The staff is genuinely friendly, offering warm greetings despite the understandable chaos of a grand opening. That said, if you’re looking for fast fast food, be prepared to practice patience; the service is operating at a leisurely, perhaps more "California time" pace. The menu is robust, featuring an impressive array of sides, and the quality of the ingredients is immediately apparent—everything tasted wonderfully fresh. The fried catfish was a definitive highlight, perfectly prepared with a beautiful crunch. On the other end of the spectrum, the lobster roll failed to impress; a disappointing detour on an otherwise promising menu. We also had a minor mix-up with the kids' meal, where the stated fish wasn't in fact that kind of fish, and, alas, a shrimp skewer I ordered went missing entirely. Here's where the logistics earn their own star: a quick review of the receipt before leaving confirmed the skewer was never charged, saving me the awkward conversation. But the true game-changer was the exceptional intervention. A gentleman, who was the CEO, observed that my mother wasn't thrilled with her dish. He promptly introduced himself, listened, and without hesitation, offered her a gift card to return and try something new. That gesture was not just kind; it was a masterful display of business acumen. It shows a genuine commitment to the customer experience, turning a few opening-week stumbles into a resounding win. While not every dish was a home run on this first visit, that level of proactive service ensures I will be giving California Fish Grill a "do-over" much sooner than later. They are certainly leaning in the right direction.

This fast food fish restaurant serves up pretty tasty bowls. You can select your fish selection, the sauce and a side. Or you can order the combo bowls. The price is the reasonable and similar to cava or Chipotle. But they have healthy sustainable seafood. They serve wild caught fish as well as farmed fish. The protein bowl is loaded with shrimp, salmon, swai, grilled chicken. It is pretty flavorful. The salmon burrito bowl is pretty tasty as well. We also tried the rockfish on rice and it was delicious. The chicken on rice is pretty dry so I don't suggest it. The price is really reasonable for healthy seafood fast.

Excellent!! 😁 I’ve been waiting a long time to post this review lol. I first went to California Fish Grill in Palm Desert CA two years ago and was hooked (pun intended). The next time I was in LA I was sure to visit. I wrote a review saying I wished it was a national chain and two years later they open their first east coast store right where I live! So, you’re welcome Virginia 😏. The food here tasted exactly as I remembered. The salmon was perfectly cooked 🐟. The garlic butter is my favorite sauce (I usually ask for extra), especially mixed in with the salmon and the rice 🍚. The roasted corn is delicious 🌽, well worth the upgrade! The coconut shrimp on the side are a necessity as well 🍤! No real negatives I can think of from this visit! There are not many good seafood spots that I know of in the DMV, and CFG fills that void perfectly! The prices are very reasonable 💰, the staff are welcoming and nice 👨‍🍳👩‍🍳, and the restaurant itself is pleasant and well designed. I can’t wait to eat here again and I highly, highly recommend you try it as well!!!

Another day of waddling back to my vehicle after promising myself im not going to over eat again! Easy order process, and the cashier was super cool and helpful. Branzino/salmon with rice and corn, side of Brussels sprouts. Fish was delicious corn was really good and rice was mid, but nothing ever really compares to homemade rice does it? Portions were huge, I was definitely past full when finished! The Brussels sprouts were so fire u almost ate them all before touching my main plate! Wife and daughter got the salmon bowl and teriyaki branzino bowl which were both delicious as well! Strawberry margaritas to start were a good touch also while waiting for my food! I’ll definitely be back and ready to try new menu items which I also scoped out that looked really good while waiting today! Def a new go to & would recommend everyone to try ASAP!

So happy they opened up here in Fairfax, I go to GMU so it’s the perfect lunch spot with classmates! The bowls are packed with protein and I priced really well. The staff is super friendly in the ambience is kind of fancy, but still has that casual aspect to it. Definitely gonna be coming back on the weekly basis.

We came in this afternoon and were highly pleased with the service, atmosphere and quality of food! The manager Daniel is great and made sure all customers were taken care of and had what they needed. The food came out quick and was delicious! We can't wait to come back again and try out the huge menu!

