The Best Restaurants In Wilmington, Delaware - Wilmington - The Infatuation

"You’re right to be skeptical of a Cajun restaurant on the side of a highway very far from Louisiana, but Cajun Kate’s will prove itself to you. The gumbo has a perfectly browned roux as the base, and the crab cakes are handmade and generously filled. And while the po’boys are enough to serve several people, you’ll definitely want your own. Stick with seafood and savory options here—the muffaletta is dry and the beignets are under-fried. There are two locations, but we recommend the one in Bellefonte." - maddy sweitzer lamme

Was craving some seafood and saw this place had good reviews and for GOOD REASON! As soon as we walked in, all of the staff were super welcoming and nice. The food was amazing. We got the seafood gumbo, cajun popcorn shrimp, catfish fingers, and fried chicken alfredo. The batter on the fried food was perfectly seasoned and had a great crunch to it. The tartar sauce was amazing as well, so much flavor! The staff was so kind to let us try samples for the other items and we are definitely coming back to try their other items. A muuuuuuuuuuuuust try if you want seafood. You will not regret it!

Absolutely loved this place, being a Louisiana native my brother in law and I absolutely loved this restaurant above any of the 5 star restaurants and dine and dashes we’ve been to during our stay here in Wilmington! This was the closest thing i could get to a home cooked meal with out cooking it myself. T-Don and Kelly were amazing! Made our food to order, and we ordered a lot! We tried the red beans and rice, jambalaya, crawfish pie, friend green tomatoes, seafood salad, boudin balls, calas, gumbo, and the fried Cajun Mac and cheese. We also ordered poboys. I told T-Don, “ the best way I can describe the food is like buying store brand products and working with what you have when you can’t get name brand original ingredients and making it the best you can and as authentic as possible!” When we come back Cajun Kate’s will definitely be or first stop. Mais dat food is cest bon podna

Whole traveling, my husband and I phoned this establishment after finding it during an impromptu food search. After calling to inquire on seating and with highly motivated Ben we were on our way. From the moment we walked in, we were impressed! The customer service was absolutely outstanding—warm, attentive, and genuinely caring without being overbearing. They made us priority 1 and we felt welcomed and appreciated, which is rare these days. The cajun food was excellent — full of New Orleans flavor, and clearly crafted with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Each dish was perfectly seasoned and tasted like it was made with passion and love for the culinary craft. The owners take pride in every detail. Their commitment to excellence shows in the friendly service, consistent quality, and overall vision for the restaurant. And meeting owner/chef Don really sealed the deal! His genuine down to earth customer focus and service were impeccable! Cleanliness was also top-notch—which gave us even more confidence in the care and professionalism behind the scenes. This restaurant sets the standard for how dining should be done. A true 5-star experience all the way around—we can’t wait foe another opportunity to come back!

Google
Kelly was literally the best. It was my first time and she gave me bunch of samples to try on and gave clear breakdown of everything. Their seasonings are extremely tasty. Highly rec!

Google
I highly recommend Cajun Kate’s !! First time trying and I am in love ! Had the catfish fingers, red beans and rice, beignets, and the crispy Cajun Mac and cheese. The staff is amazing and very helpful!!

Google
First time coming here after wanting to try it for a while. Disappointed to see all their fried foods are cooked in peanut oil but it’s okay, tried some other items and it was just subpar. The baked catfish was good but the flavor wasn’t really there like hoped for anything else.

Google
Cajun Kate's has a New Orleans "Nola" flair, including mouthwatering cuisine, music, and paintings. Actually went to quickly grab collards "to go" and ended up dining in and adding an order of delightful chicken nuggets. Good ambiance here!! When dining inside, it's a nice opportunity to get a lot more acquainted with Don, Kate, Kelly, and Ben. They are very knowledgeable about food. Everyone is super excited to serve and are among the friendliest folks. Make sure to try the café au lait! Cajun Kate's Boothwyn, PA (Booth's Corner Farmer's Market) and Cajun Kate's Belvedere, DE (in Wilmington) locations are spot on! Parking is very convenient as well. GOD BLESS y’all! Looking forwarding to more visits real soon. Cajun Kate's gets 5 Spoons 🥄 🥄 🥄 🥄 🥄 .

