Feast on Juicy Steaks at These Detroit Restaurants

"This east side institution offers a casual setting for enjoying a swimming pool-sized margarita and a steak. The beef is sold by-the-ounce and cooked to the customer’s specifications. Well-done is an option though Caper’s offers a winking disclaimer that states it cannot guarantee any steak cooked more than medium-well. As far as styles, the restaurant offers four cuts of steak: Delmonico (ribeye), New York strip, T-bone, and filet." - Serena Maria Daniels

Our first date was here when we started dating 5 years ago and the night we got married (on our 5 year Anniversary April 25th) we HAD to come back🥹We absolutely love it here and will continue to come. We came straight from our ceremony so I was still in my wedding dress and the owner bought us our dinners (delmonico steaks and fries) and drinks! They were so kind! The customer service was amazing like always and the atmosphere is always great♡ This is our spot.

Wow, this place was absolutely a find! Once you go in, the atmosphere is really welcoming and the servers are beyond friendly... we literally heard them singing! The food was beyond delicious and they serve things quickly. The place was clean and not too loud... the perfect spot when you want to have some good food and not spend a whole ton of money.

I'm sad that this place is closing. I used to love this spot on Fridays after work in the late 90s. I have no idea why they're closing. Even tho I'm on the left side of the state. We need a moment of silence for the Texas butter toast & baked potatoes the size of my head. 😂

Google
Hidden gem on the East side, under new ownership but same friendly staff, fast service, chill atmosphere, great food & full bar. Had a perfectly grilled delmonico steak, a huge baked potato, garlic sautéed spinach w/ cherry tomatoes & feta cheese, and fresh garden salad. The owner Robert checked on all the customers and everyone was super friendly. Great vibe!

I'm so amazed, the entire experience was epic. Welcoming staff that treated us like we were family back in town for a celebration, The food portions, quality, and presentation all tier one. I'm hearing it's been this way for DECADES! I have a new Favorite. I live a county over but this all made it worth the trip.

Potato skins is all I ever get from here. They used to be 5 star now they are cut awkwardly and wayyy too thick and undercooked. They are now like an undercooked baked potato cut in 1/2. Not like a crispy potato skin at all like they used to be. My dinner is now ruined, I don't live close by, and they won't answer the phone now. So I guess I have to put my complaint here and take a loss.👎🏼#Disappointed

I was told by the neighbor (auto repair next door) of Capers that they would be reopening soon. Great new upgrades! They said July! Workers are there daily.

Google
Steak. Steak. Steak, and more steak. This place right here........ Is just great. The restaurant is really small, but once you have the food, you won't even notice. The steak is always fairly priced, and just pure amazing. Of all the times I went, I've only had one time the steak wasn't the greatest. The potato skins are like stout boats filled with real bacon and cheese, not that imitation trash. You can order up to 100 ounce steaks, if you can handle it. Can you handle it??? If there's a line, make sure you wait. No big parties though, they can't accommodate, so bring no more than 3 other friends. They'll be happy too!!!

Yelp
So sad that they are seemingly stuck in the renovation from Hell itself. I have loved this east side joint for years. Great food, great service. The decor isnt the attraction here, it's the food and the people. Shout out to the T-bone special and the baked potatoes. I love this place and hope it comes back thriving. The community is without you!!

Yelp
When do we expect opening?? I feel I've been calling for 6+ months with the same "we are closed" message. Visibility would be good for your patrons

Yelp
very good service with experienced servers decent food with great selection and a very nice salad bar private parking in a medium area not far the faint of heart i went there with two guy friends huge drinks very reasonable prices for the amount they serve they have generous portions but you pay by the ounce for your steak for medium quality it reminded me of old school 70s restaurant that was considered high end back then
google avatar

Yelp
I took someone to Capers for their birthday and it was profoundly disappointing experience. First of all the server was really rude and wouldn't even look me in the face. I ordered Delmonico steak, baked potato and a $15 drink that was watered down. My steak was tough and overcooked, even though I asked for it to be cooked medium rare. The baked potato tasted like it had been sitting all day in heating bin. Save your money and grill a steak at home. The food here is awful and the service is really bad too.

