Where to Spot Spam Musubi Around D.C. | Eater DC

"It’s all in the name: Capital Musubi may have other Hawaiian offerings, but the musubi reigns supreme. Home of the “Supersize” musubi, the best-seller is the spicy salmon musubi, but coming in close is a kimchi musubi made with egg, a chicken musubi made with pickled cabbage, a shrimp tempura musubi, and an el diablo musubi made with serrano peppers and fiery mayo. But the list doesn’t stop there. With two locations — one in Chantilly and another in McLean — a designated musubi day trip is merited. Price: Starts at $8.50" - Abi Newhouse

Google
Spam musubi are usually my comfort food and this place made it even better. I got the kimchi and double egg spam musubi. It was super delicious. We always come here whenever we’re at Tysons mall.

Google
I liked it. I chickened out from getting a SPAM offering and opted for the loco moco which is hamburger, egg, and a delicious brown gravy on the side. I'd get a combo which is much better value than a large carte.

Google
Spam musubi was one of my favorite comfort foods. Once I became a vegetarian of course this was a challenge. Capital has a tofu musubi which is a decent attempt but not how I would do it. The tofu is just firm tofu vs. I'd imagine a fried version with some type of flavor would be better. It's wrapped in saran wrap but somehow is messy b/c it falls apart. I've eaten here a few times, service is meh and the atmosphere is definitely not somewhere you'd want to linger, not many tables seems to focus on takeout. OK value. I will confess the best spam musubi was one that I did myself using a plant-based spam you can find any grocery store.

Google
This has been one of my favorite spots for years! I love their OG Super Size Musubi with eggs and spam! Tried their Ube rice Krispy today, too! So good!

Google
I’m not too picky, but if you pay for something it better be at least decent. Service is just ok, but food is awful. $10 is insanely expensive for food of this quality. How do you mess up rice? The rice was dry and slightly hard (still edible but definitely needed more water or something). The steamed buns (savory and sweet) taste like they are a week old. Super dry bread and barely any filling.

Google
I tried the spicy chicken onigiri it was so good, tried my friends chicken teriyaki masubi that was so good too. Chicken karaage the fried chicken in that tasted burnt, made it hard for me to eat, but my friend taught it tasted good. My friend got spicy fried rice and liked it , I thought it was okay. For the overall price, serving size, and taste I give this place a 4/5.

Google
The food was okay. The service was good. I wouldn’t run to this place again. It was just fine

Google
I ordered the spicy fried rice and was disappointed. Wasn't that spicy, it was just kinda salty. The rice was fresh made which I guess is nice but honestly I couldn't really tell an appreciable difference between it and the rice you can get anywhere else in the mall. The beef was nice and tender and well cooked but otherwise everything else was pretty plain. Next time I go I'll try the actual musubi and see if the main dish is worth the trip.

Yelp
Omg I've only been once but this place is TOO freaking good! We got the loco moco fries, OG musubi, spam spam musubi, and teriyaki chicken onigiri the portions were on point, left us stuffed! You order at kiosk, which is nice, and the staff is very friendly Loved the restaurant decor, and actually liked that there isn't a ton of seating lol

Yelp
Kiosks to order and a few seats inside, a few more outside but tysons is always busy so it can be hard to find a spot Mango Sparkling - Very carbonated -- to the point where the intense bubbles were surprising and added a slightly bitter aftertaste. The mango flavor leaned artificial. 1/5 Spicy Chicken Musubi - Definitely large and generously filled, but the texture was off. The rice was mushy, and the seaweed was soft and soggy, making it hard to bite through. Chicken was slightly dry. Just okay overall. 1.75/5 Poke Bowl (Salmon + Spicy Salmon) - The rice was seasoned but still mushy. Toppings were light in proportion to the rice, so the balance felt off. Salmon was just okay -- not very fresh-tasting -- and the spicy salmon lacked flavor. 2.25/5

Yelp
It's in the food court across from Popeyes. Order on a kiosk, so no interaction with workers honestly. The food came out pretty quick and it was good.
google avatar

Yelp
A decent fast casual spot. I ordered food on the kiosk, which was helpful to see all the menu options. I ordered the spicy chicken musubi. Wasn't a fan that the chicken was cold though, which was disappointing as I hoped the chicken was freshly cooked. It was in fact very spicy due to the jalapeño in the sandwich. The musubi was $10. I didn't like my order, but giving the benefit of the doubt that I ordered wrong.
google avatar

Fiona L.

