New Caffe Vita Owner Deming Maclise Aims to Improve Iconic Shop’s Culture - Eater Seattle

"One of Seattle’s most iconic independent coffee chains is getting a fresh start in 2020. On January 1, local restaurant mogul Deming Maclise — who has opened prominent places such as Poquitos, Stoneburner, and Rhein Haus — took over ownership at Caffe Vita, which has been at the forefront of the city’s coffee culture for more than 25 years (Seattle Met first reported the news)." - Gabe Guarente

14 Coffee Shops That Also Serve Alcohol - Seattle - The Infatuation

"We wish that every date started with a cappuccino and ended with Gamay and a cheese board. This bright coffee shop in Fremont doubles as a wine bar, which makes any bean-to-grape transition pretty seamless. There’s a great selection of wines by the glass here, but if you like the looks of a bottle on the front wall display, you can buy it for the shelf price plus a $10 corkage fee. That’s way cheaper than ordering one at a restaurant, so you should just go ahead and splurge on that chicory salad, too." - Aimee Rizzo

Google
This is a nice coffee place—cozy atmosphere, good drinks, and a great spot to relax or catch up with a friend. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Google
The staff is super friendly and helpful—service with a genuine smile every time. Their drink menu is incredibly creative (you have to try something new!). Highly recommend!

Google
Just drank one of their nitro cold brews, it might be the worst coffee I've ever tasted. It has the worst sour taste that hits your tongue. Does anyone over there taste this stuff before it goes out?

Annabelle Veatch

Google
I love this place! Cortado and the hemp milk cortado were really tasty! 😋Also, the designs in the foam were really detailed!!! Perfect spot to sit and enjoy the coffee too! Also, I don’t know if this location is in a weird location but we were the only people in the building. 🤔 When looking for a coffee place, caffe vita was a first choice due to roasting their own coffee beans 🫘 ☕️

Google
I tried Caffee Vita again for the 3rd time and am still disappointed. Lighthouse roasters is under construction for 4 days, the bagel place with espresso is closed on Mondays, Market Time doesn't make espresso drinks anymore after the renovation, so my last chance in this area before heading back home for a work meeting was Vita. Their beans always taste so burnt to me, but I wanted to try it again since they were my only option in the time frame I had. It was a mistake, the beans still taste awful. Not just burnt but like an ashtray.... Which is honestly impressive to get them that bad. The service has always been nice, the staff friendly, and quick, the actual shop is cozy and they have wifi and breakfast sandwiches and pastries but I just don't understand why their beans are so bad. This is probably why Lighthouse always has a line out the door, rain or shine and Vita never does.

Google
Staff is really friendly and nice. The donuts are tasty, and I think the drinks are pretty good - IDK I'm not a coffee enthusiast.

Google
Cute and quiet spot for great coffee! Our latte and cappuccino were great. Also, carry macrina bakery pastries. We had the cornetto and pumpkin loaf which were both good.

Yuji Chan

Google
So we love the coffee here but the price is too high for what it is. The baristas were friendly and warm and we sat at the cafe for awhile with the outdoor seating option.

Yelp
I'm surprised this place has poor reviews. I discovered it since I started going to the yoga tree recently and it turned into a ritual for me to go here after yoga. I love their cappuccino and cortado. I ordered a 8 ounce latte recently which turned out to be more like a 12 ounce and too milky for me, so I asked the main barista and she gladly switched it out for a 6 ounce latte which was perfect! I really appreciated her service and how nice and smiley she was. I will find out her name and update it here:) prices are almost $6 for a cappuccino with tax, which seems to be normal price in Seattle these days unfortunately. Oh I also love all the free and paid events that are advertised on the bulletin board, I discovered an event that I'd love to attend soon:)

Yelp
First time visiting the Fremont location early Sunday morning. The barista working was an amazing, joyful, cheerful being. They were patient, helpful with recommendations and all-around cool. At 8am on a Sunday? Yes, this is what customer service means/is and it isn't dead, it's alive and well at Vita on Fremont ave. I wish I had gotten their name, but you know who you are. I had a very fruity, crisp brewed coffee which was maybe from Nicaragua. Scone was good, the restaurant is spotless and inviting. Coffee date? Come here.

Yelp
What's not to like? Small, local espresso shop with enthusiasts committed to doing it right. Love the chill vibe, and the Fremont locals doing their thing.

