LA's Most Exciting Fall Restaurant Openings 2024

"Opening: November During the pandemic, Calabama owner Cara Haltiwange became famous for delivering her Alabama-inspired breakfast sandwiches and hot sauces via rope and bucket from the fourth-floor fire escape of her East Hollywood apartment. We were big fans. Now, after all the ups and downs (get it?), Calabama is opening a full brick-and-mortar space in West Hollywood. The menu will revolve around her signature breakfast grilled cheese sandwich stuffed with things like egg, bacon, and avocado, plus a few new Southern sides." - garrett snyder, sylvio martins

Celebrity-Loved LA Breakfast Sandwich Bucket Drop Calabama Has Closed | Eater LA

"I learned that the innovative East Hollywood underground restaurant Calabama, which famously used a bright red bucket to lower sandwiches to customers during the pandemic, is no more—or at least the sandwiches are gone for now. Owner Cara Haltiwanger dropped her last sandwich from her apartment building’s fire escape and told Eater the sandwich could return only for limited events and pop-ups outside her home, since she’s moving on to bottling and packaging her bespoke hot sauce under the Calabama name and pursuing new collaborations and creative projects. Saying goodbye has been tough for her because she’s made so many friends and met cool people — including celebrities like Will Ferrell and Halle Berry — but the Calabama brand itself is still around, hot sauce and all." - Farley Elliott
