A Guide to Vietnamese Coffee

"Egg coffee (ca phe trung or cà phê trứng) emerges as a beacon of innovation amidst wartime scarcity. In the 1940s, as sugar and milk prices soared, Mr. Giang, the founder of Giang Cafe in Hanoi, turned to egg yolks, inspired by his experiences at the Metropole Hotel (presently Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi) and the allure of cappuccino." - Lana Tran

An Accidental Stroke of Genius

"Cafe Giang, named after Nguyen Van Giang, offers ca phe trung, a coffee drink he invented at Hotel Metropole by substituting eggs for milk, giving it a thick, eggnog-like texture." - MICHELIN Guide Thailand

‘Undeniably Delicious’ East Asian Egg Coffee Is Poised to Take the Bay Area by Storm | Eater SF

"In Hanoi, Cà Phê Giảng (Giang Café) claims to have originated Vietnamese egg coffee in 1946 when founder Nguyen Van Giang, having run out of milk, improvised by using chicken egg yolk as a thickener; the recipe mixes egg yolk, coffee powder, condensed milk and optionally cheese, is often served inside a bowl of hot water, and—according to his son Nguyen Van Dao—the egg foams and enriches the coffee much as milk would. I also note a richer Vietnamese variation, sinh tố cà phê chuối bơ, which blends coffee and egg with banana and avocado into a smoothie-like drink." - Paolo Bicchieri

After sampling egg coffee everywhere else, I finally got to try it at the OG. It was 40k and the cheapest I’ve paid! Had the hot and cold versions and they did not disappoint. Cold one was superb. Didn’t get to sit and sip but takeaway didn’t reduce the fun. Do yourself a favour and go here first. No regrets!

A culinary must-visit during your visit to Hanoi. A deep culinary history welcomes you to Cafe Giang as you sip the delicious , frothy egg-coffee, which had its origins in this very establishment. Prepare to expect a bit of rush, but they have multiple floors. We loved siting on the typical low stools & sipping our drinks. We loved the egg coffee, the lemonade was good too.

Came here for the original egg coffee and love it. For me it’s more like dessert than coffee but good. The place is packed all the time but no need to wait, so many seats and people come and go quickly. If you come to Hanoi, good place to stop by

Came here for my first ever egg coffee. Haven’t had another since so cannot yet compare to others. Was on my own and put on a random chair against a wall with no table so felt a bit awkward. Luckily was able to snag a table within a couple minutes. Quite hot and chaotic downstairs but guess that’s what to expect at these cafes/the original egg coffee place and good to experience the atmosphere (unsure if upstairs is any better). Think I arrived at a busy time as 5-10 mins later there was no queue for tables so don’t quote me on it always being chaotic. Unsure what to expect but the coffee was nice and creamy, fresh custard taste and texture.

Not really recommended for the service — staff don’t seem to have much of a service mind and the service is quite poor most of the time. However, the egg coffee is quite unique compared to other cafés. It tastes good, but not amazing. I came here because I saw some influencer reviews.

We visited this place because it’s known as the birthplace of egg coffee. The coffee was good and definitely something to tick off your Hanoi list. We ordered one cold and hot egg coffee and I prefer the cold one as it blended well. Just don’t expect warm service—the staff are quite busy, and with the constant crowd, they don’t really have time to make you feel welcomed.

Came here for the egg coffee, and it definitely lived up to expectations. The flavor was surprisingly good—creamy, rich, and truly unique. I also tried the tiramisu, which was delightful: light, fluffy, and delicious. The ambiance isn’t your typical coffee shop. It’s a small spot tucked in an alley, where you’ll likely be sitting side by side with others on small stools. Expect a lively, noisy atmosphere since the café sits along a bustling street with constant traffic passing by

Rly good egg coffee!!! Would defo recommend hot for first timers. Salt coffee was abit too creamy for me but not bad. Nice authentic decor & friendly staff
