakey, though a tad dry, but still flavorful. Also pretty fairly priced at $3.00 and $3.25 respectively. Would def come back.
google avatar

A Z.

Yelp
This place makes a terrible Americano. I get that it's an expresso with hot water but how can it taste like hot water with a splash of bad coffee. Also, I ordered a large and they gave me a small. Luckily I didn't have to suffer through a large portion of a bad caffeine fix.
google avatar

Elizabeth Y.

Yelp
Café D'Avignon is a cute café with nice-looking pastries. There was a little sample rack, and I tried a small piece of the chocolate bread pudding with crème anglaise and a cube of the banana bread and thought they were pretty good. They were not too sweet, which I always like. I ended up getting the chocolate hazelnut croissant, and while it also was at a good level of sweetness, I wished that the filling were more chocolatey. It was dark chocolate (yay!), but I think that it was made by combining dark chocolate with ground hazelnut, so the chocolate intensity was reduced, and there was a grainy texture. I think the filling would have been better if it had been made with hazelnut butter. The dough used was more like phyllo dough than pastry dough--there were large layers that came apart in pieces rather than flaking with each bite. While it was good, it didn't really hit the mark as a satisfying croissant. However, it is probably more appropriate for breakfast than an actual flaky croissant! I think that Café D'Avignon could be a nice spot to work at, but I wouldn't come out of the way for their pastries. (I wasn't able to get their chocolate chip cookie because it wasn't available, so I might go back to try it if I'm in the area because of the rave reviews.)
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
This small bakery/cafe offers an interesting blend of traditional and modern pastries, both sweet and savory, as well as fantastic bread. The croissants are as good as any I've had in Paris. Items seem pricy, but portions are generous and the staff is friendly. In a part of town populated with tourists and commuters, this place is a bit of a refuge for natives. There is limited seating inside, and a bench out in front where you can people watch while munching on your treat.
google avatar

Wing W.

Yelp
Prompt service. Line moves quick. Smells like pastry shop! Latte had robust espresso flavor. Nice froth. Only complaint was milk could of been hotter. One size. Wished they offered more sizes. Almond croissant was fresh and crunchy flakes. Center filling was not too sweet and moist.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Stumptown coffee and had a wonderful blueberry scone and chocolate croissant, though a little scant on the chocolate.
google avatar

Ira E.

Yelp
This was altogether a disappointing experience We were waited on by apathetic people who did not seem to enjoy our patronage or their job Food choices limited The quiche was still cold after twice heated Plus when we walked in and said bonjour we were greeted with a quizzical look My gosh ... the place is French!
