Canterbury Cathedral Lodge

"How did it strike you on arrival?Welcoming. The hotel is built on the Cathedral grounds and you can see the magnificent building from most rooms, which give the place a historic feel. Though of course it's far from historic and obviously contemporary, despite being built from local stone and timber to reflect its neighbour. Nice. What’s the crowd like? There was a company conference going on when I was here, and apparently a wedding scheduled for the following day - it hosts many of both. But there were plenty of happy tourists here eager to stay near Canterbury's main attraction as a badge of honour – you get access to the Cathedral included in the price of the room. The good stuff: Tell us about your room. The views of the Cathedral and the sound of the bells are the most memorable things about the room. But there is enough space to feel comfortable in the rooms, which are elegant and restrained. The furnishings are all pale wood, the colours sage greens and blues. Plus, seats in the bay windows are a nice touch. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?King size bed, King size sleep. Lots of pillows and non-scratchy sheets. How about the little things, like mini bar, or shower goodies. Any of that find its way into your suitcase? There's generous tea and coffee provided in-room and water, nothing I'd rave about to a friend though. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down. The shower is strong and the water hot. Toiletries are plentiful and towels big enough to fully wrap yourself up in. Best of all the toilet seat wasn't cold to sit on, even in winter. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Free Wi-Fi, strong enough. Staff: If you could award one a trophy, who gets it, and why?Considering the Lodge is owned by the Cathedral, the staff are as professional, friendly and eager to help. They all deserve a pat on the back. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The breakfast is fantastic. Think the usual spread of pastries, juices, fruits, cereals and yogurts plus full English breakfasts featuring fat Kentish sausages, black pudding and yummy eggs and kippers. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay?Waking up to the sound of the epic Cathedral bells. That and the breakfasts. Bottom line: worth it, and why?Worth the money by a country mile and the best hotel to stay in Canterbury." - Ramsay Short

Canterbury Cathedral Lodge | Best places to stay in Canterbury

"If you’re coming to Canterbury for the Cathedral, there’s surely no better place to stay. Built in the grounds of the city’s world-famous cathedral, this sleek hotel has bedrooms that look straight onto the imposing facades.  Rooms feel a touch corporate, but the garden is a joy, as is the Refectory Terrace, where hearty breakfasts and optional evening meals are taken.  This isn’t the place to stay if you’re looking for buzz – many guests staying have business at the cathedral, but for a few days of quiet contemplation, it’s perfect.  " - Annabelle Thorpe

Outstanding stay at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge. Warm welcome from friendly staff, from the parking porter to the check in to the restaurant staff. Location of the hotel couldn’t be better, magical to be able to stay in the grounds of the cathedral. The rooms were spotlessly clean with everything you could want for your stay. Price of stay includes entry into the cathedral which makes it even better value. We paid £5 each for a small group tour which was excellent, Dr Chris Sell provided so much information that we otherwise would have missed. Recommended. |There are many restaurants and bars within walking distance. The hotel serves sandwiches and cakes which you can enjoy in the beautiful gardens. Breakfast was superb- quality ingredients, well presented, professional and friendly service. Couldn’t fault it. |Can’t wait to return

Wonderful hotel! ||Really special to be on the grounds of the Cathedral. ||Comfortable, quiet and clean. Our room looked out on the beautiful interior garden. Friendly, helpful and professional staff. ||Delicious breakfast served in the lovely dining room with white linen tablecloths and pretty view. ||Fellow hotel guests were cordial and respectful - which, unfortunately, is not always the case. |(One note – do not think it would be best for young children) ||Would love to return for a longer stay.

