Yelp
Cancun is a restaurant in downtown Midland. This is apparently what locals like judging by the reviews. I'm not gonna trash this town or anything, but, this restaurant would not be in business very long in a larger city like Houston , San Antonio or Dallas. The salsa was good , chips were very thick and bordered on stale. we ordered corn chile con queso, allegedly fried corn with a spicy cheesey sauce. Nope. It was like cream corn in a watery slightly chesse flavored liquid. If it had any flavor it might have been good. No salt, No Flavor whatsoever. The only flavor was corn. On our way to Odessa , we stopped for lunch in Uvalde. I ordered the bacon cream corn at an airport cafe. It was almost the same as this stuff, except it tasted great , had bacon, and loads of flavor. These guys should take note. My wife took some of the corn queso water and mixed it with the salsa, which wasn't great, but did make it edible. For dinner, we ordered enchiladas, I got the steak and my wife got the shredded chicken. Its supposed to be covered in jalapeño cream sauce. Here we go again. Cream gravy minus jalapeños. It just sat there on our enchiladas, taunting us. I did have a single, paper thin slice of jalapeno garnish on top of my enchiladas, does that make it jalapeno cream sauce? i guess the enchilada was ok, honestly , the steak was pre-cooked and dried out. Taco Cabaña could have done as well. On top of that, the prices here are on the high side. Most items on the menu range from $23.00 to $35.00. That's way more than most mexican restaurants we go to. Typically in Houston, Austin, SanAntonio , you expect to spend 15-20 dollars for a plate of Tex-Mex fare. These guys act as though they are fine dining, they have a million " Managers" running around. I wonder what in the world they are all doing? Certainly not checking the food quality, or ensuring a great guest experience.
They never stopped by to ask if we were enjoying our food. Our waitress was effective, but acted as though she is serving hand grenades in hell. She looked very unhappy and acted the same. This place has a dress code, I applaud that, it's unusual these days. But, Please, Please, stop serving tasteless food at premium prices. I cannot imagine a scenario where I would ever come back to this restaurant. In a boom and bust town like Midland, one would think the ownership would treat the customer like gold. Our experience would make us feel more like rusty tin. Maybe this is what locals expect in a good Mexican restaurant, if so, I don't want to know what the competition is
cooking. I originally give them 3 stars, because it was a one-off, but the experience really was about 1.5-2. I just don't feel good trashing a family restaurant. The refried beans were the best thing on my plate as you will see in the photo. I edited my review lower because the more I thought about it , I realized how sub standard the whole experience was. In Southeast Texas , we have a place called Taqueria Arandas. It's a chain, but, the food there on a bad night would run circles around Cancun Grill. For less than half the price.