Yelp
One of my favorite food options in Tysons mall. The chicken in the musubi is crispy and warm. The egg is slightly sweet. It's not as good as in Hawaii but it hits the spot when I'm craving musubis here. They have kiosks for ordering. I couldn't customize no sauce on the machine but I flagged down one of the people behind the counter after ordering and they were happy to accommodate.

Yelp
Tucked away in the side food court where Panda Express and McDonalds are is Capital Musubi - a Hawaiian and Japanese fusion fast casual restaurant. The musubi are advertised as super sized and they don't disappoint - I honestly almost couldn't finish mine! Husband enjoyed his traditional musubi, and my teriyaki chicken with kimchi added was great! The space has limited seating inside, but there's plenty of space outside in the food court proper. Everything was served fresh and fast, so a great stop for some place for a quick bite!

Yelp
Capital Musubi is serving up Hawaiin food to an area that definitely lacks it, and for that it's worth checking out. I personally find the musubi hard to eat - the reason sushi works is because they are eaten in one bit, but when you increase the size to that of a sandwich they just fall apart. As such, I definitely preferred when I had a bowl from here. The tempura and karaage are crunchy, light, and delicious. Fits perfectly with either musubi or a bowl. Plenty of flavor between the refreshing pickled veggies, egg, chicken, and sauce. The flavored rice krispies are a fun snack to have afterwards, too. I was a fan of the ube flavor. Tysons has a lot of competition, but Capital Musubi has it's Hawaiin niche solidified.

Yelp
Lived in Hawaii for seven years & one of the things we miss more than the weather & island life is the food. We saw this at the Mall & got excited. Inside was cool, nice decor and plenty of seating. It was organized and clean, staff was friendly enough - not much interaction as you order what you want on a screen. We did a combo, but Hawaiin Mac was not a selection we added as I seriously miss Hawaiian style Mac. The Spam Musubi was pretty good, tasty and we miss the spam in Hawaii. You can get it almost everywhere from 7-11 to Church functions- LOL - big difference is it was cheap. The Miso soup was bland and watery. The biggest let down was the Mac, it was not what I expected. Not Hawaiian style at all (to me) it had bacon bits which were not crispy, and it was more mac cheese minus cheese? Overall kind of disappointing.

Yelp
I wasn't expecting to find a musubi spot in the mall, but I'm definitely glad it's there! They have a variety of musubi flavors and different options so I appreciated being able to order on the touch screens so I could review the menu. I went with the OG supersize musubi and Lilikoi Hawaiian Sun - perfect combo.

Yelp
When it comes to Capital Musubi, this place gets it right. I have been to countless places where they serve Spam Musubi but the ratio of rice to meat over seaweed is always off. Not this place though where it is the perfect amount. I got the combo where it's Spam Musubi, Miso Soup, and Soda ( I opted for water instead ). I like the fact you can order at the touchscreen up front so you don't really have much interactions with the staff too. It's very quick to order and quick to pick up. As for the Spam Musubi, it's a big portion of spam and eggs with rice and seaweed topped with Sesame seeds. It's very filling and I wish I ordered more! The Miso Soup is nothing but Miso Paste mixed with hot water so I didn't expect too much from it. Very good for a Mall Snack or a small meal. I would definitely come back for more!
google avatar

Yelp
FOOD I ordered the chicken teriyaki spam musubi. The teriyaki sauce was delightfully sweet and savory, but the chicken itself was a bit dry. Additionally, the spam was unseasoned, making it feel uncharacteristic of standard musubi. SERVICE The staff are kind and friendly. Three self-order kiosks are available at the back of the store. AMBIANCE Ample seating is available inside the store. It was neat and tidy.
google avatar

Yelp
Got the spicy salmon musubi while shopping in the Tyson's corner mall. Definitely very very spicy as they put whole chopped jalapeño peppers in it. Was surprised that it was a lot spicier than we thought. The service was fine they were all nice. There's a few seats to sit down at but if it gets crowded you're not going to be able to sit down inside to eat. Overall their bowls and musubi has an average size portion.
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
Food is assembled when ordered with pre cooked ingredients. I was more than a little surprised with cold kimchi chicken served on warm rice, not my favorite. Shrimp tempura were room temperature and tamago was cold from refrigerator. Flavor was good, not sure I would come back for cold chicken.
google avatar

Liyang S.

