Canton House Review - Buford Highway - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"Canton House on Buford Highway provides the full dim sum experience with unique offerings like dessert carts with mango pudding and the only bubble tea cart we know of in the city. The salt and pepper squid is our favorite item here, but it’s not always on rotation. Just make sure you catch a cart that has our other favorites like sponge cakes, pan-fried shrimp, chive buns, and steamed rice rolls filled with shrimp or beef. We always like to get the pan-fried noodles with beef from their regular menu since it’s the tasty, filling finale we need to keep us from cleaning them out of chive buns. And w e've made it our personal goal to come as part of a wedding gathering, so we can dine in their beautiful chandelier-lit private space. " - Candy Hom

I entered the previously mentioned establishment upon high hopes. I had wishes for delicious food, and a large amount of hunger looming over me, to make a long story short my wishes were not even close to redeemed. We entered and the service was delightful, kind warm eyes, but then we were thrown away. We were ignored and left in the dust. We had to sit there, just sad and alone. The worst part was the food itself. To sum things up, that was the worst restaurant I have ever tasted. Please, I’m begging you, I need you to hear my pleas. Never visit this place, EVER. I mean no disrespect to the owners, I’m sure they are trying, but I really regret my visit and I might never eat again after this. I remember the moment I was grabbing some beef from the buffet, thinking “The smell is probably deceiving, it could smell bad and still taste good.” I was WRONG. It was NOT GOOD. I left a photo of my plate as it was finished, mind you this was the first time in my life I couldn’t even finish a single plate at a buffet. So again. Please don’t go. I’m really warning you. Also we paid $30 for 2 people, what a joke!

We were hoping to find a diamond in the rough but not so. From the outside you think maybe and asyou walk in still maybe or a bit less. It is cleaner than you would think. The wait staff was friendly but there is minimal service being a buffet right. The food was hot but at the best looked like an old days public school version of Chinese. The lettuce at the salad bar had red on it. The toppings were mixed and limited. The dressing was thick and jelly like. The meat was cut small and the ones that had breading looked like off brand walmart special. Sushi was placed with desserts. Not even the sweet and sour sauce was on par. Most food was bland, over cooked and tasteless. My foodie family couldn't even finish half of a plate and did not even attempt dessert. Sad! Then we went to pay thinking the price must reflect what we ate but AGAIN NOT SO. For 3 people we paid $60+! Do not waist your $ . I am so sorry and do not mean to hurt feelings but they need help for sure.

Google
Ate here around 2pm, this place has decent food on there buffet, love there low main, and crab ragoon. Some reviews don't make since and don't say what time they went. I mainly go around noon to 2pm,when the food is fresh. So go during there peak hour is best for quality.

Google
Food is still good, but the service has declined. The waitress did not even bring us our bill. Plus, the dinner buffet now costs more than $16.00 with only water to drink. Will have to find somewhere cheaper to eat.

Google
Had take out. Service was great and fast. Food, just ok. Sesame chicken had great flavor, but each and every bite was stringy 😬 and hard to chew. Lo mein noodles were ok. Egg roll was good as long as I added some flavor such as soy sauce or hot mustard. I’m a little disappointed.

Google
This place is great, food is always hot and fresh, staff are very polite and overall we had a great experience. The price was also excellent, perfect for a young family like ours.

We have come there for Thanksgiving for the past three years. Have enjoyed it every time. Great food and service.

Google
The most awesome family owns this restaurant and we love when we can come have lunch or dinner. Recently #Decrocks got together to have a Christmas Rock party here, everyone had an amazing time... friends have become like family to each of us! Canton House has both great food and service, the owner pops by to say hello and personally invites us to come back often. We love that they remember us and are never anything less than amazing!

Yelp
I'm not a Chinese food guy; my wife loves it though (and she is half Chinese) so I asked for her input on this review. Her Mom managed Chinese food restaurants when she was growing up and its her favorite food; she's got opinions! Verdict: Not good. Green beans were super overcooked as was a lot of the meat. The sushi (California and veggies rolls only) were not great, you could tell they'd been sitting out for a while because the rice had started to turn crunchy. It was prime time busy hour (Sunday at noon) so this was a unfortunate. Need to improve desert selection - no ice cream. My biggest complaint was with drinks: wife asked for a Diet Coke and I asked if they had Coke Zero and was told that they did. They did not have any because they serve Pepsi product and we got brought out Diet enough. Staff was nice enough. Restrooms and cleanliness were fine. Won't be going back, will try other places.

Yelp
Love the pork fried rice with extra pork ;) The Five Satay appetizer is also another favorite! First tried it from the buffet and have ordered a full appetizer since. Very tender and flavorful.

