"Julia Watson, owner of Capitol Grounds in Montpelier, knew the basement was flooded early Tuesday morning, and after checking the cafe's security cameras from home and not seeing water in the dining area, she called the city's public works department for proactive help." - Jacqueline Cain

Came in on a rainy Sunday and it was nicely warm, not too busy, and service was prompt. My tea was super hot, and my Panini sandwich delish and fresh. Quick, too. Nice menu options including vegetarian. They have lots of their bagged coffee choices, their Bernie specialty and brewing accessories for those seeking higher coffee perfection. Will return.

It is a bitter cold morning with the temperature at a balmy -1. I am in the Capitol city of Montpelier, Vermont...at Capitol Grounds. Warm welcome and the smells of coffee are apparent upon walking in. I was travelling with my parents. They ordered a breakfast sandwich called the Greta. It was served on a croissant with a fried egg, pesto, tomato, and a sharp cheddar. My parents gave it a solid A. My mom ordered a fancy latte. She was tickled pink that they put a heart on the latte. I enjoyed a Lox Bagel. Served on Capitol Grounds homemade original bagel with cream cheese, dill, salmon, and capers (A-)... I paired this with a Natalie's Organic Orange Juice. This was followed with a fresh raspberry peach muffin. It had "sanding" or turbinado sugar on the top. The muffin was chocked full of raspberry and peach pieces. This was a solid A+ muffin. The atmosphere was super with lots of great people watching opportunities. Everyone was friendly and a little chatter could be heard. Just a really great breakfast spot!

Google
Good coffee and pastries. They have a good amount of beans for sale with detailed tasting notes. I went with the Bernie Sanders blend. Both the light and dark roast were very good. If your in the area is a great coffee option.

Capitol Grounds Cafe, located in the heart of Montpelier’s downtown, is a charming spot for coffee lovers. I ordered a cappuccino and a double chocolate chip cookie. The cappuccino was excellent—rich and perfectly balanced—but the cookie was a bit too sweet for my taste. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, with a clean space and soft jazz playing in the background, creating a relaxed atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and would definitely return.

I just got decaf ice coffee to go, but the flavor was amazing! I don't usually notice that much, but this hit me like a most wonderful mack truck. Awesome flavor!

Google
Very good food! I got the basic sandwich, with cheddar, eggs, and bacon. It was delicious, with a good ratio of ingredients. I wish there was a bit more bacon but otherwise the sandwich was very tasty. The atmosphere was busy but quaint, with beautiful decorations. Make sure to check it out if you’re in the area!

Google
This place is fantastic only downfall was we got the wrong cream cheese on our bagel. I am editing my response as I failed to add despite the wrong cream cheese given my BFF ate her half and loved it. The flavor just wasn't for me. I do know the error would have been corrected if I had brought it to someone's attention but we had had left and ate on the road. It was just a sign I didn't need it.😉

Google
We had an event in town and had Capitol Grounds supply our food and beverages. Everything was wonderful. Communication at the planning end smooth. Food delivered right on time. Pastries yummy. Sandwiches well sized. Cookies to die for! Oh yea - and then there was great coffee too. I highly recommend.

Yelp
5 stars for great tasting drip coffee (tried medium roast), friendly service and for having a brio train play area for younger kids (my 4 year old appreciated).

Yelp
The place gets packed on the weekends and I can see why. Such a cute place and the staff is super friendly and quick. We ordered a butter croissant and a ham and Swiss croissant. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Came in on a Tuesday around 10:30am. This place is hopping. All seating was full and there was a line to order and for pickup. We ordered the spicy biscuit, the basic, a dill cheese bagel and three coffees. Our cashier was efficient in her manner. By the time we ordered the dining area cleared out so we sat at a table. The table we sat at was sticky and needed cleaning-so we did it). The sandwiches came out quickly and were nicely prepared. The coffee (Americano) was so smooth and not bitter. Glad we found this local place.

Yelp
I had the South West Burrito for $9.50 and was disappointed. First off, it was an extremely small burrito. Inside it was mainly scrambled egg with a microscopic amount of roast beef. My partner had some sort of bagel which tasted better and represented better value for money.

