I have heard about Capriccio, but never tried it until now. I was dining as part of a large (14,) group for a surprise birthday. It was mostly couples and we were seated in the main dining room right up front along the window. The menu features dozens of dishes with everything you'd expect at an Italian restaurant; pastas, chicken, steak, veal, snd seafood specialties. There is a full bar in addition to the wine list. The decor is dim and classy and they had a gentleman singing that also walked around and visited all the tables. There appeared to be several other large parties dining there and the restaurant was quite busy for a weeknight.
Our waiter seemed to have been there for many years. He was really good at rattling off specials and telling us about menu items. We were also given water and delicious fresh bread with a marinara dipping sauce almost immediately upon being seated, even though not everyone was there yet. There was a little confusion with menus, (they were handed out, taken away, and then randomly given to a few diners a second time,) and with drink orders. (Some received the wrong drink, others were billed for a drink they didn't order, etc.)
As for food, I had the risotto di funghi, and it was delicious! It was also a really huge portion. My husband had the gnocchi and his was a really big serving too. He said it was light and fluffy, so he really liked it as well. One friend had the penne pasta with shrimp and another had the lobster ravioli. Both said their meals were great and many of us had a good sized portion to bring home for another meal. Sides salads were also good. I just had beer but a few members of our group who had mixed drinks or wine; said their drinks weren't good, and at least 2 in our party sent their drinks back. (The waiter was a little cranky when drinks were sent back.)
Everything was going pretty well, and everyone seemed to be enjoying their meal. Since it was a birthday one of our friends had brought a big cake for the birthday girl. (This is something we have done many times before at different restaurants around town.) When she asked for plates she was told that the staff could cut & serve it however it would be an additional $2.00 per person. She offered to serve it herself.....but still $2.00 person. A few members of our party have been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years, and the son of one guest bussed tables here as his first job. We were all in shock at the exorbitant charge. We could see a $5.00 or even $10.00 charge, but $2.00 was crazy! Especially since all of us had ordered full meals and lots of drinks from the bar!
The sad thing was we were all having a lovely meal; but the "cake fee" at the end kind of soured our experience. I might come back to Capriccio in the future......but I think we all learned our lesson about bringing in a cake from a 3rd party.
