"It’s our job to keep track of all the latest restaurant openings in the city. So we know for a fact that the team behind vegan spots like Avant Garden & Ladybird is in the lead for most restaurant and bar openings in 2021. Their latest project, Café de L’Enfer, is an absinthe and champagne cocktail bar right above Amor y Amargo in the East Village. It’s a dark and narrow drinking spot with skulls lining the walls that looks like a 24/7 Halloween party. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Yelp
I'm not going to lie. When me and my friends entered this place, I thought it was a voodoo bar. It's not. The atmosphere of the bar is very chill and laid-back with Gothic style decor. Cool speakeasy. It is a little snug but it wasn't an issue. We had a lovely waitress who answered all our questions and gave us suggestions. I don't want to say the wrong name, but she was the sweet girl from Georgia. Fun spot to drink and hang out with friends. If you like eccentric establishments, you'd love it here.

Yelp
Cafe de L'Enfer has a sensual, intimate, and seductive setting. It's a speakeasy with romantic gothic vibes that serves absinthe and champagne cocktails. I must say that this place is very visually appealing. There's crimson red and leather all around. The staff at Café de L'Enfer is incredible. Everyone is pleasant. Our server took the time to explain each cocktail on the menu and made recommendations based on our preferences. Because it is unmarked, the entrance is easy to miss. However, look for a door covered in skulls near the Amor y Amargo bar. 5 stars.

Yelp
Well. I know where I'm going to bring sexyback. *Cue sexy bass* Get your absinthe on with these tasty numbers in order of tastiest to least tasty: La Petite Mort, Une Bete Blonde, Les Deux Visages, Belladonna, Memento Mori, and Necromancer. Bonus points if you ask for your drink to be served in a skull glass...now with skull hand! Docked a star for the too-loud music, which they apparently can't change. But our server was adorable and helpful and made our night exquisite. I think her name was Mia? She had an amazing Gothic '20s look. Come here now that Halloween fever is over. It's still sexy, just less crowded.

Yelp
This place is sooo fun! Very dark super gothic theme bar with a lot of awesome decoration and a crazy door! with emphasis on the absinthe and champagne cocktails! The cocktails were really good!! We tasted a few: NECROMANCER: Absente Absinthe, Elderflower, Lillet Blanc, London dry, Lemon juice ENCORE UNE FOIS Mezcal, Absinthe, Orgeat, Passion Fruit (yes this one is the one with the fire ) LA DIABLESSE Absente, Green Chartreuse, Aveze, Falernum, Lime, Pineapple Amazing FUN PLACE!

Yelp
Oh. My. Heart. This place. Cafe De L'Enfer is a bar designed for my dark, dark heart. Champagne. Absinthe. Dark AF decor? Clearly a kindred spirit is behind this delightful operation. Reservations are recommended, this is a civilized establishment. That said, the three of us took a chance and arrived without one. I know. But one can hardly plan every hour of a Saturday night and we had 9:30 dinner reservations in already. Besides, I reasoned, who in NYC is getting their night started at 8:30? I'm glad we took the chance because the absolutely darling hostess told us that she could fit us in as long as we vacated the table at 9:30, for it had been reserved. And yes, people apparently do get their Saturday nights started at 8:30 for the place was just about full at this point. No matter. We had just enough time for us to for two decadent rounds. A Death in the Afternoon is one of my favorite cocktails here but imagine a bar where a DITA is kinda basic and you have Cafe De L'Enfer. I ordered the Champagne & Passionfruit which is a DITA with passionfruit liqueur. It's divine! Decor: think inside of Elizabeth Bathory's castle meets Liberace's bedroom. Music: thank god they got it right. My fear was that I'd be hearing pop music, but no, darkwave all the way (with a little punk rock thrown in). Service: outstanding! I wish I could mention her by name but our hostess/server truly made the experience even better. Now get out of my way, that table with the balloon chair is mine for now and forever more.

