A Guide to Vietnamese Coffee

"Egg coffee (ca phe trung or cà phê trứng) emerges as a beacon of innovation amidst wartime scarcity. In the 1940s, as sugar and milk prices soared, Mr. Giang, the founder of Giang Cafe in Hanoi, turned to egg yolks, inspired by his experiences at the Metropole Hotel (presently Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi) and the allure of cappuccino." - Lana Tran

An Accidental Stroke of Genius

"Cafe Giang, named after Nguyen Van Giang, offers ca phe trung, a coffee drink he invented at Hotel Metropole by substituting eggs for milk, giving it a thick, eggnog-like texture." - MICHELIN Guide Thailand

Tried the egg coffee, cream egg coffee, iced yogurt beverages and all were very good. It's always fun to try their menu offerings because theyre interesting and affordable. The place is a bit cramped, as with most places in the area. Low chairs (true for most of Hanoi) but service is pretty quick despite the crowd. Not a place to relax for long since it can get noisy and the chairs are not very comfortable. I'd still come back for the egg coffee. I hope they have stock of lava cake again.

A must-try cafe when visiting Hanoi. The egg coffee is fragrant, fatty. The cream melts smoothly without any fishy smell. The bartender is a true artist. In front of the shop, there is a dish of sticky rice cooked with lotus seeds that is quite delicious.

The café itself is tucked away in a small alley, giving it a cozy, authentic charm. I tried their signature egg coffee and it was creamy, rich, and surprisingly smooth — unlike anything I’ve had before. The atmosphere is lively yet laid-back, with both locals and travelers sharing the space. Staff were friendly and quick despite how busy it gets.

The home of egg coffee, it may be, but unfortunately it doesn’t live up to its famed origins. Perhaps I’m being a bit harsh but it has turned into a production line without much regard for quality or service. Very disinterested staff, who were more interested in their phones. Go to Loading T cafe for a better experience and much better egg coffee (see my other review) but not nearly as bad as the egg coffee at the Notes cafe (also see my other review on that). Probably the best part of visiting this cafe is the ambiance of the building and how the plant and trees have become integrated into its fabric.

Legendary Egg Coffee – Absolutely Worth It Tried the egg coffee here and it totally lived up to the hype. Creamy, rich, and surprisingly balanced—definitely one of the best things I had in Hanoi. The place has a cool old-school vibe tucked in a little alley, which just adds to the charm. If you’re even a little curious about Vietnamese coffee, this is the spot to try it.

Try the egg coffees in here with traditional style with local peoples. The place is unique and lots of table available in here, so its mast be crowded in some time. Good taste and very fast services. Reasonable price with good ambiance. Worth to try.

Worth a visit for the experience — especially if you’re curious about the famous egg coffee. I gave the egg coffee a try and it was decent, smooth and sweet, though not quite the mind-blowing moment I expected. What really won me over was the cream coffee — rich, velvety, and honestly *so* good. Definitely get that if you like your coffee a little indulgent! The place itself has a humble, historic charm, but it gets *very* crowded and noisy. Not ideal if you're hoping for a calm coffee chat or a quiet spot to relax. Still, for a taste of Hanoi’s coffee culture and a unique sip, it’s worth checking out at least once. ☕️🇻🇳

Truly legendary! Egg Coffee will change the life of coffee lovers. I have never experienced anything like this. Delicious with a strong Coffee kick. Always crowded, 2 floors of low seating on the wooden stools. People share tables voluntarily to cater the large number of customers. Cakes are super delicious, however, the Milk Toast is always 'sold out', consider yourself lucky if you get it. Tiramisu is great. This shop doesn't make money from the sales of the cakes, the money is donated for children welfare.