I came to California Fish Grill because of all of the rave reviews on Yelp, and they were pretty accurate! I was looking for a healthier fast casual option for food that wasn't too pricy, and I found it in California Fish Grill. I love that they have a sustainable sea food policy, in that they only use seafood that is abundantly available in order to preserve the sea creatures from extinction for future generations. It's a super unique and kind policy that I can get behind, and honestly should be what we are aiming for as a society. My husband picked up my food so I can't say much about the atmosphere or the inside of the restaurant, but the order was accurate and had all of the extras that I wanted. I ordered the Salmon Burrito Bowl, which normally has: Cajun marinated salmon, white rice, beans, sliced avocado, tomato-cilantro mix, pickled onions, cream sauce & Roasted Tomatillo Salsa. I ordered mine with the cauliflower rice instead, and opted to take out the beans and pickled onions. I was a bit worried about the portion size as it looked deceivingly small, however I was pleasantly surprised at how much food was packed into this container. I could barely finish it and might need to share it next time. The salmon was tender and moist, and the Cajun spices were incredibly tasty and light. Every bit of the bowl had flavor, from the fish itself to the cauliflower rice, salsa, and cream sauce. I loved my added dynamite sauce which was perfectly spicy and flavorful, and the green goddess sauce which was my absolute favorite; It's a cilantro sauce with a tangy flavor. The bowl was a 7/10 for me. I also ordered the Cajun Rockfish Taco which had a corn tortilla (I really appreciate it when a restaurant uses corn tortillas as opposed to flour as it generally has more flavor and is much healthier, not to mention more authentic), spicy roasted corn, green goddess cilantro sauce, tomatoes, cabbage, cilantro, and pickled onions (which I did not get). The rockfish in the taco was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Again the Cajun seasoning and the green goddess sauce really made the taco taste great. The veggies were fresh and the cabbage crunchy. I would say that this was a 8/10 as well for me. I do wish they had a create your own bowl option and I hope to see that on the menu in the future, as it would still be using the same sea food that was available, just with different bowl ingredients. The only thing I would say that I didn't like was the fact that they most likely used canola oil in their seasoning and cooking which is usually a stomach irritant for me, and there was a decent amount of it. I am still rating it higher just because it's a healthy, sustainable and cheap option which is tasty, and most people who don't have my stomach issues would be fine to order it. TLDR: California Fish Grill is a healthy, sustainable, delicious, and cheap option for food. The seafood is fresh and the veggies as well, and the sauces and seasonings are on point. They get orders correct despite a lot of modifications, and I would recommend them to others who are trying to eat a little healthier while keeping on a budget.

This location has only been open a couple of days and truly have it together as a restaurant. The choices in seafood are extensive and the food we ordered (e.g., fried catfish and a protein bowl) were both excellent. After placing our orders, we filled our drinks and found a seat; the food came out within about ten minutes. Clearly, each meal is prepared after it is ordered. The portion sizes were too large for our elderly appetites. Perhaps they will modify the menu so that the "kids menu" can also be served to seniors. As the English say, "This is good value for the money". We look forward to returning.

Excellent food, clean and spacious dining room, attentive staff and reasonable prices. I had the grilled rock fish bowl with brown rice. Fish was very fresh, avocado was beautiful and ripe, brown rice perfectly cooked. This will be my go-to for sure.

Set you expectations correctly and I think you'll be pleased. This is a quick service restaurant so you're not going to get fine dining quality seafood, but it is overall pretty good. I had the grilled rockfish which was very fresh, and the clam chowder. I enjoyed both of them but the side dish of white rice was pretty basic. It tasted like Uncle Ben's, and I wouldn't be surprised if that is what it was. My only other complaint was that the person clearing the tables was hovering over us the entire time. It felt like they were trying to push me out the door before I even finished eating, and the restaurant wasn't close to full.

TLDR; my go to order is at the bottom ALSO HEALTHY YUMMY OPTION IN FFX GO TRY IT! -- What a huge surprise for a fast casual fish spot next to the PGA store. I WAS NOT EXPECTING THE FOOD TO BE SO SO GOOD WOW! I absolutely loved how fresh the options were and how healthy it is for such a good price. Pro tip, don't get a bowl. Get the plated option, you will get more food! You can order on the two kiosks or in person, I'd recommend that option bc it's easier to share what you want than scroll thru all their options and there's a lot to choose from! Service was quick and they walk around to collect your plates and trays. FOOD: We got the grilled specialty Fish Branzino - fried fishy taste but so good Tilapia - softer white fish not as fishy taste Sauce Sweet chili glaze- SO GOOD I'd pick this one every time Garlic butter- not very saucy doesn't taste like much, I'd recommend having sauce on the side to dip your fish into Sides French fries- crunchy and well seasoned, really good Diced rosemary zucchini- it was SO good! Kale slaw- I don't prefer how grassy kale tastes so do with that info as you will White rice- seasoned well I really liked this with my fish Overall- my perfect combo order Tilapia with sweet chili glaze (sauce on side for dipping) with white rice and diced rosemary zucchini plate (putting this here so I know my exact order next time)

I think next time, I will spend a little more to upgrade the zucchini to something else. You get to pick the sauce for the fish - I picked the sweet chili sauce which actually wasn't overly sweet and was a bit tangy. I loved it. I'll definitely come back to try more!

