A Guide to Vietnamese Coffee

"Egg coffee (ca phe trung or cà phê trứng) emerges as a beacon of innovation amidst wartime scarcity. In the 1940s, as sugar and milk prices soared, Mr. Giang, the founder of Giang Cafe in Hanoi, turned to egg yolks, inspired by his experiences at the Metropole Hotel (presently Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi) and the allure of cappuccino." - Lana Tran

An Accidental Stroke of Genius

"Cafe Giang, named after Nguyen Van Giang, offers ca phe trung, a coffee drink he invented at Hotel Metropole by substituting eggs for milk, giving it a thick, eggnog-like texture." - MICHELIN Guide Thailand

I tried the egg coffee, coconut egg coffee, and an orange juice — all three were great! The egg coffee really stood out. Its rich, creamy texture and perfect sweetness make it unforgettable. I loved this place so much that I came back twice during my stay in Hanoi, and both times the experience was excellent. Highly recommend!

We came here to try the egg coffee and weren't disappointed! The creamy egg yolk on top blends perfectly with the strong Vietnamese coffee at the bottom. Mixing it together was a game-changer - 10/10 for me! However, the service could be improved. We waited a while to be attended to, even with staff nearby, and noticed they prioritized other groups who arrived after us. Luckily, we knew what to order, but we might have gotten more if we'd been served the menu sooner. The atmosphere was a bit too noisy for our taste, so we left after enjoying our coffee.

Came here for the egg coffee, and it definitely lived up to expectations. The flavor was surprisingly good—creamy, rich, and truly unique. I also tried the tiramisu, which was delightful: light, fluffy, and delicious. The ambiance isn’t your typical coffee shop. It’s a small spot tucked in an alley, where you’ll likely be sitting side by side with others on small stools. Expect a lively, noisy atmosphere since the café sits along a bustling street with constant traffic passing by

The original egg coffee must visit! I prefer the cold one, it doesn't taste like egg at all. While the hot one a little bit like custard. Price also good and you can taste the original Vietnam style with the small table and low chair.

A must-try cafe when visiting Hanoi. The egg coffee is fragrant, fatty. The cream melts smoothly without any fishy smell. The bartender is a true artist. In front of the shop, there is a dish of sticky rice cooked with lotus seeds that is quite delicious.

Tried the egg coffee, cream egg coffee, iced yogurt beverages and all were very good. It's always fun to try their menu offerings because theyre interesting and affordable. The place is a bit cramped, as with most places in the area. Low chairs (true for most of Hanoi) but service is pretty quick despite the crowd. Not a place to relax for long since it can get noisy and the chairs are not very comfortable. I'd still come back for the egg coffee. I hope they have stock of lava cake again.

Worth a visit for the experience — especially if you’re curious about the famous egg coffee. I gave the egg coffee a try and it was decent, smooth and sweet, though not quite the mind-blowing moment I expected. What really won me over was the cream coffee — rich, velvety, and honestly *so* good. Definitely get that if you like your coffee a little indulgent! The place itself has a humble, historic charm, but it gets *very* crowded and noisy. Not ideal if you're hoping for a calm coffee chat or a quiet spot to relax. Still, for a taste of Hanoi’s coffee culture and a unique sip, it’s worth checking out at least once. ☕️🇻🇳

Dining at The East Tonkin in Hanoi was an absolute delight! The restaurant beautifully blends authentic Vietnamese flavors with a modern touch. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and presented with such care. The ambiance was warm and elegant, creating the perfect setting to enjoy a memorable meal. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made sure we had a wonderful experience throughout. If you’re in Hanoi and want to taste the richness of Vietnamese cuisine in a refined way, The East Tonkin is definitely a must-visit!
