"Ask 10 people in Mumbai to recommend their favorite idli spots, and you'll get 10 different answers. Ask us, and we'll tell you Cafe Madras every time. On weekends, especially, locals travel from all over the city to tree-lined Matunga to share a table with strangers for a South Indian breakfast or lunch (expect a wait), and dive into this spot’s fluffy, grainy rice cakes, with hot sambar and coconut chutney. While you’re here, carb load on the folded-over benne pessarettu dosa stuffed with spiced potato masala, ghee-laden sheera with chunks of fresh pineapple, and idli butter podi. " - roshni bajaj sanghvi

"The number of people that this cafe hosts daily speaks of why you need to be standing in queue right away! Cafe Madras is one of the best South Indian eateries around the Dadar area. Popular for its coffee, idli-vada, the variety of dosas and other South Indian delicacies, the restaurant has stayed true to its menu over the years and not fallen to the trappings of popular wants outside of its cuisine." - GAS (The Graphic & Art Studio)

"Cafe Madras opens at 7 a.m. and is promptly packed by 7:01. It’s been a landmark in Matunga for over 80 years. Dive straight in with an order of ghee roast masala dosa topped with white butter. Split a portion of idlis (fermented rice flour cakes) dunked in ghee, chutney, and podi. Finish your meal with frothy filter coffee. Expect to share tables and leave as soon you’re done eating, unless you want to risk annoyed glares from the queue outside." - Sumedh Natu

Authentic south Indian snack. Taste is quite authentic. All of the items are wonderful. You should try Tuppa Podi. The owner and staff are really polite and attentive. If you arrive on the weekend, you will need to wait 30 to 60 minutes for your turn. All things are reasonably priced.

We went to this place on Saturday with my Mumbai Friend, I had fast and hadn't eaten anything since morning, we had to wait for quite some time as it was Saturday but once we were inside we ordered Mendu wada, mysore masala dosa and belebee rice. I enjoyed the crisp mendu wada the most along with the chutney. I liked chutney more than the sambhar. We ordered extra chutney and had ensured that we fill our tummy. Over all nice experience. Only table sharing with strangers but It is ok else you would have to wait more. It was good south indian food at this place. Seating can be improved..

Visited this place with my Mumma because she is a big fan of South Indian cuisine. But to our surprise we didn’t like this place much as we have loved Ramashraya🙂 So, in all Ramashraya is till now the best south indian food near mumbai and I bet its better than cafe madras too! The items which I found different at both outlets were spicy nai roast dosa, pan poli (not available). Waiting- yes, one needs to queue up even in morning time but its only for 10mins not more if a group of small people Location- 10mins walking from Matunga station.

South joints are Matunga go to spots.. But madras cafe stands out. Must try is Upma podi.. Even non उपमा people will cherish it. You get all set in menu. Old fashioned yet beautiful. Limited seats.. Super fast service. Filter coffee 👌

If you want to enjoy most authentic Veg South Indian dishes in Mumbai, then you should not look beyond this place. Normally it is always crowded. We got our table after five minutes of waiting. We had Steam Idli Sambar, Medu Vada, Rasam Vada, Mysore Masala Dosa, and Pessarettu Dosa(Moong Dal Chilra). Each and every item was excellent. Then we had Pineapple Sheera which was just too good followed by Kappi(Filter Coffee). It is impossible to get this quality of food in any five star hotels. This restaurant was started in 1940 and now it is managed successfully by third generation. They also opened retain store in 2016 which sells sixty kinds of snacks like Banana Chips, Pickles, different Masalas and Coffee Powder. The rates were very reasonable. The service was very fast and courteous. After dinner it was nice to meet the kind hearted owners Devraj and Siddharth. This place is worth visiting from any corner of Mumbai.

I was first in the queue to get in and treated myself to their famous filter kaapi, upma podi and butter idli podi and it was really out of the world. Totally loved it! A trip to Bombay can’t terminate without visiting this South Indian Bombay heaven.

Food is not worth the waiting time. The waiting time is generally 30-40 mins. Ambience is okay with slightly congested seating. We tried coffee, Idli, vada and dosa. Dosa was good, but it seemed Idli and Vada were undercooked. Coffee was amazing. They have a token system to provide table which works well considering the crowd. They also have good quality tasty dry snacks outside the restaurant.
