"For the past 14 years on a lively stretch of Upper Market Street, chef and owner Mat Schuster has made Canela into a Castro staple. The vibrant dining space shines with gussied-up tapas like briny boquerones in vinegar and olive oil with citrus, perfectly charred and medium rare lamb pintxos, and a classic Spanish tortilla. There’s now a full bar with cocktails focused on Spanish spirits like BCN gin from Barcelona and Basque Aatxa vermouth. Light, airy, and crispy churros with chocolate sauce are a must for dessert, plus gluten-free and vegan options abound across the menu." - Adrian Spinelli
"For $149, you can get a Thanksgiving meal from Canela that serves four and includes turkey, brussels sprouts, cornbread stuffing, and more. The Spanish restaurant in the Castro is taking orders here until November 18th for pick-up on the 24th." - julia chen 1
"Canela’s online Thanksgiving butcher shop has half-cooked turkeys, ready-to-heat ham, and rolled, stuffed turkey breast. For dessert, they’ve got a bourbon chocolate chip pecan and walnut cranberry pie. Pick-up and delivery starts on Nov. 15th, but they ask that you place an order three days in advance." - julia chen 1
"One high-concept project after another has flamed out in the Castro over the past decade, but Mat Schuster’s tapas restaurant remains a notable exception. Canela Bistro and Wine Bar continues to thrive, owing as much to its pintxos and Spanish cheese selection as to its expansive wine list filled with albariños, garnachas, and lesser-known varietals from the Basque Country. Perhaps the only SF restaurant to embrace outdoor dining by selling patrons warm socks and blankets, Canela’s menu specials are also worth keeping on your radar at Halloween, Passover, Cinco de Mayo, and pretty much all holidays, along with prix fixes tied to SF Gay Men’s Chorus shows and musical-theater openings. The Castro may always be more of an entertainment district than a hotbed of fine dining, but Canela threads that needle well." - peter astrid kane
"If you’re looking for something relatively more chill, but still decidedly Halloween-themed, Canela is offering a six-course dinner, with items such as Monsters of the Deep, a calamari in ink sauce dish, and steampunk chicken wings. The special dinner runs from Friday, October 27 through Tuesday, October 31, though the restaurant is closed on Mondays. The event costs $66.6 per person, plus tax and gratuity — we see what you did there — and reservations can be made via OpenTable." - Dianne de Guzman