This California chain has arrived in the DMV! If you are looking for a solid and casual spot, this is it! The food is fresh, portions are generous, and the service is friendly. We shared two different types of fish , the branzino and the sway. The garlic sauce is definitely a must try and the Cajun seasoning was a good flavor profile. Everything was cooked just right, tender and had a rounded smoky flavor. Good spot if you are looking for something healthy-ish, fast, casual, and consistent! The area around it has been growing with so many new options.

Wow, I had no idea this place existed until my friend recommended it for our dinner date. I got the fish tacos and she got the original fish and chip's. It was incredibly busy for a Friday night, so either order ahead or be prepared to wait a while (both to order and go get your food). I also got one of the ready-made cocktails, but unfortunately it was really salty??? I understand a salt rim but this tasted like someone accidentally poured a tablespoon of salt into it. As for the fish, they were really crispy and seasoned well. Fries weren't anything crazy and the slaw was okay. I'd be down to come back and try a couple other menu items once it slows down a bit

One thing that sets California Fish Grill apart from other places is that they say that their seafood is sustainably sourced. They have a diverse menu with menu items including bowls, skewers, tacos, and soups. The fish tasted fresh and felt like it was on par with a meal from a build-your-own bowl place like Cava. I really liked the tacos here. They were a good size, and the fish was deep fried to perfection. If you are looking to get seafood in a fast casual setting, California Fish Grill is a great option. Seating: The dining room is huge. There's a lot of places to sit inside. Parking: There's a lot of parking in the shopping center. It get's busy with the Cava and Tea Do around the corner, but you'll be able to find a spot.

This exceptional new seafood restaurant is exactly what Fairfax has been missing. I had the privilege of attending their soft opening today, with the official launch set for Monday, September 22nd. The menu impresses with its commitment to fresh, sustainable, healthy options, featuring an outstanding selection of rockfish, salmon, branzino, lobster, shrimp, and whitefish. Each protein can be prepared to your preference--teriyaki, Cajun, grilled or fried--and served as part of a customizable bowl or as a traditional plated entrée. They had an extensive choice of sides as well. Each dish arrived beautifully plated. The staff demonstrates genuine enthusiasm for the menu, readily answering questions and consistently checking on diners throughout their visit. I opted for two lobster rolls accompanied by a side, while my husband enjoyed the Cajun shrimp tacos served with two sides. Both dishes exceeded our expectations in terms of flavor, freshness, and execution. We're already planning our return visit to explore more of their menu offerings.

Let's get down to the food, I ordered the Cajun grilled shrimp taco combo , two get two tacos on your choice of corn or flour tortillas, STUFFED with delicious Cajun shrimp, pickled red onions, spicy roasted corn, tomatoes and a spicy dynamite sauce; it comes with your choice of two sides, I ordered fries and pinto beans. I was impressed at the freshness and great flavor of all that was in my plate! Their presentation is more of a casual sit down restaurant than fast food restaurant, they provide real silverware, and your food comes out on a real plate. The Grand Opening is Monday 9/22 go out and enjoy a restaurant that does seafood right, you won't be sorry!!

It tasted AMAZING, and since I love fish, this was perfect. They offer plenty of flavors like garlic butter and Cajun, and you can add sauces like tartar. Very filling! * Cleanliness/Setting: The place just soft-opened for a friends-and-family event today. The space is minimalistic yet artsy. Menu photos are vibrant and appealing, and everything looks very well put together. * Service: From the moment I walked in until I left, every staff member was friendly and attentive. Each person received a rundown and menu recommendations, which was helpful since it was most of our first time here. I was checked on multiple times, and plates and napkins were promptly brought. 10/10 customer service! Excited to try the dynamite shrimp bowl next, since I also heard it's really good.