Yelp
I've been to Caffe Vita Fremont countless times pre Yelp. I'm surprised that I've never posted a review. However, after picking up a book order at nearby Book Larder, I decided to spend some time onsite at this popular indie OG coffee roasting & cafe chain (8/4/24). Great crafted beverages, pastries, light bites, coffee beans, and other merch. Ample seating inside via table or counter and also outdoor sidewalk seating, very popular on sunny days! Lots of natural light and healthy plants while onsite. Upbeat, very friendly barista during this visit and similar experiences recalling several previous visits. Thankfully no bad stereotype of hipster, standoffish types. I've enjoyed that this is also a cafe where one can sit awhile, which I did. I was able to catch up on some Yelp stuff and emails while I enjoyed my iced mocha and Olivia's Chocolate Chip Cookie (from Macrina) - perfect on National Choc Chip Day! I also got to see lots of neighborhood doggos out on walks with their pet parents. Pleasant exchanges overhead with others stopping in with the barista mentioned. Enjoyable detour and recommended when visiting the upper portion of Fremont Ave N's stretch of retail and food businesses.

Yelp
Everything I want in a neighborhood cafe. The latte is delicious and people are friendly especially Amy who is always warm and welcoming. The coziness of the shop helps me relax and unwind. Starting this month they are hosting the Silent Book Club once a month. Next one will be 7/25 and I will definitely be there again.

Yelp
Since I live nearby, it's a place that's convenient to go to in the mornings when I don't feel like making my own caffeine fix. The staff here is super friendly. The coffee quality is consistent with other Caffe Vita's - I'm personally fine with the roasts and beans, but I come mainly for the friendly staff and ample seating in the morning. I like that Vita has rotating seasonal drinks too!
google avatar

Katarina S.

Yelp
Your average neighborhood coffee shop. The coffee is decently acidic which I don't like. I do appreciate their creative concoctions, however miso caramel latte was not my cup of tea. The miso was overpowering but I can see how some might like it.
google avatar

Sammy P.

Yelp
Great mocha, friendly service, cute interior. We really liked this spot. They even do individual coffee art on top, not just the same design for every order- which I don't require but was a nice touch. Will visit again!
google avatar

Tom E.

Yelp
Fast Wi-Fi, light, airy interior with huge south-facing windows. Nicely finished woodwork throughout. Tried their new Goldenmilk latte = oat milk, maple syrup, turmeric, cinnamon. Ginger, mushroom extract, Himalayan salt (un-caffeinated) which might be my new favorite.
google avatar

Sammy T.

Yelp
A cute corner cafe in a good strip of Fremont! The beverages are expensive but it's a nice treat once in a while. We came in the morning and there were some people sitting (but we just got to go). I tried a seasonal beverage (the earl grey fog - it had earl grey tea, lavender bitter bits, coconut cream, and oat milk). This was DELISH!! It was a little sweet so actually I diluted it with extra water (because I didn't have milk) when I got home where I finished the drink. The tea bag actually had a few more rounds of tea before it lost flavor so arguably good bang for buck! The buck being $6.50 for a 12oz (which is technically still $$) My partner got a regular latte and the latte art on this was quite nice! Overall, we'd definitely swing by again if we're feeling another treat but there are also so many other good coffee shops near-ish that I also want to try other shops!
google avatar

Sanjna S.

Yelp
My friends and I went here to catch up and there ass decent seating and it was really clean too! The staff is super friendly and all of our drinks tasted amazing! Would come again!

Yelp
When in Seattle.... Fremont is always one of my faves!! A couple years ago I was in Seattle for my favorite band, The 1975, but i was waiting for the meet & greet. Caffe Vita was across the street from the little place I was at. I can't remember what I got but i loved it. We got there very early so i had for a hot drink first & later in the day got an iced latte which was also wonderful! Planning a trip soon, can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
I go to cafe vita every weekend and each time I love it. The service is great and same with the food. And when it's a hot day they have air conditioning. Highly recommend this place to others. Otis, age 7

Yelp
3.5 stars. Cute little cafe near our airbnb! We got two lattes and one cinnamon bun. Both were good but i am comparing this to lighthouse nearby a couple blocks down and i think lighthouse coffee tasted stronger and better.
google avatar

Josephine C.

