The 18 Essential Bologna Restaurants

"This craft coffee roaster has been sourcing single-origin coffee beans and whole-leaf teas in Bologna since 2002. The brand’s coffee is served around the city, but the original bar is a delight, with its sophisticated vintage decor and dainty details down to the ceramics." - Coral Sisk

Google
We planned a very short half-day trip to Bologna, and for breakfast we went to a cute little café called Caffè Terzi. It opens quite early, at 08.00, making it a perfect spot to start the day. The atmosphere felt very authentic. We saw locals stopping by for a quick espresso before heading to work, so we really got to experience the “real” Italian café culture. We tried a Cappuccino, which was excellent, and fresh Orange Juice (since one of our stomachs wasn’t feeling too well at the time). Both were great, with clearly high-quality coffee and juice. From the bakery selection, we had a Croissant with Pistachio and a Crostata alla Nocciola. Both were delicious and carefully made with quality ingredients. Overall, a truly authentic and delightful experience. Definitely recommended if you’re in Bologna!

Google
A nice cafe bar in Bologna - the authentic experience. I read comments on not having “a proper place to sit” well this is the Italian way, you order it, drink it, go. If you want to relax for as much time as you want, go to Sbux :D I would recommend this place for an authentic cafe experience

Google
The biscuit flavour was good, texture was a bit hard Very long wait The cremino tastes so damn weird, it's like cough syrup, not your normal white chocolate taste The cappuccino was fine This place is very popular and not even that good, the wait is too long, avoid

Google
This is the kind of place that takes both coffee and pastries seriously—and delivers beautifully on both. The espresso was smooth and rich, brewed with real care, and the atmosphere felt classic without being stuffy. We tried a cream-filled sfogliatella and a chocolate-studded pastry—both were buttery, crisp, and absolutely satisfying. Every bite had that perfect balance of flake and flavor. It’s the kind of café where you want to linger a bit longer, even if you only meant to stop in for a quick espresso. A solid choice for a refined but relaxed break in Bologna.

Google
Really simple cafe in an alley in Bologna with nice variety of drinks and coffee. The staff was nice and the decoration was something like old style. I like supporting small businesses with more traditional style. Unfortunately, i cannot stand dirt and unhygienic conditions. The toilet was really dirty but the worst part were the water glasses that i am not sure they were cleaned from the opening of the store as well as the pot of the tea that had black dirt on the nozzle and around the top. Probably it was from the frequent use but they ought to clean it once a while.

I had been really curious to visit Caffè Terzi, since it’s known as one of the most historic coffee spots in Bologna. I went around noon, planning to try their cappuccino. I had always heard that in Italy ordering cappuccino after 12 isn’t exactly encouraged, and I didn’t want to upset any locals—but I just couldn’t resist! Luckily, they must be used to tourists by now, because I got no strange looks and was able to enjoy my cappuccino without any issue 😁. After ordering, you take a seat at the outdoor tables and wait for your drink to be served through a little window, which I found very cute. The coffee itself was excellent—rich and flavorful. When I finished, I couldn’t bring myself to just leave the cup outside, so I brought it back inside. They thanked me warmly, and I like to think that little gesture won me some points with the locals 😁.

The quick-moving queue of locals was a good sign, but when I reached the counter, the service became very awkward. Four employees turned their backs and completely ignored me, leaving me (an obvious tourist) waiting in silence for a few minutes before anyone spoke. The cashier noticed and tried to make a joke but it was too late and just felt cringe. Despite the poor service, the coffee was decent. I tried the affogato con crema. If you sit outside, though, be careful; the tables are notoriously wobbly.

Google
Had heard a lot about this cafe and this was on my to visit list. Was surprised to see a small doorway in the middle of the street with a long queue. But it was absolute worth wait for 10 minutes. Tried this different cake with some unique filling which I don’t quite remember but it was a pure delight to the tastebuds. Very cozy and vibrant ambiance and fast service. Both sitting and standing options available. Their coffee is the game changer. It was very different and they do take special efforts to work on the taste. Worth visiting here even on a one day trip to Bologna.

Yelp
So so good! I wish I could stay in Bologna more so I could come back here! We came in and the staff helped us out, what to order and how the process worked. As tourists, we weren't sure. We got a cappuccino and some chocolate cappuccino thing, wow both were amazing! Plenty of seating inside, perfect to enjoy these special treats.