Google
Absolutely delicious ! If you’re looking for the best catfish in Delaware, this is your spot ! The catfish was perfectly baked and the mild rice and red beans had great taste with a nice touch of sausage. The coffee is always brewing as well which is a plus. Definitely recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
I have been traveling here frequently since my local seafood joint closed. Don, the owner of this restaurant, has an upbeat personality and enthusiastic attitude about his food. Before we leave the restaurant, he tells next week's specials. I love this, because it makes me look forward to dining there next week. Kelly, who helps with all of the things (cooking, cleaning, customer service) is a great person, too. I like to talk with her if she doesn't have a lot of orders. The restaurant has a couple of tables. maybe about eight, and a counter with stools. They don't have servers. They tell you when you when your food is ready. Most people take out from here, but I eat here. I enjoy listening to the music, because Don plays music from New Orleans. For the regular menu, I enjoy oyster po' boy, tomato soup or big muffaletta sandwich. The sandwich kind of reminds me of a top-rated sub, on sesame bread with olive salad. With a half of an order, I always have leftovers. Most of the time, I have the specials, particularly the big baked catfish. This past weekend, Don fixed an excellent cream corn special. If they have Oysters Rockefeller, get them. I look forward to eating here!

Yelp
Outstanding Cajun food the crusted, catfish and pork chops were incredibly different and delicious. Their hush puppies and collard greens are the absolute best.

Sean O.

Yelp
Best Cajun food I've had outside of Louisiana, no joke. The definition of a hidden gem. You've gotta try it if you even remotely like New Orleans food

Yelp
Freaking DELICIOUS!!! And the staff was super friendly. Was my first visit, and she told me about all the food and gave me some samples.
google avatar

Mike N.

Yelp
This place is an absolute gem and must try for anyone who hasn't been. Every item on the menu is delicious, fresh and may have you over order. The owner and staff provide samples, recommendations and great to chat with. It's a foodie's dream coming here. My favorite is the alligator sausage po boy.

Yelp
Highly recommended. The food was absolutely fantastic! The Crawfish beignets were so good! The Fried Green tomatoes, gumbo and catfish and shrimp po'boy were also as tasty as I remember when I lived in the Bayou country. A++

Yelp
While I did take a break from Dons food while we lived in San Antonio, now that we are back in the area, it's great to have this place as an additional option to the booths corner location. On my most recent visit, I had a 1/2 Poe boy of fried oysters. It is always fresh and tasty. Joan is absolutely obsessed with the fried green tomatoes with shrimp and remoulade. Forgot to take pictures, but I am positive we will be back for those.

Camille K.

Yelp
Great food, friendly staff, ample seating, rotating specials, reasonable prices, good-sized portions. Can't wait to return!
google avatar

Yelp
Ok, everything we ordered here was delicious. And big portions. The muffaletta sandwich was delicious, not a plain meat and cheese sandwich, the olive salad made it really good. Get it with the delicious tomato soup, they go together so well. Catfish poboy also so good, fresh veggies and not dry at all. Fried mac n cheese with brisket was great and the horseradish and BBQ sauces kicked it up. Great local establishment, staff super nice and friendly. Very clean inside.
google avatar

Myra C.

Yelp
Let's make this simple. Five stars for the Oyster po'boy. This is the real deal. They nailed the bread and the oysters were cooked perfectly. Get it fully dressed. Gumbo is great too. The Roux is the darkest I've seen and the flavor is spot on. The jambalaya was good. It was not drowning in tomato sauce, again great flavors. Beignets good, on the thicker side. The best was customer service. Generous portions and friendly staff. We will return. So nice being treated well.

Jeff H.

Yelp
Every time I've been here the food has been wonderful as was the very friendly service. The catfish po'boy is a real treat!