Yelp
ordered beef fried rice with egg. these crazy people gave fried rice with every possible ingredient other than beef and egg (shrimp, sausage, etc), dumped beef on top, and then slapped some fried eggs on the top of all of it. i dunno what went through their minds when they were making it, but it's clear they couldn't care less what the actual order was

Yelp
Lovely Chinese food with a large selection of food. They have sushi too which is great and crawfish. I usually get the buffet but the few times I got take out it was very good. The staff is very nice too which is a bonus.

Yelp
The place needs more patronage. Food is OK but can be stale. Great ice cream and dessert, selections and other hard to find stuff you couldn't find at Chow King. Hit and miss and when you can get shrimp here deep-fried and breaded. Eggrolls are 50-50.

Yelp
This is by far one of the best places to eat in Decatur. The owners are gracious, and the food is great!! We have now dined there several times, making he 30 min dive to eat there just because of the experience and food! Keep up the great work!!! Hard to own a restaurant, and a restaurant that has great food and atmosphere.

Yelp
I went there for lunch today. What a mistake that was! We decided to order off the menu rather than the buffet. I ordered Moo Shu pork and an egg roll. My friend ordered Mongolian Beef. First let me say that our meals didn't come out at the same time. Mine came out 10 minutes after his did. His food tasted like what a dirty fridge smells like. The pork dish that I ordered was scorching hot and very cold. Obviously microwaved and not stirred when it came out. The "crispy" egg roll was not only soggy, but it was cold. Needless to say, we left without finishing our meals. Since lunch was on me, he went to get our car, while I went to pay the check. I looked closely at the bill to figure out what the tip should be. That's when I noticed that the food prices were much higher than the menu indicated. I pointed this out to the cashier and she didn't correct the bill. Our lunch was $7.00 more than I expected it to be. So for $35.00 we got inedible food and poor customer service. If you want Chinese food, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!

Yelp
We went here for the Sizzling rice soup. It is my favorite and it's so hard to find these days. While there, we looked at the buffet and it looked fantastic. We got the soup for 2 which was absolutely fresh and amazing! The chef brought it out himself and was a pleasure to speak with. Highly recommend this place especially for the Sizzling Rice Soup

Yelp
I'm a frequent customer. It's so easy to go after church on Sunday and just get all you want. The food is always good. Sometimes I order off the menu during the week for lunch. The lemon chicken is superb. However, the lunch items don't come with an egg roll anymore. It's also too expensive to go and get a buffet go-plate. Its weighed instead of just the regular amount and they have the price set too high for my taste. The staff has always been very friendly and the owners recognize me when I come in and always have a friendly greeting. I will definitely go again. Hmm, lunch today perhaps?

Yelp
Since Nicole B. has written a very good review on this buffet, I'm not going to try to iterate her article. But I will add a little information since I DO eat seafood. They had steamed/stuffed mussels in their shell which perhaps had been sitting in their hot tray a little too long, making them somewhat tough. Their shrimp in an Asian sauce were fresh tasting as were their peel and eat shrimp. A hidden gem over on their salad bar was Kim Chee, fermented, spicy cabbage that Koreans eat like a side dish. Deserts were all good, from the fudge/walnit pieces to the cocnut macaroons to the petite, triple tiered chocolate squares. All were fresh and not hard or chewy. The waiter was always available to take our used dishes away and refill our drinks. Quite nice to come and fill up!

Yelp
Well, I've been abiding in Alabama for about four months now, and I have been looking for some good Chinese food, to no avail. I finally got desperate; I texted my cousin, who has more dietary restrictions than a Facebook forum of Anti-vaxxors. Upon her questionably dependable recommendation, I came here. While not the best place I've ever been to, it is definitely a oasis in the wasteland known as the ethnic food culture of northern Alabama. Have you ever drove through Illinois and you see the "Now leaving Illinois" sign, and automatically get this feeling of relief as your tension leaves your body; you pull over at the first rest stop you come to, and unpack your civil rights and common sense that you had to put away upon entering the cesspool of Illinois, because believing in and utilizing certain unalienable rights will get you locked up under the jail in that barbaric state. Anyways, not to take you off track. But if I were to compare Chinese buffets to states, then all the other ones in Alabama that I have purveyed, they were Illinois, California and New York, dismal, dystopian horrendous experiences. While Canton House is like Louisiana during Mardi Gras, purty great food, good environment, and smells slightly funky. But honestly a great time. Even though it will never be as good a Texas. I guess what I'm getting at is; this is a solid buffet that I will definitely return to.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday night with my son. All the food was hot, most of it was fresh. I say most because the cheesesticks, egg rolls, spring rolls and some of the fried foods my son enjoys did not seem very fresh. I loved many of the dishes I tried on the buffet. I really liked the shrimp with zucchini and squash, as well as the hunan pork (or whatever it was called.) They also had some tasty sirloin strips and steak dishes. My usual go-to dishes (sesame chicken and general tso's) were alright, but I have other places I prefer for those. I'll be back...