Yelp
I loved this little cafe in Bologna! It's on a pretty busy street with plenty of shopping and other restaurants. They have some delicious espresso and other coffee specialties. The first time I came here I got the caffe di creme - a pillowy cloud of whipped coffee. It was heavenly! My sister got an espresso and she remarked that it was one of the best she's had after six months of living in Bologna. The second time I came here I got the affogato. It was pretty good but I was disappointed to see that they didn't actually have fresh gelato - just ice cream out of a tub. It was good but you could taste the difference. Overall, it's a cute spot with a little bit of seating in the back and a classic Italian bar to sip your espresso while standing. It could get busy during peak hours but it's worth it for a quick pick-me-up.

Yelp
We came here via a food tour, and simply the perfect pistachio cappuccino. Very busy, located in the plethora of shops and culinary delights. Small old-school bathroom in the back added to its charm..

Yelp
Went on a friend's recommendation. Was the REAL thing. I'm the coffee freak. Coffee was excellent. Had the cappuccino. With the chocolate shavings. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
This is a quaint little place with counter and high table standing in the front and tables in back (look closely and you will see a back section). They have some desserts and the coffee basics. I have been here a few times and the coffee quality was consistent. I always order in my limited Italian but they will help you in English if you get stuck. Worth a try.

Yelp
The cappuccino was perfect. The croissant flaky and the filling just right, light and fluffy.

Yelp

Yelp
Great experience!Several kinds of coffee. But the cafe with no seats. It is a good choice after meal.

Yelp
True Italian coffee bar. They have regular seating in back and saloon standing bar in front. Very friendly and fast. Coffee is strong

Yelp
Found this gem on Yelp and followed @Jessica Y's advice and got a "Cafe Pistakkio" and a double espresso. WOW is all I can say. A truly authentic experience with a bustling front room - everyone jocky-ing for position at the bar and hollering their orders when it was "their turn." The baristas were cool and calm, the espresso was FANTASTIC and the vibe was electric. I wish I had more days in Bologna so we could return. But for now, I'll just dream of that Pistakkio!

Yelp
The BEST coffee shop that we visited on our recent vacation - - and trust me, my brother and I went to A LOT of coffee shops!! We are both pretty much self-professed coffee nerds; my brother really takes it to heart. He loves different coffee beans and blends - - mainly drinking coffee. And me, well my style is espresso. (I love coffee off all types - -but in the states I try to have drinks that emulate an Italian drink experience.) I'm the one who has the Nespresso at home and drinks a ridiculous amount of espresso. ANYWAYS... that being said. My brother and I love caffeineted beverages. This was the only coffee shop that we found that had multiple roasts. All the other coffee shops only used one time of bean. So a +1 for that..... Next, the shop was absolutely GORGEOUS inside! They served their drinks on the cutest little drinkware too. A +1 for that.... Likewise, the staff was super, super friendly! +1... Also, unlike any other coffee stop they had a wide selection of sweeteners that you could put in your drink. Anything from agave sugar to syrups... to other sugars. No other coffee shop had this. +1..... Adorable place - - so glad we found this! :) Oh, oh ... and only 1.10EUR for a caffe!

Yelp
In my opinion one of the best coffee shops in Bologna, and there are tons. This place takes the time to creat the perfect cup for you. There are 4-5 bar tables inside for a quick stop as well as comfy couches in the back for your more intimate moments. They serve pastries as well if you're interested but the coffee is where it's at. If you don't ask, they'll make your coffee with the house blend of beans (which is still really good), but you can get different beans from all over the world as well (there are a bunch of hoppers that house a variety of beans). I got the cappuccino first, came back and then ordered a macchiato. First of all, service here is fantastic. They give you a tiny glass of water with the coffee as well (which is kind of uncommon). After that both coffees were delightful. They even shaved dark chocolate on top of it as a garnish. You can sweeten your coffee if you'd like. I normally wouldn't make a point of this, but they have about 7 different ways to do it. Everything from agave syrup, cane syrup to 3 different types of dry sugar. The macchiato was probably my favourite, I'd definitely come back as many times as I could.