Yelp
A Detroit staple! Whether you're getting carry-out or dining in (I've done both) you're sure to get the best steak you've ever tasted.
google avatar

Yelp
Tasty Delmonico with sautéed mushrooms. Broccoli is frozen so it's a hard no. Wish I would've selected a different or another side and very bland. Sat at the bar with friendly staff and good music. Reasonably priced Steak is a must! Eastside Gem.

Yelp
This little joint is a good spot for nice bite comfort food. There are a variety of options on the menu and a steady but increased flow of cutomers. There were groups and individual customers. Our group had two fried catfish meals, two Philly Cheese Steaks, and Turkey Club. The standard sides range from fries, coleslaw to veggies. The portions are better than most places that squeeze to the smallest portions possible. With that being written, we have a new spot to get our catfish on. Skip the coffee though...lol. Also, nice and professional service.

Yelp
Best Steaks in North East Detroit (Eastpointe)... unfortunately many times come cold to your table, but still has an amazing flavor...also they stopped being open at night...so, we bever can go there anymore

Tameeka B.

Yelp
the The service has declined tremendously. I specifically asked for fresh bread & potatoes and it was hard and cold. The food (salmon, veggies & potatoes) was served on a tray instead of a plate. Extremely disappointed. Bring the old owners back. HURRY!
google avatar

Yelp
Great Delmonicos! The flavor never fails for me. I also order ahead and when I arrive for pickup, my order is hot and ready. One time, I did dine in with my bestie. We sat at the bar top and we had a good time. The lighting is not too bright, the drinks were good and strong. Bestie and I had a nice conversation over great food and drinks!

Yelp
I miss this place, I used to go here with my mom all the time. This was her favorite place to get steak and a baked potato. Nice people and nice service. 10/10.

Yelp
Can you say steak by the ounce?! Located on Gratiot just south of 8 Mile Rd., Capers has been a neighborhood favorite for years. The space is kind of small and the tables are packed in tight so you can expect to get pretty cozy with the patrons next to you. The area is complete with a full service bar and a salad bar in the back. There is often a wait and they don't take reservations but the food and the prices make it worth it. In addition to the chicken, seafood and pasta entrees they offer huge baked potatoes that can be loaded up how you please. And they are most known for their Cuts of Delmonico (or rib-eye), New York Strip, T-Bone, and Filet Mignon steak by the ounce. So you can order the cut to match your appetite. On most weekdays certain cuts are on special for a discount. My favorite is Friday when there is a cod fish fry which can also be prepared broiled. Add a few of the a la carte jumbo shrimp and you have a winner of a combo. Service is friendly but sometimes drags a little but I chalked it up to how utterly busy the place is always with every table full. One thing can be said and that is that everyone is usually laughing and enjoying themselves which is the general ambiance of the spot. If you want friendly serve, good prices and yummy food check them out.

Yelp
I order a porterhouse steak with coconut shrimp and mash potatoes and they were delicious!! Would have given 5 stars if my steak was medium rare but it was medium which I know is a challenge for this restaurant. But the flavor was awesome!!

Yelp
I've been going here so long I remember the steak and all you can eat spaghetti dinner was my favorite :-) this place is fantastic always has been and it looks like it always will be!

Yelp
Best steaks in the city! Waitresses are so nice and friendly. Drinks are fixed to perfection

Yelp
Honestly, I used to come here for the Monday T-Bone special. Where else can you get a 27 oz steak from a steakhouse for under $40? Usually it's like 30 something dollars and you'll be all set! The steaks come out just like you asked them to, the sides are always good and super big. If you get a potato, expected to feed two people possibly. The worst part about going is waiting at the door to get seated. But I get that because sometimes you just have to make sure you actually have seats for everybody trying to enjoy the same food. I only say that because it's not really any space to wait and you have to sit there, or stand there, and the doorway. But once you sit down you're great! And don't even give me started on the drinks lol! If you don't watch yourself you may be feeling extra good because of those! But this is a HomeTown favor for me. I wish they had one in the city that I'm at now. For the price, you're definitely winning!