Yelp
There were only a few folks there (it was a nice sunny day on July 5, so maybe people were out celebrating the end of pandemic restrictions) so the service was pretty fast. Several tables were free so we plopped down to wait for my drink to cool down. Drinks: we got a cold brew and a pacnor. The cold brew was above average but nothing spectacular. I say this only because we were using Eater's June 16 list of Seattle shops for cold brew, and Caffe Vita was on it. Don't be like us and plan a trip around this drink. But if you happen to be in the area (like checking out the awesome Book Larder across the street), the cold brew ain't bad. I ordered the pacnor as I had no idea what it was. It's definitely like a cortado (so less milky than a latte) but with some half-and-half instead. The barista gave me a heads up that it's only a 6oz, which I liked as anything bigger might've felt too heavy. It was good, with a strong espresso flavor note and enough dairy to remove the bitterness without sticking to the tongue. They had some a few outdoor seating options, and wifi! I can see this place being popular with those that might bring in their laptop and hog a table for hours, but right now that doesn't appear to be happening yet.
google avatar

Emelina W.

Yelp
Small and old, but I love vita coffee beans. They could help you grinding them. Better than ordering online, because sometimes the online ones could clog my espresso machine.
google avatar

Liz L.

Yelp
I came to Fremont area to see my brother and spotted this cute shop. I pulled up and as much as I wanted to try their mocha, the place smelled delicious, I opted for a black iced tea. It was fresh and delicious. The 2 guys working were super nice. I'll definitely be back in to try your mocha. Didn't have time to snap a picture but it's a really cute place. Give them a visit.
google avatar

Eujue L.

Yelp
Stopped by for an afternoon coffee while waiting for Fremont poke. The baristas were all super friendly. My coffee came out in ~2 minutes and was such a nice pick me up! The espresso is very strong but does not have any acidic notes (I do not like my coffee acidic). The oat milk is also very light and smooth! Will be coming back if I'm in the area again :)
google avatar

Nicole H.

Yelp
I really enjoy Caffe Vita. They have a great walk up window, which is very helpful in Covid times, and they have great online ordering as well! Their coffee is tasty. The reason for deducting one star is that sometimes when we've ordered, their drip coffee has been cold or only mildly warm. It really should be hot. And another dedication for their pastries not being very good or fresh. Overall I'd recommend the coffee or Americano but skip the pastry!
google avatar

Marc C.

Yelp
Came here for their tea after having Paseos right across the street. My friend and I were pretty full so we needed something to help us digest. Of course I had to order a green tea. Fusion mint green tea - very refreshing. Body felt refreshed and cool. Tangerine tea - wasn't too overpowering. Sweetness from the tangerine was just right. Kinda disappointed how they didn't have cup sleeves. We had to ask for two cups to layer the cup of tea with because it was HOT. Didn't try their coffee, but will definitely come back to try it next time I come visit, but all I can tell you is the tea here is not bad at all.

D M.

Yelp
My absolutely favorite place in the area to get a cortado. All the regular baristas here are fantastic and really talented. I've never been disappointed by their drinks as the quality is very consistent. Also, the music selection is always on point. I just love coming here!!
google avatar

Kyle D.

Yelp
Overall: A solid cafe to work from in a surprisingly sparse part of Fremont (cafe wise). The good: The kind of cafe that welcomes workers and allows you to stay for hours on end, which is amplified by their free WiFi and plenty of outlets while still having a local charm. The coffee is good and the baked goods are fresh and delicious (even though they don't seem to be made in-house, but I could be wrong). The staff is friendly and the place is clean and artsy. We came multiple days in a row and got a ton of work done! The not-so-good: The music was too loud on both days that we worked there. It wasn't bad music, but it certainly didn't help when we had to be on work-related calls. Food/drink: 8.5/10 Atmosphere: 8.5/10 Service: 8.5/10
google avatar

Andrew T.

Yelp
Awesome coffee spot right across the street from Fremont Bowl and a few other spots to eat. There's free wifi, drinking water on tap, and plenty of outlets so also a great place to sit down and get some work done.
google avatar

Carlos B.

Yelp
Sleepy Friday night (12/27/19) I am waiting for my friends to arrive at Uneeda Burger, while I thaw out because of my geocaching adventure I had in the cold AF Fremont area. At any rate, the kind and compassionate barista answered my questions about this boutique cafe menu options. I settled on their signature drink: Pacnor. Small in size but big on flavor and taste!
google avatar

Sabrina A.

Yelp
I can't say enough about the coffee here. Always delicious and perfect! I love the seasonal blends the best. The winter ones hit it out of the park!
google avatar

Julian S.