Yelp
So glad this spot was open on a Sunday afternoon - perfect for post-ski! $6.50 for a 24oz iced maple latte and $2 for a giant cranberry chocolate chip cookie, which is on par for the area. cozy seating area with people working, reading, and chatting. friendly staff and breakfast and lunch menus available as well as baked goods and a few bagel options. loved all the natural lighting as well! would definitely recommend!

Yelp
I spent a good while in Capitol Grounds this morning, nursing a large cold brew (even though it was barely 60 degrees) and using their wifi for two work calls and some Facebooking. Located in downtown Montpelier around the corner from the State Capitol, this is a busy coffee shop. There is a pretty constant flow of customers coming and going and I had a prime spot near the pickup area to watch. The cold brew was excellent. Good, rich coffee and the service was friendly. Nearly all the breakfast offerings are carbs so I didn't have one of their delicious looking croissants or omelet sandwiches. But they looked good. Not all of the seats have power outlets and I think their wifi password rotates, so check it out before taking a seat and you won't have to move when the battery runs out. Yelp
RUDE AF!!! I DO NOT recommend this place. I don't really care usually but my fiancè ordered a latte and realized he wasn't sure if the latte came with whole milk or 2% so when he asked the guy with long dark hair behind the counter making drinks if he could have whole, stating that it was okay if it was already made, the guy said it was 2% by default, DRAMATICALLY threw the drink out and then gave my fiance a short drink with 2 inches empty on the top. Garbage customer service. Total BS.

Jalen J.

Yelp
"The basic" sandwich was okay... I found it insane that they have no American cheese.. That's pretty unheard of and is most definitely one of the best cheese options for a breakfast sandwich. I wouldn't be interested in coming here again until they carry American cheese Also orange juice is $5..... the sandwich was a reasonable $6

Tink R.

Yelp
Enjoyed our first lunch at CGC with a local today. Had a turkey club sandwich which was very tasty and our friend had a ham/cheese panini. We were surprised there were no chips on the side. We'd try it again when we're back in town.

Brad S.

Yelp
Stopped in for coffee and a sandwich. None of the sandwiches on the lunch menu have prices. When you ask what the prices are, it's as if you are bothering them. They say "they are all different "when I specifically asked about one they had to go into the system and try to figure out how much that sandwich was. Why would you not list your prices? I don't wanna order a sandwich and find out that it was a $20 sandwich. We ordered the turkey club which was $15 and was good but I would not go back because they don't list their prices and make you feel cheap for asking what the prices are!

Yelp
I enjoy Capitol Grounds each time I visit Montpelier. Good coffee, great blueberry muffins fresh and warm right out of the oven. Relaxing atmosphere for journaling.

Michelle M.

Yelp
Amazing food, service was a little slow, amazing drinks. Atmosphere was a little loud for comfort.

Claire B.

Yelp
Good, comforting, conscious (in all the ways) local specialty coffees and eatery. We stop whenever we can!

Ben S.

Yelp
Ordered an Americano(hot). Drink was a little too hot, but the barista was very kind to me despite my appearance. Vibes in the cafe were pleasant but a very loud car crash outside disrupted my experience at one point. I enjoyed my time here and will likely return.

MaryBeth S.

Yelp
Went here with my niece while visiting the beautiful capital city of Montpelier. Comfortable seating outside and really good food service were very nice and it was a good visit overall. I recommend Capitol grounds for a great lunch place when you're visiting.

Suzy F.

Yelp
I love their baked goods Fantastic customer service , everyone is so nice and pleasant I highly recommend this place

Yelp
Stopped at Capitol Grounds on our way back to New York and had one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had, the Greta, made with pesto, egg and tomato on a perfectly baked croissant. The croissants were so good, we grabbed an extra for the road. Cold brew also really hit the spot. The staff there is incredibly welcoming, friendly, and helpful. I actually left my purse in the cafe only to realize it was missing once we were back in New York, and the owner, Julia, helped get it back to me.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in one late morning on a road trip through Montpelier. This coffee shop is very local and was packed for the hour. There is a lot of Bernie Sanders loved here - though it probably exists throughout the town. The iced coffee, which was $3, really did the trick and helped us continue on our trip. They definitely pride themselves on being liberal and being from Vermont, which was cool with me. I wish I had gotten the Bernie beans.

Joe M.

Yelp
I had a hot chocolate and the others had some delicious coffee. Very friendly and free internet.

