Hungry after walking the LightScape exhibit at the Botanical Gardens, I pop into Cappy's for a late dinner. I haven't been to Cappy's in quite a while so I'm looking forward to the experience.
The interior is still basically the same, a rustic, comfy lodge type feel which is nice on a chilly night. After reviewing the menu, I start off with the Rose Manhattan cocktail and an order of the shrimp nachos. For the main course, I go with the salmon which comes with lobster mashed potatoes and asparagus on the side but I substitute the crispy brussels sprouts in place of the asparagus.
The Rose Manhattan comes out first and is simply refreshing. It tastes nothing like a classic Manhattan but in a good way. The mix of rye whiskey with compari, grand marnier, honey, orange, and bitters makes for a smooth drink that is not too sweet and just boozy enough. Me likey.
Next, the shrimp nachos come out and consists of six individual servings. Each serving comes on a crispy tortilla chip, topped with chopped onions, tomato, manchego cheese, and a jalepeno slice which is just out of the oven and held together by the melted cheese. It is delicious and makes for a tasty appetizer. I can only imagine what they would taste like with grilled / blackened shrimp....it would be insane but I digress.
My salmon main course comes out and it is plated beautifully. The fish it grilled a perfect medium rare and is moist and flaky. The lobster mashed potatoes are also excellent with small chunks of lobster mixed in...yummy. To add a punch of flavor I substituted the asparagus for the crispy brussels sprouts and glad I did. They are grilled in a balsamic glaze that adds a flavor profile the asparagus can't and adds that little zip to take it over the top.
On a roll now, I decide to go for broke and order dessert and a nightcap, so I go with the chocolate cake a la mode and an Old Fashioned Egg Nog.
The chocolate cake has a topping of pecans that I wasn't expecting but much appreciated as I love pecans. The cake was served warm with a side of vanilla ice cream. The cake is moist and fluffy while the chocolate icing was light and creamy. The ice cream was good and made for a nice companion.
The Old Fashioned Egg Nog is a more of an egg nog drink with bourbon added versus and Old Fashion with egg nog added if that makes sense. Either way, it was very tasty and not too sweet and paired well with the chocolate cake.
Overall, it has been way too long since I've been to Cappy's but rest assured that won't happen again. The food and service were both excellent and I'll be back soon, real soon.