Yelp
Delicious sushi seaweed enveloping piping hot rice sandwiching yummylicious spam and egg. Service is good. Ambiance is good. Time to get it on; nom nom nom Don't get the chicken ramen miso soup. it's not worth it.
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
This place has the worst mac n cheese. It's not cheesy and the sesame seeds are a weird touch. I have been to Hawaii and I can assure you that they don't serve mac n cheese like this. The pasta had a weird smell to it, and resembled the vegan mac n cheese I have had before (but tastes worse for some reason). The chicken musubi was good, although the bottom of the musubi has a lot of sauce which made it really really spicy. If you are getting it, make sure you can handle spicy. The musubis are big portions though so one order is definitely enough for one person.

Yelp
Expectations did not meet reality. The menu looked promising with a wide array of musubi and rice plates that it felt like a hawaiian food dream. However, the food was extremely underwhelming. I got the surf n turf musubi while my partner got the chicken karaage bowl. If you're not familiar with surf n turf, it's basically suppose to be a seafood and meat combo. First red flag is seeing the meat be a straight up meat patty. I took my first bite and my first thoughts were that these combination of ingredients was practically a stomach ache waiting to happen. The seaweed was a tough chew and didn't even hold the musubi properly that the whole thing began to fall apart by my second bite and the musubi became deconstructed in my hands. The combo got too intense for my stomach (primarily the patty) that I had to take it out and it was only then that the musubi became somewhat decent. The chicken karaage bowl was very mid and the chicken was kinda dry. The rice it comes with is sushi rice and it did not complement the chicken well. He ended up giving up on the rice and went straight for the chicken. Maybe do yourself a favor and go to L&L instead of you're craving hawaiian.

Yelp
There's something simple yet delicious about the combination of Spam, egg, rice, and seaweed with a bit of soy sauce. Capital Musubi however some how still messed it up with over whelmingly sweet sauce and rice paper that are broken apart. The service is ok and place is relatively spacious. Otherwise nothing special to write home about.

Yelp
A very quick lunch while shopping around in Tysons. My first time eating here and would definitely come back. I got the Shrimp Tempura Musubi and was pleasantly surprised at the size! Musubis come boxed and divided in two to make it easier to eat. However, it is still a little bit messy (in a good way!).
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
I kept seeing this spot on yelp and it looked good! I expected more honestly. Although I will say these are so big! And very filling. Maybe too saucy? At least for me. The kimchi fried rice was okay, needed more flavor. And there were probably 3 pieces of meat in it. You may like it better than me! Don't knock it till you try it yourself.

Yelp
Capital Musubi has the most creative Musubi menu I've seen so far in the DMV. Tons of options, combos, and sides to choose from. While I've gotten their more standard spam musubi before, this time I opted for a tofu musubi. My one criticism of this item is they should have marinated the tofu rather than just stacking a plain slab that amplified the spice from the kimchi. Still, the red cabbage slaw was absolutely fabulous. They also had special Rice Krispie options when I was there. I got the ube flavor, and it was so, so good. Note the menu says "Rice Krispies": only one is included per order, but it's a good size. Pickup service was fast, and the cashier seemed friendly. Not a great place to eat inside the restaurant unless the mall is completely empty--the seating is also limited to Capital Musubi diners, which is fair enough, but if you're at the mall with someone who chose to order from a different restaurant, you'll have to sit elsewhere.

