Where To Eat And Drink In Jamaica Plain

"The fact that Canary Square is one of the only places in Boston where you can reliably find multiple varieties of Trillium on tap (other than the brewery, of course) is reason enough to come here. But if that’s not enough, it’s also the type of all-around solid restaurant that works when you just can’t figure out where to go. Its big space and gastropub-type menu makes it ideal for groups, and the patio overlooking Hyde Square is great when the weather’s nice." - dan secatore

Where To Have A Group Dinner

"If the weather’s nice, definitely sit on the shaded patio out front of this comfort food spot in Jamaica Plain. If it isn’t, there’s still plenty of room for your group inside, along with the added bonus of being closer to the kitchen so that you and your friends can be treated to mac and cheese aromatherapy. The big bar along the side of the dining room also has a great collection of craft beer taps, so get after that, too." - dan secatore

The food was great and delivered pretty quickly to our table. They seemed to have a good variety of drinks and cocktails. Would love to try one next time.

We were served by a delightful bartender named Smyth who took excellent care of us. The food was surprisingly good, tho it did take a little too long to get out of the kitchen; it wasn't even crowded.

Casual upscale bar and restaurant with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. Really warm service, we took a high top by the bar, had couple outstanding cocktails, the pineapple daiquiri is worth going back for! The charcuterie board was good but the pork bun that I got was simply out of this world. My husband liked his steak frites and my house made fettuccine with peas and parmesan was decent but a little dry. Would definitely go back.

Great atmosphere. Great beer selection. Came here with a group of friends and was excited to see salmon poke on the menu, which did not disappoint.

Great open place with excellent service and fresh food. The bread and butter is amazing and the chicken dinner dish is a winner. Also great for breakfast or beers for a game.

In a word, sublime. My wife and I lived in JP for several years and without a doubt went to Canary Square more than any other restaurant in the entire city. While some might think that's limiting, I'd counter with "when you know, you know." We lived just down the street so it was of course convenient, but in reality it was so much more: the draft list alone would be worth 5 stars. The food was always incredible, however "small" might think the menu was. (It was also one of the few places that, thankfully, consistently served a black bean burger.) I, personally, didn't think it was any different than most smaller restaurants in the neighborhood or even the whole of the city. The staff were always pleasant in my view, and we always *always* got sat quickly even on busy Friday/Saturday nights, simply because they eventually came to recognize us. Now we live in Pennsylvania but whenever we visit Boston we plan it so that we can leave early enough to get to CS before they close and have dinner. Don't miss out!

I've been here two times in the last month. It was okay. The menu is quite limited right now. I understand it is covid recovery times, but service on food and beverages was very slow. Our mains came before our appetizers and some people ended up waiting for their meals while the rest of us ate. However, they have a nice selection of beverages and their appetizers were tasty.

Pros: Nice outside seating Cons: mediocre food, disorganized staff, questionable morals There's nothing really I can say about the food besides "meh". The prices aren't bad, but the food is just so average. And the staff really need to be more attentive in what they are doing. We were seated outside, which was really nice. But our table had no napkins or utensils. The waiter came proceeded to ask for our drink orders, which we did not want any. About 1 minute after we were seated, the waiter came back and asked for our food order. We had to ask the waiter to give us more time. Once we ordered the food, our waiter never came back. Our food came out and we had no silverware to eat with or water to drink. We had to flag down a "runner", whose job is to bring out food, and not to check up on us. At the end of our meal, I had to find our waiter for the payment. I handed him a $100 for a $60 tab. As I went back to my seat, I could see who must have been a manager, intercept him and deny him of cashing out the $100. The waiter came back to me and claimed that they didn't have enough change...as in they didn't have $40. Either they simply did not want to take a $100 bill or judged based on my physical appearance, which I doubt was due to my clothes as I was in business casual attire. No loss on my part here, since the food is just not good.