Yelp
The food and drinks were delish..date night with Hubby..win/win..will stop by again..Service was quick and precise..

Yelp
Capers can never do any wrong, as far as I'm concerned! I've never had a bad experience, nor ordered a food item that I've never liked. Now, I have to be honest, I've not a big time steak eater at all. And in the past, I've actually ordered other items, except for a steak. I always order the Fried Cauliflower any time I got to Capers. Also, I've ordered the Baked Potatoes; Loaded, or Just with the shredded cheese and sour cream. I've ordered the Lamb Chops. And even dessert. Well, and drinks. So again, I've always been pleased with the food at Capers. I went last night, as I hadn't been in a few years. Drinks were very good; and strong. I ordered the Peach Martini, as that was their $5.00 special for the day. I also ordered Fried Cauliflower, 10 oz Steak Bites (which were delicious), and a Baked Potato with Shredded Cheddar Cheese. I will continue to dine at Capers, that's just a given!

Yelp
The absolute best meal I had in Detroit!! My friends took me here with the tantalizing suggestion of "we know a great place that serves steak by the oz" and I was not disappointed. Not only is Capers a legit and unpretentious steakhouse, with a super sweet and accommodating staff plus a great little bird cartoon logo that feels as out of time as its decor, but its prices are outrageously affordable! I ordered a 10oz Delmonico steak (which is on special on Sundays) and let me tell you: this thing was huge and cooked absolutely perfectly medium-rare. It was DELICIOUS. I can't even tell you how good this steak was. It also cost me a mere $9, which is insane in comparison to the high quality and excellent taste of this excellent steak that was wider than my head!!! As a side I ordered a "handful of fries" which was equally perfectly portioned (a handful is all anybody needs of fries), delicious tasting and frickin' a $1.25. Amen!!!! My friends ordered other styles of steak, which were similarly cooked fantastically, and some of those huuuuge baked potatoes which looked delicious. All in all, an insanely fun and affordable meal. Capers legit made me wish I lived in Detroit. Keep on, Capers! I love you.
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
I went to Capers before the pandemic. The quality of the food was great, you could order your meat by the ounce, select the doneness, the baked potatoes were jumbo size, and they had a small salad bar. It gets pretty crowded towards the evenings and weekends. I'd recommend going there to eat with friends if you're a carnivore and love your meats.
google avatar

Bd B.

Yelp
This is an ok place to grab a bite. The inside needs updating, but I can say their steaks are good and their loaded potatoes hits the spot. They do get a lot of customers on the weekends, so you might have to order your food in advance
google avatar

Tyronda R.

Yelp
I had ordered potato, skins and coconut shrimp, the coconut shrimp was not done, it was raw and the batter under the crust was not even done. It was all milky.

Yelp
The best steakhouse in the D hands downs I love it every time I come home it goes down

Yelp
Have been going there for years, and ever since Covid it has gone down hill. Went on Friday May 5th, and that will be the very last time. Took over 30 minutes just to order, and then Nothing came out together except the soup. First my daughters food, then mine, then my wife's and finally my son's. My wife's steak was and tasted spoiled. Told the manager, he apologized and said that he would bring out a new one. When the second steak came out, it was spoiled as well. Just left it uneaten and asked for the check. Again will never go back again.

Lynne K.