Yelp
Smooth Americano -- and a mega chill vibe. Loved the welcoming and relaxed vibe the baristas have here. Casual spread of shortbread and filled cookie samples certainly helped ease me into the coffee mood. Coffee was served piping hot in two cups so my hands wouldn't burn--greatly appreciated! It's the little things dude!
google avatar

Brandon U.

Yelp
tldr: Solid neighborhood coffee shop. Standard drink menu and fresh baked goods. Personable baristas. Caffe Vita is a convenient coffee shop for those in North Fremont. The drinks are standard. Fresh baked goods in the showcase every morning. Sitting area is limited, but lots of light. No loud music makes this a nice spot to hunker down for work.

A U.

Yelp
Don't get turned off by the rating for Vita, those reviews are super old. This place consistently makes great coffee and has great service! I get a drip/light roast usually but their mochas are the best - not too sweet! And if you're lucky they'll practice their latte art skills on your drink (see photo)
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
Great just the way it is hip hop playing right now however a few couples and solos hanging out here on their computers other than that not much chatting happening in here. So you can get work done and the Clinking from the baristas is like added sounds to the beats. The gals were friendly however they should be given more smiles too this is what I think would brighten the expressions on all the customers faces. Come in with Curiosity, a smile and leave Open and lifted.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops to work from! It's not a very "central" location, but it's in a nice part of Fremont and surrounded by quite a few nice lunch/dinner spots. It's a small(ish) space, but I usually have luck finding a table or a window seat in the bar-like seating area. The other great thing is that you can frequently see cute dogs in the coffee line. I haven't interacted with the baristas much, but they all seem to be pretty nice... and they make delicious drinks! They also carry DRY Soda (love!) and kombucha, so I don't always end up getting coffee drinks here. They have some good pastries, but my favorite item is the eggplant piadina. I fell in love with it when I worked near the Queen Anne Caffe Vita, and I love getting it here whenever I'm hungry.
google avatar

Candace H.

Yelp
Came in for a quick to-go coffee - got my usual Oatmilk Latte and I LOVED it! Their coffee is really well balanced and their oatmilk is one of the smoothest I've had. Would definitely come back for my latte fix! From my quick pit-stop, I can tell that this would be a great place to catch up with friends or get work done as there isn't too much noise and they have lovely big windows that let in a good amount of natural light!
google avatar

Jiliane R.

Yelp
Love the outdoor seating and the light coming through in this particular location. This cafe is on a quaint street in Fremont and provides a nice space to people watch. It is small and cozy inside and has a lot of windows. Always a fan of Cafe Vita, they are a pretty solid Seattle coffee staple. The staff here are very nice. The pastries are underwhelming and a little stale looking but their drip is one of my favorites. Smooth and won't let you down!

Wanlee Y.

Yelp
Caffe Vita was such an cute little place. Their coffee was so good. The man that helped us was very helpful and sweet. Would stop by again!
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
This was a pretty average coffee shop. Its aesthetic is pretty legit as a café. What makes the corner cafe stand out is how its walls are taken up by its windows. I visited around 3-4PM and the place was welly-lit by natural lighting. They also have an assortment of French presses sold at the front as well as other caffeine-oriented gadgets. My order of caffeine was just okay. I had a latte and it wasn't anything special.
google avatar

Danielle A.

Yelp
We saw this place from where we were having brunch and thought it would be fun to check it out as we drink our way through the coffees of Seattle. It had bad reviews, but we shrugged it off and went. The coffee is tasty but the staff is unnecessarily rude and the drink is over priced. The girl at the counter quipped that she could pour their only hot teas over some ice so we could have "a lukewarm drink instead of hot" when my friend ordered an iced version of a tea. (The menu doesn't mention if they can make the teas and coffees both hot and cold, or if they are all one or the other.) my friend then said she'd have a iced (the girl at the counter told us we could do coffees that way) macchiato instead - which is listed on the menu. The girl said "a latte with milk and caramel then?" Yeah. Macchiatos. Was she shaming us for our choice? I ordered the same thing so we could get out of there ASAP. With all the coffee places to choose from in the city, you think they'd treat people with kindness so visitors would choose them over other places. It was also more expensive to get a 12 oz of this coffee over many other larger sizes of coffee around town. Pretty disappointed.
google avatar

Aaron E.

