Can Jubany

"A standout name in Catalan cuisine, both for its setting in a delightful farmhouse and the talent of chef Nandu Jubany, a man with a passion for motorbikes to the point where he has even taken part in the Dakar rally. The entrance to Can Jubany enables guests to admire the adjoining vegetable garden which provides many of its ingredients as well as the kitchen, where the focus is on a balance between tradition and cutting-edge cuisine. The welcoming interior is a pleasant surprise, featuring several rooms with a rustic-contemporary feel, different spaces for a post-dinner drink, plus a chef’s table right by the kitchen. The focus here is on contemporary cooking with its roots in tradition, with dishes built around the finest Catalan ingredients on the à la carte and two impressive menus (“A stroll around Catalunya” and “The Great Can Jubany Feast”). And make sure you don’t miss the “Festival of Desserts” to go with your coffee!" - Michelin Inspector

The First Day We Got Our Stars: Nandu Jubany

"It’s been nearly two decades since Can Jubany in Barcelona, the brainchild of Nandu Jubany and his wife received its first Michelin star. The Catalonian restaurant is located in a rustic farmhouse from which produce is grown and lifestock is reared." - Azimin Saini

One of the best restaurants in Catalonia. The parking is far from the restaurant, and with a dirt road, which can be a difficulty on a rainy winter night. On the contrary, this allows you to walk in the middle of the restaurant's organic garden. The decoration of the restaurant is dignified and up to its category. The staff is very friendly and professional. The chef, non-existent. He is probably making a lot of money on the other side of the world, but he has abandoned his clients. Fortunately, his wife, acts as Head of Hall with a professionalism worthy of praise. We chose the short tasting menu, with wine pairings. The price of the menu is correct for its category, but the pairing is overpriced, because although the wines are good, they are not the most expensive. The petit fours are very original and elaborate. An experience that you must have at least once in your life.

Yesterday was my third time here. We sat next to the kitchen and the experience was amazing. Albert was our waiter and we couldn't ask for a better night. We enjoyed going to the kitchen with Francesc explaining us a large number of details about their cooking and style. Food was very tasty, lots of different flavors and generous portions. The rice with espardenyes was one of our favorites. It was so insane how tasty it was that 1) we had a second round, 2) we went into the kitchen and Quico cooked one giving us instructions. The high quality of the food and their cooking is at the same level of how nice everyone was with us and the energy they added so that we had a unique time.

We tried the longest tasting menu and we were both massively impressed. The quality of the food it's really high, as well as their will to work with local vegetables and products. Food came in right portions, ina pace expected for a tasting. Explanations were precise and service was impeccable. They do have really great wines that go with the food. Dessert wise, there's plenty so make sure you don't over eat bread which in fact it's amazing. They have a terrace I case you'd like to go outside to have the coffee or infusions - which come in a massive trolley! If combined with a stay in Mas Albareda, you have a perfect weekend!

You will need to wait at least 6 months to dine in on weekends. And, honestly, it is worth the wait! We give them a 5star because we cannot give them a 10 star rating. Food is absolutely brilliant: a true stroll by the Catalan territory. Service is as brilliant as its food: smiley faces everywhere. So much kindness and caring in every little detail. A cozy wink to our waiter Musta, whose middle name should be "nicest person on earth". Next time, we will order order desert festival twice 😋.

One of the best places to experience big part of the Catalan cuisine. To enjoy it with your partner, friends or family. Totally recommended!

Yelp
Can Jubany is about 100 km North of BCN and is Nandu Jubany's vanguard kitchen in search of serious perfection of the farm-to-table concept. We found Can Jubany worthy of the trip from BCN as the cuisine was ingredient-driven, not involving alien flavors just for weirdness sake as has become the gastronomic trend of some gastronomic kitchens. Can Jubany embraces the farm-to-table model and ensures the high quality of his raw materials by actually growing most them in the small garden and farm that is across the parking lot from the restaurant. These raw materials, fresh from his actual farm next door, are then refined to an extraordinary level while maintaining their recognizable flavor in his glass enclosed kitchen. During our tour of the small farm, asparagus, tomatoes, beets, peas, herbs and calçots were in season and the chicken and other fowl were providing both eggs and meat for the various dishes. Can Jubany might best be described as a down-to-earthy masia-restaurant where locals gather together to enjoy excellent Catalan food on weekends together. There is also an outdoor patio were dinners gather post-dinning to enjoy more libations and a cigar or two. For us, our food entertainment was lunch that took place over a 4 hour period and was titled "A Stroll Around Catalunya" and included: Pork's tribute - Jubany sausage, cracking cheek port, andpork belly foam in an edible rice cone Vegetable garden - included red beet, blue cheese and prune Pumpkin gnocchi - parmesan cheese serum and Iberian ham Puffed pastry with foie gras, caramelized figs and a little salad Codfish "brandada" cannelloni, onions and honey Sautéed ceps mushrooms with pork belly and egg yoke Sea cucumber rice with langoustines broth Hake cooked iat slow temperature with pickled vegetables Roasted young lamb with potatoes puree, vegetables and mushrooms Desserts included - seasonal vegetables dessert; dessert of citrus fruits and textures; The wine pairings were also well selected/matched to complement the tastes of each course(s), and included: Carles Andreu Trepat Rose (D.O. Cava); Sameiras 1040 (D.O Ribeiro); Venus La Universal (D.O. Montsant); Rasim vi pansit blanc (D.O. Costers del Segre) ; and Mas Llunes Garnatxa Solera (D.O. Emporda). The Mas Llunes and Rasim were clearly some of the best wine we have ever tasted. Not surprising as the Mas Llunes was awarded the Great Golden VINAR 2013 of all 700+ competing wines from Catalonia. Our only observation regarding the sommelier was that they were very knowledgeable but were always asking 'what kind of wine would you like to have with the next course". So overall, as we have noted in another of our gastronomic adventures, Can Jubany is currently a Michelin 1* restaurant that in our exploration was producing Michelin 2* cuisine. Clearly you know when you have had a fantastic gastronomic experience when you can remember the highlights (many of them) months later. Now, if we could only figure out how to get from Barcelona to Can Jubany easily vs an expensive cab ride each way or stay in a hotel near by for the evening.