Yelp
We had such a good time celebrating my friends bday last night. It had been decades since I had been there and I believe they have new owners . Service was excellent, Tanya (Billie Jean) made our night so fun. Her dad, the owner even walked us out to our cars. I will definitely be back soon because the food and service are excellent!! Affordable good steaks are hard too find!!
google avatar

Yelp
Good food, friendly people. The only thing is the driveway and the parking sucks but otherwise.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food good service. Great Motown music. Drinks are pricey but worth it. Waitress was friendly and helpful. Steaks we're really good. Yum

Yelp
Overall a good experience. Capers was pretty busy so there was a bit of a wait, but the wait was worth it. I ordered the 20 oz delmonico medium it was cooked good and tasted great. My wife ordered the 10 oz filet and she said it was good. The service was excellent and the staff was very friendly. The price was not bad at all. The atmosphere was good to. I will be back.

Yelp
It had been almost 20 years since had visited! I used to live in the area, but after I moved, I tended to eat near my new home. This recent visit was just as enjoyable as all of my previous visits. Steak by the ounce, just the way it used to be. To be fair to all of my vegetarian, vegan and other friends who don't eat meat, they have a salad bar here. I saw it on the menu. I did not actually *see* the salad bar, but I trust that they have one. And nothing against Capers, but if you are into salads, Golden Corral might be a better choice for you. Okay, so on to my evening meal ... I grabbed a friend and off we went. We arrived just as the person parked in the lot next to the front door was leaving. We walked in, no waiting and we're promptly seated at the first table. Not the best seat in the house, but it served the purpose. Our waitress came by shortly thereafter and took drink orders. I had unsweetened tea, which I think comes with refills. They also have bottled sweet tea and lemonade, etc. Those are not free refills for obvious reasons. Once the drinks arrived, our waitress took our orders. We both ordered Delmonico's and loaded baked potato, with slight variations. My slight variation was sautéed onions and mushrooms. I also opted for the 'liquid cheese' offered as a topping on my baked potato. I am by no means a potato aficionado. It tasted good, I was happy. Just as the words came out of my mouth that perhaps we should have ordered an appetizer, the dinners arrived. They were cooked to perfection. At that point, anyone who knows me well realizes that conversation with me will cease. I have a task at hand and there is no time for talk. I look forward to the next time I visit, and I am pretty sure it won't be years from now....

Yelp
My fav steak place inside is small not a lot of room to maneuver in but food is excellent and service is great they always have specials going on

Yelp
Steak, steak and more steak!!! I have lived in Detroit my while life but I have to confess...today was my first time ever going to Caper's. Blame on the fact that I'm more of a westside if the city kinda girl! Me and husband was on this side of town on a Sunday afternoon and I said hey let's go check it since we are so close. Now my husband does not eat pork or red meat but I live for it! After checking out a few reviews here I had a good idea on what to expect so I felt like I was prepared. I was happy to see that they have a nice very newly paced secures parking lot with a great parking attendant. Once inside I was very surprised at how intimate it was...I was really expecting some large open dining area so I wouldn't end up jabbing the person next to me while cutting my steak. Well we were immediately seated after the lady in front of us finished complaining about having to wait for the remainder of her party before being able to be seated(I thought most restaurants do that). Anywho we were seated close to the bar where carry out orders are done and picked up. Yeap, exactly what you are thinking we ended up having unwanted conversations with people picking up their food. They really should come up with a better spot, how I don't know considering it is quite small on the inside. Well our waitress was very pleasant and offered us the various specials for the day which I really loved. She was very attentive and apologized when something was overlooked which was not much. I ordered a t-bone with a baked potato and the salad bar one trip. My husband ordered the NY York sandwich but was disappointed when the waitress came back to say that they didn't have anymore cole slaw. So he opted to get the turkey club sandwich which was still very good with some onion rings and we also had the jumbo shrimp. All of our food was good, not excellent but good. Oh, my husband a large glass of beer and I had a watermelon margarita. Yes I would go back!!