Yelp
I've seen this place tucked back in the food court area of Tyson's Corner Mall on the first floor to the left of Wasabi, the rotating sushi place. It's a smallish size restaurant with a cute rice ball mascot that I didn't give a second thought cause I've never really been a big spam fan. A coworker said I really needed to check it out as it was her favorite place to eat in the mall. Happy to say I see why now! You can order and pay via kiosk which allows a nice look over the menu. If you pay cash you can order in person at the register, it just might take a few minutes. Basically what they serve is a modified Hawaiian/Japanese hybrid musubi. Your choice of fillings (ranging from spam, egg, fried chicken, shrimp, crab etc), toppings and sauces, sandwiched between a thick layer of rice and wrapped in seaweed. They also sell rice balls, rice bowls and a variety of sides. Being our first time here we kept it simple ordering the OG (Spam, scrambled egg, sauce and furikakke) and a crab salad rice ball. Flavor wise it was delicious but messy to eat. It was hard to peel the cling wrap off the musubi and the nori would stick to the wrap. Same with the rice ball. It didn't take away from the delicious taste, just a bit of an annoyance. Don't know if I would make a full meal out of the musubi but it was a nice treat. Décor was trendy and funky (in a good way!) with plenty of seating and a lot of take out orders. Plan on stopping back when we're at the mall and craving a snack.

Yelp
Food - 4 service -4.5 ambiance -4 Solid for a quick snack. I got the shrimp tempura musubi. Tasty. I felt the rice was a tad mushy but overall again a great spot to pick up a portable meal. The serving was a lot larger than I expected as well. You can easily split one order for a snack.
google avatar

Camryn K.

Yelp
I can't say if the musubi here is good compared to other musubi places since I had never had musubi before this place, but I can say that it looked really good and it was quite delicious. I got the shrimp tempura musubi. I thought it was a tad salty, and the shrimp could have been crispier, but overall it was very tasty. I liked that it had a nice amount of sauce in it, and a good amount of shrimp. The service was pretty fast, and I think the price wasn't too bad. I would definitely come back here again to try some of their other musubis!
google avatar

Tina C.

Yelp
Super quick service, lots of empty indoor seating. Standard musubi, which is always tasty. A bit pricey for what it is, but a good quick grab when needed, especially if during a shopping trip at Tysons!
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
Watch out, look out; excellent musubi ahead! I have been curious about Capital Musubi and have been wanting to try it. Had a tight schedule, so ordered some musubi on Door Dash. I cannot speak for in restaurant wait times. All I can say is my dasher was very fast - steam bus were still nice and warm! I ordered the El Diablo and the BBQ steamed buns. The El Diablo is a monster! Packed with amazing flavor it was so good! I chomped through half before remembering to snap a photo! It was really good, and now I want to try more! So, why not five stars? As much as I wanted too, I could not. The steam bun was a 180 difference from the musubi both in flavor and quality. There was little stuffing and it just fell flat. Maybe with all the other awesome stuff on the menu, there is not room for these? Regardless, I will definitely be a return customer, will explore the menu (just no more steam buns for me). You should try it out for sure, El Diablo for some sweet delicious heat!
google avatar

Sharon H.

Yelp
Eh nothing to write home about but the surf and turf limited special is pretty good with a good filling to rice ratio. However, it's just like a regular burger--would probably just go with the OG. The sparkling juice is too sweet.
google avatar

Joe R.

Yelp
I can't order from here. They have a bunch of plastic barriers so you can't see your food being made. So weird.

Maria K.

Yelp
Amazing musubi!!! Great selection of options and generous serving of musubi Great for a quick bite or a meal alone
google avatar

Marc M.

Yelp
We loved this place so much we picked up a hoody! My spicy salmon was actually quite spicy, so I'd probably skip the jalapeños next time. The Spam egg and cheese musubi looked amazing. The serving sizes here are surprisingly large, so being your appetite.
google avatar

Jahmelia B.

Yelp
I was on the hunt for dinner fast and I ended up here. This place is a quick to serve restaurant that has Musabi and a few other Asian favorites. The decor inside the restaurant is really cute and Instagramable. a bowl with tofu and tuna, and it was just OK.. I didn't have a ton of interaction with the staff because you order your food on an iPad at a kiosk. However, when I did go up to the counter to ask a question, there were some employees eating directly behind the counter, and they were on their phones. They definitely seemed annoyed that I asked a question from a serving standpoint, it wasn't the best interaction. Overall, this place will definitely satisfy your hunger but beyond that it's just OK.
google avatar

Trendy D.

