Just a 10-minute walk from Matunga station, Madras Café is right in the middle of a South Indian food lover’s paradise. On the way, you'll pass several small eateries and the air is filled with the amazing aroma of filter coffee and sambhar, it’s a whole vibe.
We visited on a Saturday morning around 10:30 to 11 am. As expected, there was a wait. They told us it would take 30 to 40 minutes, but we were called in about 20, which was a nice surprise.
Here’s what we tried:
Rasam Vada – 3/5
Didn’t really work for us. The rasam was a bit too mild and lacked punch.
Sambhar Vada – 5/5
Absolutely perfect. The vadas were soft and soaked in flavorful sambhar. This one’s a must-try.
Butter Podi Idli
Pillowy soft and tasty, though we felt it would’ve been even better with ghee instead of butter.
Benne Masala Dosa
This was okay. For a place known for its benne dosas, we expected a bit more. It wasn’t bad, just not memorable.
Chaas
Surprisingly good! Refreshing and well-balanced, it paired nicely with the food.
The total bill came to around ₹800 for everything, which felt very reasonable for a filling and flavorful meal.
Overall, Madras Cafe has a lively atmosphere, quick service, and a few standout dishes. Definitely worth visiting if you're exploring Matunga’s food scene.