Yelp
I've since been back to the restaurant a few more times. I'm disappointed in one very big thing. They don't change up what they offer on the buffet. It's the same thing over and over, night after night, week after week. I can't deal with that. Also, when it's the slightest bit chilly outside they jack up the heat so high I get flushed and am hot all night after I have left the restaurant. Star Buffet has their heat up really high as well. Too high for our family's tastes.

Yelp
Needs more variety! The food all has similar appearance! Seafood needs variety and fresh ingredients! Staff is excellent and exceptionally friendly! Very family oriented! Very welcoming!

Yelp
Family atmosphere. Service was top notch and personal. Warm and friendly staff. Food was fresh and warm. $50 fed my family of 6. Will go back.

Yelp
One can eat very healthy off of the buffet at lunch. The grilled chicken breast, green beans, and broccoli make for a great meal. Control yourself and walk past the egg rolls, drink non sweet tea, and when you go to the dessert bar eat watermelon or an orange. Lean protein and vegetables with watermelon is hard to beat. My favorite not so healthy but delicious item is the Lo Mein. Order Beef Lo Mein off of the menu for great meal.

Shannon J.

Yelp
Best buffet in Decatur. The price is good, and the service is usually very fast. Its best point is that it is very consistent in quality. Free wifi! Cons: They rarely change items. You will always see the same items. I understand that to many in Decatur, this will be seen as a positive. TVs are always set to news channels and I really don't want to watch politics over lunch or see controversial topics, like rape or racism, during a family meal.

Yelp
Primarily a buffet restaurant, but they will also let you order from the menu. I call for takeout lunch 2 or 3 times a month, and find it tasty, a good bargain, and of course fresh, since it was made to order. Keeps me coming back.

Yelp
Service is terrible. No booths to seat, chairs old and hard. Owners not friendly at all. Same old food.

Cd G.

Yelp
Awful. The food was way overcooked and was not fresh. We got there at 11:30 for lunch and were nearly the only people there. All the dishes appeared to have been sitting around for several hours. The dessert was stale. Nothing was hot. The sesame chicken and general zhos chicken were nearly the same thing. It appears that either they don't know what they are doing or they just don't care.

Brandon P.

Yelp
Very good atmosphere. Great variety of food. Best Chinese restaurant in decatur with draft beer.

Sarah N.

Yelp
5pm on a Saturday and most of what we got off the buffet was not even warm, much less hot. Order off the menu if you decide to try it.

Yelp
It had been quite awhile since I ate at this restaurant, my new hubby & I had eaten out so much we totally burned out on just about every restaurant & fast food joint in town & we were doing the quiz thingy with each other, U prolly know how it goes, HE ASK? where would U like to eat, ME, I don't know, what would U like, HIM, not sure, ummmm, ME, well come on now, Your turn to choose, HIM- uh, I have no idea, surely U know of something you feel like eating! ME, thinking, uhmm, he has no idea what he want's to eat, after going through the whole restaurant menu in my head, I said, well, I know U really don't care much for oriental food, I told him about Canton house, he said might as well, so we headed to 14th & parked at Canton house! Food was nothing like I remember, we both went through about 5 plates each, I tried everything on their buffet, he tried everything but sushi, couldn't get him to eat sushi thru an IV! Lol! We paid the ticket & we both walked out of Canton House as hungry as we went in! What gives Canton house, did U lose ur cook? If so, Go get back please! Food was so very sorry I almost got sick just smelling that buffet!

Daniel S.

Yelp
Most of the time, food is not always fresh, you can tell some of it has been sitting for hours.the only way they bring out fresh is if it's out or u tell them.not to mention if you just get a to go plate, they give you a very small Styrofoam container and expect you to pay more than what a regular buffet costs. No thank you. They don't care about their customers especially repeat ones.

Christa S.

Yelp
Ate lunch here on Monday, was reminded that they are the best buffet in Decatur. We had been going to the new buffet but Canton House is so much better. They have fewer choices but they taste much better. Staff is always friendly too!

Cari K.

Yelp
Our favorite local Chinese Buffet. My only complaint is that there are often unsupervised children running around the restaurant - not only does it get loud, but it's slightly irritating trying to balance a plate full of food and avoid tripping over little kids.

Heather S.

Yelp
We just tried Canton House after reading the reviews and were very disappointed. We paid dinner prices but the food was left over since lunch, not fresh at all. Another negative was the fact there was young children running and playing (one without shoes on). I understand every now and then but obviously it's an all the time thing. The restrooms were all locked and were not open to patroons.