Yelp
I actually really enjoyed the rice cake over the fried rice bowl. Don't get me wrong the spicy fried rice and chicken bowl was good, but it was not nearly as good. The food was made fairly fast. They place your order using a kios. You don't really interact with anyone for service. It's a very casual spot located on the lower level of the mall. I recommend trying the rice cake!
google avatar

Devon M.

Yelp
I didn't even know this place was in the mall until this week and I've been to Tyson's so many times. I haven't had a musubi in many years and I was excited to see this place. It's on the first floor of the mall down the same hallway that Cinnabon is on. The food was very good here. We got the El Diablo musubi and the chicken karaage fried rice. The El Diablo was very good. It wasn't too spicy and held up well until we got into the movie theater. The musubi is covered in plastic wrap so beware of that before you start chowing down. The fried rice was okay. Definitely not the reason you would want to go here. The service was fairly quick and it was made fresh. It's a self order kiosk and then the employees make the food and call out your name. The ambiance is Hawaiian themed and rightfully so since it's Hawaiian food. It has some neon signs and flamingos and what not up. Very casual and easy going place. Definitely stop by and try this place if you don't mind seaweed and rice. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Cyril M.

Yelp
Really huge musubi. It was $9.50 per musubi. It's huge though. Me and my friend shared one. It was huge for me. I'm not a big eater. But my friend ate her half very quickly. They have mostly ipad ordering tablets like 4 of them. There's also a cashier if you are paying cash. Its nice, the inside of the resto is cute!
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
I was at Tyson's with my son before going to see a movie and we wanted to grab a quick snack beforehand. Once you walk into Capital Musubi you are greeted with fun decor and kiosks to order off of. We ordered the California musubi and the fries. Unfortunately It did take them a while to prepare our order, took about a 20 minute wait. The musubi was huge and tasty but I wouldn't order the fries again. They lacked flavor and most of them were overcooked.
google avatar

Dennis W.

Yelp
I had the shrimp musubi and the loco moco fries. I'll be honest vegetables in musubi was new to me but it worked. I enjoyed the both items so much I went back a second time (on another day for clarification). I wish there was a place like this where I live. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Aileen L.

Yelp
Fast service. There are touch screen kiosks to order your food. We got two musubi combos to go so we could split the musubi: loco moco and the chicken. I foolishly forgot that the loco moco came with gravy when I ate my half. Without the gravy the musubi was mediocre, but having that gravy really added the flavor. Don't be a fool and use the gravy in the cup. We ended up using leftover gravy as a dip for French fries and making "poutine". The chicken musubi was ok but left me wanting a bit more flavor. The purple crispy rice treat (think ube Rice Krispie treat) was a favorite and I wish we had gotten another one of those instead of the roasted edamame side which was just crunch.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
For mall food, this one is a bit different. I was looking for something other than the chains and fast food (all kind of mediocre), but also something quick. This place was perfect for that. Ordered a couple of musubi and it was plenty filling (even had some left over) for a reasonable price. Ordering was pretty straight forward and service was fine. This is small little dining room, but nice to be out of the main mall traffic where the tables are for the rest of the restaurants. are.

David P.

Yelp
It's like they forgot to finish making the onigiri and wrapped it in such a way that you have to complete it yourself because the nori wasn't even against the rice it was just between two sheets of plastic. The haupia was difficult to open. The shrimp tempura musubi still had the tail shells on so that wasn't appetizing to bite into. It's a good thing I put in my own tip amount instead of choosing their presets of 15/20/25 percent.
google avatar

Rachel K.

Yelp
This spicy salmon musubi doesn't play around! It was very spicy! Overall this was a very satisfying snack but I don't know if I would get this specific flavor again. It was messy to eat and falling apart easily.
google avatar

Lillian L.

Yelp
I feel like this place was so overhyped and pricey. Definitely great for pictures though! My favorite was the shrimp tempura musubi, the other ones were just okay and I felt like lacked flavor and had way too much rice. The spicy ones were super spicy so be careful. I think I'm also too critical because we've been used to the musubi in Hawaii. I did enjoy the mac and cheese and would get that again. If I went back I'd definitely want to try their bowls instead because I think the musubis were a hit or miss. Also would skip the cookie- the one we got was super hard and dry unfortunately. What was nice was the ordering on a kiosk and you just sit and wait. Located in the mall too on the first floor food court so plenty of parking in the garages.
google avatar

Virginia H.

