"Fans of Cara Haltiwanger’s pandemic-era “bucket drops” can now come to Calabama’s permanent home in Hollywood for a dependable dose of Southern comfort. Headlining the menu are Haltiwanger’s signature breakfast sandwiches layered with bacon, egg, cheese, grilled onions, and avocado and served with a proprietary spicy-sweet dipping sauce, along with other staples from her Alabama childhood, including sweet tea, delicate biscuits, and pimento cheese. — Cathy Chaplin, former senior editor" - Rebecca Roland, Matthew Kang, Mona Holmes

"Of all LA’s pandemic-era pop-up success stories, none captured the city’s attention quite like Calabama and its breakfast sandwiches lowered via red bucket from a fire escape. These days, the one-woman show operates out of a tiny walk-up window near Santa Monica Boulevard and Highland. And though her red bucket is gone, the delicious cheese-oozing breakfast sandwiches remain. Think of Calabama’s signature item as a breakfast grilled cheese, built on two pieces of griddled white bread stacked with eggs, avocado, and bacon. It’s buttery and salty, but also surprisingly balanced, especially after you apply their signature smoky dipping sauce with a sweet-spicy kick. Meals at Calabama happen fast, too. The time between placing your order and demolishing a sandwich on the sidewalk won’t last more than 15 minutes, making this place a no-brainer for a quick breakfast or lunch in Hollywood. photo credit: Brant Cox Food Rundown photo credit: Jakob Layman OG Breakfast Sandwich This is the sandwich that put Calabama on the map in 2020, and we’re thrilled to report it’s just as good now. It’s a simple sandwich: soft scrambled eggs, avocado, grilled onions, crispy brown sugar bacon (there’s a vegetarian option as well), and a few slices of perfectly molten American cheese, all on white bread toasted with a generous amount of butter. It’s a decadent sandwich, but not such an undertaking it’ll send you back to bed. photo credit: Brant Cox Biscuit Sandwich The other half of Calabama’s menu features three-inch-high biscuit sandwiches filled with eggs and a choice of caramelized bacon or pimento cheese. These are just as rich as the OG sandwich, except the fluffy biscuit is slighty overpowered by the eggs and cheese. So we like to order a biscuit a la carte instead. They’re $5 and taste incredible dunked in the same sweet-spicy dipping sauce that comes with the sandwiches." - Brant Cox

"Fans of Cara Haltiwanger’s East Hollywood fire escape sandwich operation Calabama were thrilled when she opened a permanent space on November 15 in a tiny, free-standing building on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and McCadden. Haltiwanger is preparing her signature breakfast sandwiches layered with bacon, egg, cheese, grilled onions, and avocado, along with other staples from her Alabama childhood, including sweet tea, delicate biscuits, and pimento cheese." - Mona Holmes

"Calabama, originally a pop-up started by Cara Haltiwanger during the COVID-19 lockdowns, is now a permanent restaurant in Hollywood. The venue serves Southern-style breakfast sandwiches and other Alabama childhood staples like sweet tea, biscuits, and pimento cheese. Haltiwanger, who started her culinary journey with pop-ups, chose this location to offer a steady dose of Southern comfort in a 256-square-foot space. The restaurant features takeout service only, with its open kitchen visible to customers, and a simple menu focusing on quality Southern food." - Cathy Chaplin

Heard about this spot on Instagram and all the foodies are raving about it. Had to go check it out for myself. Easily the best breakfast sandwich in LA right now. The Og with bacon is absolutely perfect. The portions and execution is spot on and the flavors are rich and satisfying. Dipping each bite in the sauce is mandatory, but even taking a bite without the sauce hits so hard. Loved the environment and the bar style eating area. The service is so spectacular, warm energy and good music. Can't recommend this place enough! Come check it out if you're nearby and want a satisfying bite of southern hospitality.

This place basically does one thing and it does it STUNNINGLY. The sandwiches are made with such care. Evenly spaced onions, eggs made to fluffy perfection and buttery white bread is perfectly soft and crunchy. The dipping sauce is an evenly balanced spicy BBQ. This place is within walking distance of my house, so I’m in trouble!

If you're looking for a slice of home cooking in Hollywood, look no further than Calabama's bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. This sandwich absolutely blew me away! The balance of flavors and textures was pure perfection. The buttery, substantial biscuit held up a golden ratio of bacon, egg, and cheese like a pro. And let’s talk about the eggs—wow. These were, without question, the best I’ve ever had. Cooked to perfection and seasoned flawlessly, they elevated the whole experience. Of course, I’d be remiss not to mention the star that ties it all together: the tangy dipping sauce. I saved the last few drops to grace some of my other humble foods later, but let’s be honest—its true home is drizzled on Calabama’s biscuit sandwich. I noticed there aren’t many pictures of this biscuit-y masterpiece on Google yet, so I’m adding mine for consideration... It’s serious, you guys. Calabama nailed it with this sandwich, and I can’t wait to come back for more!

Soft opening and they’re serving the most basic o.g. grilled breakfast sandwich - and it is near perfection - mostly because of the super soft and almost delicate mounds of scrambled eggs. the calabama dipping sauce does not disappoint either. Coffee was solid with dose it yourself simple syrup, almond milk & half/half additives. Excited to return in a week or so for the biscuit sandwich - which i presume will be ethereally light.

Small, minimal sandwich stand appearing like a mirage on Santa Monica Blvd. A single walk-up window with a short menu handwritten on cardboard. Windows on 2 other sides providing every angle of a smoothly-operated kitchen: bread buttered and prepared with cheese on one table, a centered stove and griddle setup where scrambled eggs are tenderly folded on one burner while bacon sizzles on another. On the griddle, the bread is grilled to perfection (cheese melting into it like a dream) while the sandwich is built with care: bacon, egg, avocado, bread lovingly placed on top before being turned over one last time to evenly warm every ingredient. The sandwich itself is cheesy, buttery heaven. A light garlic flavor I didn’t expect, the eggs soft and perfect, great bacon. Oh, and the spicy dipping sauce adding smoke like a rug that ties the room together acting as the flawless final touch on the kind of sandwich that reminds you of home, of simpler times. Don’t miss this understated little restaurant with a great backstory (check out the piece on them in Eater LA from last week), but I don’t think I need to say that. Soon, the line to order will be so long on Saturday and Sunday mornings, you wouldn’t be able to miss it if you tried.

Stopped by for a breakfast sandwich last weekend. Well executed and great sauce. It was delicious honestly, I'll be back. Food 5 stars. Service only loses a star because of no custom orders were being allowed and my gf doesn't eat meat or avocados. Atmosphere gets 3 stars because it's essentially a stand in a parking lot. maybe that's part of the appeal? But I wonder if they could add music and a nice place to eat I may stay rather than take mine to go. All in all a wonderful new addition to the neighborhood!

What a great experience today. Been a big fan of her bucket drop and now her storefront. So happy to see her success that is well deserved. Food was great and the people that showed up were awesome and actually made friends there. Next week her hot sauce will be ready along with her biscuits. Can’t wait!