Yelp
I placed an order via Doordash and items were missing from the order when it arrived. The rude person I spoke with insisted the items were in the bag. Her option was for me to pick up items I'd paid for delivery for while the rest of my meal got cold. Wrong answer. Who would waste their time calling if their order was correct? Not only was the person rude, she hung up on me. So, I called Doordash who paid to replace the order. Thank you Doordash. I don't know the name of the person managing Doordash orders tonight (Sunday - November 15th) but if she worked for me she'd at minimum be written up for hanging up on a customer. The tag on the first order clearly reads "1 bag" but the corrected order was delivered in two bags. And it was only to replace the two of three items ordered. So obviously, the first order was wrong. If you're going to be nasty to a customer, please make sure you're right first!

Yelp
Great food kind of small but cozy.. Great service. Great carry out service. Catch a special

Yelp
Phyllis is our favorite server. New owners but the food was as good as the previous owners. Cosmopolitan was delicious!

Yelp

Yelp
I had one of the best steaks of my life at Capers. It's not much to look at from the outside, and hell, the same goes for the inside. But the steaks. My god. The steaks. You just can't find better quality steaks within $15 of what you'll pay here. As someone else mentioned, this isn't a fancy place. There were only two servers on a busy Saturday afternoon with a line out the door. But what they do in the kitchen, they do very well. We started with two crocks of French onion soup. Excellent, with plenty of cheese. We each ordered a steak - a Delmonico for me and a fillet for him. Jacob also ordered their macaroni salad as a side. We didn't wait long for our entrees. Our steaks were prepared just as we asked and were expertly seasoned. The macaroni side was boring, so I'd skip it next time. I savored every bite of my steak, though, and Jacob did as well. Our bill was only $34 for two big steaks, two crocks of tasty soup, some garlic bread and macaroni salad. I think Capers is a fine establishment with a good thing going on. Everyone should visit at least once in their life. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
I don't know how it was before Covid but right now it's sort of looks like a train station or bus Station but if you're in the mood for meat and potatoes carry out only this is the place
google avatar

Raven W.

Yelp
The food is delicious. But the place is very small inside. I order a 12 oz steak and a cheese potato. The potatoes are huge. The bathroom is in a very weird spot. It's right next to the kitchen. I will most likely return here. I will avoid coming late. It was very packed when I went.
google avatar

Annie T.

Yelp
You should be very very nice the last time I went about a year ago the food was horrible so was the workers everyone had an attitude
google avatar

Corey H.

Yelp
This was about my 4th or 5th time back at capers. We went Sunday afternoon right at opening (3pm) there was a line of about 35 people. The food Is good and priced really nice for steak( 85 cents an ounce Delmonico) . I've been here a few times and I would say 90% of the time they cook your steak perfectly. Coming exactly at opening and being in the back of the line, we were seated very quickly but of course the staff was slammed all at once so it took about 2 hours to get steaks. Normally service is a lot quicker and the staff is really nice. The drinks are also great and they aren't stingy on the libation. They also have a very small and simple but very very good salad bar (all you can eat). My only issue with this visit was what I saw with the salad bar. The bottom of the bar is refrigerated and this is where they keep back up supplies for the salad bar I witnessed someone re-stocking the underneath refrigerator and they openly sneezed directly into it and then shut the door. I did notice that that all of the items are packaged however it was still very offputting and disgusting to see.

Yelp
It definitely IS as good as it gets (for the food that is) I was very sketched out by the appearance and location of this place (Detroit, very bad area). The outside of the building looks like a dive corner bar, and would not have been a place I would have walked into if it weren't for the advice of my coworker. I'm SO glad that I didn't judge this book by the cover. I chose to go with the cajun steak bakes (medium/medium rare), as well as the salad bar. The bites arrived perfectly cooked, and with onions and mushrooms. I've had steak bites at a much higher price point, and these were by far the best!!! I ordered a side salad, which was help yourself at the salad bar. Although the salad bar was nothing to write home about, it served its purpose as support to a main dish. I would not want to fill up on that salad bar with the amazing main dish on the way! The wait staff was awesome: prompt, friendly, attentive, and knowledgable. Also, the house steak sauce is a must-try! I typically like the steak flavor to stand on its own, which these steak bites would have no problem doing. However, it makes a tasty dip to the garlic bread you get served! Would be happy to give it a solid 5 if it weren't for the building itself.
google avatar

Terri G.