Yelp
A supersized musubi is an option at the lower level food court in the mall; a bit pricey, but more than enough to share! We tried the Chicken and Egg Musubi. It was decent, but not as great as I expected it. The drizzle of ghost pepper ketchup added some spice to it! It comes with a significantly large portion size and it had an overwhelming amount of rice to me. You can easily place your order from their self service kiosks. It does get crowded with a long wait time when it gets busy. There are a couple tables in the dine in area and it does tend to fill up quickly.
google avatar

Paul J.

Yelp
Another visit to Capitol Musubi, another round of good food to go. As usual, we got several musubi, including the classic Spam musubi and a tuna fish musubi. We also got an order of fries along with a shrimp tempura bowl. A little heavy on the mayonnaise, but overall a filling bowl with a variety of flavors and textures all in one place. If you're into Musubi, this is the place to go in the DC Area!
google avatar

Kevin T.

Yelp
Nice sized musubi's for about $10; it is a bit pricey for what you're getting but it is worth a try. We ordered on one of the kiosk's, so ordering is really easy and fast. We got the 'Double Trouble' which was delicious. The sauce was really good with some slight spice. Eating it was kind of a mess. There could've been more seaweed to help cover one of the main sides that you hold, but instead I was holding the rice... which eventually resulted in everything falling apart.
google avatar

Patina C.

Yelp
Aesthetics are great. They got me with their neon sign and bright lighting. Clean and modern inside. It was my first time trying musubi. I ordered the spicy chicken musubi and the BBQ pork steamed buns. Loved the block of rice that my spicy chicken was sandwiched in between. Found the nori a bit too fishy for me. I ended up just unwrapping the seaweed. Overall, it was the perfect amount of heat wrapped together! I always enjoy a good kick. BBQ pork steamed buns were a bit dry. I was expecting them to be filled more and was hoping for more of a savory taste. Service was quick and I like how they have the virtual kiosks that keep the lines short. I'd come back for the musubi!
google avatar

Jennie A.

Yelp
Capital Musubi did great a fulfilling my musubi craving. Warning: spam-phobs stay away. I ordered the OG classes/best seller and was surprised by the flavor! They add extra teriyaki sauce which complements the salty spam so nicely. The egg wasn't the greatest, but the overall taste was good. I wish the spam was a little more crunchy or something to add some texture. Also the seaweed wrap was a little hard to chew. Otherwise, this was a super tasty snack to have while shopping. Will def have to try the other options.

Catalina L.

Yelp
waking in it seemed a bit musty, however I pushed past it and got a spicy salmon and kimchi onigiri. The packaging is not consumer friendly idk why but each one I opened broke because the paper lining was in between the seaweed and rice. not sure what happened there. the taste was ok.
google avatar

Angela K.

Yelp
We stopped by at an off-hour between lunch and dinner, hoping for a quick snack before our dinner reservation. We ordered the spicy salmon and OG musubi to share, and wow--both were larger than we expected. It was a self-order setup, so we didn't interact with the staff, but the food was delicious. We thought the spicy salmon was very spicy, but both of us have weak stomaches. I would recommend asking for little jalapenos if allowed. Conveniently located within the mall's food court.
google avatar

Ellen C.

Yelp
I have heard so much about this spot so I was super excited to try it. You place your order on the tablet stands and then they call your name when it's ready. I was super indecisive because all the options seemed yummy but I ended up ordering the og tuna musubi. The place became pretty packed during the time I was there and I watched everyone pick up their orders one by one. 20 minutes had passed and I still hadn't gotten mine but apparently it didn't go through the system even though I was charged. However they were will nice enough to prepare me my order. Upon my first bite I kind of wished I had ordered another option. I thought the musubi as a whole could use more sauce but the taste definitely grew on me as I kept eating although I was also super hungry haha. Don't get me wrong the musubi was still yummy! I would come again to try another option. The only thing is that I wish the musubis contained more veggies to add a fresh balance to the large portions of protein and rice.

Yelp
Hawaiian style musubi with a twist. It's "supersized". No more buying 4-5 regular musubi for 1 serving. Recommend OG to start or Diablo if you can handle spicy. If you don't like seaweed, they also make it in a bowl