Yelp
My kid and I LOVED this place! If I could give more stars, I would. We stopped here for a bite and some caffeine en route from Montreal to Boston. It was early and breakfast-time and we somehow pulled off the highway in Montpelier. This was the only spot open (it was early) and there was already quite a long line out the door. Obviously this is a popular place! The line moved quickly and we got to the counter promptly. The menu is written on a large chalkboard on the wall over the counter - and there's a ton of choices: lots of breakfast fare (mostly breakfast "sandwiches"), pastries (muffins, danish, bagels, croissants and cookies, etc.), and other sandwiches, and tons of hot and cold beverages, too. My kid and I ordered a bagel with cream cheese and lox and capers, and some chai lattes. We then grabbed the only available table and our order was brought to our table shortly. Everything was SO good! The bagel portion was huge; perfect for sharing. (Perhaps they were a tad too generous with the capers, but that's a subjective assessment...! Some folks might like all these capers. There were tons). And the coffees were wonderful. Prices were very decent, too. I like how there were ample outlets everywhere (my phone needed charging BAD). Also nice, how lots of the diners all knew each other and chatted, and some were old and some were young and it sounded like most diners knew the others and their families. A real neighborhood place. As other reviewers have noted, there are lots of Bernie signage here (all loving!), very liberal-oriented comments and quips on the menu and plaques on the walls (we loved that!), and bags of delicious coffee beans for sale (their coffee really is delicious) and super-cute Capitol Grounds t-shirts and sweatshirts (I really REALLY wanted to buy a shirt and I regret not doing so now. The shop merchandise is really nice). If I lived nearby, I'd be a regular here. No doubt.

Mandy J.

Yelp
Meh. Very average. We ordered breakfast sandwiches for curbside pick up. They were out of biscuits and substituted with English muffins. I wish they'd called us because we would have opted for bagels or croissants. The sandwiches themselves had very little flavor and were quite soggy by the time we got them home. The coffee was pretty good, which is what gives this place 2 stars. Lastly, it was pretty pricey. For two breakfast sandwiches, a drip coffee, and a mocha, it came to $22 before tip! Yikes. Update: Julia reached out to me regarding the sandwiches and offered a refund as a result of the aforementioned issues. This is amazing customer service! We all have off days and I'm so impressed by this that I'm upgrading review to 4 stars.

Yelp
For coffee, it was great. Fast service and there were plenty of indoor and outdoor seats on a late Sunday morning. They have plenty of flavors and probably all the fru-fru hipster drinks, but me, just a black coffee please. There's a pastry case that had some good looking items, but I didn't partake. You can't beat the place for a good cup of coffee.

Mike F.

Yelp
Passing through Montpelier this morning and tried this place for the first time. Breakfast sandwich was fantastic and I don't say that often. Would come here every day if I lived here.

Sarah A.

Yelp
This local coffee shop is tasty and has great company. I will say though, I think the baristas need a little more training. Specifically with making iced Americano. It's important that you fill the cup half way (or less) with cold water and then dump the hot espresso in. After that you can add a bunch of ice. [I was a barista for ten years and trained many people]. We've been coming here for years and order the same thing But we never know how the drink are going to turn out as of lately. I think the baristas are just dumping the espresso on the ice and then adding water? The problem is getting a luke warm "iced americano." The last thing that I will add is that one time my breakfast sandwich tasted like cigarettes. I guess someone didn't wash their hands after taking a break. we still love coming here but have been getting more disappointed as the weeks go on. Hope this helps!

Kristen B.

Yelp
My son and I are frequent fliers here! We love the food, staff, atmosphere and of course--coffee!! Now that we can eat inside, I'm sure we will enjoy many mornings before school and work together :). Iced vanilla latte is my go to, and my son loves their muffins!

Susie T.

Yelp
A hip and trendy location that serves great beverages! I ordered the caramel latte and it was the perfect drink for a chilly day! If you are not a coffee person, they also have smoothies and pastries on their menus! It is a good spot to stay and order a drink with friends or to do some work on your laptop! 802 Vermont merchandises are also available for purchase!

Robert A.

Yelp
Quaint cafe in this small town. The coffee was excellent and so was their twist on a BLT. I highly recommend.

Alan G.