Yelp
Drinks 5/5 Atmosphere 5/5 Price 3/5 Location 4/5 Staff 5/5 Wait 5/5 We stumbled into this place after their sister bar had a 2.5 hour wait and ended up staying here instead. The gothic atmosphere is the first thing you will notice with the candles and obscure projector being the only light in the entire place which lights up lavishly decorated chairs and ceilings. While it lends itself poorly to taking photos, it works well for its gothic feel. Many places go half way with their decor and it looks tacky but that cannot be said here. The drinks themselves were great! They specialize in absinthe drinks and, while that has never been our pallet, we enjoyed it a lot. I'm fact, we started with just a tequila drink and we're not going to get an absinthe drink but the bartender was so nice he gave us a taste of some on the house to change our mind. Speaking of which, the bartender was the best part of the place which is saying a lot. He was super friendly, knowledgeable, and gave us a tone of New York recommendations. The only thing that I would not recommend is the prices. This is pretty on par for New York, and for the quality of the drinks it is still worth it , but expect to pay around 20+ per drink. Overall I would definitely recommend it if you are in the area and absinthe is down your ally.

Yelp
Came here last night with my friends for the first time. I was a little nervous, because I didn't think I would enjoy an absinthe bar, but I was actually pleasantly surprised! The decor is spooky af, but I loved it. There are skulls lining the ceilings, and my drink came in a champagne flute that had a bony "death" hand draping the glass. Talk about creepy lol. The drinks were on point. Our waiter was very attentive and friendly, and I appreciated his honest recommendations! I really wish I could purchase one of the flutes, I could so see myself drinking just about anything from water to my pre workout in that glass!

Yelp
We had a "funeral for my twenties" party the night before my daughter's 30th birthday. Mia our hostess was beyond welcoming and gracious. She was efficient patient and friendly. The drinks were amazing and I thought priced reasonably. The space was perfect for this gothic theme. Thank you for making it a success and thank you Mia!

Yelp
I came here in a party of 5 on a Friday night at ~9 PM. Might've been their opening weekend?? Ambiance: From the beginning, it's quite clear that the place is themed - spooky, creepy, gothic, dark. The door is this large mouth with a tongue sticking out and the actual bar itself is decorated in creepy gargoyles, fitting music, and haunted-ish vibes. It's very dark inside and not well-suited for larger groups. I'd say 5-6 should be a maximum, rather than a recommendation. I PERSONALLY am not a fan of this environment cause it's creepy lol. Secondly, there wasn't AC or something because it was sweltering hot inside... Drinks: Their specialties are absinthe and champagne. The absinthe is a cool idea but not my vibe. The champagne came in these sick glasses that had a bony hand gripping it. Super cool! The absinthe dry pours looked pretty cool but did not try. Service: Everyone was super nice and friendly. We wanted to move tables because a cool-looking table opened up a few minutes after we got there and they were so nice about it! Impression: This place is not for everyone. Could be a fun time during halloween or if you enjoy scary/creepy vibes. Could be cool if you particularly enjoy absinthe. I do not fit in either of those categories. Drinks were all ~$19 flat. If you want something VERY different from the average bar, this is it, but customers beware!!

Yelp
A inquire experience for absinthe accompanied by great service, and a dark, almost goth like atmosphere.

Yelp
The decor and vibe of this place is AMAZING. Dark, sexy, gothic vibes. They were able to accommodate my party of 6 for my 30th birthday as a last minute request which was really kind especially on a Saturday night. We had been running about 10 minutes late, and I texted them with a heads up. The only minor issue was that when we got there, it wasn't the warmest reception from the host. Later, I realized it's just a popular place and she was running around serving drinks as well as seating people and had a lot on her plate. She was really nice after, so no big deal, and the rest of the night was great. Good drinks, mine was a bit too sweet, called Tiki something or other, but otherwise strong and good. Jeremy, who helped accommodate our group, came to check on us a few times and was really sweet. I'm obsessed with the decor, and it's nice that it's not extremely loud. Very comfortable booth seating and chairs.

Yelp
Favorite place in NYC. The decor is stunning. Drinks are strong and tasty. Staff is very attentive, nice and hard working!!! Perfect for a date spot

Yelp
I love absinthe, champagne, and spooky decorations; Cafe De L'Enfer has all three. This semi-speakeasy spirits lounge is up a staircase behind a uniquely decorated door. Philip the bartender plies his trade with panache and a keen eye for detail. Ask whatever questions are necessary to reach your proper destination.

Yelp
What a great place!! The atmosphere was so fun and the space had great decorations! Went for my friend birthday party and we had a amazing time! The staff was super nice and friendly and the drinks were super good and we even got a fire show! Definitely coming back to this place !