Attended the family and friends event! What a wonderful experience! They were all so friendly- inviting and helpful! My food was good, nice and flavorful! Loved the tomatillo salsa! I had the Cajun tacos. I wanted a little more spice! My food was a little cold but it was the throat day open and it was packed! I will go again and try some more options! Lots of things to choose from- platters, tacos, bowls and sandwiches. Even chicken if you have someone in your party who won't eat fish! It's clean and fresh. Decent amount of seating. I have high hopes that it will just keep getting better as they get going!

I've never had this chain so I was excited that a location popped up in FFX!! The portions were sizable and the fish were super fresh. Service was very quick and friendly and staff were willing to educate new customers on the ordering process and different protein options. The store was busy busy on a Friday night but staff were handling it like pros keeping everything clean and organized! I saw they're also bringing 6$ margs soon!!! I also really appreciate they put their protein value on the menu items online. Can't wait to come back to try more of their bowls/plates!!

Came here with family and ordered rockfish (island teriyaki style), rice, and zucchini. My husband got olive oil sauce on his rockfish instead. We all thought the food was very good, albeit with smaller portions and slightly higher prices. This wasn't totally surprising, since they are serving only sustainable fish and ingredient quality seems high. Service was good. Multiple workers stopped by to check on our table, when they weren't working the cash register. Workers are constantly cleaning other tables. Only two minor downsides: our order was taken wrong and we got a kids' meal instead of an adult meal. It wasn't worth correcting. Also when the order came out, one of the sides was wrong. It was immediately rectified by the manager. Restaurant is clean and atmosphere bustling. I'm happy to see businesses in this local area get a lot of traffic. This restaurant concept is still unique in the Fairfax area, so I hope this business sticks around for a while.

We got the fish & chips and the thin, tiny filet of cod was dry and overcooked, and way too much breading-to-fish ratio. Fries were seasoned with parsley and some other spice mix, but that's not how fish & chips are supposed to be served. Not a great meal at all. Chicken tenders, juicy chicken but seems like the oil is too hot because the breading wasn't good and felt extra crispy but not in a good way. Service was ok, counter service - but for the price, should at least bring the food to the table. Wants to be a high-end fast food place but was certainly not fast and was largely an underwhelming, overpriced experience. Oh, and while we waited our 20 min for our food, the staff working had ordered pizzas which were delivered. ‍ we should have realized if the staff doesn't eat the food, why should we ?

I ordered the salmon & swai combo and also tried the branzino with a side of fries and zucchini. Everything was fresh and cooked well, the fish tender and nicely seasoned. The fries were okay, and the zucchini had a bit too much rosemary for our taste, which made it hard to enjoy. Overall, a good experience, and I'm looking forward to trying more from the menu.

I'm genuinely perplexed. I ordered the salmon wasabi bowl and a few other items today, and for something that sounded like it would pack a punch, it completely fell flat. The flavors were muted, almost like the cooks were hesitant to season or take any risks. And I'm not talking about salt. This needed spice, umami, something to make you say, wow! This dish had real potential, but it just didn't deliver. Disappointed is an understatement.

The grilled rockfish and zucchini was a huge hit for the diabetic hungry man I ordered for. Very tough to get tasty food for this man - however, this turns out to be one of the main reasons I will be a return customer. Where else can you get reasonably priced grilled fish with a healthy and delicious side veg quickly on the go? This is a high point in general. The different types of fish they have is a happy choice. The mediocre: clam chowder. Decent for a pick-up spot but too watery for me. Not the worst in the area. Add the oyster crackers. The no-for-next-time: there will be a next time but in my opinion, half the rosemary for the fries. Or substitute for a different side. The fries I ate with less rosemary were good.

I had the opportunity to attend their opening event on Sunday Sept 21st in Fairfax. The food is truthfully amazing! It's very fresh, tasty and healthy!! I must mention Daniel Cedilos as he was so very pleasant and helpful with his suggestions on what to order. I had the Salmon & swai comb with corn and my husband had the chicken and both were mouth watering and savory. The portions were more than enough that I had leftovers for my lunch today! I would definitely return at this restaurant and cater our company luncheons going forward! Waiting for the Rockville location to open!

I enjoyed my meal of grilled fish, zucchini and rice. It was pretty basic but good. My daughters got the fish and sticks, and the fish tacos. Husband got a spicy shrimp dish and to our surprise he thought it was very good despite the fact he doesn't like spcy food. The service was friendly and fast, the environment clean.