Yelp
So... I go to Vermont for a reason many do... BEER! Our first trip to the holy land was about 6 years ago, when you used to have to wait outside a gas station in Stowe to get a four pack of Heady Topper and then chase the truck around town hoping to get a few more... but I digress. It was on this first trip to Vermont that a small stand was outside of a gas station handing out coffee samples. It was Capitol Grounds. I believe the gas station was in Waterbury and it was 7 AM and i was already on the hunt for beer. I did not like coffee. Coffee always tastes bitter, coffee always tastes blah to me and it gave me bad heartburn. Bob's Senate Blend did not have any of those characteristics. None of their coffee did. We make the trek to VT twice a year for beer , and always stop at Capitol Grounds.... we also order via their mail service Bob's Senate Blend to always have at home. It's literally the best coffee I've ever had. The restaurant itself is fine enough, it's a coffee shop... but oh man that coffee... (Bob's is the best, but if/when they have Bernie's blend... also a must have!)

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
Surprisingly very pretentious vibe here. Coffee wasn't anything special. They really pressured for tips here. They asked if you want to give a 25 percent tip and wouldn't show the iPad of the breakdown or the other options. I asked for milk for my drip and they sent me to the fridge to do it myself but they only kept half in half there. Don't know why they would tell me to do it myself if they actually keep milk behind the counter.

Hurds N.

Yelp
My favorite Montpelier coffee! Delicious light roast with citrus notes. Breakfast burritos are also tasty, made fresh with locally sourced vegetables and meats.

Hong L.

Yelp
Decent coffee in the heart of Montpelier. The drip is a bit too acidic but the coffee is hot and fresh, and works when I need my caffeine fix.

Shanda D.

Yelp
This is a trendy alternative to Espresso Bueno in Barre. This is a more upscale cafe next to the Legislature in downtown Montpelier. The cafe has Wi-Fi that works all the time ( you must buy something to be given the password to tap in), the bathrooms are always clean and plentiful, the staff are always busy serving the customers. Not the more bohemian vibe of Barre. This is a place where you could sit, talk, think, write, and not feel disturbed, but enhanced and energetic due to the hip and trendy environment. I liked the low lights and soft vibes of Parliment Funkadelic playing in the background. It took me back! I felt really cool sitting there in the moment of "just chillin'". And the coffee was good too... Premium dark roast which you could refill before you leave at the side coffee station, so its like 2 coffees as for the price of one. So that's definitely a really cool deal in downtown Montpelier! Yassss!

L H.

Yelp
Wide variety of food... muffins, cookies, soups, sandwiches, smoothies, and more. The service is on and off. It can be efficient or you can get stuck waiting 10+ minutes for something seemingly simple such as an Italian soda. The place is not the cleanest, although I have seen worse. My favorite thing to order here is a fresh squeezed lemonade. Lemons are squeezed fresh in front of you and you can pick to have a fizzy or non-fizzy version. The sweetening is done by you the customer using liquid sugar so that you can manage how sweet or not sweet your drink is. Especially on a hot summer day, this is the drink to get!

L M.

Yelp
I have been coming here over a week. Before today, I hadn't stayed all day by a long shot and plenty of regulars here stay for hours at a time, not buying more than two or three items, and aren't being told their trouble. Yet today, after reporting to a waitress that a guy was in there with a DOG (a bloody health hazard), I was suddenly told by said waitress that I was gumming up the flow of traffic* merely by sitting at a table like all the other customers who stay for hours at a time (I am not even usually the longest-staying customer). Again, I am not ever usually there the entire operating day like she was so quick, and incorrect, to complain about. Today was merely an exception to the rule due to the weather. I am homeless and so I can't just go home to get dry clothes. I have to wait to leave a given place until it stops raining or at least lessens a lot so I am not sleeping and traveling in wet clothes. She even had the audacity to complain that she could hear me when I was talking to someone. Um DUH, no shit, lady, IT IS A PUBLIC CAFE of course you are going to hear people!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention the prices are outrageous. I wouldn't pay these prices for totally organic and it's definitely not. Four bucks for a single donut, almost 13 bucks for a single, SMALL burrito without a single side, ten bucks for a SINGLE SLICE of avocado toast, etc. The only thing worth the price is the coffees and are even those worthwhile if the staff/service is so "entitled"?? * I could understand this broad complaining I was gumming up the works if I was walking around all the time, hitting up strangers for talk, etc. All I do is occasionally go out for a smoke LIKE I AM REQUIRED BY LAW TO DO. But all I am doing is sitting at a table overall. I don't see how this entitles this broad literally, yes, going out of her way to COME OUTSIDE while I was smoking, to complain to me about my behavior. I can't say uppity any better a term another reviewer used and I find it absolutely accurate.

