The 38 Best Restaurants in Sydney, Australia | Eater

"Here, diners enjoy platters of grilled meats, pickles, bread, and fried cauliflower. Some people are drawn by the falafel, which is deep-fried and bright-green with mashed broad beans, but the eatery showcases other foods of Hesham El Masry’s heritage as well. The must-order Koshari — the rice, pasta, and spiced tomato specialty that’s Egypt’s national dish — is topped with a glorious pile of caramelized onions. Vibe check: Even without the crowds of gig-goers attending the nearby Enmore Theatre, competition for a table at Cairo Takeaway can be tough. But patience will be rewarded." - Lee Tran Lam

We had two of the mixed plates, probably could’ve shared one between us, as the servings were generous and we ended up leaving more than we’d like. Everything was fresh and flavourful, and it’s easy to see why this place is always busy. 🤌

I've been a longtime fan of Cairo Takeaway, and it's a place I make sure to visit every time I'm in Sydney, whether for work or leisure. The venue itself has a wonderful, quirky vibe that always makes for a great dining experience. On this visit, I had my usual—the vegetarian platter—and also shared some koshari. The flavors are consistently fantastic, and the dishes always feel authentic and satisfying. I was, as always, planning to grab two takeaway koshari to bring back with me to Melbourne. Unfortunately, the traffic was so bad on the way to the airport that I wasn't able to make a second stop. It's a testament to how good their food is that I'm willing to fly it home with me! I would highly recommend Cairo Takeaway to anyone looking for delicious Egyptian food. My only minor critique is that the vegetarian platter doesn't come with toum, and I'm not sure why that is. Despite this small detail, the food and the overall experience are always superb, and I can't wait to come back on my next trip.

Thought this place would be much better than what I expected it to be. Food is homely and good value for money but expected a much higher quality of food. Was not bad but I thought ingredients could have been fresher. Would visit once

I had the mixed plate, the falafel plate, and a hibiscus tea. Everything was super tasty — the falafel was crispy and fresh, and the mixed plate had so much good flavor. The hibiscus tea was really refreshing too. The vibe is chill, the service is friendly, and the prices totally make sense for how good the food is. Definitely a place I’d come back to!

Flavour bomb in the heart of Newtown! Cairo Takeaway is an absolute gem 💎 — we ordered the falafel pocket, mix grill plate with lamb kofta and shish tawook, eggplant, hummus, tahini, fattoush salad, pickles… and a cheeky side of harissa fries 🔥 It was packed with flavour, super fresh, and perfectly spiced. The falafel was crispy on the outside, fluffy inside, and the dips? Next level. Harissa fries had the perfect kick, and the Salam Cola was the cherry on top 🥤👌 The staff were welcoming and the vibe is relaxed, warm, and buzzing. Perfect for a casual feast or foodie pit stop in Newtown. Will definitely be back! 🥙🍢🌶️❤️

Ate here on a Sunday for lunch. We didn't plan on eating here as our plans had changed to last minute we stumbled across this humble venue. This was by far the most memorable Egyptian food experience to date. My wife and I shared the mixed plater which had a variety of proteins and sides to please ones tastebuds. I ordered extra garlic sauce as I loved it. The black coffee was not bitter and a matter of a fact suprisly smooth. The other dish we shared was a rice dish witj lamb. This was my favourite. We shovelled this down. I think I forgot to chew and breath. Easy comfort food. For desert we ate a traditional custard dish. A mixture of hot and cold. Well executed. 100% returning soon to order the exact same items + 3 x garlic sauce.

Just delicious. Got the mixed meat plate (chicken and lamb) and can’t stop thinking about it. If you’re not that hungry, I’d recommend getting the pocket instead. Vegetarian options also included.

Cute and cosy spot sharing Egyptian fare. Must try the falafel pockets, and the Turkish coffee is essential on a rainy day. I hope to see Cairo Takeaway expand with more seating to accomodate dine-in, but as the name suggests it’s catered for a quick bite and takeaway 😊

Yelp
This place comes highly recommended! Best place to go after footy training for healthy tasty Middle Eastern food. Don't listen to the negative reviews--this place is quality. Can't wait to eat there again, when I return

Yelp
I had a bad bad experience!! The guy who worked there was very rude when I asked him questions since I wasnt familiar with the food. i was waiting 35 mins to receive my food and I have to say, it was dry and tasted like nothing. even 1 star is too much for this restaurant, if you can even call it a restaurant.

Yelp
Cairo Takeaway is a small cornershop that serves Egyption food and sits unassumingly on the Enmore high street but the food (and smell) is so worth making a stop! It's very casual dining so you order your food at the register and grab your own table. There aren't a lot of seats on the inside but there's a small outdoor seating area which was perfect on a warm day! My friend and I ordered four plates of food to share which was way too much but so good that we finished absolutely everything. We got the mixed dips with bread, mixed meat plate, mixed vegetarian (falafel) plate, and paprika fries. The highlights for me were the mixed dips! It comes with mahsa'aha (capsicum and eggplant), hummus and toum (garlic sauce). These were so delicious and pair well with not only the crispy bread but pretty much everything else. I was also so glad the meat and vegetarian plates also came with these as I couldn't get enough of them! The falafel and various meats were also seasoned well and so yummy. This place was such a good discovery, I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I discovered this place by the smell. I decided I had to eat there as soon as possible and have never turned back! In about a month or so I've been there about 7 times with different friends. It's super casual dining and there aren't many seats. They are frying fresh falafel at the entrance and the plates (we share them) are perfection. I love this place so much. I can't overstate it. The food is so fresh and authentic! The coffee is great too. Noticed that they do breakfast - so I'll have to try it. I'm reluctant to post a positive review.... that's how much I like this place. I don't want it to be overrun.

Yelp
Highly recommend this spot; we were greeted straight away and despite the busy atmosphere got a seat near the window. The food is so good; especially the falafel (it's made right in front of you). The French fries are heavenly. Lovely staff, great value for money, will definitely be back.

Yelp
The food is fantastic. Best falafel hands down. Order the mixed veg and mixed meat plate. great value for money as well