Yelp
The same barista was welcoming and nice today. 5 stars! She's so cool ice cubes would be jealous!
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
I mostly go for matcha at cafes. Good matcha here. Well mixed and isn't burnt. Nice place. Good pastries.
google avatar

Yelp
Caffe Vita may not bring La Dolce Vita (the sweet life), but it is a small shop for Caffè Vita (the coffee life) ... and, in Seattle, just about everyone is livin la vita del caffè . If you are south of the Woodland Park Zoo and can find parking (or lucky enough to live/work close by then Caffe Vita has decent java to satisfy just about any caffinator. My wife and I weren't blown away, but weren't disappointed either with sippin' a couple lattes and sharin' a fruit tart from the small display case by the register. With lots of windows and a dog friendly layout, there were several folks hanging out (aka working from home) with their dog in tow. It looked like the kind of peaceful afternoon I wish I could enjoy more often. For those livin' Caffe Vita near Woodland Park, you're gonna need coffee and you're gonna need it often ... so be thankful for the convenience of Caffe Vita cause average coffee is better than no coffee, right?
google avatar

Lolia S.

Yelp
Laptop camper here. After picking up my sandwich at Paseo, I was happy to spot Caffe Vita up the street. It's a smaller location with similar Vita décor (industrial vibe, local art/photographs, old coffee machines). The selection of pastries is limited (donuts, scones, muffins, croissants, cookies). Since there's free wi-fi and it's Seattle, laptop campers are present and it could be difficult to find a place to sit. The large windows have shades to protect you from the rare sunny day in Seattle. *Latte: art not as nice as Capitol Hill, but wonderful flavor, best coffee in Seattle The beans are roasted at their Capitol Hill location. You know you love me. X0 X0, laptop camper.
google avatar

Eva C.

Yelp
Came here after grabbing goodies from Rachel Coyle's Pop-Up. The moment you walk in it smells of heavenly roasted coffee. The counter displays a bunch of baked goods. I ordered a hot chai latte. It was very flavorful and full of spice. It was a nice pairing with my baked goodies! There is not a ton of seating inside, but they do have tables outside as well for nice sunny days. They allow dogs inside, which is always a plus in my eyes! :) It's all street parking which isn't too difficult to find at all. The staff seemed pretty friendly, but I didn't have a ton of interaction with them except for when ordering. Good place to sit and read or study in peace. It's very quiet and relaxing.
google avatar

Gorman E.

Yelp
Even though this Caffe Vita is on the small side, it still great to get expresso or some iced chai tea here after a delicious Cuban Roast from Paseo. On this day, I got an Iced Chai Tea and it hit the spot. I like the fact it has simple syrup or honey to add to your coffee or drink. The customer service is always friendly plus nice stools in the front to get your sip of your favorite beverage from this place.
google avatar

Jen H.

Yelp
3 solid stars Eh..it was just alright; NOTHING TOO SPECIAL; We dropped by after grabbing sandwiches a block down.
google avatar

Adit C.

Yelp
Thankyou for making this bus driver's day!!! The vanilla drink was truly one of the best drinks I've had in a long time.
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
We came out to Fremont to try out "Fremont Bowl", but we arrived little earlier than expected, so we decided to grab coffees before having a dinner. Caffe Vita was conviniently located across the street, so we decided to give it a try. We ordered cappuccino and 12oz cold brew. Their cappuccino was enjoyable, and barista was friendly. On the other hand, cold brew was just meh. I would probably come back for a coffee, if I lived around this neighborhood.
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
I don't know how I feel about the Kyoto cold brew yet. It tastes... unique and really brings out some interesting flavors but I don't know that I like them so much. But I did like trying them and my baristas were super friendly so hey!
google avatar

Linda L.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood café with a friendly vibe and lots of space to sit down and get some work down. The wifi was fast and easy to connect to. They have a case of different pastries, and the brownies looked super good.
google avatar

Rona L.

Yelp
Ehh...this place is okay. My caffe latte tasted fine and so did my boyfriend's caffe mocha. The girl behind the counter was friendly and the service was quick. They even had small pizzas from next door (Via Tribunali) in their display case. I only gave them three stars because there was a fly buzzing around - trapped - in the case along with all their food. yuck.
google avatar

Christina S.

Yelp
From a visitor. I was not a fan of this place. My coffee did not look anything like the pretty pictures online and it wasn't very good. This place was right by our Airbnb, but we only went once. We walked the extra five blocks to Lighthouse the remaining mornings.
google avatar

Beth W.

Yelp
Caffe Vita is the best coffee in Seattle! I go out of my way to get these beans now and their coffee is amazing.