Yelp
Yummmmmm...my husband raves about this place and we finally got take out from here the other weekend. We ordered a variety of items: jambalaya, shrimp po boy, fried cajun mac n cheese with crab, bacon and corn, 6 beignets and a slice of kings cake. Omg the shrimp po boy was delicious. Way better than anything I tried in New Orleans (prob trying the wrong places while I was there). Favorite thing I got. The fried mac. N cheese was also very delicious and came with the sweet bbq like dipping sauce. Kings cake was good but very doughy and beignets were good but also very doughy. Over food is great here! Would def. Come back and order more things in the future :)

Yelp
Great little Cajun spot in Wilmington, good for a quick lunch takeout. Got the daily special gumbo on a Wednesday, decent portions and good price, quick and easy to grab during a lunch break from work.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Fabulous soft shell crab po-boy specials on some weeks during the late spring and summer. Nuff said. But their fried oyster po-boys are delicious too. All of their po-boys are served with crispy bread, super fresh tomatoes and lettuce, sandwich spread and pickles but I leave off the last two and bring my own cocktail sauce for a sandwich that's to die for. And all of the po-boys can be ordered by the half or whole. They also have good gumbo and if you're feeling adventurous they also have boudin balls and hush puppies but the latter are not your average hush puppy but more of a nawlins take on them. Super friendly employees and did I mention they have beignets. Cheaper and closer than a visit to Cafe Du Monde. Laissez les bons temps rouler!
google avatar

Larry P.

Yelp
muffuletta is way better than a hoagie. I only had 2 in my life. One was from Central Grocery in New Orleans and this one. Just as good. Po boys are great. Can't wait to try everything
google avatar

Steph T.

Yelp
Great Place. Authentic food. Great location! Definitely a must stop by if you're coming in or leaving out!

Justin L.

Yelp
Wow. I was recommended this from my air bnb hosts. Freaking awesome. I got shrimp and chicken jambalaya, deep fried seafood Mac n cheese with crawfish, shrimp, and lobster, and beignets. This is some great food for even greater prices. Take out/carry out orders only for COVID. The chefs were more than happy to share their favorites. I was more than happy. The community agrees as well.

Coco C.

Yelp
Awesome Cajun grub. Great prices. Food is hearty and filling. Great menu choices and quick service. Perfect touch of Louisiana Spices are delectable. Always received good service.

Jeff K.

Yelp
Food has been really good the times I've gotten it. We lived in Baton Rouge and it tasted like real LA cousins.

LA H.

Yelp
Delicious well prepared authentic tasting Cajun food. I've been going here for years! So happy they have two locations. Love the mac & cheese! The gumbo and jambalaya is always perfect. And the alligator sausage is definitely a must have. Also great Poboys, and hush puppies. Everything's just absolutely delicious all the time!

Yelp
Cajun Kate's is amazing!!! Been here and the other location many times, and there is nothing like it in the tri-state area! I like that the Philly Pike location has a dining space with ample seating. It is a nice contrast from the Booth's Corner counter seats. They both offer the same wealth of food options, but they have different specials on certain days. However, the main difference is that Philly Pike accepts credit cards, whereas Booth's Corner only takes cash! I ordered my favorites-- Jambalaya, Crawfish Pie, and the beignets the last time went in. DELICIOUS AS ALWAYS. I am heading to New Orleans soon, and I wonder if it will be as good

Mike R.

Yelp
Pretty darn good. Quality was on the higher end not any cheap ingredients. Would recommend if your looking for something a little different.

Yelp
I had been anxiously awaiting the opening of this location since I first Yelped about it months ago. Then they opened and for the life of me I couldn't get there..that is until today finally. First impressions of the new digs, nice decor and the set up of the kitchen workspace with a counter facing it is exactly how it's set up at Booths Corner only much more spacious. The table area is comfortably cozy. The downside is to say parking is limited is an understatement but it can't be helped. You'll have to get creative. So on a cold day like this I was craving a bowl of slow roasted goodness which is Cochon de Lait Gumbo. Curled up under a blanket bowl in hand watching a good movie I'm perfectly content. Saved the Jambalaya for tomorrows lunch. There are a few things on the menu I still have yet to try that I'm interested in but I wuss out every time. Specifically the gator on a stick and the crawfish pie but I'm working up the nerve. My old favorites have remained the same since day one. Love the consistency at Kate's and looking forward to a dine in experience.

