Tony had a francesinha (a sandwich made of sliced bread, steak, sausage, linguiça, cooked in a sauce of beer, port wine, spice, tomato, and a lot of cheese melted on top).

This restaurant has amazing F1 vibes with tributes to the brilliant late Ayrton Senna. The late Anthony Bourdain also famously visited this place, so adding to the validation. The best dish is definitely the franceshina. Cutting into it may take some effort, but every mouthful is deliciously cheesy and chockful of meat. The Afonso Hamburger is also another great option for hearty burger lovers. Fries are well cooked and not oily. Children and adults would love the fresh potato taste of each fry. Service is fast and efficient despite the crowd. Hats off to the waiters who rush around and are attentive.

My wife and I were in Porto while on our honeymoon and I really wanted to try a Francesinha. We found O Afonso on google search and hadn’t realized how famous it was until we go there. We had to wait a bit before being seated, but this was because of a few large groups finishing up. Once seated, service was great and the Francesinha was amazing. Highly recommend if you’re in Porto!

Excellent service and location. We've had Francesinhas, which where somehow unknown and unecpected to us. Food was good and definetely worth the price. Same is valid for the drinks. (We even had port whine on the house. ;) Clear recommendation from my side. Thanks for the fantastique evening!

What an amazing place. Some of the best service I've ever had in a restaurant. Very attentive but in a casual and not overbearing way. They've even treated me to a small glass of port wine for dessert. Francesihnas were delicious including fries which were crispy and salted just enough. Great atmosphere with lots of interesting photos and memorabilia. I could see the owner cooking my francesihna in the kitchen. Thank you to the team - I've had a great time here.

Is a review even necessary at this point? I think it goes without saying that this a must visit restaurant in Porto, even without the Anthony Bourdain stamp of approval (although this is why we came). The tribute wall to Anthony Bourdain was very touching and made it feel like a special place to be, and we got lucky getting in quite quickly before a big lineup arrived! We of course had the Francesinha, which came with a mountain of crispy thin cut fries which were excellent at soaking up the delicious gravy (they brought more halfway through). Absolutely worth the hype and if you are going to have a Francesinha, have one here.

The food was incredible and the service was just as good. We were kindly brought additional gravy for our francesinhas without having to ask for it. Our waiter even brought us a glass of port wine on the house to finish the meal. Can't say enough good things. If you're looking for the one place to try a Francesinha in Porto, this is it!

You may need to wait to get in here but it is worth it. The francesinha is amazing. The owner is serving you and he and his staff work hard and efficiently. You get a cup of peanuts an an appetizer to your meals. The gravy is spicy and plenty of it.

The kind of restaurant that is worth the hike. Amazing energy in there with lots of locals and an awesome shrine to Senna, which I got to sit next to. The Francesinha hit the spot, and was brought out promptly with adequate attention towards me the entire time. It was my first one, but it set the bar high. As I was finishing my meal, the staff were kind enough to pour me a cup of port on the house, a kind welcoming to their city and culture. Will easily be one of those places I recommend to anyone visiting Porto. Wishing the owners the best, but it is clear they already have it figured out.