Nicole G.

Yelp
This is a nice little coffee shop, looks like a good place to hangout, study, do work or just meet friends for coffee. I stopped in about 10 minutes before closing time and got a iced mocha and a raspberry white chocolate chip muffin. The coffee was pretty good, the muffin was okay. It was a bit dry but still tasted good. Service was decent, helpful when I asked for directions to the shop across the street that I blindly wandered past somehow. I will surely stop again when in town again!

Laura N.

Yelp
I adore finding little local spots like this. Is the coffee going to blow your mind? Probably not. But are you going to be served and surrounded by super kind locals? Unquestionably. It seems that Capitol Grounds has been doing their thing for quite some time now - what a lucky community to have a place like this as a pillar of main street.

John B.

Yelp
Took my family on a day trip to Vermont. We stopped in Montpelier to visit the Capital . While there we stopped at Capitol Grounds. I had a delicious ice coffee and my wife had a hot tea. My kids had a chocolate chip cookie. Everything was very tasty and the service was great.

Nicole G.

Yelp
Best coffee, I wake up wishing I could have another cup. I am from MA and happened to stop here. I will be ordering some coffee online! Thank god I can or i I swear I would have to make a trip back. I got regular coffee with almond flavor, superb.

Katelyn P.

Yelp
Great customer service! High quality and local food/drink, felt fresh and healthy. We got the house made iced Yerba matte, and house blend Italian soda. We also enjoyed 2 sandwiches. The mozzarella was DELICIOUS. Great environment and nice view of bad drivers on Main Street!!

Caroline B.

Yelp
Stopped here a few times while staying in the area. We ordered iced coffees and breakfast burritos. The coffee was great, and the burritos are such a great deal. I definitely recommend stopping by.

Maria I.

Yelp
Coffee was okay. The older man at the counter was HIGH AS ANYTHING. Not weed high, but shaking on hard drugs high. He could barely figure out my simple plain iced coffee order. His hands were dirty and he wasn't wearing gloves. They really promote their liberal views especially in the sizes of their coffee and posters hanging up. It's overpriced and the interior was dirty. After signing for my credit card they somehow got my EMAIL ADDRESS, asking for a review? Creepy as hell. I wouldn't go back

Oliver A.

Yelp
Here's the thing, the coffee is amazing here. Combined with the atmosphere you've got a very special place. However, the service can be bad or fine depending on the day and staff member. I think it may be that there used to working mostly with locals, people that come in every day and order the same thing. But honestly, it isn't a big deal. These guys are great. A must stop in Montpelier

Paul R.

Yelp
Do you want great dark coffee or light? Do you want great scrambled eggs on good local bread? Capitol Grounds is fabulous. A stop on every trip north.

Victoria H.

Yelp
While the apology is appreciated, it is insulting to be called a liar: in particular, the thermos had just been washed when brought in (which is how I found the blue piece in my sink). It was returned with crud all over it as if handled by someone with food / baking dough on their hands. Given it shows the product was made in China, that speaks for itself. Still, will never return to this place nor recommend it to anyone.

The T.

Yelp
Great grilled tuna and bacon sandwich! Will visit again for comfortable setting and good food.

Beth N.

Yelp
This is THE local spot to get coffee. Love it. The names of the sizes are perfect for the capital city.

Sara K.

Yelp
Eh, pass. From what my friends have told me, they sell good coffee and the desserts/breakfast items looked appetizing. I had a very bad experience with a tea I ordered though. I got an iced coffee also. The tea was horrible and didn't even steep. I could've made something better at my house. The coffee tasted good, but for the price of the coffee and the tea, it wasn't worth it. Came out to almost 7 dollars. I could make better drinks than what I received...

Kim W.

Yelp
Best coffee in New England. Roasted here in Vermont. Lots of organic options. The coffee shop is friendly and comfortable. Awesome food options for a small café. We love it here. So many options for a great pick me up for a chilly afternoon. Thank you for the your big smiles!!

Rebecca M.

Yelp
Stopped in on a trip from Milwaukee via Boston. Awesome coffee, friendly service, delicious muffins.