Yelp
We stumbled into this hidden gem while trying to find a good spot in the area and now this is among our favorite bars! Amazing theme bar with great cocktails, amazing presentation, delicious drinks, comfortable seating, and perfect level of noise for conversations. I will definitely be back! I never thought I would love an absinthe bar so much! Drinks were delicious and bartenders were super friendly and helpful.

Yelp
My partner and I love absinthe and have a tendency to go to bars specializing in it whenever in NYC but after having a borderline experience at our usual spot we decided to spread our horizons and try somewhere new the next time we were in town and decided on Cafe De L'Enfer. We had a little difficulty finding the place (it's not the bar on the corner but the ornate door next to it) but it was all good. The decor is very goth but not in a cheesy Hot Topic way; it's dark with flickering lights, skulls, and moody, and you can either sit at the bar or at one of the many intimate tables or booths inside. The highlights of this place are the bartenders and the drinks; the bartenders are extremely proud of their craft and frequently create new drinks for their menu and take the time to explain how they were made and make suggestions, and there's a choice of either absinthe cocktails, champagne with absinthe cocktails, or an absinthe drip. I had a drink that was champagne, peach liquor, and absinthe that tasted like heaven and something called "Screaming Infidelities" that tasted exactly like a Good n Plenty and left me proper lit. Did I mention how awesome the staff is? Yes? Well, I'll mention it again because they are truly friendly, non-pretentious, and best of all welcoming to everyone (ie: no "you don't belong here" vibes from staff). Prices are like $20-$22 a pop so plan accordingly because trust me, if you like absinthe you're gonna want to try more than one drink. Looks like we have a new spot because we will be back. With friends.

Yelp
Finally an absinthe cocktail bar in NYC! My favorite is the Armagnac Sazerac drink and the way it is presented. And the Gothic decor takes me back to Paris. Well done, Amor Y Amargo team! Also, special thanks to Philip and Ross for making my birthday truly special. We'll be back for more!

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't come here before! It's so perfectly spooky and the drinks are well made. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
This is my new favorite bar in New York! The ambiance and decor are everything and who doesn't love a champagne bar!?! The service was perfect - great combo of engaging with us and letting us enjoy the experience. So glad the staff at Amor y Amargo told us to check it out! I will definitely be back on my next visit!

Yelp
Really cool themed spot. The drinks are great as is the vibe. Glad something like this popped up in the East Village.

Yelp
Awesome theme. The drinks were definitely very good and worth the hour we spent there. Definitely will be returning. If you are into horror or the occult I highly recommend looking into this place.

Mala C.

Yelp
Best bar in NYC for anyone who likes goth rock and absinthe. :D

Yelp
Oh em gee! This place is a gem. If only I live in NYC, I'll be frequenting this place. Love the speakeasy vibe and atmosphere. So enjoyed the cocktails and Philip is a master mixer! Must go if you are into the extraordinary.

Yelp
I went to Cafe de L'Enfer with a friend on a Wednesday night, we drank two cocktails each and had a terrific time. The decor & atmosphere are unique, the drinks are tasty and strong, and our server was very friendly. The place was about half full, pretty quiet and ideal for conversation. If you're looking for an out-of-the-ordinary spot to meet a date or friend, this is it! I plan to go back to sample more drinks.

Yelp
Great new bar, it's a different environment but who doesn't like new. The drinks were delicious!

Yelp
We are a family of 4 from LA, with two young teens who appreciate good food. Our daughter is pescatarian. We came to Montreal after traveling on the US East Coast and eating in a few "fancy" restaurants in NYC prior to reaching Montreal. We only discovered Cabaret De L'Enfer the day before we were leaving and were very pleased to be able to make a reservation at short notice and have them accommodate our daughter's dietary restrictions. Overall, it was absolutely one of the best meals of our entire trip, both for the red-meat eaters and the pescatarians among us. The food was fresh, creative and utterly delicious. The service was terrific and the wine pairings were also wonderful. I highly recommend dining here if you are able to do so. We felt it really was a wonderful end cap to our trip and were extremely glad we came. A few highlights were the Petits Pois-a dish unlike anything I've ever had and one that was both subtle and spectacular, the grilled Striped Bass-grilled over charcoal and served with an amazing sauce, and the Pommes Noir, but there were no fails. Every course was phenomenal.

Yelp
This is by far my favorite spot in NY. Super sick vibes, cocktails are on point and the bartenders are great to bullshit with too. Literally recommend this place to everyone 10/10