Yelp
We had the pleasure of finding Cajun Kate's when searching for a place to cater a large 65 person New Orleans themed party. We met with the owners who were wonderful, sampled the menu, and were estatic about the quality and authencity of the food. They helped us plan a menu and like clockwork our very large order was ready and fantastic. The Jambalaya and Gator bites were the biggest hits, but many of our guests who spent time in New Orleans enjoyed all the items, po boys, Muffalattas, fried crawfish, red beans with rice, and the slaw and collard sides. The desserts were also a big hit as all enjoyed the banana foster bread pudding and the calas. Very much recommended Cajun Kate's for catering or just dining the food is delicious.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place!! Everything is fresh and delicious. Would highly recommend and will certainly be returning

Patrice G.

Yelp
Food was good. Service shaky. If I give you the money in your hand I expect the change in my hand, not dropped on the counter. Very rude.
google avatar

Jessica I.

Yelp
All I can say is yum! Who knew Wilmington had such authentic Cajun food. Highly recommend

Cen G.

Yelp
This place is amazing! The food is hot and fresh and delicious and the service is nothing short of spectacular. We came in at dinner time on a Saturday night right after a group of 20 and only waited about 5-10 minutes for our order. The team was buzzing around to keep up with all the orders but everyone was just as friendly and helpful as if we were the only ones there, getting us drinks and some additional food to-go that we ordered later. This was just a few days before Mardis Gras so the restaurant was festive with music, decorations, and of course king cakes. There's really nothing on the menu that doesn't taste delicious but I love the mac & cheese (and the spicy glaze it comes with!), fried oysters, and catfish. We will definitely be back.

Trudy F.

Yelp
Great Cajun food - red beans and rice, jambalaya, collard greens, gumbo, fried chicken, fried oysters.

Cody U.

Yelp
great people. great food. i wanna say the best cajun food in pa. I've had other places but they crush it with amazing flavors and great spice. the people are friendly and make a great atmosphere

Yelp
Cajun Kate's has great service and delicious beignets for great prices! I will definitely be returning!!

Yelp
I love the foods found in New Orleans Louisiana: gumbo, jambalaya, muffalatas, PO boys etc. I've been fortunate to have visited the area many times through the years and sampled the best restaurants in that area. Cajun Kate's offers legitimate Cajun food, as-good-as-the-best NOLA restaurants without the need of a plane ticket or a 3 hour flight.. There is nowhere in this area that comes close. When I heard they were opening a second location in Bellefonte on Philly Pike I was excited. But now, after visiting the new location, I feel like an 21 year old visiting their first Mardi Gras. Let the good times roll! Located in a tiny strip mall with limited parking, the new location is a larger version of the Booths Corner spot with about 10 tables and a bathroom. Of course, great music is playing on the stereo as great Cajun food and great music are closely aligned for owner and chef Don. He creates the food but he truly loves the music. And this customer digs it as well. We got fully dressed po boy sandwich halves - my lady had the oyster and I had the shrimp. I also got a small cup of their incredible delicious spicy red beans and rice and a small cup of the most amazing tomato soup with pesto, cheese and croutons. It might not be Cajun but it's OH MY HIGHER POWER delicious. Of course, we took home a quart of chicken and sausage gumbo - my favorite gumbo of any restaurant including any I tried in NOLA - and a large jambalaya. If I could give this restaurant 10 stars, I would. It's THAT good. Great people, great service, great food, great vibe. It doesn't get better than this for Cajun food.
google avatar

Danielle A.

Yelp
Y'all know I'm addicted to food right? It should be a cardinal sin to eat this well This damn tomato garlic parmesan soup! The powered sugar donut things you dip in your coffee! THE CRAWFISH PIE!!!!!! It's CRAZY Seriously this is what I think about when I get to the Delaware state line...these folks can cook!!!! Excellent staff, great prices, and if you catch that parking lot early you might be able to park in the front! This place is perfect!
google avatar

C N.

Yelp
Phenomenal food! Absolutely delicious! Nothing I've gotten here has disappointed. And the staff is so friendly! My only complaint is that I think it's way overpriced. I think everything on the menu should be half the price for the amount you are served.
google avatar

Darin K.