The Lodge is set within the precincts of Canterbury Cathedral. A perfect position for us as we were attending a funeral during our two night stay.||Plus side, ideally placed for the Cathedral and the centre of Canterbury. A door pass was given to us both for unlimited free access to the grounds long after the closing times for the general public.|A good varied breakfast was served. Free wifi was available which was important for our two night stay. The staff were all very friendly.||Negative side. The interior of the lodge was in parts scruffy, the hall carpets throughout were stained in places and would benefit from either replacing or cleaning.|The room was small, and basic. Hanging space within the open wardrobe was hindered by the security box. The washroom was small, the shower unit cramped. Anyone who is large in stature would find the shower incompatible. The toiletries were very disappointing. The shower cubicle had a small dispenser of something, which when used, a drop no larger than my small fingernail was dispensed, impossible to use as an effective shower body/ hair wash gel.The same for the dispenser by the wash basin. We had to ask for toiletries at the reception which were supplied. Two small plastic bottles of body wash which were usable.|Upon our check in we were asked if we would like our room serviced the following morning, which we agreed was a good idea.|Upon our return to the room late next morning prior to changing for the funeral, the room had not been serviced.|We had to ask reception to service our room.||Overall, we thought the Lodge to be basic, we classed our stay as a four star Travelodge. At £200 per room we thought excessive.|Tips: supply your own toiletries and drinking water for the fridge.

The Canterbury Cathedral Lodge is my favorite place to stay in England! It is an excellent value with clean, comfortable rooms. Breakfast is outstanding. Not only are there a variety of delicious foods on the menu, but the dining room service is courteous and efficient. Staying right on the cathedral grounds is a treat, and cathedral admission is included in the price of your stay at the lodge.|During my most recent visit (June 2025), I was traveling with family and my brother experienced a medical situation during our stay. The Cathedral Lodge staff were extremely understanding and helpful to us. We were very grateful to them.|I highly recommend staying here if you are planning a visit to Canterbury!

We had a fabulous stay for my son's wedding. A percect location right in the centre of all the sights..Although the stairs were tiring as we were on the top floor the service and breakfast was amazing. We walked everywhere as it was so centrally located, and the cathedral was stunning, parked in the beautiful grounds. Many thanks for our beautiful stay!

We have stayed before in the main building which was fine. This time our room was in the Burgate building and it was disappointing. A small double bed, although a comfortable mattress the pillows were very poor. The room itself was good size but the bathroom needed some better organisation. Only a bath as ceilings were low. Some amenities in the room which were OK for tea, coffee etc. No safe but a decent size wardrobe and hangers. No bedside table on one side, so had to use the floor. You need to book a time slot for breakfast but that was OK and food was good although the decaf coffee was completely tasteless as it was so weak. Service was friendly and efficient.

Second time staying here. A peaceful oasis and special place. Small but comfortable room with requested Cathedral view. Staff welcoming & friendly. Quality ‘a la carte’ breakfast. Will be back and next time will try and get up in time for 730am service.

If location is the only consideration, than this hotel is for you as it located across from the Cathedral and staying there give you unlimited access to the grounds (even when it is closed to the public). However, the room is extremely small (the bed is even smaller.. a small double), the closet could barely hold any hanging clothes because of the location of the safe. As for the bathroom, it was very basic, the shower was very small. It had a dispenser of some soap (I assume but it didn't smell great) and there were toiletries only provided when asked (I didn't, so I can't comment). Breakfast was nice (although you have to provide the time at which you want to eat which is not always convenient). There is also no AC, windows only open a crack (not fully) and lastly there are no outlets by the bed which is impractical. All and all, I would not stay here again as the location does not outweigh the other inconveniences.

Yelp
Really enjoyed our stay here. Lodging was quiet, beds comfortable, fans in all rooms (it was hot when we were there, easy access to railroad, inside Cathedral grounds.

Yelp
Really nice and quiet hotel within the Cathedral grounds. An absolutely privileged situation with private parking and seminar facilities. The hotel is of modern construction and the comfortable rooms all have on suit shower rooms, tv's, tea, hair dryer, iron and ironing board. All rooms apparently have a view of the Cathedral. The hotel does not serve dinner. Breakfast has been ok: service a bit slow if you order "English Breakfast", quantities of tea and coffee have been the best I have ever seen in a hotel. Service is friendly and courteous, both at breakfast and at the reception. Recommended!