Yelp
Amazing coffees and pastries plus super friendly people in the really nice historical part of bologna - just the walk to get there is worth a visit already

Yelp
I think I fall in love for this place. everything here is so impeccable! Presentation is nice, but it is a long bar where the marble counter takes more space than the seating area. There a line most of the time, but it ends quickly, don't be scare if you see lot of people. The majority of them drink their coffee fast and go. At the bar here a nice choice of pastries or chocolate. Different sort of beans are displayed, with different prices of course. I cam here each day during my stay in bologna in order to try the most of their brews :) Highly recommended if you love coffee, latte, cappuccino, rare beans!

Yelp
This cafe is the epitome of "as good as it gets". My cooking instructor gave me a bunch of recommended spots around the city, and I will be forever indebted to her for leading me here. I ordered the Cafe Pistakkio - came with some sort of pistachio cream on the bottom, coffee, and a layer of whipped cream on top with crushed pistachio bits, and it was so dang good. In fact, I immediately started to daydream about moving to Bologna and coming into Cafe Terzi for my daily cup of Cafe Pistakkio (but of course, I'd also try everything else they had to offer). Yes, I literally thought about upending my life for a cup of coffee. It was magical.

Yelp
If you like coffee and great service then this is the spot! We read the reviews and then had it suggested by a friend locally, so we had to try it. All I can say is that I'm glad we didn't pass this one up. The staff was very inviting, helpful, and most of all happy to have us. But when we got our capuchinos, we fell in love! Overall, we would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting a great experience and awesome coffee.

Yelp
Best coffee we had in Bologna! It was a very cute place with great Italian feel! Service was outstanding, the young man working enjoyed speaking English. Coffee was also very cheap, and still so good! Will come back if ever back in Bologna! Hey, will be back in September!!

Yelp
This place is very worth a visit. Traditional and excellent espresso and espresso-based drinks, very busy (all day pretty much), and filled with locals and tourists alike who love the coffee and the high quality pastries.
google avatar

P J.

Yelp
The espresso was pretty good here. A bit expensive, but you get to choose from about 5 different types of espresso. The service is good and it was always busy while we were there. A good place to get some coffee if you are downtown! In the back there is a seating area, but you need to pay a few Euro to sit there. If you do, you also get some cookies and wifi if you need it.

Yelp
Fantastic espresso. A wide variety of espresso coffees, each in their own grinder. Experienced and professional baristas. A must for coffee lovers.

Yelp
This was memorable, the place was very beautiful and designed well. The coffee was pretty good, and the brioch was very good here as well. Mostly locals in the place, but I saw a couple other foreigners.

Yelp
Best espresso in Bologna. Wonderful pastries. Quick and friendly service. This cafe has soy milk and stevia! Absolutely love coming here many days of the week for a to go drink or a little relaxation of the bustle had died down a bit. This cafe is extremely popular so it is usually busy! Make sure to try the biscotti and the raspberry croissants!

Yelp
This place is absolutely incredible. I recently visited Bologna and went to this coffee shop twice. I would have gone more if I would have had the time. The quality of the coffee is top notch. I ordered the cappucino with shaved dark chocolate, an apricot filled cornetto and a variety of the chocolates. I recommend everything! I wish I was there now! Totally recommend this spot! Loved it.
google avatar

Yelp
The best coffee I've ever had! There are so many ways to customize your beverage (and not with crappy syrups but with fine ingredients). The baristas are very friendly and willing to make recommendations. Small narrow bar creates a cozy environment. Not only is the coffee amazing, but the presentation is also spectacular. I can't wait until the next time I'm in Bologna!

Yelp
Went to Italy Last March 2014. This was by far the best coffee we had in Bologna and possibly best from your trip to italy. We bought two bags as souvenirs for parents. After having the coffee again back in the U.S. we took kept one of the two bags for ourselves and gave chocolates instead. It was that good.
google avatar

Yelp
Cutest coffeeshop with great choice of coffee beans from all over the world. Don't miss!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is for people who are finicky about their coffee, and you pay for it - financially speaking. The cost is more than worth the immaculate and friendly service and the outrageously intricate prep that goes into every coffee. Also they have like 6 different kinds of sugar. Worth a visit!

Hotspin A.

Yelp
Probably the best cappuccino I've ever had. Extremely extensive coffee & tea menu, and the service was fantastic. I knocked it one star for being a tad expensive (~5 euros for a cappuccino + charge for sitting) and for having a bit of an odd seating arrangement. Still, if you are looking for high-quality caffeine, this is the place. Also provides free wifi.
