"Set in an Asiatown strip mall, Cajun Kitchen is Houston’s preeminent destination for Viet-Cajun—a hybrid cuisine that emerged when Vietnamese refugees along the Gulf Coast began applying the techniques of Southeast Asian seafood boils to local crawfish. Though it can be found nationally nowadays, Viet-Cajun is undeniably a Houston specialty. Originally opened in 2005 as a traditional Cajun crawfish restaurant, Cajun Kitchen took on a more Viet-Cajun focus in 2015 when current owner John Nguyen assumed the reins. Nguyen, who grew up in Norway, was first introduced to crawfish by Vietnamese relatives in Louisiana. Originally moving to Houston to work in a corporate job, he found a passion for crawfish. Today, Cajun Kitchen’s menu ranges from traditional crawfish seasonings such as garlic butter to more Southeast Asian styles, such as a Thai basil–perfumed variation. The Kitchen Special, which comes with citrus wedges, is particularly popular. Nguyen has also extended the Viet-Cajun ethos to other seafood dishes. Think: mussels steamed in lemongrass and Maine razor clams topped with Vietnamese chili butter sauce and Vietnamese coriander leaves. Due to the seasonal availability of fresh crawfish, typically from January to July, Cajun Kitchen has diversified its menu beyond its signature crustaceans. Throughout the year, the restaurant serves classic Cajun favorites such as gumbo, po’ boys, and crab pan roasts. There are also traditional Vietnamese street foods, like fried rice, grilled squid, and escargot. Know Before You Go The peak months for crawfish in Houston are from February through April. During this time, you’ll get the freshest pick of crawfish. During off-peak times, the crawfish may come frozen—so consider ordering some of Cajun Kitchen’s other Viet-Cajun dishes to satisfy the craving. Ask for a side of fresh mayo for dipping to complete the experience." - Dan Q Dao

"The strip mall Viet-Cajun restaurant Cajun Kitchen in Chinatown serves crawfish year round, with seasonings including a rich garlic butter and a bright thai basil. Or there’s the “kitchen special” with refreshing lemons and oranges keeping your crawfish cozy in the seafood boil bag. Crawfish boils here have a two-pound minimum so show up hungry or bring a pal. This spot is laid back and casual, and it’s constantly prepared for seafood fans—and the subsequent mess they bring—with tables covered in vinyl and paper towel rolls at every table." - gianni greene, chelsea thomas

"At the strip mall Viet-Cajun restaurant Cajun Kitchen in Chinatown, you can get your fill of Vietnamese food like a green mango salad and mực nướng sa tế (grilled squid marinated in garlic and chili sauce), alongside Cajun dishes like boudin balls and tender turkey necks. First time at Cajun Kitchen, and it was alright. Snails were good taste like everywhere else. We ordered the No 1 Fatass medium viet Cajun flavor. The flavor was had some kick, and it was good, could use some more buttery flavor to it. Lots of onion and chili flavor in it. We also order garlic noodles. IT WAS LACKING FLAVOR. Garlic noodles had no garlic, no taste, was very disappointed in that dish.

The food was good. This was the first time we had Oregon crawfish those bad boys are BIG! The house special fried rice was filled with flavor pairs that with some basil shrimp! Man, hol up! The house kitchen crawfish was great. Also, I had the loaded fries jot pictured again that was really flavorful. Not to mention, the portion size was plentiful. I still had a lot to take home with me. We will be back.

I came here today with my family, and it's such a lovely place. We ordered some crawfish, garlic noodle, and a variety of appetizers. The food is absolutely delicious, with perfect textures and delightful flavors. Huge thanks to Susan and Tyler for their recommendations and excellent service, even though the restaurant was incredibly busy. We'll definitely be comming back. Keep up the fantastic work, guys!

Nice size crawfish and the spicy kitchen flavor is soooo delicious. The crab cakes were actually the best I've had in such a long time. BTW the sausage is not that lunchmeat tasting cheap stuff other places give you either.

Recommended place for cajun seafood in Vietnamese style. Crawfishes with house source is excellent. Other dishes, such as the oysters (grilled, or Italian style), are worth trying. Plenty of parking spaces in front. Could be dangerous / not safe at night. There is a small note in front of the restaurant regarding this issue.

I recently came across an ad on Instagram for live crawfish from California/Oregon, offered by Cajun Kitchen. Intrigued by the promise of fresh seafood, I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, my experience was a mixed bag. On the positive side, the flavor of the crawfish was decent. The seasoning had a nice kick, reminiscent of authentic Cajun cuisine. However, the quality of the crawfish left much to be desired. Most of the crawfish were either already dead or frozen upon arrival, which was quite disappointing. This significantly impacted the overall freshness and texture, making the meal less enjoyable. Despite these issues, the crawfish did manage to satisfy our craving for one last crawfish fix. It wasn't the best experience, but it served its purpose. If you're in a pinch and desperate for some crawfish, Cajun Kitchen might be worth a try. However, if you're looking for top-notch quality, you might want to explore other options. In summary, Cajun Kitchen's live crawfish from California/Oregon had decent flavor but fell short in terms of freshness. It was a passable experience, but not one I'd rush to repeat.

Best crawfish ever!! Their Tail basil and kitchen specials flavors are fully recommended and must to try!! Don’t forget order extra steamed rice for mixing with the source. The oysters are very fresh as well.

I would like to start by saying this is some of the best Viet Cajun food I've ever had in my life. I visited Cajun Kitchen for my birthday. I ordered two pounds of crawfish (extra spicy kitchen style). The price was $10 per pound when I visited, and they were nice sized crawfish. The heat level was definitely spicy. I normally can go to the highest heat level at restaurants, but this was completely different. I recommend that anyone who is not a heat-seeker to stick with the first two heat levels. The citrus and onion was a wonderful addition to the crawfish. The Italy style oysters were cooked to perfection and were VERY large. The wait staff was very nice. I would definitely recommend this price
