"Beloved D.C. haunt Capitol Lounge, a go-to for locals, Hill staffers, and college sports fans alike, was one of D.C.’s saddest pandemic-caused closures. Now, the dearly missed dive will resurface at a fellow nonpartisan pub on Capitol Hill next month. The brick-lined bar poured its last beer in September 2020, wrapping up a 26-year run in the neighborhood (229 Pennsylvania Avenue SE). Now the House-side watering hole will pop up for one day only, taking over its Senate-facing friendly rival Union Pub on Saturday, April 1 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. (201 Massachusetts Avenue NE). Bar owners Matthew Weiss (Union Pub) and James Silk (Capitol Lounge) remain close friends, and five Capitol Lounge employees now work at the nearly 30-year-old Union Pub that’s situated a 10-minute walk north. Some of the same trinkets, nostalgic decor, posters, and menu items will all make a comeback for the newly announced takeover, dubbed “Capitol Lounge: The Return.” The worn-in and affordable bar, lovingly nicknamed “The Lounge” by regulars, was founded by prolific nightlife entrepreneur Joe Englert. Its motto was, “No Politics. No Miller Lite,” which means there will be no Miller Lite in sight on April 1. The Lounge was also known for weekday specials like half-off pizza on Mondays; 25-cent wings on Tuesdays; and $5 Bloody Marys and mimosas during weekend brunch. As the home of the Michigan State University Alumni Association of Greater Washington, March Madness and college football season were big money-making sporting events. The pop-up coincides with NCAA’s Final Four tournament, and specials will be revealed closer to the date. Former Capitol Lounge staff and diehard customers, some of whom now live as far away as California, have already made plans to attend the pop-up after receiving its Star Wars-themed video invitation. What initially began as an April Fools’ Day joke soon snowballed into the idea for a real resurrection. Capitol Lounge made a valiant effort to make ends meet when the pandemic started, immediately pivoting to takeout and delivery with gallons of house jungle juice and adding a newly covered patio area. The bar, which also functioned as a drop-off site for supplies during anti-racism protests in June 2020, applied for a Facebook small business grant to stay afloat but was reportedly denied." - Tierney Plumb

"Capitol Lounge, a long-standing dive bar known for its affordable prices and strong ties to local communities and events, is closing after 26 years. Despite efforts to adapt to pandemic conditions with takeout, delivery, and an outdoor patio, the bar couldn't survive. It was a popular spot for locals and college sports fans, offering weekday specials and hosting Michigan State University Alumni Association events. The bar also engaged in community support activities during the pandemic." - Tierney Plumb

Went for their Chicago style deep dish pizza and was pleasantly surprised. Sauce was delicious, with fresh toppings. Crust was flaky, and flavorful. It's not like back home, but this is as good as it gets around here. Better than Pi, and Armonds. We went during a slow snowy Saturday evening, so it was about a 35 min wait. It can take up to an hour if it's busy, so it pays to call ahead. Friendly service, reasonably priced on everything considering it's right in the District.

Kickin it old School at the Capitol lounge... this Nostalgic place offers both old and new school drinks, craft beer, and fare. You got to love all the political banners buttons pictures posters and decorations. Most interesting if you flash your government ID they'll give you half price off and cocktails with some cool names. Check out the list of $5 drinks, aka Shutdown cocktails. Their burger was great, see the picture with sweet potato fries.

The excellent table service was very prompt, friendly and professional. Good selection of draft beer, including a selection of craft brews. The pulled pork was tasty. I wouldn't order the pizza again. The pizza was served cold, and the toppings were bland. 5 star service and 2 star food. Overall: 3 stars.

We went because we were there and had heard good things...they were out of most everything we ordered...not happy after a 12-13 hour day power walking DC..we were hungry!!!! But what we did finally get was good...not at all happy about the $10 I spent for 2 small side Caesar salads either... ridiculous!!! But we were starved. Probably not going back...very dissapointed. So many other places to choose from.

Met my friends from out of town visiting for a conference. The beer shock top was noticeably warm. The wings were really good and the ambiance is relaxed with good volume. My waitress was rude and incompetent messing up orders, bills, talking over us in mid conversation. She even flipped her wrist and turned her back on us in response to a order correction that was her fault. What would we do with 60 wings? It’s still good wings tho and everyone was cool. 25 cent wing Tuesdays!

25 cent wings on Tuesday nights are pretty damn good. Otherwise it is a place trying really hard to not look and feel like what it is: somewhere for DC politicals and hill staffers to hang out and network over drinks. Not saying that's bad. I'm just pointing out that I've never been in a "dive" bar where 80% of the people are wearing dark suits.

Right in the heart of history. Great bar with amazing happy hour prices and fantastic food. I would highly recommend the smoked chicken wings with homemade Mac n cheese. Give it a try.