Yelp
This is my new favorite place!!! Service is good and food was amazing!!! And the best of all, it was affordable. I ordered drinks, a T bone, red skin potatoes with broccoli. My husband ordered the catfish and spaghetti! Again, everything was delicious. I will gladly take the drive to enjoy this place! I was a first timer, however I have been converted. Also, if Nate is working, sit in his section. He's a great waiter!!
google avatar

Nichole M.

Yelp
Worst dinner I've ever ordered! Only to find out the stuffed potato costs as much as a steak. When it's 'special Steak cut day' all you get is a 12oz piece of fat. Gross

Yelp
Capers is housed in a small, rather nondescript building on the south-east side of Gratiot, just west of 8 Mile. Upon entering the restaurant, which is dimly lit, the first thing I noticed was the 70's-style formica tables, but once my eyes adjusted, I began to notice the cool art crowding the walls - the interior is nicer than first meets the eye. What I brought my family here for was the accolades-winning steak by the ounce. And my 10 ounces of filet - medium rare - was the best steak I've had in a long time. At $1.80/oz, it was only $18. Cha-ching! My daughter and hubby also really enjoyed their steaks - a NY strip and Delmonico respectively, both medium rare. My dad did not particularly love his steak - a Delmonico (medium) - but he's not a big steak eater by any stretch of the imagination, so that undoubtedly influenced his opinion. My mom was the only one who chose a non-steak option, and she said that her turkey reuben was really good. Service by Nathan was outstanding; friendly, knowledgeable, and patient. Drinks were generous at decent prices. I don't know how often I'll get to Capers, since it's a long haul from where I live in Northville, but I will definitely be back again, and if I lived nearer, this would be one of my go-to places to eat. Try it, you'll like it!
google avatar

Kanita A.

Yelp
Awesome place for date night! I highly recommend getting the Coconut Shrimp. They're massive shrimp and they're great to share but you might not want to share after tasting them. You can't leave a steak house without ordering a steak. Capers sells their steak by the ounce and it's seasoned beautifully, cooked perfectly (tender and juicy). It's always busy and the place is small so come early if you aren't willing to wait in line. Trust me it's worth the wait. If you're old enough to drink try one of the alcoholic beverages (Piña Colada) it comes in a huge glass. It's pretty strong. It's like a mixture of Rum Chata and Malibu Rum. Beware you will get drunk.
google avatar

Kai L.

Yelp
You can't go wrong at Capers! This is the spot for a tender delicious steak! They're also reasonable too, so that makes it even better. However, with the new changes that Capers is going through, I have noticed that they have changed the way they make their drinks. Normally, I would come here for a top shelf Long Island because they are the best I've ever had. (Well, 2nd best to another place but I won't say) They would serve the drink in a nice tall wide glass but now, it has changed to a skinny short glass packed with ice. It seems as if I'm getting half of the alcohol I did but for the same price. Now, I am not a lush or anything but I do appreciate getting my moneys worth. The drinks are no longer getting my moneys worth. But Capers is still the spot! I like the changes they're making to the building itself, those were much needed. I'll still be hanging out here though. It's a true Detroit gem!

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in my old neighborhood. Prepare to wait as they do not take reservations. We had coconut shrimp, steaks by the oz, huge margarita and beer, huge baked potato and more. All very decent. The staff Jennifer, Nate and Country made us feel at home. The staff even chaperoned my wife outside to smoke. I celebrated my birthday here and got delicious cheesecake and a public shout out too. If you have not been and are not scared of the city, I would try it at least once. Ps they do not have seating for groups larger than 6.

French onion was delish. Everything was very good. Lotta fun too. Will b back If ur in the area do this place. A lot of activity.
