Eating Off Duty with Chef Joan Roca

"I just ate an oxtail stew at mother's restaurant, Can Roca, that was exquisite. It is a comfortable, traditional, home-style restaurant and also the place where me and my brothers grew up among the scents of her cuisine and my parents' daily customers." - Marisel Salazar

We are completely confused. This restaurant is well-reviewed and the owner has published two cookbooks, so our group of 4 were all shocked to be served what could most accurately be described as hospital food. The starter salad was not fresh and not seasoned. The vegetable of the day was overcooked boiled potatoes and green beans with no seasoning. The soup of the day was as thick as glue, and again, under-seasoned. The fresh hake was deep fried and overcooked. The "steak" was a cheap cut, maybe 3mm thin, and looked like something that would be served at a prison. We sat at the restaurant looking at online photos from positive reviews, wondering if we had shown up on the chef's day off. We do not speak Catalan, but when our waitress came to clear our plates, and saw that we hadn't eaten some items, she made it clear that she understood why. We had a dozen items. The pork cheek was decent. The ice cream was fine. The crema was fine. Nothing else. This was easily the worst meal we had in a MONTH in Catalonia.

Highly recommend! We came for lunch and got a 3 course meal + wine for 17 euro. Food was delicious. The staff were very friendly and let us store our bikes in the courtyard while we ate.

It's the Roca Family doing traditional cheap and tasty Catalan classics in trad environment. In short we had 4 plates of food each of the card and 500ml of wine for 18euros each. The food was tasty and very generous portion size. Well worth a visit.

Google
A bit far to go if you're based in Girona, but the set menu is good value at 17 euros/person. Service is a bit slow and they don't want to speak to you in English so some understanding/grasp of Spanish is needed. Book ahead if you want to sit indoors

Incredible! Who ever gave this place anything other the a 100% review is a fool. This place is home some of the best local food around, served with elegance, and class. 16 euros Wine Great french style bread Small salad or starter (two choices) Firsts (4 amazing choices) Seconds (5 amazing choices, best pork of my life, nearly butter) Desert (the baked apple was insane) Coffee available for 1-2 euros

Yelp
We came here at the recommendation of a local and I have a feeling that it will be hard to find another restaurant during our trip to Spain that beats this place and both value and taste. We were told that the sons of the owners of this restaurant own the 3 Michelin star restaurant just down the street. It's no wonder their kids have cooking chops because the food at Can Roca is as good as home made gourmet food gets. For two people with drinks, our 3 course meal (not counting a poached egg complementary starter) came out to less than 30 euros! We came at the end of the lunch crowd, around 4pm, when they were closing their lunch hours and reopening later for dinner. Despite the odd hour, the restaurant was completely packed but we didn't have to wait long to get a table. The whole place was locals only. Their menu is small and we were told they were already out of quite a few items. We basically told our server to give us whatever they had still available and whatever else she recommended. I can't tell you the names of the dishes but everything was just spectacular. We had these potato croquettes that were so divine, a bit salty from the meat mixed in, but super creamy. Even the potato and peas dish turned out to be really good- simple but satisfying. For the main dishes, we got the ribs with roasted chestnuts, and a stewed beef with mushrooms. The meats were so tender. And then for dessert we got some type of chocolate mousse with cookie crumbles and a coconut cream mousse with pineapple bits. This is the stuff you can expect to get at a fancy restaurant, definitely not at a mom and pop shop. Needless to say, we left very full and will definitely be back next time we are here.

Yelp
The three brothers started here under their parents' watchful eye! Walked in and were promptly seated community style with a local Catalonian. My partner asked what he was having while I started us with what I thought was just two glasses of cava, not the whole bottle--a 2011 reserve of the house! So, I gave him a glass! He told us some of his favorite places to visit and in just a moment, the food arrived. The starter was the most wonderful pickled asparagus, cauliflower, three green olives and green lettuce which we dressed ourselves with balsamic vinegar and oil plus some pepper. Great bread with two heels. Next, we both had Catalon cannelloni (with turkey inside or it can be made with chicken liver, lamb brains and pork or veal, but I say turkey) with a bechamel sauce to start and then Nance got the flavorful quail and I had the fish with several small bones. The desert for me was Catalonian crema, of course; she got the baked apple. Our cooking instructor bwck in BCN said to expect 10€ but what about that whole bottle? Yes, it was 11€ per person plus 6,50€ for the bottle! Best meal yet!

Yelp
Excellent local food. Comes with a salad, first course, main course and dessert. All this for 11 euro. Very friendly service. Great value for money.