This is a very budget friendly seafood restaurant. You place your order and they bring it to the table. The Bronzino that I had was excellent as well as the kale slaw. The ambiance is fine but there is very limited seating. Overall an excellent experience.

I was really surprised how flavorful the food was. I had the giant shrimp with white rice and fries. The food tasted better than most nice seafood restaurants around here. The garlic butter flavoring was really savory. The fries were very crispy. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Ordered the protein bowl while family ordered other dishes. After 18min, the food was ready. The protein bowl was good, the chicken, fish, and shrimp didn't have a lot of flavor and the bowl was filled mainly with a large bed of rice. My wife's dynamite shrinp was actually pretty good. The staff did a very well. Although service may have been good, it all starts with the food... and though it wasn't bad, it just wasn't memorable enough to make me say 'we're definitely coming back here'.

They have a nice setup inside and some outdoor seating too. The service was really great. I had some questions about the menu and the staff made sure I didn't order something I couldn't eat due to an allergy. The food was good and met our expectations. Salmon was flavorful in the salmon burrito bowl. The battered fish was huge and crispy. My favorite side was the fries which are seasoned with Cajun seasoning I believe. Really tasty!

The food is very tasty and delicious fresh homemade and the service the best by far in the area and DMV

Order for takeout last night and had the one of the best fish sandwich in a long time. I can only imagine how it would taste if I ate it there.. 9.3 out of 10 . My son said chicken sandwich was good. He gave it a. 8.3 out of 10. Had the shrimp it was a little bit hard, but great flavor . 7.8 out of 10. I can't recall what my wife had but she said it was 9.2 out of 10 . Can't wait to try the rest of the menu. If you're looking for a good fish sandwich, they have it.

This was my first visit and I highly recommend this place. I had the grilled wild-caught rockfish - fresh, moist, perfectly grilled with a nice garlic sauce. Friendly and fast.

I thought this was a sit down establishment but it's fast food. TikTok lied this place wasn't that great. Ordering took longer than it needed to due to a language barrier with person at the register, she snatched the menu out of my hand to what "green goddess" was, so not only did she not speak English well she was unfamiliar with the menu. . It was roughly $50 that included tip which in hindsight I would not have left one because you serve yourself your drink and they callout your name to pick up the food. Sooooo tip for what??? But I didn't know since it was my first and last visit. Food came out ok my fries and mom's fries were cold they replaced them not very happily. My cod and breaded shrimp were good. The street corn side was very bland. They were stingy with the lemon I had to ask twice because the first time they gave us 3 small skinny wedges for two people. Kale slaw was bland. I did see the manager enjoying his food as I walked past to the restroom he probably received temperature appropriate food. I definitely do not recommend.

Went for the first time today and ordered a wasabi salmon bowl. Tasty but I asked for salad rather than rice. Super annoying lettuce (big, frilly) that you can only eat with a knife and fork or risk looking bad while stuffing your mouth with ungainly lettuce. How about at least a rough chop?

I've visited here three times and have enjoyed each visit. The seafood is prepared and seasoned well and is never dry. The sides selections match well. Will keep returning.

Similar to other reviews, the food was pretty good, but the service staff definitely was not interested in being welcoming, or being efficient. If they can work out their weekend service kinks, love to reassess.

Great food at reasonable prices. Definitely want to try other fish but the branzino was delicious. The kale coleslaw was very fresh and a nice side. Not a fan of the zucchini but glad I tried it. Service was very nice even with how crowded it was. (Skip the lobster roll. No bueno.)

Everything was really good here. Literally everything was fresh and well prepared. As a pescatarian so glad this opened up!

It was a nice looking place, clean, well organized, but my husband and I can't eat Black pepper so we asked for our fish plain with just oil and it was cooked with black pepper. We won't ever go back.

Terrible service and/or severely understaffed. Over 30mins to get the food (one bowl and one plate) even when the place is not busy at all. Very poorly organized- nobody could provide any idea of how much longer we had to wait. Will not be back.

I went with my daughter and husband. My husband and I got the Atlantic Salmon and my daughter got the fish and chips. Everything was absolutely amazing. The fish was very soft and tender. For the sides, I got cauliflower rice with the street corn and my husband got broccoli with corn as well. The service was fantastic. They went out of their way to see if we needed anything and were very friendly. The interior was very modern looking. We will definitely be going back because the food was so good. I would highly recommend everyone to try this place!

Friendly staff, thoughtful service, and a warm atmosphere. Will definitely eat here again!