Yelp
My second time here and they don't disappoint, staff is amazing hey offer samples of all of their food which means they want you to taste how good their food is. I love the greens, I don't eat pork but I eat around it, they have a different deep fried man cheese every week, today I had corn and crab fried mac n cheese and it was great along with Their special CTG sauce ask about it , and then had greens and shrimp Gumbo for the weekly special all very flavorful, if you are in the area definitely check it out !

Bobby M.

Yelp
Food was super good, I really liked the fried shrimp and the sauce. They did a fried Mac and cheese ball and tastes so good. I'd come back
google avatar

Brandy T.

Yelp
This place is pretty small...quaint? I ordered takeout and my food was ready when I arrived and still hot when I got home. I had the shrimp po'boy and an order of beignets. The po'boy had their Cajun mayo in lieu of the remoulade I would expect on a po'boy. Still delicious. The beignets were....ok so a traditional beignet is light, pillowy and best served hot, but I'm greedy and will still eat it at room temp. These were...I'm not sure. It tasted like spiced bread. It had the taste of gingerbread. Very strange and unlike any beignet I've ever had. Ever. If it's their own signature recipe, then that explains it, but if that were noted somewhere I wouldn't have ordered them. Everyone was very nice and courteous so I'm sure I'll return. Curious about their pralines now...

Christyn H.

Yelp
My first time trying Cajun Kate's was a success! The food was really good and the service was quick and friendly! I will be back!

Rich S.

Yelp
Tried the catfish po boy, gumbo, and red beans and rice. All of it tasted great. Will definitely be back to try more.
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
Like stepping right into NOLA. Amazing weekly specials that never disappoint. Jambalaya is actually better than most I've had in New Orleans itself.
google avatar

Peggy R.

Yelp
I like Cajun Kate's. We order from here maybe two or three times a month. Most of the time everything is delicious. I usually get the catfish fingers and a small tomato Parmesan soup. Love them both. Hubby usually gets one of the po'boys and he likes them. The banana foster bread pudding is really good also. Only reason I don't give five stars is I feel they are a little pricey. Plus the last three times I ordered the catfish fingers twice they were not cooked all the way through.

S B.

Yelp
But it's not New Orleans. Outside of Louisiana no one does Cajun correctly - just not the same. Their food is good but it's not Cajun, more "Cajun-like". Their beignets are not beignets and their cafe' au lait isn't. One visit to the French Market in NOLA or the Coffee Call in Baton Rouge or places in Lafayette tells the tale. It's decent food, but it shouldn't be confused with the real deal. Maybe it's the raw materials????

Carlos M.

Yelp
Wonderful staff. Wonderful food! I have never been disappointed! Good value! Excellent service!

Tim R.

Yelp
Great neighborhood find! Would highly recommend especially for takeout. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
google avatar

Allison L.

Yelp
The jambalaya is very good. Sometimes there's a long line, but the service is pretty smooth. The employees are friendly and they're always sure to engage customers in conversation. Be on the lookout for unique specials: i.e. Frog legs or seafood gumbo. Also be sure to check the hours or call before you visit. They have unique hours.
google avatar

Ryan K.

Yelp
Don & Kate have taken their Cajun food and made it even better with this location. We've been going to their location in Booth's Corner for 10+ years and have always had great food and service. Recommended to anyone that enjoys Cajun food.
google avatar

Tony A.

Yelp
Um, wow! Shrimp Po Boy, better than any I've had in Louisiana. And then, the gator on a stick. Insane!can't wait to sample more. If you like Cajun or even think you might like it, you must try this place. Well done!
google avatar

Faith Y.

Yelp
Good service, Food is consistently delicious every time. Also the people that work there are very nice. Pretty much the only legit NOLA food I've come across in Delaware I love the shrimp Po boy and Cajun Mac and cheese
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
I don't care for the burnt mac n cheese or the mushy crawfish pie. The service is delightful. I don't see what all the rage is. The flavors are different. The mac n cheese filling is tasty. I think I'll give them another shot. I think I'll stick to something safer... Well, I thought the mac n cheese was safe lol
